The other night, Eric and I were cruising the aisles of Home Depot. Also known as, my Favourite Place On Earth.
Or my Least Favourite Place on Earth but I really can’t complain. I do drag Eric to Michaels (his Favourite Place on Earth) so it is only fair that he drags me to Home Depot.
Anyways, we were looking to purchase new plug plates outlets for our bedroom. Or whatever one would call those things.
I was helping Eric search for a specific kind of outlet among a sea of outlets and he said, ‘I think we should get the baby proof outlets, don’t you?’
I stopped and thought about it for a moment.
Finally, I said, ‘Are you pregnant!?’
Eric paused for a moment, rubbing his belly. He looked at me with a straight face and said, ‘I surely hope not, I haven’t been taking my Folic Acid lately!’
And then I almost peed myself.
I think it was the one and only occasion that I have ever had a smile on my face in Home Depot.
[And for the record….no, I’m not pregnant. But Eric might be…]
So while I don’t have any buns in the oven, I do have something delicious in the oven to show you tonight!
Crispy Chickpea Bites
Despite not being fried, these bites are crispy and have a soft, creamy interior with lots of flavour. I hesitate to call the bites ‘Falafel’ because they aren’t like traditional Falafel, but are perhaps a hybrid between Falafel and a chickpea burger! Did I mention they are super quick and easy to make?
Adapted from Foodista.
Ingredients:
- 1.5 cups cooked chickpeas
- 2 tbsp chopped red onion
- 2 large garlic cloves, chopped
- 3-4 tbsp flour, to thicken mixture for shaping
- 1/4 tsp cumin
- 1/4 tsp coriander
- 1/4 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- Roll in breadcrumbs before baking (optional, but I liked it)
Directions: Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with parchment. Combine the chickpeas, onion, garlic, flour, spices, oil, and salt, and pulse in a food processor until the mixture is well combined and smooth. Form the mixture into 8 small balls or patties with wet hands. Roll each bite in breadcrumbs if preferred. Bake in oven for approx 30-35 minutes or until crispy and golden. Serve in a pita or wrap with hummus, veggies, tahini sauce, etc. or on top of a salad.
These took me by surprise! I was not expecting much from them, but they were quite addicting. The exterior really crisps up, but the interior stays soft with a texture similar to hummus. They were great on their own, but I really enjoyed them in this tortilla wrap with spinach, tomato, back pepper, and hummus.
Basically, they are just another vehicle for more hummus. And I’m ok with that.
So did you get the baby proof ones in the end? ;)
And for the record I call them plug plates too.
Love the Home Depot story. Nothing like some controversy to make a dull time fun :)
I lived on falafel when I was living in London and even when travelling. There is a chain of vegetarian falafel and salad pitta joints around Europe called Maoz. Man, they were my cheap backpacker buy every day and it was love!!
Right, now I know what I’m having for lunch! I love falafel, and chickpea burgers (and just chickpeas generally!) so these look perfect for me! Only my food processor is broken…hmmm…I guess I’ll try it in my blender then! :)
Hahaha Eric is so funny!! This made me laugh!! :D
I have a feeling these chickpea treats will become a winter staple!
Haha Eric is too funny! I hope he isn’t hit too hard by morning sickness. ;)
Haha Home Depot is one of my favorite places on earth too ;)
Those burger/falafel look amazing by the way!
even though hummus isn’t my comfort food i still think we could all use a little more hummus in our lives. and the vehicles for that the better :)
I love hummous in any shape or form. And those burgers look amaaaaaaaaazing!
you and eric crack me up! i feel like you two should have a reality series. these bites look wonderful.
i recently tried your in a jiffy burgers and they were amazing!!! they kept me full hours too! perfect lunch!
I remember a couple of years ago when my husband suggested we get a four-door car because of impending parenthood (the first time he had ever hinted at it) and it was, like, The Greatest Thing He Had Ever Said To Me. Now I am 9 months pregnant, so Ang, watch out! Lolz
What the world needs now is more vehicles for hummus-consumption. I mean, seriously.
Ugh, Lowe’s is worse than Home Depot and my husband says about once a week, “do you want to go to Lowe’s this afternoon?”. Let’s just say it’s a rhetorical question and the only thing that makes it bearable is the garden department, which I sneak off to asap!
That convo between you and Eric is hilarious! You are both rather quick with the comebacks!
Eric’s another planner huh? ;)
LOL i like that, especially Eric’s comment back.
Those look absolutely tasty, i want to try making something like that one day.
These look delish! They are very similar to the veggie burgers I make and remind me a lot of falafel. I will have to try using the oven or toaster oven for crispiness. Thanks for sharing!
Bahaha, you and Eric crack me up! I definitely need to give this recipe a try when I get back home and into my own kitchen.
-K
HAHAHA, that is halarious!!! What would he do without you ;) Loving the chickpea patties. I always eat chickpeas (usually just throw them on salad or with a sweet potato, etc. when I’m in a rush) and am needing a new way to make them exciting and fast! Thanks!
So why did he want baby safe outlet plugs? :p
I am always OK with hummus vehicles. The more the better.
I think I’ll be making falafels very very soon!
Those look really good!
I hope Eric has an easy pregnancy. ;)
I LOVE IT! The dinner look amazing!
I too, am a Home Depot hater. In fact, I have been banned by my husband from entering HD anymore because I always seem to get into “it” with the so called employees there. I’m only allowed to go to Lowes now ;)
VIVA LOWES!!
PAAHHAHAHA! Health nerd humor. I love it!!
Oh, how I loathe Home Depot! Why do guys love it so much?! And why do they make us go there with them? Life’s unanswered questions…;)
Um, hello lunch! The more ways to eat hummus, the better!
These look amazing!!! I can’t wait to make them this weekend! I love hummus, but I will admit that I sometimes get a bit bored with it. I love that you can buy all types/flavours of it, but it is still in the end hummus. I think this is a great way to get the goodness of hummus in a new, exciting and yummy way! Thanks for this recipe – I’m passing it along to all my vegan friends :)
I think my meat eating boyfriend would enjoy these as well!!!
I totally just experimented with this same thing last Monday night!!!! After I tasted the first one, I was kind of disappointed, so I added some chopped, roasted red peppers. Made a huge, yummy difference!
YUMMMMMMMM!!
ps. i call home depot my nemesis.
the husband LOVES
but
there is nothing
FOR ME there!!
This makes me sad because I have NO tahini! But lovely recipe!
That is so funny! I love when couples can be ridiculous together :)
I made “falafel” for dinner last night too! Mine didn’t turn out that well. They were still decent, but I can’t get that traditional falafel taste to come through. Yours look great though!
Hahahaha! I loved this Friday Laugh! Too cute!
This sounds like something Ryan would have said to me….Its funny how our men Do pick up on what we talk about ;)
These crispy chickpeas look wonderful :) Thanks for another great recipe!
xxoo
Those look SO yummy and easy to make! They would be delicious in a big ol’ greek salad with feta – YUM :)
Another amazing recipe. I just can’t wait to try them all, just as soon as I can make it to the store again to resupply.
Love, love, the Home Depot story. I’m thinking the baby proof “plug plates” weren’t such a bad idea though. Do you have friends or family that might ever come over?
Can I be the first to say CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING FB CHALLENGE 6!!
WINNER’S CHOICE AGAIN?!? I’M SO HAPPY FOR YOU!
Congrats, Angela, on advancing in the challenge and for getting Winner’s Choice again!! I have to say how utterly impressed I am with your blog, how you present your food and walk through the preparation of your recipes. Your hard work, and commitment to what you do, shines through in every post.
I cannot wait to see what you come up with for the next challenge. I think your entries have been ones that everyone can enjoy, vegan or not. Good luck to you on the next challenge! I have no doubt you’ll do well.
Wait.. so why DID he want to get the baby proof outlets!?
Hi there…
Just wanted to tell you….I made your fantasitc chickpea bites for lunch today….YUM!

Eric is too funny! The chickpea bites look great.
YES, YES, YES!
these are perfect
Hey — congrats on winning the FoodBuzz food challenge “road trip”! the vegan pralines really look divine, very professional!
Hilarious! Eric sounds like he’s got a great sense of humor :)
I also adore Home Depot..not! When we were remodeling our house, we were going to “Homey D’s” on a daily basis…ugh. I avoid that place like the plague!
Home Depot, the bane of my existence! We recently replaced all the outlets, switches & plates in our house (last Sunday).. I let the boys take care of it and I baked :)
These bites look awesome! Must make.
I made these this afternoon and had to test one fresh out of the oven. Very yummy! I’m not sure how I’ll serve them, but they will all be eagerly eaten up!
oh the great stories that come out of home depot ; ) too funny
and i must make these chickpea bites!!!
Saw the link on “That’s Fit”!
I think I commented when you originally did this post,
but I just thought it was cool that you were featured!
Congrats :)
Lol Eric
Babyproof now and I’ll send over the baby’s to test anytime :)
I love Isa’s chickpea burgers, but have always fried them :o( I will have to try your baked hybrids. lol… Hummus goes with almost everything. hehehe
I’m making these right away and i read and re-read the recipe – where/when does the oil go in?
I made these last weekend and then yesterday made them with azuki beans. Both = yum! I linked to your site on my blog today. Thanks for the great recipe!
