The Battle Of The Nut Butters

January 25, 2010

Last night I awoke to a dentist drilling my teeth!!!!!!

In reality, I woke up to my husband drilling in the basement. He has been doing renos all weekend and apparently he thought it was a good idea to drill and hammer at 11:30pm at night!? Then once he came up to the room I couldn’t fall asleep until 12:30, so my goal of 5:45am wake-up was shot. I did manage to get up around 6:30 though so all was not lost. :)

You know what I discovered?

I love RAW Breakfast Cakes (see here for Baked Breakfast Cake)

Just like cake batter…

I had this mini Raw Breakfast Cake with my breakfast:

This morning’s breakfast featured a new Sherriff in town:

Can you believe this was my first time ever trying cashew butter?!?!?

Oh dear me.

IMG_9976

Cashew butter tastes like a DREAM. Rich, creamy, and subtly sweet.

It paired well with this delicious cranberry jam that Chelsea sent me!

Pure heaven…

What is your favourite and least favourite (nut) butter?

I have tried the following:

  • Peanut
  • Almond
  • Cashew
  • Pumpkin Seed
  • Barney Butter (yes, it deserves its’ own class!!!!!)
  • Apple butter (Not a nut butter but oh well!)

I don’t know what it was, but I strongly disliked the pumpkin seed butter!!! Totally not what I was expecting. My favourite hands down was CRACKbutter…otherwise known as…Barney Butter. Ohhhh Emmmm Geeeee, When Bree sent me a bunch of it, I finished them in lightening speed.

I am eager to try out new kinds of butters. What should my next one be?

I think it might be coconut butter. I have been dying to try it!

This morning and most of the afternoon is a shipping day for me. I have over 400 Glo Bars shipping out today. I do all my shipping labels myself (I have a corporate account with Canada Post) as it saves my customers 8% off shipping. I also need to squeeze in a workout and start baking orders once my shipping is done.

It has been raining the past two days! It is currently 6C/43F right now…such a weird winter we are having!

Have a wonderful Moan-day! ;)

Hi Angela,

Love reading your blog. I’ve recently been creating my own nut butters which are so easy to do! Any nut combo you like in a food processor and off you go! I just made some white chocolate peanut butter, honey roasted peanut butter and honey roasted mixed nut butter with white chocolate and unsweetened coconut. So much cheaper than buying and so fresh and you can control what you put in there. You can also control consistency from smooth to crunchy. So delicious!

Hi Angela, Glaser Organic Farms makes some yummy nut butters (their Macadamia butter is super creamy and yummy). They are in Florida and have awesome Raw and vegan products so maybe you can stop by on your road trip. I live in Cali, but I have ordered from them twice and LOVE their stuff! Trader Joes makes a to die for Raw Crunchy Almond Butter that is only $5 yeah!

I like Hemp Seed Butter too from Manitoba Harvest.

Have a great day!

Ive been wanting to try cashew butter. I imagine it would be pretty fantastic.

I wasnt a fan of the pumpkin seed butter either. Its sitting in my cupboard practically untouched. I was expecting SO much more.

Im in LOVE with almond butter, and now dark chocolate peanut butter. SO good!!

Batters and butters! Awesome! The breakfast cake looks awesome raw…I’m always a fan of “licking the bowl” so I just might have to try it out. :) Also …LOVE nuts butters of every kind…well, that I’ve tried. I have yet to try Cashew butter…but I’ll get on that.

I have tried almond butter–both the raw and roasted. Of the two I preferred the raw, as the roasted tasted rancid (even though it was far from the expiration date) and I had to take it back. Because everyone raves about AB so much, I finally cracked down and bought a like $10 jar of the raw almond butter, hoping I would like that. It is ok, but not that great. I’ll honestly have to work to finish it.

All in all, I prefer my $2 jar of natural peanut butter, which is much better for my wallet. I originally attempted to switch to AB because I read that peanuts contained alfatoxins–or something like that–but then I heard that a lot of produce does too and it’s not a big deal.

I’m still not sure what to believe, and I would eventually like to transition to a raw butter, as I’m trying to eat more raw foods, but for now I’m enjoying my peanut butter. It IS really important to me that it is natural–and preferably organic–though. I like the only ingredient to be peanuts–not even any salt. It is like a completely different spread than it’s Skippy or Peter Pan imitators. Those taste so fake and sweet–even the consistency is unnerving. Oh, and I’ve tried Naturally More Peanut Spread and was not a fan. It feels like chalk when you stir it and gets hard and dried on when you try to heat it or bake with it. It was good in homemade peanut butter cups, though.

I’m wondering if the brand of almond butter I tried was bad. It’s Maranatha. Has anyone had good luck with them? Perhaps TJ’s AB or Barney Butter will be different? I did make homemade AB once (just almonds and almond milk blended into a butter) and that was pretty good (I loved it spread on fresh peaches or nectarines!)

Oh, and I love apple butter. I would like to make my own one of these days.

As for butters I would like to try: Pumpkin butter, pumpkin SEED butter, walnut butter, sunflower seed butter, cashew butter (the cashew butter pictured here looks really dark; the one’s I’ve seen are white), macadamia butter, coconut butter, cacao butter…the list goes on.

Wow, this comment is practically a post in itself. Sorry about that. I guess I just have a lot of thoughts on nut butters?!

I very much dislike Maranatha almond butter (and some of their other nut butters). Give some others a try. . . I’ve liked Justin’s maple almond butter (a treat for me, since I normally never spend that much), and also some generic AB brands, such as Trader Joe’s.

Maple Almond…that sounds heavenly! I will have to give that a try sometime. Thanks for the suggestions! :)

You just might like this. Mix 1/4 cup of peanut butter with 1/4 cup pumpkin butter (or just plain, canned pumpkin — which I often have on hand). I happen to really like this as a dip for bananas or on a slice of bread for a quick snack.

We are having similar weird weather. It’s been pouring all day.

My favorite nut butter is raw crunchy almond butter. For some reason the roasted and salted is weird to me.

Ohhh, you made the breakfast cakes raw!!! Do you just follow the recipe and not bake it? (Of course, I would use oat groats instead of rolled oats). :)

I recently made my own walnut butter (just put walnuts in the food processor and process until smooth). It’s quite good; because it’s such a high-fat nut, it works VERY well as a butter!

I need to look into this raw breakfast cake-um YOM.

I’m so glad you liked the cranberry jelly :) I’ve never had cashew butter but now I want to try.

I too, had an obsession with Barney butter-it was all I ate for awhile there. I’m on a peanut butter kick right now.

I think my least favorite is soy nut butter and my most favorite is a tie between almond and peanut-though pecan butter (when I try it) may top the list.

I still love the good ol Almond Butter best. Cashew is nice though because it gets so darned smooth and creamy! I have Coconut Butter in my cupboard! (People will try and tell you – that coconut butter is the oil in solid form – they lie! It’s not the truth)

Artisana is the only coconut butter I’ve seen, and my local organic grocery as well as Whole Foods just started carrying it in Canada. (Just recently) It’s not as ‘buttery’ as you’d think – but still FABU! Dried coconut and the oil blended to a paste? Hell yeah sign me up. :P I eat it straight out of the jar, or sweetened with agave on toast. It can be a bit dry but I’d like to try making a frosting with that and a bit of agave. ‘whip’ it up or something.

Artisana also makes “Cacao Bliss” which is coconut butter with cacao powder and agave. Now THAT is what dreams are made of!

Let me know if you can’t find it Angela – and I”ll mail it from VanCity Gladly!

Those toast pics were drool-worthy! I haven’t tried much beyond pb, but I am not really an almond butter fan. Sunbutter might be my favorite food on the planet though!

I love the idea of cranberry jam (recipe?) and cashew butter. Another one to try is walnut butter. I actually make it myself (saves a few bucks when you get nuts on sale). I just toast 1 pound of walnuts in 1 350 oven for 5 – 8 minutes. Cool. Then I put them in a food processor. Let the processor run for quite a while, 2 – 4 minutes. It will slowly grind up into ‘butter’. I add kosher salt mid way through the processing. Store in frig. Absolutely delish!
