Happy DECEMBURRRRRR!
And quite chilly this morning too.
Well, November ended with a BANG! And December started with a BANG!
Let me explain…
Yesterday, I was on Craigslist looking for a Christmas gift for Eric. And guess what I came across? A beautiful couch- for a crazy good price. I immediately emailed the seller and asked if we could take a look at it. I figured that it would be gone already because good deals sell so fast on Craigslist, especially in Toronto!
It was a dark brown sectional couch with a chaise (always wanted one!) and it was only a few months old and in mint condition. The owner was selling it because they were moving and it didn’t fit in their new condo (it is a BIG couch!).
Eric stopped by on his way home from work and…
We bought our very first couch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every couch we have had up to this point has been a hand me down which is absolutely awesome, but we have secretly been longing for a couch that fit our new family room. After looking at prices earlier this year, we knew we couldn’t afford one.
He was shocked that it wasn’t gone already. He had to drive all the way to his brother’s to pick up a van, then drive back and put 1 part of the couch in the van, then drop it off, and then drive all the way back to Toronto to pick up the rest!!! He didn’t get home until about 11:30 last night. Poor guy!!!! I was at home waiting anxiously for it to arrive. Luckily, S & B kept me company. ;)
We are absolutely in love with it:
It’s incredibly soft and comfy…
and will be great for entertaining!
…it is like brand new to us and our wallets are very happy. We figured that THREE lucky friends can crash on this couch at once! hahaha. ;) We are still university students at heart…
We will probably end up buying most of our furniture on Craigslist. You really can’t go wrong, 1) You save huge, and 2) You are recycling!! They have lots of cool antique pieces on Craigslist. Yes, there is a lot of crap to sift through, but it is so worth it. I also check out the FREE page a lot too! You’d be surprised how many people give away amazing things because they are in a rush.
The only thing we are not sure of is where to put our other brown couch. Right now it is here:
and it looks kind of odd…but we were thinking of keeping it around for our Christmas party.
We also tried here:
and it looked even more odd…
So we aren’t really sure what to do with it! Ideas????
I also want to find a coffee table off Craigslist as I don’t really like the one that is there now.
And why did Decemburrr start with a bang?
We have roofers here this morning and it sounds like an EARTHQUAKE in this house today! I swear they are going to fall through the roof on me. I woke up at 6am to BANG, BANG, BANG!!! I hit my alarm but it didn’t stop!

US Yoga Mat by Aurorae Giveaway!
To my US readers: I know that Canadian only Oral-B contest was tough to swallow yesterday! I really wish I could have opened it up to US residents too, but I was not able to. Well, today we have a US resident only contest because all is fair in love and war on OSG.
The wonderful people from Aurorae are willing to giveaway one new yoga mat to a lucky US reader!
I can’t review the mat myself as they do not ship to Canada, but I’d be curious to hear what you think of it should you win one.
You get to choose the COLOUR of your mat should you win!!!
How to enter:
- Leave a comment on this post telling me what you would do with our extra brown couch (hahah) AND what colour of mat you would choose.
Rules: Open to US residents only please. Contest closes Thursday Dec. 3rd at noon EST.
Goodluck!
Canucks: Don’t forget to enter the Oral-B Giveaway!

Ok, now that this home reno stuff is out of my system, I promise to get back to my health posts and hot topics!!!!

Love the violet color–and as for the couch I would keep it in the partial cube shape, you want people to be able to look at each other during large gatherings.
Thanks for the giveaway and great blog!

I would sell the couch (flyers on college campuses always work!) Or donate it to a homeless shelter or battered women’s shelter…the one here always needs furniture so your local shelter may need it too.
I love the ocean color!
We live in the city and have friends and family crashing at our place constantly (hey, it inspires me to keep the bathroom clean!). I would find a spot in another room for the couch. That way you can have friends crash in separate rooms so they don’t wake each other up!
I would pick that Seamist green color mat. That sage-y green is my absolute favorite color in the world — half my shirts are that color and I even have a pair of pants and a pair of shoes that color! haha!
I would leave your brown couch around for you Christmas Party as you want. Try to find a place or room where you think guests will be milling around and want a place to sit.
Afterwards, you could try to put it in another room. I like couches in offices if you need a break (if you have an office), or in bedrooms as a reading area.
If you find that you have no additional room, I would sell it on Craigslist just like the one you bought.
I would like the yoga mat in Ocean!! Thanks.
Love the sectional – I have a very similar one in green!
My idea:
– sell the old sofa on Craigslist
– take the money and put it towards a square ottoman (Decorest makes a lovely one that won’t break the bank) instead of a coffee table. Then go to Home Outfitters or The Bay and buy the huge square Gluckstein Home wooden cocktail tray for the top of your ottoman. Instant coffee table.
This is the set up we have and the ottoman ends up being an extra seat when needed OR a spot to put drinks and treats when needed.
Good luck.
That is an awesome couch!! I got mine on Craigslist too. You can get some amazing deals on there. And I have that exact same coffee table in black!
You could put your couch on freecycle and someone who needs it could come and pick it up. I would pick ocean.
Craigslist is awesome for finding great deals! I have found msot of my furniture (my first apt) there and with a little luck and some sifting around you can find great pieces and great deals!
I actually don’t think the back to back sofas looks that weird, but I guess maybe you know better since you’re seeing it in person.
Anyway, I would love the black yoga mat, so sign me up!
My Bulldog would definitely put the couch to good use! Lol!
The black yoga mat is beautiful!
Have you tried moving the couch at an angle in a corner? It doesn’t always work, but in a big enough room.
I love the solar!
I like where you have it right now. Then, after the Christmas party… you can put it on Craig’s List.
I’d start by asking all my friends and relations if they need a couch. Times are tough, and I don’t know anybody who’s buying new furniture! If nobody I know (or who knows somebody I know) wanted it, I’d probably put it on Craigslist or eBay.
I’d enjoy the seamist mat – it’s a lovely relaxing color!
With the extra couch, I would put it in another room (maybe in a den or a guest room) or give it to a family member or friend who could use it. For the yoga mat colo(u)r, I would pick Seamist!
I was recently telling a friend how I think u-shaped couches are heaven! I love your new one.
I’d probably put the old couch in a position parallel to the new one; someone sitting in the center of the new one would be facing a person in the center of the old one. Though that might look super awkward depending on how the room is set up!
I’d love a violet mat- purple hues are my favorite.
oooh the glory of a new sofa! how exciting!!! congrats :)
and i’d choose violet… its so pretty! like i’d be yogaing on a bed of violets.
My husband and I just bought our very first new couches a few weeks ago too!!! Such a great feeling. I’m willing to bet you could put that extra couch in another room…like a spare bedroom or something? Sometimes it doesnt seem like the most obvious place but we put a big arm chair in our bedroom because we had a little extra space and needed to get it out of the living room once the new stuff arived. It looks nice in the bedroom!
Love your new couch!! It looks beautiful:) I agree with the previous comments that you should sell it on craigslist. You could also donate it to an orphanage or shelter. If I won this contest, I am a us resident, I would pick the color violet. It’s my favourite color.
LOVE the new sectional! What a find. I have a friend who finds amazing IKEA stuff on CL.
I’d put your old couch right back on CL if you don’t need it!
I’d like the Seamist yoga mat because green is my favorite color and I could always use some soothing!
crap forgot mat color… violet!! If they had pink I’d get it, but violet is my second choice…or orange. Yeah it will be a game time decision!
What a great couch! :) I just love Craigslist!
If you’re going to keep the old couch until the x-mas party I would put it where you have it in the 2nd pic–it might not be exactly where you want it but for the party it’ll work out really well!
I like the infinity mat! :)
