Dirrty Green Monster Oats

August 19, 2009

IMG_2360

I know, I had to read the title twice too!

A lovely reader named Keri, submitted her favourite way to eat a green monster. It was just so cool and unique I knew I had to try it out.

Dirrty Green Monster Oats

by Keri

Ingredients:

  • 1 Green Monster (prepare as usual)
  • 1/2-2/3 cup regular oats
  • Water (if needed)
  • Coconut oil (I tossed some in during cooking)
  • Chocolate protein powder
  • Sweetener (optional)
  • Fun toppings of your choice

Directions: You start by making a green monster the good, old fashioned way in the blender. Next pour the green monster, along with 2/3 cup of regular oats into a pot on the stove and stir. Cook the oats like you normally would and add water if necessary. Once the green mixture is cooked place in a bowl. You can eat them hot or pop it in the fridge for later. Just prior to serving sprinkle some chocolate protein powder over the oats (to create the ‘dirt’).

Keri says, ‘Then, dig in the “dirt”, find the green goo, and consume! Yumm!’

By the way- my batch of green monsters froze beautifully. I can’t even tell that I froze them. I froze them in small Pyrex glass containers. My stash is getting low though so I really hope my appliances come this week!

I tried it out this morning and it was really fun. I haven’t had this much fun eating something in a long time. I felt like a kid in a sandbox. I used Amazing Grass Chocolate Meal Infusion Powder as the dirt. :) I also added in my banana during the cooking process so it would be chunky.

Now most of you probably know by now that I am not a huge oatmeal fan. I don’t know why, but whenever I eat the regular oats I feel sick afterwards. Well, not after this breakfast! It was just delightful. I threw on some cocao nibs for some crunch.

I loved how the chocolate powder got all gooey when it touched the wet oat mixture.

I think this would be a huge hit with kids, wouldn’t it?

It was dirty and FUN! This would be REALLY good cold, right out of the fridge.

You can read Keri’s full recipe, as well as other reader green monster recipes here!

Do you make any unusual breakfasts? What are they?

What a fun recipe! I’ll have to try that when I get chocolate protein powder on hand!

I like to make a sweet potato in the microwave and top half with hummus and half with cottage cheese for breakfast. I know it sounds strange, but is feeling and delicious! I prefer savory and this has a nice combo of a bit of sweet with plenty of salty.
Have a great day!

LOLOLOL I’ve made green oats before, but they’ve never looked so swampy. That has got to be the best-lookin bowl of green oats ever. You should totally have a Halloween breakfast party, come October!! ;)

P.S. Thanks for the chia pudding recipe as well. I just bought some chia and didn’t know what to do with them! Now I know– yay!

I stayed up wayyyy past my bedtime yesterday looking over your bloggie and your bakery. I am so inspired by you. I had also commented previously about your chia pudding recipe getting me a kick in the booty to get on the chia bandwagon..and I am. Going to WF now for the cha cha chia seeds :)

I wouldn’t say that I make anything “weird”, but my favorite thing to indulge on is eating leftover potatoes for breakfast. I know that is actually kinda weird. I typically throw them into an omelette of some sort.

Ha, that bowl would definitely be a hit with kids! You could even find something to use as “worms” in there ;) I’ve never used protein powder as a topping before, that’s a great idea!

ha, what a crazy looking breakfast :) very creative!

I don’t think my breakfasts are unusual, but my husband probably thinks my oatmeal/egg white pancakes and bfast cookies are a little strange…not to mention the green smoothies :)

Hm, I’ve put oats in my green monsters before, if that counts as “weird” :)

My favorite “unusual” breakfast is leftovers from dinner the night before. People think it is strange that I can eat spaghettis and meat sauce for breakfast – but why not :-)

Those oats look ridiculously gross and cool – I wanna try!! Haha! I love the idea of a Halloween breakfast that someone else mentioned!

Hmmm, I think the word “unusual” does seem to fit this one. I don’t know that this much green would go over well in our household!

Angela – I’ve been sharing your website to all of my facebook friends – it’s me – if you’re getting a lot of strange traffic from fb today :)

Today I made my first green monster (I think it was the peanut butter banana green monster – I didn’t have the hemp and something else)…It was VERY good!

Thank you!!! I do fell like the energy is back!

That looks weird but also good! I might try that this weekend and I’ll definitely be freezing my GM’s from here on out since they seem to work out just the same.

GM popsicles would also be a fun treat, especially in the summer.

That stuff DOES look like fun! I wonder if a kid would like it, as you said, since it’s green and dirty looking? Like those “dirt” cupcakes with the gummy bear worms in them? My breakfasts are usually pretty normal, though I did mix up grated carrots, apple sauce, raisins, and oats in a bowl to sit overnight for tomorrow’s breakfast. I’ll let you know how they are, they’re not very pretty, that’s for sure!

Hi Angela,

I made your vegan chia pudding this morning and it was soooo good and I felt AWESOME all morning. Instead of using soymilk, I made some hemp milk (my recipe: http://www.pocoleon.com/blog/?p=3107) and it was THE BOMB! I’ve had hemp, chia, and cacao seperately several times, but it really seems to multiply the effect when you combine all 3.

Thanks for a great new breakfast!
