It’s okay to give yourself a break.
This is something I’ve been reminded of over and over again since the beginning of the year. In a recent newsletter, I shared my struggles with injury and overtraining and opened up about why I decided to take a big old exercise break starting in January 2018. It felt so wrong to do that at the start of a brand new year, let me tell you! I was so nervous to send that newsletter issue out, but the response was fantastic, and many of you said you’d been going through something similar. It never ceases to amaze me how supportive this community is!
The themes of my year have been self-care, healing, and gentle movement while I work through some ongoing health issues, and so far I’ve been sticking with them. Sometimes I feel guilty that I’m not doing “enough”, as it’s easy to get caught up in fitspo or the latest workout fads on Instagram. It seems like others are always working harder or in better shape. Same goes for career stuff. It’s just too easy to get sucked into that mindset of feeling like there are always 10 things I could fix, or that I’m always 10 steps behind where I “should” be. Hello, rat race! And I’ve realized that buying into that means that I’ll never be happy with where I am. It’s awesome to have goals, but feeling like I’m always behind (especially when I’m trying to make positive changes in other areas in my life) isn’t a relaxing way to live.
A lovely reader named Amanda commented recently, saying, “…part of the reason I’ve always loved your blog is because you’re not a robot who just pumps out recipes…you tell us a bit about what’s going on in your life.” I could’ve cried reading Amanda’s note, as it was just what I needed to hear that day after feeling so much guilt about how the year had gone so far. Sometimes we just need the reminder that we’re allowed to have weeks, months, or years that just feel off, but the bright side is that they make us hungrier for those weeks, months, and years that feel GOOD. It’s the best kind of motivation once you get that wake-up call.
I’ve always been an all-or-nothing type of gal, and it’s something I have to be mindful of all the time…it’s in my nature to go big or go home. It’s not in my nature to approach things in a gentle (sane) manner! I am a Taurean bull, afterall—charging, stubborn, determined to accomplish my goals at almost any cost. But often that cost tends to be my emotional or physical health. I charge ahead with my eyes set on the goal and I’m usually okay with the collateral damage if it’s “just me” that takes a hit. I’m strong and can handle a lot, so for most of my life that’s how things have worked.
Eventually something has to give though…it always does! My health issues this past year (see this post and comments) have been a huge red flag. And for once, I’m listening closely even though I don’t quite understand the root of it yet. I’m taking time for me. I’m trying to heal myself. I’m going to doctors appointments. I’m on a temporary allergy elimination diet (hence the lack of recipes lately!) and I’m getting long overdue tests done. I’m not burning myself out.
The silver lining is that setbacks, whether health or otherwise, do eventually force us to stop and examine everything. I know the other side will hold a deeper appreciation for feeling like myself again. And when I get back into my beloved sweaty workouts (which I actually do love), I’ll strive for more balance and patience rather than seeing how many classes I can cram into one week. I will continue to follow social media accounts that build me up with positive inspiration and avoid the others like the plague. I’ll be okay with where I am and respect the journey rather than feeling like I’m failing.
So yes, it’s okay to give yourself a break.
You don’t always have to be in go-go-go mode.
You don’t have to feel behind everyone else.
Where you are right now is exactly where you are supposed to be—even if it’s uncomfortable.
Well, that’s this week’s reminder for anyone who needs it. :) Sort of a thought dump going on today! I’d love to hear if you’ve ever been through something similar, or maybe you’ve been working through things this year too?
Unrelated but definitely worth mentioning: these rich and fudgy balls are FANTASTIC and we can’t stop making them!!! Haha. I hope you love them too.

This is the ideal snack when your sweet tooth needs something fast, but you also want the staying power of healthy fats and protein! Bursting with hemp hearts, these nut-free chocolate protein balls are nutritional powerhouses filled with protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, magnesium, and more. Just like your favourite little black dress, they can be dressed up or down depending on your mood. I love rolling them in hemp hearts, shredded coconut or cocoa powder. For an extra luxurious energy ball, I simply dip the balls in melted chocolate and then chill them until the coating is firm. Recipe adapted from my Raw Chocolate Truffles in The Oh She Glows Cookbook Bonus Bundle.
Ingredients
For the balls:
- 1 cup (160 g) lightly packed pitted Medjool dates*
- 6 tablespoons (55 g) hemp hearts
- 3 tablespoons (15 g) unsweetened cocoa powder or raw cacao powder
- 2 tablespoons (11 g) shredded unsweetened coconut
- 1 tablespoon (15 mL) virgin coconut oil
- 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 3 tablespoons (30 g) chopped dark chocolate (optional)
- 1 to 3 teaspoons (5 to 15 mL) water, if needed
Topping options:
- Shredded coconut
- Hemp hearts
- Unsweetened cocoa powder or raw cacao powder
- Melted dark chocolate
Directions
- Place the pitted dates in a food processor and process until a ball forms.
- Add the remaining ingredients to the processor (hemp hearts, cocoa/cacao powder, coconut, coconut oil, salt, and chocolate, if using) and process until thoroughly combined and almost smooth. The dough should be sticky and shouldn’t be crumbly when you form a ball. If it’s not sticky enough, add 1 to 3 teaspoons of water a bit at a time, processing after each addition.
- Line a plate with parchment paper. Lightly wetting your hands if needed, shape the dough into balls and place them on the lined plate. Roll each ball into your desired topping(s) until completely coated (if needed, lightly wet the ball before rolling so the toppings stick).
- Freeze the balls for 20 minutes until firm or simply enjoy right away!
- Store the leftovers in the fridge or freezer for a quick burst of energy whenever you need one (seriously, that would be all the time in this house!). The balls will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for a week and in the freezer for 4 to 8 weeks.
Tip:
* If your dates are bone dry, soak them in boiled water for 15 minutes and then drain very well. Use an old towel to press out the excess water. If the “dough” is too sticky to shape, add some shredded coconut and process again.
For a fun twist, try changing up the flavours by adding peppermint or orange extract!

Angela, it’s like you pulled those thoughts out of my subconscious! I am EXACTLY the same. Taurus, too, so I wonder if that’s really a shared quality. I have serious adrenal fatigue that’s manifested itself in hair loss and digestive issues for the last 5 years and yet I still continue doing the HIIT classes, constant busyness and never give myself a break. Even when on holiday I have incredibly active holidays jam-packed with activities because of FOMO and comparing myself to others. It’s exhausting. So I seriously applaud you for recognising these habits/guilts and making the necessary changes to slow down. And thank you so much for being open and vocal about this, we need this to be a serious conversation before everyone becomes chronically burnt out.
I feel like I could’ve written a lot of that myself! Similar for sure. :) I really love your point about needing these convos because it seems to be such a theme in today’s digital/social media age.
Thanks so much for these! I’ve been trying to incorporate more healthy fats and protein into my daily intake, and I think these will fit the bill! Dates aren’t my friend, but I will try with a 50/50 mix of dates and raisins and let you know how that goes. :)
Glad you’re getting a handle on your health. Best wishes to you! I’ve been following you so long (when you still used eggs!) that I feel like a friend. Take care, friend!
Beth I still recognize your comments to this day…that is just SO cool you’ve been following for so long. My 10 year “blogiversary” is coming up this October. I don’t know about you but that blows my mind!! Thanks for following along friend! :)
Hope you enjoy the protein balls if you try them out. I love keeping them in the freezer and enjoying one after dinner. yum
Angela, thank you for this post. It seems this is a conversation a lot of people have with themselves. Taking care of ourselves becomes a source of guilt, frustration and shame. It is sad to have balance the negative talk with our own health. Maybe that is the struggle we all need to be able to grow.
The more I think about it the more I think so! I totally agree with the notion that the greatest growth happens as a result of those challenging times…definitely a silver lining. Thanks for reading :)
Hi Angela, thank you for sharing some of your struggles. Like Amanda, I have always loved your blog so much for the personal connection – you feel like a friend! Your ‘go big or go home’ mentality has always inspired me, I would read your posts and feel inspired to work a little harder (which in my case is a good thing ;) but I totally see the need for balance. As a young mom with a busy job I can so relate to that struggle. Balancing career and motherhood is something that’s on my mind a lot. And why is it so much harder, even today, for women? But you’re right, the struggle has a silver lining and I’m so grateful for the lessons learned and perspectives gained!
Aww thank you Monique, I feel like you are all friends too! :) I love the saying that you can have it all, just not all at once. It helps remind me that I shouldn’t expect everything to be in harmony, but that certain things in life will have “good years” or phases while other ones won’t be in that same phase. Some things will need more attention, while other things will feel easy!
Love that fudgy texture!!! I’ve never used hemp seeds in energy bites before…can’t wait to try :)
oh yea these guys are chocolate explosions…we devoured each batch! ;)
We all go through different seasons in our life. Hope you are able to enjoy this time with your littles and give your body the rest it needs.
This recipe looks divine. Can’t wait to make a batch.. I may roll them in some crushed peanuts for a nutty alternative ?
I love the idea of crushed peanuts. My mom tried crushed cookies and well, doesn’t get much better haha. I love the chocolate covered ones too for a dessert-like treat.
i love your blog not only for thes delicious, never fail recipes, but for your raw honesty. I can relate, as I have been slowing down lately too, with a recurring SI joint injury that is “on” again, and a 20 month old son as motivation to heal myself so I can chase him around on the playground! It is hard, but my body os feeling better. Yoga has been therapeutic to body and mind. But the guilt of not always runnign around at 1000% is the hardest thing for me! Positive energy to you and your healing process! Happy to hear you are caring for yourself…not easy with kids!
yes the guilt…oh that guilt…it’s annoying, eh? I can so relate. I’m glad you are giving yourself time to heal too, even if it’s hard. And thank you so much Carolyn for your kind words…means a lot!
Hey Angela! Random question – have you ever used beans in a smoothie/smoothie bowl? I was using cannellini beans in a dip – and thought they might add creaminess/nutrition to a smoothie? BTW I LOVE your all recipes – you taught me how to cook :) I am forever grateful to you. On my way to make the hemp balls!
Hi Hayley, aww thank you! You know what I haven’t added them to a smoothie yet, but I’ve heard from a couple readers who do this and love it! Maybe I’ll be brave someday and try it..haha. :) I think with the right combo of ingredients it could work. Something I have been doing though is adding steamed + frozen cauliflower in place of ice cubes in some of my smoothies. I love the sneaky veggie and I don’t taste it much at all.
“Where you are right now is exactly where you are supposed to be—even if it’s uncomfortable.”
Thank you for this! I’m still in the early months of motherhood and every day I feel exhausted, bewildered, in love, lonely, unproductive, balanced and hormonal all at the same time. My life has changed so much recently and it’s bizarre to go on social media and see how everyone is just going about their days as if nothing has changed for them. While the journey I’ve been on has felt rocky at times, I’m learning to enjoy the path I’m on and surround myself with similar people!
PS: can’t wait to make these. Nursing hunger is still very real and I need something healthy for my chocolate cravings!
Thanks Jessica :) And I hear you about the ups and downs of motherhood…very real and normal! Surrounding myself with friends who are going through the same thing is something I’m grateful for every day! It makes such a difference. :) Big hugs!
Angela,
I needed to read this today. Thank you. This has been a very difficult year, and the difficulties keep adding up. I’m not taking care of myself (which is beginning to take its toll), stress is high, and I’m a single mom to a sweet 4-year old boy. I have been trying to slow down, lower my expectations (very difficult to do) and live in the moment. I think I need to get back in the kitchen (I haven’t been cooking very much lately) and make these. They’re healthy, right? ;)
Alissa
I’m so sorry to hear you’re having a difficult year Alissa :( I can’t imagine all that you have on your plate, but I’m so glad to hear you are trying to slow down a bit. Sending all the love and strength your way!!!
Thank you so much, Angela, and best wishes to you, too! <3
I’m just catching up with your posts here Angela. I’m sorry to hear about your health issues. They seem to be oddly similar to what I went through after taking two courses of antibiotics for strep. Thinking of you during the health struggles!
Thank you Chelsie! Antibiotics really do a number on the gut (and consequently the entire system!). I hadn’t taken them for over 10 years until earlier this year and wow, I think it wiped me out! Doing all the right things now though so I hope to see progress as the weeks go by! Hope you’re feeling better now. :)
Angela, I have loved your blog from the beginning for so many reasons. I love that you are real and relatable and that you share your struggles. Thank you for always sharing. I know that when I am going through anything in my life – good times, bad times, worries, whatever…I feel better when I share what I am experiencing. Anyway, just hope you know that a TON of readers look up to you for so many reasons. You are inspiration and I commend you for making 2018 all about your mental and physical wellness.
You’re so sweet, Marni, thank you! I really appreciate the kind words. :) And it’s so true about sharing our experiences. The intense anxiety I felt earlier this year prevented me from opening up as much as I wanted to, but I’m so happy to be in a better frame of mind these days.
So appreciative for you being so open. I am currently going through what sounds like a similar time in life. I love all of your recipes and posts and have been following you for about 7 years now. Your cookbooks are my first go to’s when I need a recipe! My daughter that’s 8 will say, “Is this an Oh She Glows recipe.” Definitely a household favorite around here! Thanks so much!!
haha your daughter is a smart girl!! How cute. And 7 years! wow. Where does the time go? Your support is so appreciated Brittany!
I’m also having a “focus on me” year. The past 3 years have been crazy with raising twins, part time study and work. I’ve been stressed and exhausted! I was the opposite with exercise – I neglected exercise since pregnancy so had not worked out for almost 4 years!! I wanted to be one of those fit, pregnant women but I was so sick throughout my pregnancy I had no energy /felt too sick to work out. So I joined a gym this year and try to go 2-3x a week. I also signed up for a 12 month skin treatment plan and got my horrible varicose veins done! I’m feeling really great now that I’m looking after myself again
Oh I’ve been there too with exercise…it definitely works both ways! I’m so happy to hear that you are making changes and feeling better. Our well-being is all to easy to neglect especially as parents and it can be really easy to “get away with” until hitting bottom.
Hi,
This is actually the first time I have read your blog. I have been following for 6 months. Thanks for your post because it really resonated with me. I have been healthily and no issues my whole life. That stopped 40 days ago. I have major digestive issues and in the washroom 4-6 times a day. It was 8-15 times a day prior to antibiotics. I am seeing doctors and tests but it all takes time. Meanwhile I am stuck living with digestive issues and not knowing what to eat. I have come to realize stress plays a role which I did not realize before. Thank you for sharing your story because it helps to know others struggle too with digestive issues and theire is no quick and simple solution. I wish there was. Take good care.
Hey Tanya,
I’m glad to hear this post drew you in for a read! Thank you. You are so right that it takes time. I’m such a person who wants progress immediately so it’s been a real test. I wish you all the best with sorting out your digestive issues! Thanks for reading.
Hi,
First, let me say that I love your blog and cookbooks and I use your recipes all the time. Second, I wanted to pass on two resources I have used in the last few years to move past some health challenges of my own. One is a book called A Mind of Your Own by Dr. Kelly Brogan. (Her website is awesome too – www.kellybroganmd.com). The other is a gut health product called Restore from Dr. Zack Bush – also an American doctor who has moved to a more natural healing approach. Both of these people have numerous resources and videos on their websites. I hope they help you in some way. We need to keep the conversation going about how to heal. We currently live in a disease management model. Imagine a world where the focus was on how to maintain optimal health and thrive. Best of luck Angela.
Hey Kelly, Thank you so much for sharing these two resources! I will look into them for sure. :) “Imagine a world where the focus was on how to maintain optimal health and thrive.” – yes, yes, yes!
And I can’t thank you enough for your support for my cookbooks and recipes…really means the world to me. Thanks again!
Angela, Yes! You are doing exactly what you need to do! This warms my heart and I just want to send you a huge hug! Slowing down and really, I mean REALLY, slowing down and taking care of ourselves is one of the hardest things to do! Like you, I ran myself full speed ahead for years. I thought I was handling it like a rockstar, until I wasn’t. I slowly started having strange symptoms- horrible fatigue, muscle aches, severe shortness of breath, arthritis, weight gain, psoriasis, irregular cycles, etc- but my blood work was normal so I just chocked it up to getting older and I pushed myself harder. Until I finally ran myself into the ground! That was a HUGE turing point, and actually a blessing, in my life. It took me a solid year and a half of sticking to what I knew deep down I had to do -SLOW DOWN and NURTURE my body and soul – but I am now truly healthy and happy both physically and mentally! Much love and many blessings on your journey!
Wow Stephanie! Thank you so much for sharing your story. Isn’t it crazy how much we push ourselves in spite of so many warning signs? I’m so happy that you slowed down and nurtured yourself…and how awesome you were able to heal and feel so much better after all of that. :) I hope to be writing that some day soon!
I understand the taking a break with exercise, I fell about a year and 1/2 ago. It was a stumble on my clogs that caused me to fall hard on the pavement on open flat outstretched hands. I hurt both wrists and ankles. I own a very busy coffee shop that I do all of the baking for- I couldn’t see myself stopping if I had fractured my wrists so I didn’t see a dr after the fall. Still hurting 5 weeks later I went to a dr but they had healed incorrectly ?☹️ So I decided to take a year off of working out and hopefully heal. April of this year I slowly started taking walks and have worked up to run/walks about 3 miles. I haven’t brought back the intensive kickboxing and weight training I used to do. I miss it so much but would rather be functional in day to day life. Taking a break and slowing down to listen to your body is ok. ? I hope you figure out your health issues quickly. I’ve loved your blog and cookbooks for a long time. Happy to see new recipes. -Kendra
Hi Kendra, Oh wow what a journey you’ve been on. I can relate a lot (only it’s my knees that have given me issues since 2008)…good for you for taking the time to heal! I hope you continue to see progress :)
Hi Angela – ty for sharing such a great post! So true. I’m just curious if you’ve narrowed down your allergy causes at this point and what made you realize you had an allergy?
Hi Emily,
Sadly I don’t really have too many answers yet! But I’m hopeful. I’ve been having allergic reactions on my face for a long time now and they have increased in frequency since this past winter where they were happening every week or two. I was tested for food sensitivities (both igE blood and electrodermal testing) so right now anything that came back on my tests as “avoid” I’m not consuming to hopefully allow my gut to heal. This is temporary and then I re-introduce foods one at a time eventually. I’m also taking a couple supplements for gut health as well as probiotics. My naturopath thinks the gut/allergy issues are just part of the problem though so I’m getting saliva hormone testing and thyroid testing done this week. Apparently it’s quite common for hormones to be way out of whack after pregnancy (especially two pregnancies in a row like I had) and it can even cause allergic reactions! Who knew? I’ve had a bunch of other symptoms though. Still lots to figure out, but I’m hopeful I will get there in due time. :)
I love the sound of these. Do you think they would hold up well if stored outside the fridge for a few hours? We are flying next week and I’d love to pack these along for when my kids get the plane munchies.
That’s a great question Amanda! I’m not positive but I think they should hold up okay. If you can add a small ice pack even better. :) Also rolling them in shredded coconut will help them from becoming super sticky to the touch a bit.
