Operation OATMEAL: Get In Ma Belly!

December 9, 2009

Today was the first snowfall of the season!

IMG_7615

It was the perfect day to embrace my inner Project Snow Strength and get shoveling! The snow today was soooo wet and difficult to lift. My abs got in a killer workout which is perfect because Whittle My Middle ends tomorrow!

Here I am in my duds:

IMG_7837

I am so cool it hurts!

A sure sign you need new boots? You go to lace up your boots and the shoe lace falls off in your hand. hahaha. I’ve had these since I was 15 yrs old!!! I’m pretty sure they are going to poof into thin air one day.

IMG_7625

Here are some great tips for shoveling snow without hurting yourself.

The snow day was also perfect for a Glo Bar shipping day…

IMG_7622

With Eric’s help (he took the day off), we hit a new shipping record for one day- 80 orders went out!!!!! We went craaazy all day, but it flew by. I feel so good. My stack of orders is now much more manageable.

It was also the perfect day for…

IMG_7602

OATMEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can believe it, I have only made homemade oatmeal twice in my life and it made me feel sick after eating it! In university I lived off instant oatmeal. I know, I know, it’s not real oatmeal, but I didn’t even know where to start with a homemade bowl. I LOVE oats so I always knew I needed to give it another shot!

I used Kath’s classic oatmeal recipe using Bob’s Red Mill organic oats. Oh Bob, you make amazing oats. Glo Bakery is switching over to Bob’s oats- I am super pumped as I am a HUGE fan of Bob’s Red Mill products!!!!!

IMG_7589

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup organic oats
  • 1/3 cup Almond Milk
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 very, very brown banana (ooey and gooey and ewww)
  • 1/2 t organic vanilla

Directions: Throw in above ingredients into pot and simmer on medium, stirring very fast until desired consistency is achieved after about 10 mins. or so. (Note: Kath’s directions are more detailed, but I was in a huge rush today and just dumped it all in!)

My toppings included:

  • 1 Tbsp gogi berries
  • drizzle organic raw blue agave (soooo good)
  • Organic chia seeds
  • unsweetened coconut
  • Organic crunchy peanut butter
IMG_7607

The toppings were out of this world delightful!!!! I loved the raw agave drizzled over top.

IMG_7606

The only thing I was surprised with was how SMALL of a portion it made!!! It was tiny! Any suggestions? What amounts do you guys use when you make oatmeal? 1/2 cup oats vs. 1/3 cup? More liquid???

IMG_7592

Even though it was tiny, it still kept me full for about 2 hours which was more than I expected it to.

I might try adding some hemp powder to my next batch for protein.

IMG_7605

With Christmas tea.

What did I think of the oatmeal this time around?
I can’t wait to make my next batch already! I now think I am crazy for waiting this long to try it again. I think the problem with my first batch was that I made it too thick and too large of a portion. Consider me a homemade oatmeal fan for life!

When will I eat it?

I see myself eating oatmeal for lunch more so than breakfast! I know I can’t give up my morning Green Monster, but I can totally see myself making kick butt oats for lunch. Mmmm.

What does your PERFECT bowl of oatmeal look like?

Please share!

Does anyone have any savoury oats that would be great for lunch (and vegan)?

~~~~
OSGMOM arrives tomorrow. I am sooooo excited to see my mom! Wish the whole family was coming…
Peace out homies!
I use double to triple the liquid as oats and use about 60g banana, I only use 1/4 cup of oats and it always comes out a lot. I also always add 1/2 a serving of unsweetened brown rice protein and it works perfectly, can’t taste it and I think it bulks it up and makes it filling. My favorite combo right now is the melted banana and then dark hershey’s cocoa and peppermint extract, holiday style
When I make it I use a 1/2 cup of oats. I also use a banana and about 1/2 cup of pure pumpkin. It reallllllyyyy bulks it up without adding tons of calories. Add in a little pumpkin pie spice, (and some extra cinnamon,I cant get enough of the stuff) and you one awesome bowl of oats!
This is really random, but I think around Thanksgiving you were wishing that you could find a vegan marshmallow. Katie posted s’mores fudge babies with a product called Ricemellow. (Here’s the link: http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2009/12/09/smores-fudge-babies/) It’s a creme, but maybe it would work for your marshmallow needs? My brain just connected the two and I thought I’d pass it along!
I always make 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup almond milk, .5 ormaybe 1 cup water (depends on other mix-ins), and 1/2 banana, I’ve taken to adding tons of fruit to make it even more filling. Some examples: canned pumpkin, softened apple pieces, pear, fresh cranberries, etc. YUM.
i have oatmeal pretty much every day at work – my standard go-to is 1/2 cup oats, 1 cup water, 1 tbsp. ground flax [something 1/2 tbsp chia seeds], 1 banana sliced [added with about 1 min. left in the microwave], a big scoop of naturally more peanut butter, and some cinnamon on top. so good and so filling. last week i had pomegranate arils with it as well, and they made it even better.
A big bowl of oatmeal is breakfast every morning! You only ate 1/3 cup of rolled oats?! You silly girl, the serving size is 1/2 cup. I think Kath uses less to leave calorie room for all her yummy toppings (granola, nuts, etc). Sometimes I even use 1/4 cup of steel-cut oats instead for a slightly smaller serving, a little more texture, and the same scrumptious satiety. Enjoy the snow :)
I usually use 1 part oats to 2 parts liquid. Banana is absolutely key, and I also loooove adding canned pumpkin for more bulk. It’s great topped with maple syrup, nut butters, and anything CRUNCHY!!
So funny that you ask about savory oats, since I just posted about mine here: http://makingfoodandotherstuff.wordpress.com/2009/12/08/more-snow-and-food/
I usually use 1/3 cup oats, but I put in a TON of veggies. My most basic and favorite savory combo is salsa, spinach, and any winter squash. Adding in nutritional yeast gives it a nice cheesy flavor too. This would be great for lunch (though I eat it for breakfast!).
Congrats on such a successful bakery! It must feel so good to be doing exactly what you want to be doing.
My perfect recipe for oatmeal is 1 cup water with 2/3 cup rolled oats – nice & thick!
Do you still make the RUN GLOW BARS???
I agree with you…when I made the portion size that Kath Eats recommended I was still hungry. I do 1/2 c. oats and 1 cup water (no milk) and banana. I always forget the vanilla. I top it with almond butter and chopped dates. best. breakfast. ever.
For my favorite oatmeal I use a ratio of 1-part oatmeal to 3-parts liquid. I love using oat bran instead of rolled oats, too! It’s more of a cream-of-wheat texture.
I season mine with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a dash of sea salt, then top it off with a bit of almond butter and pure maple syrup! It’s my favorite– although, I agree, I think I prefer it for lunch, so I can have my morning green drink for breakfast!! :)
1/2 cup oats + 1/2 cup almond milk (vanilla, usually) + 1/2 cup water + 1 tbs PB or AB (added at the end of cooking!). Top it with berries and whatever else I feel like…and a sprinkle of brown sugar!
I’ve never added the banana… hmm.
I adore oatmeal!
I usually put 20grams of oats,but just because I want to save calories, and I’m usually hungry after that. I love all combinations. With banana and pb, cherry cocoa oatmeal, green oats (you should try that, just add spinach when the oatmeal is cooked and blend), apple oats..yummy
I always use Kath’s recipe for oatmeal. The mashed banana makes it sweet and it just tastes so good! I don’t know how much I use, i have this little cup I use to measure equal amounts of oats, milk and water, I think it is about 1/2 cup. Most of the time I use half a banana, but if I use an entire one it turns out thicker. When it gets too thick I just add a little milk. I top my oatmeal with cinnamon and raisins.
I am curious for savory oatmeal recipes, haven’t tried that yet!
Here is one of my fav’s:
I would have mixed in half a mashed up banana to the oatmeal though if I had to do it over again. It was really good!
I love my Reese’s oatmeal in the morning. Do it in the microwave, have to admit. One of the few things I do in there. 1/2 cup oatmeal & water (I like my oatmeal thick). Microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. Stir. top with 1 tsp chocolate chips & 2 tbsp peanut butter. Mix all together. It’ll keep you full for hours!
My boyfriend and I use this recipe:
1 cup oatmeal
1 cup water
1 cup vanilla hemp milk (Pacific) – it smells SO GOOD while it’s cooking!
1 banana
We’re BIG eaters….
I add PB and carob chips
For me, it’s 1/2 cup oatmeal and 3/4 to 1 cup of hot water. I just let it sit until it absorbs the water rather than actually cooking it (learned this from HEAB). It works just fine with old-fashioned oats. My favorite way to eat them? Straight out of the PB jar ala HEAB, maybe with 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder, although I’m going to be honest, they’re also pretty good with BBQ sauce (if you’re feeling savory). Today, I’m trying smores oats…have a couple of marshmallows (could use vegan ones or vegan MM creme…I had some regular left over that I need to use up) and a few chocolate chips. We’ll see if it’s good or not!
The first snowfall, how pretty! (and how wet, and how old it will get soon, right? Sorry, waxing rhapsodic over snow because I miss it so…)
I’ve been rockin’ my oatmeal lately with cranberries, but I love any fruit in them. My absolute favorite combination is oatmeal with pineapple chunks and coconut, cooked with half water and half pineapple juice–like a pina colada, no rum needed. Funnily enough, I tried super-pimped oats (peanut butter with my usual banana) yesterday, and I couldn’t get them down me. I may be the only person in this world that can’t stand peanut butter in oatmeal!
