Running After The Half Marathon

October 2, 2009

I was ready to re-live my half marathon experience on Thursday with my first run since the race!!

IMG_6620

Unfortunately, my legs said otherwise!

Here I was thinking that 3 complete days of rest was more than enough. My legs told me otherwise, especially after mile 3.

The run:

  • 4 miles
  • Duration: 38 mins
  • Avg pace: 9:30 min/mile
  • Max pace: 8:09 min/mile

When I got home I was stiff, stiff stiff and my legs were very sore. Immediately into an Epsom Salt bath I went. Ommmm.

For those of you who run races, what does your post-race plan usually look like?

The reason I have not committed to the Toronto Half Marathon on Oct 18th is because I am waiting to see how my body bounces back from the half on Sunday. I hope to have my decision by early next week.

Race Pictures!

To download the digital picture file they want $60 bucks! :(

I hate how they try to capitalize on runners who just want a photo of all their hard work! I mean $60 bucks for a digital file? That isn’t even for a print!

I’m in the black tank/white cap:

All I remember thinking was, ‘Sweet, I finally don’t have to run anymore. Walking hurts, walking hurts. Must pee.’

Sketchie covers his eyes when he sleeps. He needs a sleep mask!

Sketchie = 0, Cat bed = 54

IMG_6579

He now sleeps in his cat bed everyday from about 12-7pm. lol. And again from 8-10pm. And again from 10-midnight. ;)

IMG_6581

I also love when he curls his toes…

IMG_4879

He sleeps with one eye open…

IMG_4896

Sketchie also has crazy dreams. The other day I caught him whimpering and smacking his lips pretending to eat! I fed him an extra scoop of food that day. ;)

What cute things do your pets do when they sleep?

I’m off to sort out this Canada Post issue. Hopefully this is the last call I will have to make to them! I know the tech support by name now…I’m not even joking!

awwwwwww Sketchie is so cute Angela! I wish I were not so allergic to cats sometimes :(

You are right to hang back a little before signing up for that marathon I think :) Would not be good going into it sore and possibly injuring yourself!
Have a great day!

Awww Sketchie is soo cute.. I think he is the only cat I like… jkjk but I am defiently a dog person.. I usually wait a week after a race.. I will do walking and eliptical training during the week to losen up my legs a little bit during the week.

My post-half training plan usually looks a lot like this:
No running, no running, no running, ok run-ouch it hurts, no running, ok run- ooh still hurts a bit but less than before, no running, man I’m slow, no running, ok now I feel like I can run again.

It takes me a few weeks to get back to wanting to work hard and to being able to work hard. I still do yoga and weights and a little bit of cross training in the mean time, but it takes a bit to get my running groove back.

Good luck with your decision!

I took a week off after my half marathon and then another week, and then another… It was so hard to get back into running with taking so much time off and it was like I had to start completely over. I would recommend not taking TOO much time off :)

Boomer yips and runs in her sleep. The yips are so cute because it sounds like she’s a little puppy but she’s a 10 year old lady :)

Sketchie is so cute! I love watching my pets sleep — they are adorable! My dog has nightmares a lot and always cries and moves her little paws as if she is running. Having pets makes life so much better!

I find regular light exercise is good after long runs/races. By light exercise, I mean run/walk for about 30 minutes each day for a week. The goal is to keep your legs limber, but to give them a break. And check to see how your sneakers are holding up, too!

Our family dog used to sometimes yip in his sleep. We put him down at age 17 a month ago. My mom promptly donated all of our “dog” possessions. . . it would have been hard to have looked at that empty bed each day, and it’s nice to think of another dog getting use out of the bed, bowls, etc.

That is a really good idea to donate those items!

I just want to kiss Sketchies whole face!

As for my post race plan… usually it takes me a good month to get out running again. Training is so time consuming. I do most of my training in a group setting with the Running Room, and it sucks up Tues – Wed evenings and every Sunday morning. I love having a little personal time again!!

What kind of Breed is Sketchy? I am looking to get a pet, and think right now a cat would suit my lifestyle best, even though I am very much a dog person! HAHA But I just love the looks of Sketchy! Oh, and where did you get him? I also live in Ontario:)

He’s a Bengal. I suggest doing your research on them because they are VERY time demanding and not like typical cats. ;)

I loooove it when Pokey makes cute little noises while he is sleeping. He also makes the cutest faces when I’m trying to take pictures of him, like he is trying to say, “Why are you doing this? Please stop! You are annoying.” Of course, I never do, because I am his personal paparazzi :D

My father is a former marathoner and he explained that for every mile you run you should rest/take it easy. So for half marathon you should take it easy for 13 days.

One theory is that after a hard race in which you gave it your all – you need one day of rest (active or not) for each mile you ran. I used this after both my half-marathons and all the 10Ks I’ve run and found it to be pretty true. I do some light jogging (10-11 minute miles but for someone else the pace would be different) which I consider active rest. I’ll also do some light swimming, hiking (I HATE walking on treadmills), aerobics or biking. I don’t find that I need 3 days after a 5K though to continue hard training. I was looking for a link to give you the background, but I couldn’t find it right away. However, this is why long distance track athletes do not compete in every meet while sprinters can.

Great info!
The race actually sent us all an email with that exact suggestion regarding rest for each mile. I didn’t know it included active rest though. Good tip!

My cousin did a half last year… she felt amazing the day of the half, and the following day. Two days later delayed-onset soreness set in and she was super sore for quite a few days. So if you ran on Sunday, it might be that your soreness peaked Tuesday/Wednesday, which means you would still be feeling it by your Thursday run. I’d suggest a short (1 mile?) walk today just to stretch out your muscles but not put ANY strain on it, and see how you feel by the weekend.
Love love love Sketchie. One of my kitties snores in her sleep. And she loves to sleep under a tent blanket. No joke- I make her one every evening on the couch (a blanket across a few pillows) and she stays in there all evening! LOL!

Sketchie loves the tent blankets too :)

Yup you are right about the delayed soreness. My peak was Tuesday. Just going to take it slow for now and rest up

After my triathlon Sunday I took Monday and Tuesday off and went to the gym Wednesday and Thursday for some cross/strength training. I could tell I still felt sore and a little off, but felt good to move those muscles around!

My golden retriever sleeps with his eyes open…FREAKY! And my little border collie mix runs in her sleep..must be herding up some cows in her dreams!!! HA!
