I was ready to re-live my half marathon experience on Thursday with my first run since the race!!
Unfortunately, my legs said otherwise!
Here I was thinking that 3 complete days of rest was more than enough. My legs told me otherwise, especially after mile 3.
The run:
- 4 miles
- Duration: 38 mins
- Avg pace: 9:30 min/mile
- Max pace: 8:09 min/mile
When I got home I was stiff, stiff stiff and my legs were very sore. Immediately into an Epsom Salt bath I went. Ommmm.
For those of you who run races, what does your post-race plan usually look like?
The reason I have not committed to the Toronto Half Marathon on Oct 18th is because I am waiting to see how my body bounces back from the half on Sunday. I hope to have my decision by early next week.

Race Pictures!
To download the digital picture file they want $60 bucks! :(
I hate how they try to capitalize on runners who just want a photo of all their hard work! I mean $60 bucks for a digital file? That isn’t even for a print!
I’m in the black tank/white cap:
All I remember thinking was, ‘Sweet, I finally don’t have to run anymore. Walking hurts, walking hurts. Must pee.’

Sketchie covers his eyes when he sleeps. He needs a sleep mask!
Sketchie = 0, Cat bed = 54
He now sleeps in his cat bed everyday from about 12-7pm. lol. And again from 8-10pm. And again from 10-midnight. ;)
I also love when he curls his toes…
He sleeps with one eye open…
Sketchie also has crazy dreams. The other day I caught him whimpering and smacking his lips pretending to eat! I fed him an extra scoop of food that day. ;)
What cute things do your pets do when they sleep?

I’m off to sort out this Canada Post issue. Hopefully this is the last call I will have to make to them! I know the tech support by name now…I’m not even joking!

i just did a 22km run on saturday, i got a muscle massage on sunday which i think helped a ton because i was able to resume my usual cross training on monday as usual.
although with running specifically, its recommended you take a day off for each mile you do, so about two weeks, NO LONG RUNS, and no running at all for a week. Crosstraining for the next few weeks is the way to go, so you still get all the circulation to the healing muscles
i read that even though you may feel better, taking a week off allows all the internal healing to happen, and in general just listen to you body like you did, if you feel sore or pain back off. everyone’s recovery is different.
also keeping a log of your recovery process. two days after i wrote everything i did to see what works and what doesn’t so i know for my next race.
:)
Great advice!
Oh my goodness – Sketchie is so cute!
Our dog Blue will “make her bed” every night before going to sleep… she has this fleece blanket and a couple pillows on the ground, and she’ll paw at them and nudge the corner this way or that with her nose… sometimes if she’s really tired she kind of groans and moans while doing it. Just like a person, it’s hilarious to watch!
My cat has been into sleeping on his back lately… toes up in the air, Sketchie-style… haha

I knew a dog that used to pull his cover over him- just like a person!!! It was the cutest thing ever.
Your cat is so cute! Is he/she(?) a special breed?
Bengal :)
Awwww I LOVE these kitty pictures!! I’m such a cat person (not the hoarding 20 cats in one house kinda haha) but I think everything my kitten does is the cutest thing ever. She tries to defy gravity alot and jump to the highest points in the house that she can find which is so entertaining to watch… she’s reached the tops of our highest bookcases, our china cabinet, and just about everything else. Sketchie is Adoooorable!!!!! :)
LOL @ defy gravity!!!
Sketchie climbs the bookcase in our office.
Maybe you just went out too fast? That seems like a pretty speedy run for three days later.
When I ran my half I was actually surprised that I was able to bounce back into running and had a decent run three days later. That said, my body was tired of training so I took some time off. It was almost more of a mental fatigue then physical. I felt less like running then usual.
Yea I def. think I was running too fast in retrospect!
Our dogs both move their paws as if they are running in their sleep and my fiance’s dog, Peanut, will bark in her sleep! We always joke that they’re chasing bunnies ;)
Oh man… I am so obsessed with Sketchie!!!! SO freakin cute.
In other news, I FINALLY started a new blog!! Go see :)
Omg I love Sketchie!
I always have a problem with having to pee during a race! It is the worst!
Sketchy is too cute! I just wanna hug him!
Hi Angela! i”m glad you enjoyed my smoothie recipe, thanks for posting it on the website…i just started school again, the first hetic week, and have been slacking on my smoothie making, seeing it on the website this morning was just the push i needed!!!
Also congratulations on your race!
It was delicious! Thanks for sharing :)
My puppy gets nightmares. It’s cute when she’s having happy dreams and her tail is wagging, but most of the time, she wimpers and shakes around until we wake her up (“it’s ok baby, it’s ok”). We think something traumatic happened to her before we adopted her, so that’s why it’s so sad when she gets bad dreams…once in awhile would be one thing but it happens a lot.
That is impressive you ran 4 miles after that race, I would probably give yourself at least a week off from running, maybe try to do other things to get your workout in that don’t use your joints as much (biking, walking, pilates, weights). You don’t want to injure yourself and not be able to run for a LONG time…that would be the worst, huh?
Your cat is way cute though, and I love my dog because when he is tired he will lie there and rub his paw over his nose, like it is itching…very cute!
Sketchie is so cute, and I hate cats!! I’ve never been a cat person. My dog Sugar is hilarious she rolls herself in her blanket so she’s absolutely in the dark. She makes her bed all nice and comfortable for her. It’s actually pretty hi;arious to watch. Have a good weekend!
60 bucks? Ouch.
Sketchy’s really cute! My best friend has a kitty and today I took some reaaaally cute pictures of him. I may post them later :)
The first run after a long run is going to be tough. For a half-marathon I take two days off then do a few days of short (3-4 miles) runs then I’m usually fine to get back to my usual base mileage. For a marathon I take 2 or 3 days off, do some short runs and then do my taper week schedule.
The more long runs you do, the more you will get used to it and your body will recover more quickly.
LOL “must pee”. Sounds about right ;-)
Don’t worry – you’ll run soon enough. Don’t push it! After my full marathon, I waited about 4-5 days to run and it was TOUGH!! But then I pushed through calf pain and increased my mileage WAY to fast and have a permanently sore calf because of it. Never went away – even with PT! After my half, I just went with how I was feeling. You’ll get your running groove back again!
Awww! You actually have the cutest cat ever. Apart from mine of course ;) Haha I like your train of thought when you finished the race “walking hurts, must pee” :) Prioritizing right there!
I’m not a cat fan, but if I had a Sketchie I just might be. He’s the most hilarious cat I’ve seen. So much personality. He makes me giggle.
How did he get that name? :D
Why do so many people dislike cats? Cats are awesome!!! Sketchie is beautiful and full of personality.
My cat is so cute and everything she does makes me smile. She has a super long tongue and half the time it sticks out of her mouth. She’ll look at me, like “What?” with her tongue out like a bulldog.
Cats are the best! When my cat sleeps, she tends to get so relaxed that her tongue sticks out. Just the tip of it, but she is dark gray, so its super cute to see a bright pink tongue sticking out of her mouth and she has no idea!! It makes me laugh out loud every time. Sometimes I’ll mess with her and touch it (it’s always so warm).
Post runs typically involve either an epsom salt bath, lots of running yoga poses, core strengthening and/or leg exercises, and if I’m lucky, a shoulder and neck massage!! :) Not always lucky, though! ;)
