On Friday, I posted this little teaser on my OSG Facebook wall…
I wrote, “Starting the long weekend off right!”
Chocolate Chip Cookies & almond milk > Beer
Then you begged and pleaded for the recipe and I left you in agony for 6 days while I was busy dipping these cookies in almond milk and slathering crusty, day-old bread with roasted tomato pesto.
I don’t consider myself to be a mean person, but after reading that I guess I am pretty twisted and cruel!
May I repay you in cookies, perhaps?
Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies
Yield
12-14 large cookies

Total time
Ingredients
- 7 tbsp vegan butter + 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (or 1/2 cup vegan butter)
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup cane sugar (or use white)
- 1 flax egg: (1 tbsp ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tbsp water)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, mix together the flax egg and set aside.
- With an electric mixer or in a stand mixer, beat the Earth Balance until fluffy. Add the brown sugar and cane sugar and beat for 1-2 minutes until creamy. Beat in the flax egg.
- Beat in the remaining ingredients and fold in the chocolate chips.
- Shape balls of dough and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes (or up to 14 mins on a Silpat mat). Allow to cool for 5 mins. on the baking sheet and then transfer to a cooling rack for another 10 minutes.
Tip:
- For a crispier cookie edge, use 7 tbsp Earth Balance and 1 tbsp olive oil. I preferred cooking them this way. They also spread out a bit more. Alternatively, for a softer cookie, use 1/2 cup Earth Balance and no oil.
- To retain the crispy factor of the cookies place them in the freezer after cooling in a container or baggie. It was the only method I tried that kept the crispiness of the cookies! Simply thaw on the countertop.
The dough tasted so amazing I almost considered not baking the cookies!
These are definitely the best vegan chocolate chip cookies I’ve made on the blog. They are chewy with a lightly crisped outer crust and they are quick to throw together.
As I typed this post Eric leaned over my shoulder and said, “First, you torture your friends on Facebook and now you torture me because we have none left!”
And then he looked at this picture below and said, “Whoa, creeper hand.”
You see what I have to deal with? ;)
Have a great Wednesday Thursday!
Made this last weekend and they were delicious! They taste so amazing, you would’t guess they are vegan.
Thanks Amanda!
Hi,
In your post you say to use white sugar.
Many times sugar products are NOT vegan.
http://www.veganproducts.org/sugar.html
The problem with white sugar is they sometimes use BONE CHAR from COWS (gross!) in the refining process. (on top of it probably being GMO, full of pesticides, herbicides, and a highly addictive cocaine like substance ::insert strange trying to laugh at something that is not really funny giggle here::
I have been researching lately about sugars and maple syrups. Unfortunately both are scarier than previously thought. Be informed about the brands you choose for both sweeteners. At least with sugar you can say it is vegan if it isn’t white.
My husband forbid me from researching about diet related stuff awhile back. I think I am remembering why… sigh.
Hey Rachel, I’m aware of this and and only use organic cane sugar.
This might be a dumb question, but are dark chocolate chips vegan?
These are now bookmarked under my recipes tab with the label “BEST chocolate chip cookie recipe.” They were that awesome.
As always, so much gratitude for your brilliance!! :)
Can’t wait to try this out. Thanks for your great vegan recipes!
these are amazing… seriously. i also appreciate that it doesn’t make a million of them !! Just enough :)
i’ve been a lurker for a while — recently decided to put it all out there and these cookies are my first post !! pop in if you get a chance!!!

Bookmarking!! I’m doing another “vegan challenge” soon, so these will be perfect. I like to share that not all vegan food is “weird.”
My mom made these cookies for our girls weekend on the coast and the cookies were so great! She didn’t have vanilla, so she used orange extract…and they were really quite good!
I made these today and substituted applesauce for the earth balance because I can’t seem to find it at my local grocery stores. SO yummy!!! Thanks for sharing:)
Ok I JUST put these in the oven, but it’s hard to even get that far when the batter tastes so good. My only complaint is that this recipe should make a million cookies…no exaggeration. I’m at least doubling this recipe next time I make it – my husband eats too fast for me to get to save any of these!!! :D
Dreena Burton’s chocolate chip cookies are my favorite. I make them all the time and the blackstrap molasses really add a nice buttery taste! Also gives it a kick of iron which, I love. These are some delicious looking cookies by the way :)
These are really THE BEST cookies. I’m making them for my scared-of-veganism coworkers and not telling them anything, and I bet they will eat them alllll and yearn for more and I will tell them to become vegan, because that’s where the best cookies are :D Thank you so much Angela! :D
:) GLad you enjoy the cookies Emily!
I have a problem…I could bake these EVERYday. Seriously. I actually technically DO bake them everyday (if you count yesterday and today ;)). A funny thing is in my nutrition class at U of G, we were talking about foods to avoid while pregnant, and raw cookie dough was on there. I wanted to shout out, “not vegan cookie dough!” But refrained. Love them so, so much!
how crucial is the wheat pastry flour? Could I use regular flour? Not even sure where to find that…
Yes I think all purpose flour should work
I’m making my third batch of cookies since Sunday, this time a double batch to bring to some friends (and some to save for me!) These are the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had, and I’m so happy they’re vegan.
I did notice the were a little on the oily side for me the first time I made them, so I replaced two tablespoons of the EB with applesauce, and they were divine! The applesauce also acts as a binder, so the cookies aren’t as flat, but still spread out.
Oh that’s good to know, I will have to try them that way!
I can’t stop making these!!! I follow the recipe exactly, but for some reason mine don’t get thin. I thought maybe my baking soda was bad, but I used a new box and they still stay very compact. I also add the olive oil. Any ideas?
Mine don’t either, and I can’t figure it out :/ I love cookies when they’re flat & crispy. I pretty much followed this recipe to a T, except used regular whole wheat flour and silpat mats.
When I’ve researched how to get cookies to turn out flat and crispy, everything said to use a lottt of butter, which I’d rather avoid! I like to keep em healthy as a cookie can be.
I just made these. i didnt have flax seed, so i used 1tbl flax oil with 3 tbl water and 1/2 tbl chia seed. also i left out the molasses because i didnt have any. they came out great, i can only imagine how good they will be when i use the extra ingredients that i left out. thanks :)
I made these last night for my non-vegan husband who despairs at my constant less-than-successful attempts to make fancy vegan cookies. So I decided to get back to basics…two thumbs way up! These are delicious and easy and he ate half the batch before they were cooled :-)
Hi! Cute blog!
I just wanted to say that these are the best vegan chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever made. So simple too! Thank you!
So glad to hear that!
I’m running to my kitchen right now to make them! Just finished making the homemade strawberry jam oat bars ! My house smells so good I could eat it!! Can’t wait to make these! :) I’ve been looking for a quick, easy vegan cookie for a while too, perfect timing!
Where do you find the dark chocolate chips that don’t have milk products in it?! I have looked everywhere! I’m just dying to try this !!
Look in the natural food section of your grocery store, that’s where I’ve had most luck. I just check the label as make sure there is no actual dairy in it. Many dark chips that are organic are also vegan. Sometimes you can even find them in the bulk bins too. Goodluck!
