FAQ’s Installment 11
119. Leah asks, “You run water over the HRM strap? Doesn’t that make the strap all wet?”
Good question! The way the Polar HRM strap is made is that it is a plastic/vinyl material. So when I run water over it, it does make it wet but not what I could call soaked. The lady at the sports store told me to do it this way and so I have been doing it ever since. I tell Eric it is the worst part of each day- putting the cold strap across my chest! It’s freezing! Especially because it is so cold in this house when I get up in the mornings. :D I just keep in mind that soon I will be running and very warm. You can also ‘spit’ on the strap monitors in times of need. That always grossed me out, but I know lots of people do that in a pinch.
120. Andrea asks, “Is the Polar HRM the one you would most recommend? What should one spend on a good HRM?”
I actually don’t know too much about the different kinds of HRM out there, so I am by no means an expert! The reason I chose my Polar RS200 was because I wanted something that would measure speed and distance. I have had no problems with it at all and I absolutely love it. My only complaint is that the screen is a bit hard to read at times when I am running. I have heard that the Nike + Ipod running kit is good and the foot pod goes into your shoe and is not as bulky as the Polar foot pod. Hope this helps!
121. Jess asks, “This may be none of my business, but I was confused when I read that Foodbuzz was not compensating you for your new Foodbuzz ad. Did they hit a limit or something?”
I know it can be quite confusing! This is a new FoodBuzz widget called the ‘Foodie Blogroll’. It is simply a way for other food bloggers to get their name out. You have to apply and get approved and then once you do, your blog is added to the ‘most recent 5 blog’ list. I got quite a few new hits to my site that day so it is really worth it!

Are you striving to lose more weight event though you are at a healthy weight?
Have you struggled to maintain a certain weight in the past only to feel miserable?
Are you happy at your current weight?
Are you trying to give up unhealthy behaviours such as disordered eating, obsessing with calories and the scale, negative thought patterns/self defeating attitudes, etc?
Have you recently overcome one of these above? How did you do it?

Food Thoughts: I am relatively happy with my current weight, but am still hoping to lose another 5-8 pounds. Having my blog and being a part of this community has really helped! I’ve lost about 6 pounds since November 1, but I’m just making gradual changes like increasing my running mileage every week and attempting to limit sugar and excess snacking. Hopefully I’ll be to my ideal weight by May 1, even though I don’t even know what that exact number is! I think I’ll know it when I get there…

I’m looking to lose around 5 pounds. I’m 5’6 and 128ish. I really would like to tone my arms which I have never been too happy with too. I would also like to cut out artificial sweeteners and cut down on so many carbs. I seriously overload on them and they make my stomach look really bloated some days.
Eating is such a cycle for me though. I eat really healthy for a week then just crave stuff like pizza and pasta like nobody’s business. I don’t keep myself from eating them but I feel like it overtakes me sometimes. Still working on that!!
I don’t like the videos because i can’t see them on my computer :(
Hi Angela! Although I usually don’t post on your blog I do read often! I am 5’2″ and 112 lbs. I try very hard not to put too much thought into the number on the scale and more into the image I see in the mirror and how I feel about myself. I am not interested in losing any weight but in building muscle and tightening up. If this means I gain weight, fine. If I stay at my current weight great! I think it is very important to take a real “eyes wide open” look at yourself and ask “am I happy with what I see and how I feel?”. I hope all of you answers are YES!!!

im fairly happy at my current weight- now flabbiness might be a problem! i struggle all the time with my body image and self-acceptance.
its not so much the food with me, its looking in the mirror and liking what is there staring back at me.
How does that change? Anyone know? How do you get to the point where you are really loving yourself?
I believe that I am happy at my current weight. I’ve been stabilized after recovering from anorexia for roughly six months now (with the occasionally downs). I do feel very healthy and happy MOST days, so I know that’s a good sign.
Food and exercise are still shaky points for me sometimes, but I’ve come SO far from where I was one year ago. Hopefully 2009 will bring more improvements!

This is an interesting subject and I am kind of in a period now where I have pretty much settled into this weight and I like it. I am not having difficulty maintaining this number within a reasonable window. I think you’re right–that is the best gauge. Interesting post!
I am 5’6 and at my lowest weight I was 117 lbs. I was counting calories and going to sleep hungry pretty much everynight. I stopped counting calories and because of that I kinda gave myself permission to eat anything and now I weigh 130 pounds. I know it is a healthy range for my height but I dont feel comfortable so my goal is to lose about 5-8 pounds. I know around 122 is my happy weight because I got to that weight without even counting or restricting and I was happy then. I just need to stop boredom eating !
I am 5’5′ and 132 lb. I have been 20 lbs heavier and 30 pounds lighter. honestly I liked the way I looked best at the lightest weight but I ha to starve myself to get there. so I am trying to get to a happy medium. I know I have a tendency to under eat and over exercise that I need to be careful of.
I’m trying to gain muscle mass, to get healthier and stronger.

NO! I am NOT striving to lose more weight! I am trying to gain muscle mass and maintain my current weight, however, which means I may go up a few pounds. I don’t have a scale at school, which I am grateful for – I just don’t want to let another number run my life!
At my lowest weight, I was absolutely miserable, looking back on it now. I had no idea then, but I see how sad my life was, a blur of numbers, obsessions, and routines. I made my friends and family worry, and I started developing problems with my knees because I was putting too much strain on them. It was truly awful and I never want to be there again. I’m happy with my current weight now, but like I said, I could gain a few pounds of muscle and probably be even happier!
And as far as unhealthy behaviors, that is what 2009 is for! I am giving up calorie counting for good, and reading blogs like yours make my journey SO MUCH EASIER! Thank you so much, keep up the great work and the videos =)
Thanks for answering my question. Basically you confirmed how I have been feeling about all of it. I feel like I need to stop focusing on that stupid scale. I am going to continue to weigh foods that I tend to overeat but be a little more lax on vegt, fruits & things of that nature & no more calorie counting. My focus will be on learning my hunger cues & uping the exercise. Thanks again !!
Ah I never thought of the strap being ‘water resistant’… I’ve just always used my fingers to put water on the sensors. I suppose either way works! I hate putting the cold strap on my chest too – it’s soo cold.
As far as losing weight.. I would like to lose a little bit, and tone up. I think running is definitely helping with that already.
