How To Spiralize Vegetables (Without A Spiralizer!) + 2 Veggie “Pasta” Dishes

I’m sure many of you are familiar with spiralizer machines – famous for turning vegetables like zucchini into spiraled, curly, pasta-like strands. I first had zucchini “pasta” a few years ago at a raw food restaurant and I couldn’t get over how similar it was to regular pasta noodles. A spiralizer machine has always been in the back of my mind since then!

I found myself at Kitchen Stuff Plus last week and asked a sales person if they sold spiralizer machines.

“No, I’m sorry we don’t, but we do sell julienne peelers.”

Julienne peeler?? My ears perked up.

How did I not know about this amazing invention? I immediately bought both brands of julienne peelers they carried – you know, just in case one was a dud. And one of them WAS a dud, but the other – Zyliss brand – worked fantastically. I was literally yelling, “Yay it worked!!!” to Sketchie who was trying his best to ignore me in his Sketchie Shell (formerly known as the “cat tent”).

Meet my new Zyliss Julienne Peeler:

UPDATE: I now use this julienne peeler by Kuhn Rikon.

As soon as I got home I made a huge bowl of pasta-like veggies using a green zucchini, yellow zucchini, and a large carrot.

To make it, grab zucchini or carrots and peel away like you would a normal peeler. There is no need to cook the vegetables beforehand, but feel free to heat the veggie “noodles” up in a skillet very briefly just before serving. Sometimes I eat it cold and other times warm, it just depends on my mood.

I was quite impressed with how thin it cut the strands! It gets trickier to peel as you get close to the bottom, so I usually chop up the remaining piece and either throw it in or save it for a stir fry later on.

I’m sure using julienne peelers for this purpose is old news to many of you, but it’s new, exciting news to me. Don’t you love when you find out a cool trick?

Naturally, I’ve been julienning/spiralizing my little heart out. So far I’ve tried zucchini and carrots, but I’m wondering if it works on other veggies or fruit. I’m sure beets would work, although it would be messy. I’m pretty sure it will work on potatoes too. Butternut squash? Let me know below if you have any ideas and I will be sure to try it out.

The first thing I made was a mix of green & yellow zucchini, and carrot “pasta” topped with my 15-Minute Creamy Avocado Pasta sauce. It was lovely!

Avocado pasta sauce tip – if you are looking to cut down the oil, sometimes I sub half the oil (1 tbsp) for 1 tbsp water and it’s never missed.

For some protein, I added tofu on the side. Easy, fun to eat, refreshing, and perfect for a hot summer day.

Another fun meal I made is this yellow zucchini pasta dish with White Linen Collection Marinara Sauce, hummus, a crumbled veggie burger, basil, and Herbamare.

Promptly INHALED!

If you are interested in a cheap way to “julienne/spiralize” zucchini, carrots, etc – I highly recommend trying out a julienne peeler. It only takes a few minutes, the clean up is minimal, and if you’re like me, you’ll find yourself upping your veggie intake substantially.

Wow, I had no idea it was so simple to get vegetables into thin little shapes like that! I can’t wait to get a peeler to motivate myself to eat some more vegetables =) The zucchini pasta dish looks positively delightful. Do you have any other recipes to recommend that don’t involve avocado?

I have been wanting to purchase a spiralizer for a year now but just never got around to it. Ran to a local kitchen store and got the Oxo julienne peeler. It works fabulously and is much cheaper I might add! I sauteed some yellow summer squash and zuchinni “noodles” in coconut oil (MN fall weather calls for warm food) then topped it with a spicy peanut sauce I made. SOO delish! Thanks for the fabulous tip!

I bought one of these today after reading this post last night. I was Google searching for spiralizers and your post was included in the outcome. My zucchini and carrots looked pretty fancy pants tonight! My 8 year old didn’t complain about the zucchini in her salad – she worked the peeler magic on it…I think she thought it was cucumber :)

I have been using a similar jullienne peeler for year. Brand name is Kiwi and it is made in Thailand. http://www.amazon.com/Kiwi-Pro-Slice-Peeler/dp/B000L8FZMY
You can find this peeler in many Asian grocery stores for approximately $4-5. In Thailand, the peeler is especially used to grate green (unripe) papaya — an essential ingredient for som tam (raw papaya salad). Som tam is a salad pounded in a mortar and pestle with the following ingredients: green papaya, sliced green beans, cherry tomatoes, peanuts, raw garlic, one or two chili peppers, palm sugar, peanuts, dried shrimps, fish sauce, and lime juice. Som tam can easily be veganized by leaving out the dried shrimps and replacing the fish sauce with a salty soy sauce, a vegan fish sauce, or some plain salt. Absolutely delicious on a hot summer day with Thai sticky rice!

I LOVE MY PEELER.
For a quick salad dish I julienne 2 cucumbers and sprinkle them with almonds and lots and lots of lemon juice.

Don’t know where you are but I’m in Nova Scotia, Canada and wondering if I might buy the
julienne peeler in this area. I have recently gone vegetarian and this sounds like a great way to up my intake of veggies. Thanks for the info and to all the ladies for their comments.Will look for one this weekend.

Hi Greta…I am in Charlottetown…couldn’t find a zyliss in town, but they did have peelers at a couple of the kitchen stores and I bought one…I think it was OXO brand. It worked well. I did see a zyliss on Amazon for about $7 and if you buy over $25 it is free shipping. I didn’t want to wait though…..I am a bit impatient.

Thanks Melissa for the info. on the julienne peeler.I did see one in one of our kitchen supply stores. It too was an oxo. I will go back to get it this week as I couldn’t find a Zyliss. Perhaps an American brand.
I love the idea of making my own vegetable “spaghetti”…….sounds interesting.

I knew about these from a friend, just like you, she made me a raw zuchinni pasta with coconut butter sauce…OMG, and it stayed in the back of my mind….until I read your article and promptly ran out the door to finally buy one of those thingy’s, ran home and made a carrot/zuchinni salad with a cashew butter sauce (in a spinach wrap with tofu) and now I feel like a smug git. I’m going to sew a special pocket in all my clothes so I can carry it everywhere. BTW your posts are very funny. I love your stuff, please hurry up and write that book!!

Do you mind telling which one was the dud? I was notified by a friend that the Spiralizer is at its lowest price on Amazon right now and I’m contemplating getting one, but a julienne peeler would take up so much less room and be even less expensive! Amazon has several peelers, and I even have my mom looking at Walmart for a julienne peeler when she goes later this evening.

Hi Michele, The brand of the dud is “Progressive” – I just bought a spiralizer recently after seeing my friends and I LOVE it…doesn’t take up much room either.

Brilliant! I had a julienne peeler tucked in my utensil drawer waiting for just this opportunity! Thanks for sharing! I updated a favorite Asian Noodle salad and ate the whole thing myself – guilt free :o) I can’t wait to try making noodles out of other vegetables.
