Operation OATMEAL: Get In Ma Belly!

December 9, 2009

Today was the first snowfall of the season!

IMG_7615

It was the perfect day to embrace my inner Project Snow Strength and get shoveling! The snow today was soooo wet and difficult to lift. My abs got in a killer workout which is perfect because Whittle My Middle ends tomorrow!

Here I am in my duds:

IMG_7837

I am so cool it hurts!

A sure sign you need new boots? You go to lace up your boots and the shoe lace falls off in your hand. hahaha. I’ve had these since I was 15 yrs old!!! I’m pretty sure they are going to poof into thin air one day.

IMG_7625

Here are some great tips for shoveling snow without hurting yourself.

The snow day was also perfect for a Glo Bar shipping day…

IMG_7622

With Eric’s help (he took the day off), we hit a new shipping record for one day- 80 orders went out!!!!! We went craaazy all day, but it flew by. I feel so good. My stack of orders is now much more manageable.

It was also the perfect day for…

IMG_7602

OATMEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can believe it, I have only made homemade oatmeal twice in my life and it made me feel sick after eating it! In university I lived off instant oatmeal. I know, I know, it’s not real oatmeal, but I didn’t even know where to start with a homemade bowl. I LOVE oats so I always knew I needed to give it another shot!

I used Kath’s classic oatmeal recipe using Bob’s Red Mill organic oats. Oh Bob, you make amazing oats. Glo Bakery is switching over to Bob’s oats- I am super pumped as I am a HUGE fan of Bob’s Red Mill products!!!!!

IMG_7589

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup organic oats
  • 1/3 cup Almond Milk
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 very, very brown banana (ooey and gooey and ewww)
  • 1/2 t organic vanilla

Directions: Throw in above ingredients into pot and simmer on medium, stirring very fast until desired consistency is achieved after about 10 mins. or so. (Note: Kath’s directions are more detailed, but I was in a huge rush today and just dumped it all in!)

My toppings included:

  • 1 Tbsp gogi berries
  • drizzle organic raw blue agave (soooo good)
  • Organic chia seeds
  • unsweetened coconut
  • Organic crunchy peanut butter
IMG_7607

The toppings were out of this world delightful!!!! I loved the raw agave drizzled over top.

IMG_7606

The only thing I was surprised with was how SMALL of a portion it made!!! It was tiny! Any suggestions? What amounts do you guys use when you make oatmeal? 1/2 cup oats vs. 1/3 cup? More liquid???

IMG_7592

Even though it was tiny, it still kept me full for about 2 hours which was more than I expected it to.

I might try adding some hemp powder to my next batch for protein.

IMG_7605

With Christmas tea.

What did I think of the oatmeal this time around?
I can’t wait to make my next batch already! I now think I am crazy for waiting this long to try it again. I think the problem with my first batch was that I made it too thick and too large of a portion. Consider me a homemade oatmeal fan for life!

When will I eat it?

I see myself eating oatmeal for lunch more so than breakfast! I know I can’t give up my morning Green Monster, but I can totally see myself making kick butt oats for lunch. Mmmm.

What does your PERFECT bowl of oatmeal look like?

Please share!

Does anyone have any savoury oats that would be great for lunch (and vegan)?

~~~~
OSGMOM arrives tomorrow. I am sooooo excited to see my mom! Wish the whole family was coming…
Peace out homies!
I have been on an oatmeal kick for the past few months. Instead of adding any type of sweeter (like maple syrup or brown sugar), I add in a big dollop of yogurt – like strawberry banana. I also always add in dried cranberries and some homemade granola before I cook it.
I was so happy when I woke up to snow this morning…I thought Southern Ontario was never going to get any snow! Hopefully it sticks around for Christmas.
Love, love, love my oats in the morning. I look forward to getting up everyday! Lately I’ve been using 1/2c. oats, 1/2c. milk, 1/2c, water, 1/2 very ripe banana, toppings include toasted pecans, apple butter, dried cranberries and a sprinkle of granola. I also love adding some canned pumpkin in at the end of cooking. Yum! Makes me want oats for dinner now.
Mmm, I love oats! I make oatmeal “pancakes” with 1/2 cup oats ground into a flour, 1 Tbs. of ground flax, 1 Tbs. vanilla brown rice protein powder, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, pinch of nutmeg and ginger. Add water to make it a batter consistency and then cook it in a pan with coconut oil. Once done, I spread on cashew/peanut/almond butter, and enjoy! It’s sooo good!
I hated how it had to rain and ruin all our lovely snow though!
Congrats on getting 80 orders out- you are a baking machine! ;)
I do bananas in my oats whipping them in just like Kath! Bob’s Red Mill are my favorite oats. I wasn’t a huge fan of oats either (I liked the instant Quaker flavored crap), but I can now eat Bob’s. They are so good!!
Love me some oatmeal. It is my morning staple. I don’t think I could down a cold green monster in the morning! I ususally use about 1/2 a cup and add lots of water (1 cup) then I microwave it with a pinch of salt, cinnamon, sweetener and 1/2 of a ‘naner. I nuke it for about 3 minutes, stir stir stir, add some more water, and microwave for another couple of minutes. I add lots of liquid, enough so it’s volumous but not runny! It’s an art Ang :-p
Yay! Delighted you like oatmeal! :) You might like to try steel cut oats sometime, they take longer to cook & might need to be soaked but they’re super yummy and are the whole oat grain.
I have the rolled oats every morning and the steel cut oats sometimes on weekends!
I agree with Katie about using a lot of water to give more volume!
My favorite oatmeal is oat bran. I call it the Banana Bread Oat Bran. It smells and tastes a lot like a really good banana bread. :) You can find my recipe here: http://tritolose.wordpress.com/2009/12/01/im-back/
my favorite oats are so boring — just oats (or oat bran), pb, and banana, made with water! but i love.
savory vegan oats . . . how about MediterraneOuts? oatmeal, chick peas, olives, roasted red pepper, and sundried tomato! i’d add feta too (but obvs not vegan :) )
I love pumpkin oats for volume!
1/3 cup oats
1/3 cup each rice milk and water
tablespoon of ground flax
TONS of cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice
–towards the end add in:
1/3-1/2 cup pumpkin
spoonful of almond butter
–top with pumpkin seeds, drizzle of maple syrup and more cinnamon
with the volume, healthy fats, whole grains and protein in this bowl it lasts forever (and tastes like dessert!)
The way I make my oatmeal is similar to you… sort of.
I always make some for me AND my fiance. I use 1 cup of oatmeal, 2 cups of vanilla soymilk, 1 banana. And my fav mix ins are chopped dates, walnuts, and topped with shredded coconut. I split it so that he gets a bit more than I do so I would say I eat anywhere b/w 1/3-1/2 a cup at a given time and it leaves me stuffed to the brim.
Hi Angela! I like to put more liquid in mine. I do 1/2 cup oats and over 1 cup of milk/water. It definitely plumps it up. Also, adding pumpkin helps for volume like others mentioned. It looks like it was a great bowl though!
I do 1/2 cup dry rolled oats and 1 1/4 cups water. You have to cook them longer with the extra water, but they fluff up more and I love ’em mushy ;) If you want volume – go for oat bran! It’s smaller cut, creamier and puffs up to make a huge bowl. As for my favourite way to eat it – any way so long as it has nut butter on top ;)
It depends on my hunger. If I’m really hungry, I do 1/2 cup, but sometimes 1/3 cup is enough if I have enough fixings.
I almost always whip in a banana (one that is browning), some agave, and most importantly, a little bit of half & half. The half & half makes the oatmeal so deliciously creamy. And always a spoonful of nut butter. :)
A couple of things:
My jaw hit the floor when I saw all your orders. Congratulations Angela, your bakery is certainly a HUGE success. :)
I shovelled our double car driveway all myself tonight. Holy workout batman. I skipped spinning to ensure that I made it home to let the dog out, but needles to say I don’t even feel guilty for missing my workout.
As soon as it gets chilly the oats come out to play! I add oat bran into mine most times (about 1/3 C of each) to give some changeup in the texture. I made ‘french toast oats’ the other day with vanilla extract, cinnamon, almond milk, ripe banana and real maple syrup!
Savory oats…so many options- oat bran with tahini and roasted squash stirred in (delicata, kabocha, buttercup, butternut any kind :) ) is good. Other things: avocado, hummus, roasted eggplant. MMMMMMM
