For whatever reason, Mother Nature has given Southern Ontario (and places nearby) a very wet Spring! Are you in one of those rainy areas too?
My umbrella gets lots of use lately. ;)
We’ve had steady rain for the past 5 days and there is more rain due for 3 out of 5 days in the week ahead.
Despite this weather, the rain doesn’t really bother me as much lately, which is pretty strange because I tend to always feel a dip in my mood when it rains.
Today, I realized that I have yoga to thank for my improved mood!
I started going to Moksha’s hot yoga classes on May 7th and I fell in love with it (read all about my first class here). I’ve been to about 11 classes now and I just can’t get enough. I’m really getting my money’s worth with my unlimited $40 intro monthly pass! I really wish I had tried this ages ago. I also think it would have helped me beat my Winter blues too.
“Moksha Hot Yoga was founded in Toronto, Canada in 2004 by yoga teachers Ted Grant and Jessica Robertson. Though a relative newcomer, Moksha has quickly gained popularity as over 30 affiliated studios have since opened worldwide, including in Canada, the United States, Switzerland, and the Caribbean. The Moksha method is a set series of about 40 poses done in a hot room. Moksha has strict "green" standards for keeping their studios environmentally friendly, including using sustainable building materials and natural cleansers. They are also committed to offering weekly low-cost classes with the money donated to locate charities and karma yoga opportunities to keep yoga classes more accessible.” [source]
From time to time, I wonder where the inflexible girl who hated yoga DVDs disappeared to. Well, I’m still here, but now I’ve found a style of yoga that clicks with me. And I’m so grateful that I have because I always felt like there was a missing piece to my fitness puzzle.
Like with most things, I don’t think hot yoga is for everyone (in fact, if you have health problems, such as a heart condition, it’s advised you do not take part), but I’m more convinced that there is a style of yoga that almost anyone can enjoy. You just have to find the right style that meshes with your personality and do what works for you.
The word Moksha means ‘Freedom’, which is exactly how I’ve been feeling lately. Freedom from anxiety, busy thoughts, tight muscles, and day-to-day ‘noise’.
Moksha Characteristics:
- Poses are traditional asanas (I heard there are about 40 yoga positions used)
- You are encouraged to set an intention (in your mind) at start of class
- Emphasis is on deep breathing, enhancing flexibility, and balance
- Breath-synchronized movements – the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale.
- Several classes are offered: Moksha, Moksha Flow, Flow, and LYM.
- Classes range from 60-90 minutes (75 min is my sweet spot!)
- The pace is quick and heart rate is elevated throughout class
- Room is heated to 37 Celsius
- Instructors will often do gentle adjustments, if its ok with you (personally I appreciate occasional adjustments because they help me find proper form)
- Instructors have the flexibility to slightly adapt each class, so no class is the same
- Friendly to beginners (trust me on this one!)
- Savasana (lying flat on the mat and focusing on breath) occurs at the start of class, middle class, and at the very end.
- There are a couple minutes of intense ab work during the floor series.
- It is a great workout if you want it to be and you push yourself. My muscles are often sore after classes!
After just 11 classes, I’ve noticed an improvement in my focus, muscle tone, breathing, flexibility, posture, and balance. I feel strong, aware, peaceful, and happier than I have in a long time. Eric tells me that my skin feels incredibly soft, which is an added bonus from all that salty sweat exfoliating the skin. I also love the class atmosphere…the energy from the room is really contagious and a yoga DVD just can’t compare in my mind.
Even though I love hot yoga, I won’t be giving up cardio anytime soon (I’ve still been sticking with running/walking/elliptical about 5 days a week), but I feel like they compliment each other perfectly.
What I like to eat beforehand:
I’ve been experimenting with different foods before classes to find what works best for me. For my first class, I had a freshly made juice, but the juice was not enough energy for me to sustain a class and I felt very weak. I also tried various full-sized breakfasts with mixed results, sometimes feeling too full during class.
Lately, what works for me is eating 1 large banana and drinking 1 glass of V8 juice about 40 minutes before a class. Each time I have this snack, I have no weakness during class. I also make sure to drink lots of water before (starting the day before), during, and after class. It’s important to find that sweet spot where you aren’t too full, but you still have lots of energy for the class. If I take a long 90 minute class, I often have a medjool date or two in addition to this snack.
What I like to eat afterwards:
I crave water-based foods like vegetables, fruit, and big salads following a hot yoga class. Lately, I’ve been craving Green Monsters (made with coconut water for electrolytes), salads, veggie & hummus plates, Ezekiel bread/crackers, and Gazpacho.
I’m also newly obsessed with Nature’s Path Kamut Puff cereal thanks to Ange. I’ve been enjoying it with almond milk, ABU, fruit, and a bit of cinnamon. Cold and refreshing.
What I bring to class:
- Reusable tote bag for carrying belongings
- Align Ultra Lululemon yoga mat (I’m not really a fan of this mat because it is slippy! Anyone recommend any good non-slip mats?)
- 1 large bath towel (to place on mat)
- 1 small face towel (to wipe sweat)
- Sigg water bottle
- Keys, license, $20, yoga pass card
- Zip up jacket for before and after class (I shower at home)
My impression after 11 classes:
I feel like yoga is improving the relationship I have with myself. I used to be a skeptic when I heard that about yoga, thinking it wouldn’t apply to me. I was wrong! Yoga is just what I need in my life to help me center myself and thoughts. I have an anxious personality by nature, and yoga is therapy for my busy mind that never stops.
I’ve been excited not only by the changes I see (like toned muscles or improved flexibility), but feel in myself. I feel like yoga is the missing piece of the puzzle to my growth as an individual. I’m excited to explore yoga in many of its forms and styles down the road.

What’s your yoga experience? Love it, hate it? What styles have you tried and do any click or not click with you? What do you eat (or not eat) before a class?
[By the way, this review is not paid or sponsored by Moksha or anyone else. It’s just my personal experience, as always!]

I’ve always wanted to try a yoga class but couldn’t justify the expense. Then I got pregnant (yay!) and a lot of people recommended I at least try a prenatal yoga DVD, if I couldn’t get to a class. I love it. Any time I’m feeling exhausted or achey, 45 minutes of yoga helps me a lot: I relax, get the aches out, and sleep better at night.
Your reviews of hot yoga make me really want to try it… maybe that can be my gift to myself to start getting back in shape after baby’s arrival!
I hear ya on the yoga DVDs. I’ve done yoga for 9 years and I CANNOT STAND yoga DVDs. However, ask your instructor if she’d mind if you recorded her classes for when you’re out of town. I use my iPhone to record my favorite instructor and that way when I’m away and can’t get to a class I just start up the recording and off I go! It’s wonderful to be able to carry your favorite instructor around in your pocket for emergencies! :)
I’m glad you’re enjoying it so much! I am a strong advocate of yoga and hearing about converts makes my day!
Namaste
great idea!
You can also buy a moksha cd from their mokshayoga.ca site, either a 60 or 90 min class.
oh I didnt know that…cool!
I think I need to give yoga another chance! I’ve only done it a couple times and didn’t like it. Probably because I was awful at it. I used to have the mind frame that my workouts had to be intense and sweaty, but I’m slowly changing that mind frame! I’ve fallen in love with pilates because I started doing at-home videos while my little guy was sleeping. It took me several weeks of doing it a few times a week before I realized I loved it! So I think I need to try yoga again and give it a long enough shot to fall in love with it!
Look up Manduka mats. Great company with a great MO. I have one of their Pro series which is durable (almost a year old and not a nick or scratch on it), grippy without being sticky, and cleans easily. At six feet tall, I have the long size which, even if you aren’t tall, just is so nice to stretch out upon. Also, their Pro series mats come with a lifetime warranty. Once purchased, if it wears out or malfunctions in any way, you can send it back for a replacement. Worth it so far, definitely. I use mine pretty much every day for both my personal practice and when I teach my classes.
So neat that you are getting into yoga! Very happy for you. :)
I love hot yoga.. I don’t know much about the different types of yoga, but I do love how great and free of toxins I feel once I sweat everything out… stretching and strengthining my body!
Yoga mats, Manduka Black Mat Pro. Period. That’s all you will ever need again in life. The regular length is long enough, you dont need the extra long (just gets ridic heavy). And I am almost 5’11” and still dont find I “need” the extra long. It’s the only mat that my toenails dont erode and that I dont slip on. I can say this after a decade of use and also trying about 20 other kinds of mats.
Eating. Traditional ashtanga yoga = you dont eat til youre done with your practice. This means you practice in the morning b/c you dont eat til you’re done with yoga. However, whatever works for the person is what I say they should do..eat, not eat, drink, not drink…it’s like anything else, no one is the same and finding what works can take a long time.
” I feel like yoga is the missing piece of the puzzle to my growth as an individual. I’m excited to explore yoga in many of its forms and styles down the road.”–
AMEN!!!
When I walked into my first yoga class 12 years ago, I had no idea what to expect. I fell so in love with it that I knew I would be a yoga teacher. And I went to costa rica to learn to teach just 6 mos after my first class. Spent a month in the rainforest and changed my life.
Yoga has guided me on and off the mat, so much. Pregnancy, parenting, childbirth, patience, in my relationships with others…it always, ALL of it, all comes back to yoga. I could not imagine my life without yoga, both teaching and as a forever student.
In my yoga tab, I have a very extensive post called Yoga FAQ’s where I touch on just about everything humanly possible yoga related from music to props to dvd’s to clothes to styles to vocabulary.
So happy for you…Namaste!!!!

I love the way I feel after yoga. Like your on top of the world! Before we moved to Montana I had a place I would go regularly and an instructor I loved! She always had us set an intention and clear our minds. It actually was better for me if I went alone, and not with a friend because I would randomly try and talk to them during the practice.
I tried hot yoga for the first time last week at Moksha Yoga, and I seriously found it to be one of the hardest workouts I have ever done. Despite that, I loved it. I learned how terrible my balance and flexibility are (seriously awful!), and it made me so motivated to work towards improving it. I also crave similar foods afterwards like you, my first class I followed up with a huge and super satisfying salad.
If your only complaint about your mat is that it’s slippy, I’d recommend trying a Yogitoes towel. They’re spendy, but so worth it for the hot classes. The back side has little rubber dots that keep it anchored to your mat (it seriously doesn’t go anywhere), and the towel itself is made of this wonderful wicking fabric that doesn’t get slippery as it gets wet. In fact, it actually works a bit better when it’s not 100% dry. I thought it was ridiculous when I first saw them, but I absolutely love mine and even use it for cool yoga classes (because I am a crazy heavy sweater, so it helps there, too).
I once definitely hated yoga, but then one time I tried a gentle hatha class and I just started loving yoga. I find it’s definitely instructure dependent. Last year I tried Bikrams and I actually really enjoyed it; though the structure and idea that there is one way and only one way to do yoga doesn’t jive with me. I have tried Moksha a couple times and I really enjoy it. If it weren’t so expensive I’d go so much more (I’ve been attending community sessions that are only $10). Maybe I’ll get a starting pass for June…
I’m so happy to hear that you are loving yoga! I agree with you that doing a dvd at home really doesn’t compare. My favorite yoga is hot vinyasa flow, which is 90 minutes and sounds a lot like your class. Personally, my mat isn’t anything spectacular, but I got a Manduka towel from Lululemon that covers my entire mat, and it’s fabulous! No slipping and it’s easy to wash and reuse!

Someone start a Moksha Yoga in Windsor, ON please! I got hooked on Moksha in Waterloo (same experience as you… great workout, amazing mental clarity and the only cure for an anxious mindset)… and I recently moved to Windsor. There is no moksha here! There is only one studio that does hot yoga, but they do it with space heaters… not the same!
I am so happy for Angela. I feel the exact same way from what I get out of my practice too. I think if the entire world did yoga and dancing for that matter, that there would be no war, no yelling at eachother, no road rage (LA is where I live!), not so much bad energy and anger. More blissful minds who are intune with their feelings and who are realizing that we have so much everyday! You know what I mean? Because when you are present– you are present–you are present! I love walks too for this feeling and being in nature and with animals. :)
I think you are also on the right track on your pre and post choices for fuel and recovery.

I usually go to moksha yoga at 7am and a big glass of orange juice when I wake up usually does the trick. I bring nuts to class to eat after so I can wait to be home for breakfast :). I add a little bit of lemon juice and a pinch of sugar to my water and it is really refreshing during class.
I have the manduka pro mat & it doesn’t slip at all. Expensive but worth the money. You won’t ever need to buy an other mat!
I used to think “Oh yoga isn’t a workout – it’s a great supplement to my workouts, but not a real workout in and of itself”. I was very wrong. I’ve been taking anusara yoga for a few weeks now and I’ve never felt better. I didn’t realize how quickly you can improve with yoga. My first class was torture and now I’m doing handstands (with wall assistance)! Not only that, but yoga is probably the only type of workout I’ve done that really improves my body image. As I’m in downward facing dog for the umpteenth time, I have a chance to stare at my thighs and instead of the usual hatred towards them, I found myself actually appreciating them. This has never happened!
I LOVE Moksha!
I have tried all kinds of yoga and it is my favourite! Fortunately, there is a studio across the street from my house!
I have never actually tried any yoga classes….I used to think it would be to slow and boring as I like heavy duty workouts where I feel like I burned 1000 calories!! But, I have been learning and seeing lately that yoga is actually for really strong people!!! I need to try a class!!!
I miss hot yoga! I haven’t been able to do it for several months due to it’s high cost, but I can’t wait to get back into it! Doing Bikram once or twice a week makes me feel so strong and confident. Since stopping I’ve been experiencing back pain and hip pain; I’ve realized what an important part of my fitness routine it had become.
I love hot yoga to! When my knee was injured last month it was literally the only thing that relieved the pain. It just loosens me up so much and makes me feel incredible! Glad you found a style that suits you! :)
Hi Angela,
I discovered your blog a few months back, and I have been enjoying reading about all of your food adventures. I used to be a competitive runner in college, but I found yoga a few years ago and it has really changed how I approach my own health and fitness. I love yoga because it forces you to see yourself as you really are, and helps counter many of the unhealthy attitudes and habits so prominent in western culture. I think it complements the attitude that you espouse here on your blog as well. I hope you keep sharing stories about your yoga adventures. Thank you for being such an inspiration :)
