An extra hour

November 2, 2008

Did you forget to turn your clocks back like we did?? I got up this morning around 8:45am, and was pleasantly surprised when my computer clock said it was only 7:45am! Who hoo. A free hour in the day!

Last night, Eric and I went grocery shopping and watched the Leafs game. It was a really good game! They came back from a 2-0 deficit and won 5-2 in the last 5 minutes of the game. Sweet.

A quick and fun poll of the day for you all:

Living in Canada, I find the long winter season to be tough. Our summers are so short and then we have to put up with a winter that often drags from November to April! Yuk. The short days also due me in. It gets so depressing! Does anyone have any tips or tricks that have helped them get through winters? I always feel like I get into a ‘rut‘ and would like to avoid that this season!

My breakfast this morning was delicious! I had a bowl of Nature’s Path Spelt cereal with Almond Milk, a huge, juicy kiwi, and a big cup of Organic Peppermint tea. Yum! Now I am trying to decide what my workout will be for the day….hmmm….

Did you know that spelt is one of the world’s healthiest foods??

Angela,
I am so happy to accidentally find your website when searching for vegan recipes that resemble food! Not only did I find a ton of yummy looking recipes to try, but I got a chance to read your story and some of your blogs.
Eerily, we have a lot in common! I am going through what I call my “bridge to veganism” but I have always had a profound interest in food, nutrition and exercise since I was a little girl….and it’s turned into an obsession..not a healthy one.
As soon as I got a car in high school..I got a gym membership. At the time I did not realize it, but I was bulimic…going through cycles of binge eating and using laxatives, extreme calorie restriction and excessive exercising.
In college I actually lost weight, and my relationship with food was more normal. I was busy with nursing school..(I originally wanted to be a RD also)..and I guess by mind was just occupied with other things,
In the past 4 years the food obsession has come back to haunt me. I started exercising more and really getting into shape, plus I started running. Naturally my appetite grew, so I started eating more and I gained weight…Even though a good portion of it was lean muscle mass…I had a real problem with it.
So the calorie counting started.. restricting myself..then the binge eating when my body could no longer take it..then the guilt.
I long for a normal relationship with food. Just to be able to enjoy tasty, nutritious food and the occasional treat without feeling guilty. I’m sick of my thoughts being clouded with calories I’ve eaten and workouts I’m going to do.
Until reading your story today, I didn’t realize that other people had this problem. I am so glad to hear that you have overcome this. Your story is very inspiring and I hope it will help me in my journey. Thank you :)

I’ve found light boxes to be helpful in the winter. Not only can they boost your mood, but they can help you wake up in the morning and adjust to time changes. The Day-Light company’s Classic SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) light box is great. We’ve had one for years and we love it. We put it away every summer and pull it out every winter.

I realize this is an older post and you may have found ways to deal already. When I was young and in my 20’s I hated hated winters. They were so cold and I dreaded going out. Now in my 40’s I have learned to love and appreciate each season for it’s unique qualities and beauty. Each one has something wonderful to offer.
