I’m sure many of you are familiar with spiralizer machines – famous for turning vegetables like zucchini into spiraled, curly, pasta-like strands. I first had zucchini “pasta” a few years ago at a raw food restaurant and I couldn’t get over how similar it was to regular pasta noodles. A spiralizer machine has always been in the back of my mind since then!
I found myself at Kitchen Stuff Plus last week and asked a sales person if they sold spiralizer machines.
“No, I’m sorry we don’t, but we do sell julienne peelers.”
Julienne peeler?? My ears perked up.
How did I not know about this amazing invention? I immediately bought both brands of julienne peelers they carried – you know, just in case one was a dud. And one of them WAS a dud, but the other – Zyliss brand – worked fantastically. I was literally yelling, “Yay it worked!!!” to Sketchie who was trying his best to ignore me in his Sketchie Shell (formerly known as the “cat tent”).
Meet my new Zyliss Julienne Peeler:
UPDATE: I now use this julienne peeler by Kuhn Rikon.
As soon as I got home I made a huge bowl of pasta-like veggies using a green zucchini, yellow zucchini, and a large carrot.
To make it, grab zucchini or carrots and peel away like you would a normal peeler. There is no need to cook the vegetables beforehand, but feel free to heat the veggie “noodles” up in a skillet very briefly just before serving. Sometimes I eat it cold and other times warm, it just depends on my mood.
I was quite impressed with how thin it cut the strands! It gets trickier to peel as you get close to the bottom, so I usually chop up the remaining piece and either throw it in or save it for a stir fry later on.
I’m sure using julienne peelers for this purpose is old news to many of you, but it’s new, exciting news to me. Don’t you love when you find out a cool trick?
Naturally, I’ve been julienning/spiralizing my little heart out. So far I’ve tried zucchini and carrots, but I’m wondering if it works on other veggies or fruit. I’m sure beets would work, although it would be messy. I’m pretty sure it will work on potatoes too. Butternut squash? Let me know below if you have any ideas and I will be sure to try it out.
The first thing I made was a mix of green & yellow zucchini, and carrot “pasta” topped with my 15-Minute Creamy Avocado Pasta sauce. It was lovely!
Avocado pasta sauce tip – if you are looking to cut down the oil, sometimes I sub half the oil (1 tbsp) for 1 tbsp water and it’s never missed.
For some protein, I added tofu on the side. Easy, fun to eat, refreshing, and perfect for a hot summer day.
Another fun meal I made is this yellow zucchini pasta dish with White Linen Collection Marinara Sauce, hummus, a crumbled veggie burger, basil, and Herbamare.
Promptly INHALED!
If you are interested in a cheap way to “julienne/spiralize” zucchini, carrots, etc – I highly recommend trying out a julienne peeler. It only takes a few minutes, the clean up is minimal, and if you’re like me, you’ll find yourself upping your veggie intake substantially.
Oh my god I have to find one of these!!! Amazing!!!
I’m going to try to julienne cucumber to make a cucumber salad
That is what I was thinking would be a good use. Cucumber “noodles with yogurt, garlic etc Kind of like a taziki salad.
Oh my gosh! YUM!
I’m going to try to julienne cucumber to make a cucumber salad
I just ordered two off of Amazon for less than $8.00 each and free shipping!
I had found these earlier this year and think I will now order one. amazon.com/Multifunction-Vegetable-Twister-Utensil-Processing/dp/B0099KRUSC
Please read the reviews first. Sounds like a very poor quality item.
I was craving zucchini noodles with marinara sauce yesterday but didn’t want to buy an expensive mandoline so this is super awesome! This is so going on the grocery list for next week, woohoo!
I love this post! I was literally just contemplating purchasing a $35 spiralizer this morning, but then read this and ordered that exact peeler from Amazon! Thanks for saving me valuable kitchen space! I love your blog.
I hope you enjoy it Kimberly!
Yes, I was in the same position Kimberly. Do I want to shell out $40 for another appliance that’s going to take up yet more space in an already crowded kitchen? Love that the julienne peeler is a little guy that’ll do the job & won’t crowd my kitch.
Thanks for sharing Angela!
Me too! I had one saved in my Amazon wish list and was just thinking of taking the plunge. This will be much easier (and smaller as the other ladies noted). Thanks Angela!!
Ha! Looks like Angela caused a frenzy ;) It’s now sold out on Amazon and many other places too! Just found mine on ebay!
Thanks Angela for the amazing tip for all of us who didn’t want to shell out the big bucks or space to the spiralizer! Those pastas look amazing!
Apparently I need one of those. I bought a spiralizer on Amazon and cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it work. And the instructions are in Japanese. #epicfail
hah…I can imagine. Maybe there is a You Tube video on your particular brand?
There is! Search for the Benriner vegetable slicer on YouTube and you will see a demo -)
I have the Japanese one- HATE IT! Bought the Veghetti… Not bad… Then got the Joyce Chen with attached bowl… Like that one.
You are a genius. I need one of these peelers!!
I think I need to get that ASAP. And thanks for posting about because now maybe I’M the very last one to know about this peeler. I was actually in Collingwood yesterday and ate at the raw, vegan place there. Of course, I ordered the vegetable salad which comes with zucchini and carrots spiralized, and it reinforced that I need a spiralizer. Well Angela, you’ve solved that problem (and funny how both occurred so close to each other!). I think it would totally increase my veggie intake too. The hubby might get sick of zucchini though ;)
I just saw one of these the other day but it didn’t occur to me that I could use it to make veggie pasta of all kinds!! It definitely seems like an awesome and delicious way to eat more veggies!
Ok, can I just say how much I love that photo of the mid-peel stage on the yellow zucchini?! LOL, it’s lovely!! I’m glad you found a solution to prevent you from buying yet another kitchen gadget!! :) I love those sort of kitchen epiphanies… and I think I need a cat or dog to share those eureka moments when they happen. Or, I suppose I could just email you! :)
I love this cheap alternative to a spiralizer! I have a ton of zucchinis coming out of the garden and I would love to try this with some of them. There’s a kitchen store right around the corner from my office — I think I’m going to head on over there on my lunchbreak!
PS – isn’t that pasta sauce to die for?? I LOVE it and buy a jar every time I’m at Costco because I literally inhale it the moment it enters my kitchen!!!
Yes it is…I always have a couple jars in my cupboard at all times!
i LOVE my julienne peeler! its amazing. i’ve done it with sweet potato and that is a job and a half, i found it difficult but worth it…i just won’t use sweet potato EVERY time haha…maybe potatoes would be a little easier? who knows. i also do cucumber and carrot and make fresh spring rolls SO YUMMY!
Yea I could see how firm veggies like SP and reg. potatoes could require some elbow grease. I will have to try it soon…
I want a mandoline so bad, but you have me sold on the Julianne peeler. I was at Sur La Table yesterday and may have to run back again today. Thanks for the mouth watering dinner suggestions AND the product review!!!
WHAT! I did not know this existed!!! So exciting! Hello more salads and summer rolls!!
Looks delicious! I recently bought a spiralizer from Cruda Cafe and I’m obsessed. When I’m looking for a quick lunch I just spiralize a zucchini and whip up some pesto, et voila a quick raw meal! I actually posted a recipe for Summer Cilantro Zucchini Pasta today, you should check it out.
So far I have tried zucchini and carrots but I’m looking froward to trying cucumber (in disks), jicama and beets. You could also make asparagus noodles with a regular peeler of a julienne peeler.
Off to the kitchen store! I need this! Both of those dishes look amazing. Perfect for all the wonderful produce that’s out there right now. Yum.
what a great little tool! I’ll have to get one! :)
Thank you for sharing this, I just ordered one and can’t wait to make veggie pasta :)
I need one of these! My tiny kitchen is too full of machines and what-nots too so a julienne peeler looks ideal, I hope they do them in pink…. :) Really want to make the creamy avocado pasta sauce to go with some julienned zucchini’s (courgettes in the UK!)
So once you julienned your veggies into ‘noodles’, do you boil or saute them? Or just eat them raw?
You can eat the zucchini and carrots raw or give them a gentle saute. It’s up to you. Of course some veggies need to be cooked like potatoes and if butternut squash works also, I will saute it until just tender.
Thanks!
Ahhh that is way cool! I’m putting it on my wish list now!
Such a great idea Angela!! I was in dire need of a new way to prepare my typical veggies. I’ll be looking for that peeler when I go to the grocery store this morning!
