[The gorgeous Calgary, Alberta]
If you haven’t noticed over the past few years, I’m definitely on team goal setting when it comes to the New Year (and well, the entire year for that matter). I know a lot of people don’t believe in setting resolutions or goals at the start of the year, but I find goals are a great way for me to figure out what I want to strive for and how I’m going to get there. I look at it as a way to review the past year, see what worked and what didn’t, and then decide how I want to proceed, grow, and challenge myself in the new year ahead.
I also don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing when you get to the end of the year and there are goals that weren’t completed. As many of you mentioned in my 2011 recap post, having uncompleted goals is completely natural. As the year progresses, often do our plans and goals. One person can only do so much and it’s normal for uncompleted goals to carry over into the new year. To me, the point of a goal is to move in the direction where you want to be, not attain perfection.
This year, Eric and I had a fun discussion about 2011 and what we want to accomplish in 2012. It was a great way to share our own goals, current struggles, and things we want to do in the future. Many of our goals are the same, but many of them are different so we created a spreadsheet to write down his goals, my goals, and goals we share together. It was a fun experience because I feel like I can now support all of his goals (since I know about them) and the same goes for him.
My theme of 2012: Break out of the comfort zone
As a Taurus, I crave comfort and routine (and hate change most of the time), however this can easily translate into lack of growth and failing to step outside of my comfort zone. I often prefer to take the safe and comfortable choice instead of trying something new. In 2012, I will challenge myself by doing things that I normally avoid out of fear and just take the leap anyways. I’ve been working on this since fall 2011 and I’m ready for more. There are a lot of things I want to do with the blog (such as visiting an animal sanctuary and doing an interview), so I’ve made a list of things to keep me on track. My plan is to write at least one thing on my calendar a week that I want to try.
Goals for 2012:
1. Track expenses and create a budget using mint.com
Eric and I recently decided that we need a budget overhaul, so we’ve decided to use Mint.com after much debate.
2. Sign with publisher & finish cookbook manuscript in 2012
This is my biggest, time-consuming, scary goal of 2012.
3. Submit to Foodgawker and Tastespotting on a regular basis
I used to submit my photos and recipes to Foodgawker and Tastespotting on a regular basis, but I got out of the habit last year when things got busy. It can be quite time-consuming (especially if you’ve had 10 rejections in a row like I have!! ^#%^&%#@#^&), but it’s also a great way to share recipes with the food community and encourage new readers.
4. Train for a couple races and strength train 2x a week
After a break in 2011, I‘m ready for more racing. I’m planning on running a 5k in April so far and I’d like to train for another 10k or half marathon, depending on my schedule. I also want to keep up with my strength training to a minimum of twice per week using at-home DVD workouts and effective body-resistance exercises such as push-ups, squats, lunges, etc.
5. Organize & Simplify
Being bad at organizing like I am is not fun. For one, things are disorganized, cluttered, and difficult to find. Secondly, it ends up taking up more of my time in the end because I’m often searching for missing items or documents. If I would’ve taken the time to slow down and do it right, I would not only feel more orderly and calm, but I would probably end up saving time.
I started by cleaning out all of my cupboards and pantry at the end of 2011. I donated a bunch of things I don’t need and opened up a lot of cupboard space. Other organizational goals include keeping my virtual and physical desktops clear, organizing my photography files, legible hand-writing (ha), creating an organized system for my cookbook materials, and simplifying living space and doing away with annoying clutter.
I’ll let you know how that one goes.
6. Get back to my positive mindset
I’ve felt internal negativity creep up in my life lately and I need to get back to my positive mindset. Negativity is absolutely toxic in so many ways, isn’t it? It prevents us from being all we can be by sucking the life out of every thought, action, and intention. It kills creativity, personal expression, and the courage to believe in ourselves. The same thing goes for negative people in our lives. As Caitlin says, negative people are Energy Vampires. Not only do they drain themselves in the process, but they can suck the life out of you if you let them.
Zen Habits has a great article on 7 simple tips for dealing with negative people if you want to read more on the topic.
7. The Wild Card from 2011 will happen in 2012
Hopefully sooner than later because I can’t keep it a secret much longer.
And that’s all she wrote.
Congrats to Veronica! I have emailed you to collect your contact info. Thanks to everyone for participating!
How will you step outside of your comfort zone in 2012?
I’m trying to be more of a risk taker. I’ve always gone the “safe” route and have admired people who aren’t afraid to put themselves out on a limb. I also want to adapt a more positive attitude in my life. The latter part of 2011 was a real downer in the work area. So far 2012 is looking better and my attitude is improving, too.
i’m continuing my yoga practice – which is extremely scary and hard for me since i’m so used to long-distance running!
Those are wonderful goals and we have the same theme of stepping outside the comfort zone this year. It can add SO much to your life!
I can’t believe YOU ever get rejected from Foodgawker/TS!! Your pics are simply lovely and please don’t take this wrong but it make someone like me still working on composition and lighting feel slightly less inadequate that someone of your talent still gets the occasion poo poo from them. Keep submitting!
Thank you! I feel like I still have a lot to work on but it’s a challenge I guess, even if frustrating sometimes.
What is ‘The Wild Card’? An oh she glows baby?
Lol that’s the first thing I thought of.
haha nope that is not the wild card. im not ruling that out in the future (I would talk about it openly if we were planning on it soon though).
Rats, that was my thought….
Oooo darn!!! That was my #1 first thought too!!! Hmmm can’t wait to hear what it is! :)
Aww that’s what I thought too. Well then now I’m really stumped. Hmmm
I cant wait to know your wildcard :) I have been a secret reader of your blogs and I have to say I seeeee me in you a LOT. :)
I resolve to chirp in here instead of being a silent reader/lurker!
Thank you for all that you do….
heh thank you!
I’m guessing the wild card is an OSG baby too! Or perhaps a big career move?
Not that I know of :)
no big career move? that was my first guess. an exciting trip perhaps? that could push you out of your confort zone…
I joined a boot camp! I’ve been thinking about it for a couple of years and finally took the plunge last week. It’s really out of my comfort zone, but I’m committed for 10 weeks so I’m making the most of it! :-)
Goodluck!! I bet you will feel so proud at the end of it.
Sounds like some great goals! I like setting goals to get in perspective and set myself up for success in the new year and throughout the year. I don’t believe you could get rejected either!! I’m a taurus as well and find myself trying to stay within my comfort zone. so true! I am working on getting more confident in bike racing because my mind can get the best of me for sure :)
We have the same goal for 2012! I want to be fearless and step out of my comfort zone! I started my own business last year and I know that if I don’t get out there and away from my computer I won’t get anywhere! I ended up joining a business program where I have to submit a monthly report so this will definitely get my butt in gear and face those fears of mine, I’m such an introvert!
You are def. rocking the fearless thing Therese! We need to get together soon!
Great list! I need to play around with Foodgawker and Tastespotting more. I love seeing what everyone else posts on those sites.
Thanks for sharing your goals this year. I always like to read others because sometimes I find there are things I forgot to add to my list! :) ex: Keeping a positive mindset and organization.
The wild card thing is killing me! Dont make us wait much longer! One of my goals is to try to find more vegan restaurants around. I just found out about the Kind resaurant in Burlington. Have u tried it?
Yes I did try it just after they opened a while back. I’ve been meaning to try it again because my first experience was just ok, but Ive heard great things about it!
is that where you went with Ashley? im such a stalkerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! :D
And the Naked Sprout in Burlington…try it, too! I loved their nachos!
http://thenakedsprout.com/
Ive been meaning to try it out! Im down for nachos :)
I absolutely ADORE mint.com! We find it really useful to track spending (especially on groceries), and it’s awesome to see our net worth slowly going up.
We have all of our bank accounts, credit cards, mortgage, pension, RSPs, TFSAs…super useful you will love it :)
Glad to hear that :)
Sounds like 2012 will be very productive for you ! I could just follow your goals as my own.lol…A Glow Baby, thats it right ?? May 2012 be the year of many blessings for you :)
That isn’t the wild card, but who knows what the future holds! Happy 2012 to you as well.
If you need an idea for #4 Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 is great! Found it at Costco. I’m working on my push-ups right now with that video. Still have a long way to go. Join me!
oh ive been wondering about that one, thanks for the tip :)
Submitting to the food sites is quite a timesuck some days! If I submit to FG, TS, and another 3 or 4 more, and each site I submit 2 photos…yeah, I need an assistant just to help me with my recipe submissions. Lol :)
Positive mindset is key! One of my goals for 2012 (and just in general the older I get) is to surround myself with positive people and positive energy. If a person is a drain, negative, toxic or a situation is that way…I pull back and try to distance myself from it or them.
Thanks for being so open with your goals. Can’t wait to hear about the wild card!
I didn’t know that craving routine was a Taurus quality. I am also a Taurus and such a creature of habit and thrive on routine.
Word
horoscopes are silly…don’t put too much faith in them, they might hold you back!
I think I might have been a Taurus in a past life too because I totally crave routine!! Your goals for 2012 are awesome Ange, and I think we’re going to have plenty to talk about this weekend!! I just started submitting to Foodgawker and am definitely not getting my hopes up because my photography is nowhere near as gorgeous as yours…. but maybe one day! :)
I will either A.) look for a new job or B.) become a full time artist/writer . . . . . though option B might be a little too much. I need to pay my bills somehow and I haven’t had a steady income from my artwork :(
Hmmm, my wildcard guess is that you are pregnant and so good at keeping a secret that you’re going to have a baby any day now! Then you can run that April 5k! Or not… LOL
I think your overall goal theme is great –it really is easy to stay where we’re most comfortable. Thanks for sharing.
you are funny JL!!
