I never thought I’d say this, but I’m in the final days of finishing my cookbook manuscript and handing it in to my editor. After 15 months of testing recipes, writing, and shooting photography, I finally feel like things are coming together. Very, very slowly, mind you. I’ve shot about 50 recipe photographs so far, but that means I still have at least 50 recipes to remake and photograph. gulp, gulp, gulp. I’ve heard the editing process is pretty brutal, so I’m just taking it one day at a time and not looking too far ahead. The journey of getting my recipes to a place where I’m happy (and all my recipe testers) has taken much longer than I anticipated, but I didn’t want to rush the process. Quality over quantity, I say. If this is the only cookbook I ever write, I want it to be something I’m proud of. And seriously, it might be the only cookbook I ever write!
Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say hello! I might not be able to post as much as I’d like to over the next couple weeks, but just know that I’m thinking of you always and looking forward to sharing some recipe inspiration as soon as I can. Right now, every creative cell in my body seems to be on hiatus, but it will recharge soon enough. Isn’t that what red wine is for??

The Flavor Bible, described as “the essential guide to culinary creativity”, profiles ingredients and the corresponding herbs, spices, seasonings, etc. that pair well with each of these ingredients. As someone who has grown to love recipe creation, this book is a resource tool that I turn to when I’m looking for a nudge in the right direction. When I have an ingredient in mind that I’d like to cook with, I often look to this book for suggestions of other “compatible” ingredients that I can include in the dish. For my full review, see here.

Congrats, you’re halfway there! I am actually reading The Flavour Bible right now, I rented it from the library after your first post about it. I would LOVE to own it, it is so amazing! I’m also reading Michael J. Fox’s autobiography, A Lucky Man. He is a fantastic writer and the book is so meaningful. It has this powerful ability to make you reflect on your own life while stepping outside yourself for a minute. It that makes any sense!
Hi there, I made Dreena’s jerk chickpeas, a recipe you shared on your blog in the last year and was amaaaaazing.
Right now I’m increasingly interested in food policy and food security. The last book I read was The Stop: How the Fight for Good Food transformed a Community and Inspired a Movement. It is the amazing tale of the creation of The Stop Community Food Centre in Toronto that looks at the multitude of challenges many people face to getting healthy food on their plate, the power of food to bring people together, the failures of the traditional food bank model in lessening hunger, and the importance of community, dignity and advocacy to change the current political and socio-economic landscape to better support the less fortunate. Highly recommended!
Currently reading Ottolenghi’s Plenty and Superfood Kitchen by Julie Morris. Both are great but if I had to choose, Ottolenghi is genius.
Always love reading the Moosewood Cookbooks and Savuer Magazine. For fun, Conscious Capitalism by John Mackey. I hope to put your favs in my rotation!
I really like the “Forks Over Knives” cookbook and “Crazy Sexy Kitchen” by Kris Carr. I am cooking my way through both and am loving the recipes. My favourite treat cookbook is “Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World” by Isa Chanrda Moskowitz. Thanks for posting your healthy recipes, Angela. They have been my greatest tool as I strive to live a healthy vegan lifestyle!

I am reading Clean by Alejandro Junger. I’m not quite a vegan yet but getting there! I’m almost a vegetarian and I eat gluten free. What aren’t I reading right now? I have about 22 books checked out from the library. I’m obsessed with cookbooks, crafting, jewelry-making, and DIY design & decorating. Love the library! But when I find a must-have, I buy it for my personal library!
I am reading “John Joseph Merlin: The Ingenious Mechanick.” He was an inventor/entrepreneur in the 1700s. His portrait was in an exhibit I went to at the Seattle Art Museum and the description of him in the exhibit intrigued me. It’s an interlibrary loan (public libraries rock!) and I have to finish it by Friday, so I’ve gotta go.
