For whatever reason, Mother Nature has given Southern Ontario (and places nearby) a very wet Spring! Are you in one of those rainy areas too?
My umbrella gets lots of use lately. ;)
We’ve had steady rain for the past 5 days and there is more rain due for 3 out of 5 days in the week ahead.
Despite this weather, the rain doesn’t really bother me as much lately, which is pretty strange because I tend to always feel a dip in my mood when it rains.
Today, I realized that I have yoga to thank for my improved mood!
I started going to Moksha’s hot yoga classes on May 7th and I fell in love with it (read all about my first class here). I’ve been to about 11 classes now and I just can’t get enough. I’m really getting my money’s worth with my unlimited $40 intro monthly pass! I really wish I had tried this ages ago. I also think it would have helped me beat my Winter blues too.
“Moksha Hot Yoga was founded in Toronto, Canada in 2004 by yoga teachers Ted Grant and Jessica Robertson. Though a relative newcomer, Moksha has quickly gained popularity as over 30 affiliated studios have since opened worldwide, including in Canada, the United States, Switzerland, and the Caribbean. The Moksha method is a set series of about 40 poses done in a hot room. Moksha has strict "green" standards for keeping their studios environmentally friendly, including using sustainable building materials and natural cleansers. They are also committed to offering weekly low-cost classes with the money donated to locate charities and karma yoga opportunities to keep yoga classes more accessible.” [source]
From time to time, I wonder where the inflexible girl who hated yoga DVDs disappeared to. Well, I’m still here, but now I’ve found a style of yoga that clicks with me. And I’m so grateful that I have because I always felt like there was a missing piece to my fitness puzzle.
Like with most things, I don’t think hot yoga is for everyone (in fact, if you have health problems, such as a heart condition, it’s advised you do not take part), but I’m more convinced that there is a style of yoga that almost anyone can enjoy. You just have to find the right style that meshes with your personality and do what works for you.
The word Moksha means ‘Freedom’, which is exactly how I’ve been feeling lately. Freedom from anxiety, busy thoughts, tight muscles, and day-to-day ‘noise’.
Moksha Characteristics:
- Poses are traditional asanas (I heard there are about 40 yoga positions used)
- You are encouraged to set an intention (in your mind) at start of class
- Emphasis is on deep breathing, enhancing flexibility, and balance
- Breath-synchronized movements – the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale.
- Several classes are offered: Moksha, Moksha Flow, Flow, and LYM.
- Classes range from 60-90 minutes (75 min is my sweet spot!)
- The pace is quick and heart rate is elevated throughout class
- Room is heated to 37 Celsius
- Instructors will often do gentle adjustments, if its ok with you (personally I appreciate occasional adjustments because they help me find proper form)
- Instructors have the flexibility to slightly adapt each class, so no class is the same
- Friendly to beginners (trust me on this one!)
- Savasana (lying flat on the mat and focusing on breath) occurs at the start of class, middle class, and at the very end.
- There are a couple minutes of intense ab work during the floor series.
- It is a great workout if you want it to be and you push yourself. My muscles are often sore after classes!
After just 11 classes, I’ve noticed an improvement in my focus, muscle tone, breathing, flexibility, posture, and balance. I feel strong, aware, peaceful, and happier than I have in a long time. Eric tells me that my skin feels incredibly soft, which is an added bonus from all that salty sweat exfoliating the skin. I also love the class atmosphere…the energy from the room is really contagious and a yoga DVD just can’t compare in my mind.
Even though I love hot yoga, I won’t be giving up cardio anytime soon (I’ve still been sticking with running/walking/elliptical about 5 days a week), but I feel like they compliment each other perfectly.
What I like to eat beforehand:
I’ve been experimenting with different foods before classes to find what works best for me. For my first class, I had a freshly made juice, but the juice was not enough energy for me to sustain a class and I felt very weak. I also tried various full-sized breakfasts with mixed results, sometimes feeling too full during class.
Lately, what works for me is eating 1 large banana and drinking 1 glass of V8 juice about 40 minutes before a class. Each time I have this snack, I have no weakness during class. I also make sure to drink lots of water before (starting the day before), during, and after class. It’s important to find that sweet spot where you aren’t too full, but you still have lots of energy for the class. If I take a long 90 minute class, I often have a medjool date or two in addition to this snack.
What I like to eat afterwards:
I crave water-based foods like vegetables, fruit, and big salads following a hot yoga class. Lately, I’ve been craving Green Monsters (made with coconut water for electrolytes), salads, veggie & hummus plates, Ezekiel bread/crackers, and Gazpacho.
I’m also newly obsessed with Nature’s Path Kamut Puff cereal thanks to Ange. I’ve been enjoying it with almond milk, ABU, fruit, and a bit of cinnamon. Cold and refreshing.
What I bring to class:
- Reusable tote bag for carrying belongings
- Align Ultra Lululemon yoga mat (I’m not really a fan of this mat because it is slippy! Anyone recommend any good non-slip mats?)
- 1 large bath towel (to place on mat)
- 1 small face towel (to wipe sweat)
- Sigg water bottle
- Keys, license, $20, yoga pass card
- Zip up jacket for before and after class (I shower at home)
My impression after 11 classes:
I feel like yoga is improving the relationship I have with myself. I used to be a skeptic when I heard that about yoga, thinking it wouldn’t apply to me. I was wrong! Yoga is just what I need in my life to help me center myself and thoughts. I have an anxious personality by nature, and yoga is therapy for my busy mind that never stops.
I’ve been excited not only by the changes I see (like toned muscles or improved flexibility), but feel in myself. I feel like yoga is the missing piece of the puzzle to my growth as an individual. I’m excited to explore yoga in many of its forms and styles down the road.

What’s your yoga experience? Love it, hate it? What styles have you tried and do any click or not click with you? What do you eat (or not eat) before a class?
[By the way, this review is not paid or sponsored by Moksha or anyone else. It’s just my personal experience, as always!]

I’m so envious I’ve been wanting to get into Hot Yoga for ages but I just dont live near enough to a city to have one around…you can do Yoga here but only a few varitiets… haha Im sensing a neiche market 0:-)
I just started yoga and it’s definitely clicking, but I have some trouble getting motivated to start! Once I do I love every minute, though! I can’t wait to improve :)
We have had such a rainy month, which is a HUGE blessing because there have been a lot of fires around here lately. Yoga seems to be the perfect thing for a rainy day. I haven’t been doing as much as I have wanted to lately but you have inspired me to today! I feel like such a newbie because the only yoga I know is the P90X one. I have never done any other yoga but would love to try a class. Our church has some awesome (so I have heard) instructors that have volunteered 2 classes a month. I am so excited to try them. I have wondered if the P90X version is much like regular yoga?
I love that the word Moksha means ‘Freedom’! I did not know that. It is wonderful learning something new today. Now I totally feel like doing Yoga :) Have a lovely day!
I have been dieing to try yoga!
I love the idea of yoga and loved my first few sessions. All I have available to me is power yoga and I just don’t find it meshing with me right now. Maybe sometime in the future. I loved the hot aspect of the class, though. Maybe someday I’ll find a yoga more suited to what I need.
I’ve never been to a class. I do all of my yoga at home, and I just sort of made up my own routine. I bought a yoga DVD a few years ago, and since then I’ve gotten others. I mainly like Sara Ivanhoe’s DVD’s, she seems personable and I really like her instruction and classes. I also have several books and magazines on the proper position and alignment. I mainly do my favorite poses, and incorporate a few poses of each at home: standing, forward bends, backbends, twists. I can’t do many inversions due to my neck. I hold each pose for 5-10 breaths. One of these days I’l like to take a class at the local studio.
My mat is an old Gaiam that was made out of recycled rubber. It seems to do the trick, although my hubby says I need to clean it – ha!
Love yoga! I do Flow and Power yoga classes and since I started my skin is better, I’m sleeping better and am noticing tone around my waist. Sounds like you’ll be yoga’ing for life! (and hope the sun comes out soon)
Yay! I’m a newbie yoga convert too!
I’m at about 3 months in and I can’t pass a mirror without admiring my much-improved posture.
(If you click my name, you’ll see my blog entry about yoga.)
I think it has helped a great deal with my mood and concentration. Good for you, I hope you keep going!!! (and me too)
I agree with others that I have to wear pants in hot yoga otherwise I slip and slide. Also, I don’t eat for two hours before class otherwise I feel like throwing up and I did…. once.
I wanted to suggest rather than getting a new mat you should try a no slip towel type mat on top of the mat you already have. I absolutely had to get one for hot yoga. It is made my Yogitoes and is a skidless yoga towel. Other people in my classes have just used regular towels and that doesnt work for me either.
Hope that helps and glad you found the missing piece to your fitness puzzle!
Angela…I’ve been reading your blog for about the past year and love everything you have to say, but had to comment on the new yoga in your life. I am so excited for you!! I’ve been in love with yoga for about 9 years and am so happy when others find their yoga niche. It can be life changing!
As for the mat…I have tried everything from the big Manduka to the skidless gloves, and the best option for me is a non-skid towel by ‘Yogitoes’. They make one for Lululemon, but you can also find them on Amazon.

Before class starts get the towel slightly wet at your hands and feet – it works best when wet. Many studios have spray bottles in the room for this use. After class throw it int he wash, hang it up and it will be dry in no time. Good luck with your yoga journey. Can’t wait to read more about it.
Namaste!
Susan
Thank you Susan :)
We’ve had tons of rain too, and fog for the last four days. I caught a glimpse of blue sky today, so I’m hopeful. :)
I went to yoga this morning too, but it was Kripalu Yoga, not hot. I don’t think we have any hot yoga studios near me, but I’d love to try it sometime. Any kind of yoga has a great way of complementing cardio – I’m with ya!
Yay yoga!!! I recommend getting a yoga towel. I personally use yogitoes, but any microfiber towel that is the approximate size of your mat will do. In my opinion, yoga mats are not going to anti-slip if you’re sweating a lot. There’s no way you can have an anti-slip mat if there are puddles of sweat on it! The only exception to this are mats that absorb moisture, like Lululemon’s the Mat, but then you have to wash the Mat more often, versus throwing a yoga towel in the wash and wiping your regular mat’s surface clean.
If you like to wear shorts but find your arms slip on bare skin, try putting your hand towel in between your legs and arms. This works for arm balances and twists where you need a bit of grip.
Thanks Tracy!!
I admit that I am skeptical about yoga too. But I really want to like it! I have tried some videos on my own at home, but I am attending my first class this afternoon. Can’t wait!!
Yoga = Love.
vinyasa flow, power, and hot, are favourites.
Your so right, a yoga dvd cannot compare to the energy of a class!
I didn’t know Moksha originated in Toronto; that’s good to know!! If you want to spend a bit more money and get a mat that should last for life, then you should go with this one:
http://shop.lululemon.com/products/clothes-accessories/women-mats/The-Mat-32428?cc=0001&skuId=3348879&catId=women-mats
I have it (in purple) and love it. You don’t slip and it’s just awesome. It has the ‘new’ smell for the first few uses, but once you get past that I definitely think it’s worth it!
Your description of yoga being a puzzle piece is so right on! I feel like when I do yoga regularly the rest of my exercise and my life flow better. And I just don’t feel right when I don’t have enough yoga in my life.
I love yoga, but there are no good studios around me.. and I feel like it’s so so expensive!
I am actually somewhat surprised that you can eat before a hot yoga class. I make it a point to NOT eat about 3 hours before class. If I have any food in my stomach what-so-ever I feel kind of queasy and I’m not able to push myself as hard and go into the stretches as deeply. BUT I do drink 1 coconut water (full of electrolytes) and a small glass of water with an Emergen-C packet right before class. The combination of the 2 gives me loads of energy and I am able to plow through class like hercules ;) haha. My hot yoga teacher actually recommended them to me and they really work! But everyone’s body is different.
Once you go Bikram, you’ll never go back!
Thanks so much for the enlightenment. I’ve never really done yoga, but have been wanting to try something formal for it’s benefits. Mainly due to my ever-whirring (is that a word?) mind. I’m glad that you said it helps your mind to relax, I think that yoga will be just perfect for me :)
