Operation OATMEAL: Get In Ma Belly!

December 9, 2009

Today was the first snowfall of the season!

IMG_7615

It was the perfect day to embrace my inner Project Snow Strength and get shoveling! The snow today was soooo wet and difficult to lift. My abs got in a killer workout which is perfect because Whittle My Middle ends tomorrow!

Here I am in my duds:

IMG_7837

I am so cool it hurts!

A sure sign you need new boots? You go to lace up your boots and the shoe lace falls off in your hand. hahaha. I’ve had these since I was 15 yrs old!!! I’m pretty sure they are going to poof into thin air one day.

IMG_7625

Here are some great tips for shoveling snow without hurting yourself.

The snow day was also perfect for a Glo Bar shipping day…

IMG_7622

With Eric’s help (he took the day off), we hit a new shipping record for one day- 80 orders went out!!!!! We went craaazy all day, but it flew by. I feel so good. My stack of orders is now much more manageable.

It was also the perfect day for…

OATMEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can believe it, I have only made homemade oatmeal twice in my life and it made me feel sick after eating it! In university I lived off instant oatmeal. I know, I know, it’s not real oatmeal, but I didn’t even know where to start with a homemade bowl. I LOVE oats so I always knew I needed to give it another shot!

I used Kath’s classic oatmeal recipe using Bob’s Red Mill organic oats. Oh Bob, you make amazing oats. Glo Bakery is switching over to Bob’s oats- I am super pumped as I am a HUGE fan of Bob’s Red Mill products!!!!!

IMG_7589

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup organic oats
  • 1/3 cup Almond Milk
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 very, very brown banana (ooey and gooey and ewww)
  • 1/2 t organic vanilla

Directions: Throw in above ingredients into pot and simmer on medium, stirring very fast until desired consistency is achieved after about 10 mins. or so. (Note: Kath’s directions are more detailed, but I was in a huge rush today and just dumped it all in!)

My toppings included:

  • 1 Tbsp gogi berries
  • drizzle organic raw blue agave (soooo good)
  • Organic chia seeds
  • unsweetened coconut
  • Organic crunchy peanut butter
IMG_7607

The toppings were out of this world delightful!!!! I loved the raw agave drizzled over top.

IMG_7606

The only thing I was surprised with was how SMALL of a portion it made!!! It was tiny! Any suggestions? What amounts do you guys use when you make oatmeal? 1/2 cup oats vs. 1/3 cup? More liquid???

IMG_7592

Even though it was tiny, it still kept me full for about 2 hours which was more than I expected it to.

I might try adding some hemp powder to my next batch for protein.

IMG_7605

With Christmas tea.

What did I think of the oatmeal this time around?
I can’t wait to make my next batch already! I now think I am crazy for waiting this long to try it again. I think the problem with my first batch was that I made it too thick and too large of a portion. Consider me a homemade oatmeal fan for life!

When will I eat it?

I see myself eating oatmeal for lunch more so than breakfast! I know I can’t give up my morning Green Monster, but I can totally see myself making kick butt oats for lunch. Mmmm.

What does your PERFECT bowl of oatmeal look like?

Please share!

Does anyone have any savoury oats that would be great for lunch (and vegan)?

~~~~
OSGMOM arrives tomorrow. I am sooooo excited to see my mom! Wish the whole family was coming…
Peace out homies!
To plump up the oat portion, add more water and cook slower! It might be less chewy than today’s oats but it will add volume. Usually I use 3 or 4 times more liquid than oats. So many fun things you can add to oats.. never a boring bowl!
I use 1/2 c. water + 1/2 c. almond milk for 1/2 c. dry oats. It ends up being REALLY voluminous, and when I add pumpkin it is even more!! LOVE oatmeal :)
I usually do 1/2 cup serving with a whole banana whipped in. I’ll only use 1/3 cup if I’m going crazy with lots of toppings – examples a la Kath – crumbled muffins, granola bars, etc.
I had to teach myself to like oatmeal about 20 years ago but now I love it! I really love Oat Bran (even though I thought the texture would be sludgey, it’s not) and Steel Cut. Thank you for supporting Bob’s – they are a family-run business I believe!
I only eat oatmeal on the weekends because I don’t have time during the workweek – just a quick smoothie in one hand while I do other things, like brush my hair, with the other hand. I should learn overnight oats but haven’t yet. Welcome to the wonderful world of oats!
I usually do 1/2 c. of oats and 3/4 c. vanilla soy milk. It keeps the oats a little more “oat-like”
This week I’ve been making PBB&J oatmeal. I make the oats and then I toss them in a bowl with a mashed up banana, a 1T. of peanut butter, and 1T. of fruit spread. It’s pretty delish!
1/3 c. never kept me full. I always used 1/2 c.
My favorite oatmeal is oatmeal, almond milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, cottage cheese, pumpkin puree, unsweetened coconut, pecans, and a spoonful of PB melted on top!
I cook 1/3 cup of oats in 1 cup of water. Then I mix in a scoop of almond butter, a bit of maple syrup, 1/2 a banana (sliced), either ground flax or chia and a dash of cinnamon. So tasty! Sometimes I add goji berries and sub the maple syrup with unpasteurized honey.
Nothing is better than a bowl of oats on a cold day! It was only eight degrees here when I woke up but no snow yet!
Angela, isn’t the snowfall so peaceful and tranquil? It snowed for the first time this year here in CT, too! Your oatmeal looks so soothing and creamy–it seems like just the dish for the weather! And yes, Bob’s Red Mill is the best!!
Our first big snowfall as well here in the Chicago area. I also shoveled and burned almost 400 calories in about 50 min. That stuff was heavy!
Glad you enjoyed your oats. I love homemade and make it a variety of ways. But I love peanut butter on top. Never tired agave on it so I will do that sometime.
Have fun with mom! We were able to visit with my family for Thanksgiving and it was so great to see them because it had been way too long.
I use 1/2 cup oats and 3 cups of water .. it makes it seem like a huge bowl oats and they are extra creamy and delish! its takes alittle while longer to cook but sooo worth it! almond butter is great on top with sliced bananas and also frozen blueberries with yogurt and almonds is good ( the cold berries with the hot oatmeal is great)!
