I never thought I’d say this, but I’m in the final days of finishing my cookbook manuscript and handing it in to my editor. After 15 months of testing recipes, writing, and shooting photography, I finally feel like things are coming together. Very, very slowly, mind you. I’ve shot about 50 recipe photographs so far, but that means I still have at least 50 recipes to remake and photograph. gulp, gulp, gulp. I’ve heard the editing process is pretty brutal, so I’m just taking it one day at a time and not looking too far ahead. The journey of getting my recipes to a place where I’m happy (and all my recipe testers) has taken much longer than I anticipated, but I didn’t want to rush the process. Quality over quantity, I say. If this is the only cookbook I ever write, I want it to be something I’m proud of. And seriously, it might be the only cookbook I ever write!
Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say hello! I might not be able to post as much as I’d like to over the next couple weeks, but just know that I’m thinking of you always and looking forward to sharing some recipe inspiration as soon as I can. Right now, every creative cell in my body seems to be on hiatus, but it will recharge soon enough. Isn’t that what red wine is for??
Now for the giveaway fun! In my mind, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good cookbook and feeling more inspired with each turning page. Today’s giveaway highlights a couple awesome vegan cookbooks that I have in my collection as well as my favourite recipe creation tool that I reviewed recently – The Flavor Bible! I’m giving away all the books below to one lucky winner. If you happen to already own one or some of these cookbooks, I’ll be happy to send you an Amazon gift card instead. You decide. The books will be shipped new directly from Amazon.
In this giveaway:
Let Them Eat Vegan by Dreena Burton
Let Them Eat Vegan! is packed with 200 plant-powered recipes for the entire family. Dreena offers notes on how to modify her recipes for those with allergies or common substitution questions. Natural vegan ingredients are abundant in her recipes, many of which I already have in my own pantry. See my full review here.
Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero
Veganomicon is truly a work of art. With over 250 recipes for any occasion, this is a cookbook I turn to often. Whether you’re in the mood for something quick and easy or something fancy and elaborate, this book will have it. There are also handy user-friendly guides for soy-free, gluten-free, low-fat, and quick and easy recipes.
The Flavor Bible by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg
The Flavor Bible, described as “the essential guide to culinary creativity”, profiles ingredients and the corresponding herbs, spices, seasonings, etc. that pair well with each of these ingredients. As someone who has grown to love recipe creation, this book is a resource tool that I turn to when I’m looking for a nudge in the right direction. When I have an ingredient in mind that I’d like to cook with, I often look to this book for suggestions of other “compatible” ingredients that I can include in the dish. For my full review, see here.

I’m reading Wife 22 right now. It’s very modern with lots of Facebook and emailing, but not in a bad way like some I’ve read. I’m really excited to finish it because I think the ending is going to be a twist…I’m just hoping it’s what I think it will be & not something else!
I read Wife 22 a few months ago – loved it! No spoilers from me :-)
YAY! CONGRATS! I am very much looking forward to getting your cookbook in the future!!!
I am actually ready “The Plant Based Power Diet” By Leslie Beck. I am 5 years veggie this summer and felt like I was do for a refresher on why I chose this lifestyle…. still shocks me to read the correlation of animal fat and disease. That fish burger that tempted me a few weeks ago…. I laugh in the face of! :)
I haven’t been reading too many cookbooks recently which is not a good thing. Time for some new ones! These look awesome! Lately I have been re-reading the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R. Martin and discovered an author I have not read before, William Kent Krueger, who writes a mystery series that I am greatly enjoying.
I picked up the Flavor Bible last weekend based on your recommendation! Interesting book. I’ve never read Let Them Eat Vegan but I’d love to check it out.
All the best with your final cookbook stages!
being a mom of two little ones, it’s difficult to find a lot of time to pull meals together. i love weelicious right now. it has so many great recipes in it and i love the layout of the book….beautiful photographs.
I’m currently reading Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Great story!
As for cookbooks, I’m loving my King Arthur Flour Baker’s Companion.
If you end up liking things fall apart, be sure to read the sequel , No Longer at Ease! I loved that one !
Thanks, for the tip! I’ve read Things Fall Apart a few times (albeit for classes) and didn’t know there was a sequel.
My newest cookbook is “More Peas, Thank You,” which I love. I’m also reading, “You’re Already Amazing” by Holley Gerth. Wonderful book about making the most of ourselves.
BTW, I made the Banana Bread Protein Bars last night. Do they need to be refrigerated? I find that anything with banana in it tends to go moldy quickly.
guilty pleasure…tween novels! I just finished the Divergent and Insurgent books by Veronica Roth, easy-fun reading :)
In terms of cookbooks, I am (always) reading How To Cook Everything Vegetarian by Mark Bittman — I learn new things every day!
Ooh – lovely, thanks!
I just finished Barbara kingsolver’s new book Flight Behaviour. Well worth a read!
I’m reading Women Food and God by Geneen Roth. It’s incredibly real and insightful…helping me gain a new perspective on my relationship with food and recovery from an eating disorder. The way we eat is an indication of how we view and treat ourselves. All of us deserve healthy and delicious meals! Would love to try these new cookbooks to do just that :)
I read Women, Food and God a couple years ago and it really helped me turn the corner in my recovery
I just finished the audio book version of Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter and am about to start The View on the Way Down by Rebecca Wait.

I read Gone Girl and loved. Couldn’t put it down!
I’m currently reading “Pray the Gay Away: The Extraordinary Lives of Bible Belt Gays” by Bernadette Barton. As an ally living in the same state as Ms. Barton (Kentucky), I find it fascinating and heartbreaking.
Yippee! COOKBOOKS! Right now I’m reading my way through a stack of academic journal articles on foreign brides in South Korea (I know you envy me.) ;)
Do people in S Korea still have arranged marriages? Many years ago I wanted to marry a Japanese man but his family arranged a marriage for him instead. I was devastated.
I’m so looking forward to your cookbook!! I just ordered “More Peas Thank You” so hopefully I’ll be reading that soon. I can’t wait for yours, best of luck finishing it!
