I finally got the courage to slice open my FIG today!
WOW!
More brain food, perhaps? ;)
Here are the nutritional stats for one small fresh fig:
They pack a lot of potassium in just one tiny lil guy!
I sliced it in half and scooped it out with a spoon. Although, I read that you can eat the skin too if that floats your boat.
I decided that fig would be great on toast with peanut butter, so I scooped it out and called it ‘Nature’s jam’.
This was very exciting.
It tasted really good. The ‘fig jam’ was light tasting, not too sweet, and had a slight crunch from the seeds. It was basically heaven in my mouth! Since I only had 1 fig, I just used that one, but next time I would probably use two on toast because I found myself wanting more of it and less of the peanut butter (if you can believe it).
So there you have it- my first experience with a fresh fig! I will certainly be buying these lil guys more often. :)
Today’s question: Do you eat any ‘unusual’ or exotic fruits or vegetables? What are they?
I used to work in a produce shop for my first job when I was 14 years old. I worked there for about 3 years and tried many different fruits and vegetables during that time. The one I loved the most was the ‘Ugli’ fruit. They are just SO delicious. I highly suggest trying one when you get a chance!

I have a full day of baking cookies ahead of me. I also need to squeeze in a house clean, menu planning for Eric’s birthday, and grocery shopping.
Happy Friday! :D
That toast looks SO GOOD. I love that flavor combo.
I totally agree about the ugly fruit! My dad always brought home “weird” fruit for me to try :-) It is awesome!
I love figs! They’re in season right now so I have been treating myself to a basket (or several) each week at the farmer’s market. I also like dried figs, especially stuffed with a walnut or a piece of dark chocolate. Yum!
I’ve never actually tried a fig before, but it sure sounds good! It would be fun to mix that in oatmeal or greek yogurt too… YUMMY! :)
I always like trying new produce, but I don’t know that I eat any that’s too unique on a regular basis. I’ve tried red bananas, artichoke, and yellow carrots though!

I love figs! I’m from the Southern U.S. so they grow down here. They’re actually still hard to come by in the store (I think they have a very short season) but my grandmother had a HUGE fig tree in her back yard when I was growing up. I love them so much (and they make awesome preserves), but a word to the wise- if you eat too many your mouth will start to burn. I’ve learned this the hard way.
dragonfruit is so delicious! I’ll be going to Hong Kong soon to visit my family and am so excited for all their exotic fruits. What I HATE though is that big yellow stinky thing. Durien, I think it’s called? I can’t remember but it smells like crap, and though I heard that they actually taste delicious, I could not for the life of god stand the texture of taste of that thing. Kind of reminded me of really disgusting chicken flavored bread pudding. Plus they are super expensive and I don’t understand why.
My exotic fruit list:
Lychees (multiple varieties)
Longans
Durians
Mangosteen
Over 6 varieties of mangoes :D
Dragonfruit (white and magenta inside)
Cherimoya
Guanabana
Grapples
Kumquats
And I hope to keep adding!! :) I loveee fruit hunting
I LOVED figs when I was little because one time my uncle told me how every time he ate them he thought of summers in Greece. It made them seem exotic, and worked will with my overactive kid imagination.
I LOVE dried figs, I must go on a quest for fresh ones!!! I always spread it on toast with PB or cream cheese too. And I had no idea they were so high in potassium! No wonder a dried fig makes a great pre-run snack :)
My favourite “exotic” fruit is guava. I wish so much that the Superstore here carried them. I would pay the ridiculous price for them!
Mmm looks good! The two new-to-me fruits I’ve given a try this year are mangos. I never used to buy them unless they were already chopped up. I looove them now!
I’ve never tried a fresh fig before – I need to try that!
When my daughter was little, each week we would pick up something we didn’t know and try it – Hannah still remembers getting the coconut – it probably took us 30 minutes to finally open it up and we both gagged on the coconut milk!
my grandparents used to live right next door when i was a little girl and i would always go to their house and pick the figs off of their tree. i would eat them straight off the tree but using them as jam sounds wonderful!
hope you have a great day :)
I cannot believe you have never had a fig before. They’re my favorite summer fruit! It’s nice to hear that you liked it because figs are a bit unpredictable and you can never know if it’s going to be good or not (when buying I mean). Over here figs are often eaten with honey and yogurt or ricotta (I know you don’t eat dairy though).
ooo maybe I’ll have to get some of these little gems!

oooo. Fresh figs are great when they are around. The season is pretty short if you are not in an area the is line with fig trees :)
Try them on salad or with a savory pairing. It is awesome. Think sweet figs with balsamic or a bit of fig with a tamari almond.
After reading a food-pornish description of fresh figs I was dying to give them a shot! The ones I bought however were mushy and gross :O(. I’m not giving up though – I plan to buy some more soon! Yours looks delish so I just need to find one like that!
Love figs also, we’re very lucky to have a fig tree in our backyard. My favourite fruit however is the feijoa mmmmm
figs are my favorite fruit! i eat em like grapes!!!
I love figs. I eat them whole typically, but I like your idea of just using the insides as “jam”…I’m not your typical fruit eater (ie not the biggest fan of oranges, apples, even banannas-although I do go on kicks of eating them, I guess my body’s way of getting the nutrients it needs, when I start “craving” them) but I ADORE mango and starfruits. I also eat a lot of kiwifruits for their potassium delivery…oh and how yummy they are! haha :D
I love exotic fruits. Growing up in Asia, I definitely got
the share of it
soursop, cherimoya, jack fruit, star fruit, durian
lychee, guava, mangosteen, Rambutan,Kumquats,Longans
Dragonfruit, snake skin fruit, Syzygium samarangense ( I can’t find its english name but it’s really delicious),loquat
and also the more commonly found exotic fruits
but most of them are only available in asia and
if they do ship here they are super expensive
