I’m sure many of you are familiar with spiralizer machines – famous for turning vegetables like zucchini into spiraled, curly, pasta-like strands. I first had zucchini “pasta” a few years ago at a raw food restaurant and I couldn’t get over how similar it was to regular pasta noodles. A spiralizer machine has always been in the back of my mind since then!
I found myself at Kitchen Stuff Plus last week and asked a sales person if they sold spiralizer machines.
“No, I’m sorry we don’t, but we do sell julienne peelers.”
Julienne peeler?? My ears perked up.
How did I not know about this amazing invention? I immediately bought both brands of julienne peelers they carried – you know, just in case one was a dud. And one of them WAS a dud, but the other – Zyliss brand – worked fantastically. I was literally yelling, “Yay it worked!!!” to Sketchie who was trying his best to ignore me in his Sketchie Shell (formerly known as the “cat tent”).
Meet my new Zyliss Julienne Peeler:
UPDATE: I now use this julienne peeler by Kuhn Rikon.
As soon as I got home I made a huge bowl of pasta-like veggies using a green zucchini, yellow zucchini, and a large carrot.
To make it, grab zucchini or carrots and peel away like you would a normal peeler. There is no need to cook the vegetables beforehand, but feel free to heat the veggie “noodles” up in a skillet very briefly just before serving. Sometimes I eat it cold and other times warm, it just depends on my mood.
I was quite impressed with how thin it cut the strands! It gets trickier to peel as you get close to the bottom, so I usually chop up the remaining piece and either throw it in or save it for a stir fry later on.
I’m sure using julienne peelers for this purpose is old news to many of you, but it’s new, exciting news to me. Don’t you love when you find out a cool trick?
Naturally, I’ve been julienning/spiralizing my little heart out. So far I’ve tried zucchini and carrots, but I’m wondering if it works on other veggies or fruit. I’m sure beets would work, although it would be messy. I’m pretty sure it will work on potatoes too. Butternut squash? Let me know below if you have any ideas and I will be sure to try it out.
The first thing I made was a mix of green & yellow zucchini, and carrot “pasta” topped with my 15-Minute Creamy Avocado Pasta sauce. It was lovely!
Avocado pasta sauce tip – if you are looking to cut down the oil, sometimes I sub half the oil (1 tbsp) for 1 tbsp water and it’s never missed.
For some protein, I added tofu on the side. Easy, fun to eat, refreshing, and perfect for a hot summer day.
Another fun meal I made is this yellow zucchini pasta dish with White Linen Collection Marinara Sauce, hummus, a crumbled veggie burger, basil, and Herbamare.
Promptly INHALED!
If you are interested in a cheap way to “julienne/spiralize” zucchini, carrots, etc – I highly recommend trying out a julienne peeler. It only takes a few minutes, the clean up is minimal, and if you’re like me, you’ll find yourself upping your veggie intake substantially.
My daughter introduced me to the julienne peeler last week when i visited. I have just purchased one it not tried it yet. Looking forward to the experience. I am still considering a spirilizer but confused as to which is best. Would love to hear from those who “love” theirs. Thanks
The Zyliss people should give you some money cause I just bought it too!
Hi I LOVE YOUR BLOG ,
I am vegetarian/vegan almost all my life and I too have a major love for animals
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing wonderful helpful creative blog
Thanks too for the tip about using no spiralizer especially if you are poor and broke such as myself lol
G*d bless
Feel free to email and chat about anything/everything
I bought the orange branded one after reading this recommendation and its excellent. So glad I didn’t get a spiralizer and really helpful to be able to enjoy “pasta” dishes with others even though I eat paleo. Thanks for the review!
My favorite Italian restaurant makes any pasta with the veggie noodles as an alternate to regular pasta & I love it! Today I went to the Internet to find out how to make the veggie noodles & viola! Your website was the first to appear! Thank u! The tutorial was perfect! I made a veggie marinara with it tonight & even my carb-loving hubby agreed that this will go into our monthly meal rotation. Reading the reviews someone mentioned using the julienner for spring rolls- oh the time this will save me with the carrots & cucumbers!
HI
took your advice.Dumped idea of expensive spiralizer bought Zyliss.Fantastic product came today. Will out buying lots more veg to have a go with tomm.
Thanks again.
Was it the OXO Good Grips Julienne Peeler that you tried and didn’t like? I was just wondering because that is the not me our grocery store had.
Hey Lisa, I don’t recall the brand for sure, but I don’t think it was by OXO. Hope you find one you like!
Thanks for this! Was wanting to buy a machine but I’ve been banned from more gadgets. This was pass under the radar!
I found your site via a friend and I love it! One thing? If ever you can, you should think about putting metric measurements out there… a large market in Europe for this kind of site.
Keep up the good work :)
Thanks for your suggestion Gillian, I would love to provide metric too! I guess I need to just take the plunge.
I’ve been doing this for years with th shred blade on a Cuisinart Food processor–it takes 1 minute. I do find shredding vegetables helpful in eating healthily.
Oh my goodness, thank you for this! I used a coupon at a homegoods store to pick up a set: Titan brand stainless steel peeler tool and garnish tool. They both work great. The garnisher is PERFECT, oh my gosh! I’m sitting here with a big bowl of zucchini and carrots with that AMAZING avocado sauce on it. You’re my hero right now.
I’m in LOVE with this peeler. I read this post a couple of weeks ago and after a little debate, ordered this exact tool from amazon. I mean come on, I could totally spare $8.54. It arrived this afternoon and during my entire yoga class this evening all I could think about was making a zucchini and carrot dinner. I whipped up a quick spinach, cilantro, lemon juice, garlic, and avocado pesto to toss the peeled veggies in and sliced up half a tomato to put on top. Then I sat on my porch eating my delicious raw dinner! Thanks for giving a great new idea to this teen vegan :)
I looked at the reviews of this particular item and it was not good . Perhaps they got defectives ones?
Hi! Thanks for sharing! Could you post the recipe for the White Linen Collection Marinara Sauce, hummus, a crumbled veggie burger, basil, and Herbamare you shared the delicous photo of?
where did you get this peeler from?
Thank you for this! I was looking at a spiraliser but this is a far better solution for my little kitchen and to give vegetable noodles a try first!
a great source for inexpensive, organic tomato sauces is Trader Joe’s.
one of my favorites is the organic tomato with mushrooms.
We just bought a peeler today. The best rig for sure.Gonna be using that alot as we have been on the clean eating path and are cutting out bread and pasta.worked great for zuccini and carrots.
I saw this and got myself a peeler. One night coming home late from work, I remembered I had zucchini in fridge that needed to be dealt with and I remembered this! I had frozen avocado halves in freezer and promptly took out 2 halves to allow thaw time while peeling my “pasta”! Once the zucchini was done I threw it in a bowl. I mashed and minced 3 garlic cloves (I love garlic) with a pinch of salt and then in a separate bowl I got the avocado flesh out and mashed with fork. Added to this the garlic, a tablespoon or so of Veganize mayo to make a thick sauce, sea salt and pepper. Dumped on top of “pasta”, mixed and OMG!! So good I made it the next too! :) Thank you!
I was just about to purchase a spiralizer when I read your web page.
I have found out that my Kenwood mixer has a blade that does Julian strips.
I have never used it before. You have, therefore, saved even more money.
Thanks for your excellent idea.
Randomly came across this entry when I was looking at your GF recipes :) I bought a Zyliss yesterday after reading this, but mine broke straight away (on a carrot). Just wondering if yours is sensitive to breaking? The plastic didn’t break, but the blade kept falling out, if that makes sense? Thanks x
Oh no! Sounds like a defect. I would try to email the company and ask for a refund or exchange.
