I never thought I’d say this, but I’m in the final days of finishing my cookbook manuscript and handing it in to my editor. After 15 months of testing recipes, writing, and shooting photography, I finally feel like things are coming together. Very, very slowly, mind you. I’ve shot about 50 recipe photographs so far, but that means I still have at least 50 recipes to remake and photograph. gulp, gulp, gulp. I’ve heard the editing process is pretty brutal, so I’m just taking it one day at a time and not looking too far ahead. The journey of getting my recipes to a place where I’m happy (and all my recipe testers) has taken much longer than I anticipated, but I didn’t want to rush the process. Quality over quantity, I say. If this is the only cookbook I ever write, I want it to be something I’m proud of. And seriously, it might be the only cookbook I ever write!
Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say hello! I might not be able to post as much as I’d like to over the next couple weeks, but just know that I’m thinking of you always and looking forward to sharing some recipe inspiration as soon as I can. Right now, every creative cell in my body seems to be on hiatus, but it will recharge soon enough. Isn’t that what red wine is for??
Now for the giveaway fun! In my mind, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good cookbook and feeling more inspired with each turning page. Today’s giveaway highlights a couple awesome vegan cookbooks that I have in my collection as well as my favourite recipe creation tool that I reviewed recently – The Flavor Bible! I’m giving away all the books below to one lucky winner. If you happen to already own one or some of these cookbooks, I’ll be happy to send you an Amazon gift card instead. You decide. The books will be shipped new directly from Amazon.
In this giveaway:
Let Them Eat Vegan by Dreena Burton
Let Them Eat Vegan! is packed with 200 plant-powered recipes for the entire family. Dreena offers notes on how to modify her recipes for those with allergies or common substitution questions. Natural vegan ingredients are abundant in her recipes, many of which I already have in my own pantry. See my full review here.
Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero
Veganomicon is truly a work of art. With over 250 recipes for any occasion, this is a cookbook I turn to often. Whether you’re in the mood for something quick and easy or something fancy and elaborate, this book will have it. There are also handy user-friendly guides for soy-free, gluten-free, low-fat, and quick and easy recipes.
The Flavor Bible by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg
The Flavor Bible, described as “the essential guide to culinary creativity”, profiles ingredients and the corresponding herbs, spices, seasonings, etc. that pair well with each of these ingredients. As someone who has grown to love recipe creation, this book is a resource tool that I turn to when I’m looking for a nudge in the right direction. When I have an ingredient in mind that I’d like to cook with, I often look to this book for suggestions of other “compatible” ingredients that I can include in the dish. For my full review, see here.

I’m posting for my husband. He loves to cook. He is reading the last Game of Thrones book currently but the newest book for food is Meals that Heal Inflammation by Julie Daniluk. He was recently diagnosed with Crohn’s and looking into different types of foods to eat. I think the flavor bible would be great for him as needs to expand his flavours. Thanks for the reviews.
A cookbook I read again and again: Amanda Cohen & Ryan Dunlavey: dirt candy. A cookbook. Amanda runs a vegetarian restaurant in New York – a great little place and offers lots of vegan dishes and vegan options of her delicious creations. Some of those recipes she put into the book. But most excitingly this book is a comic book! You’re diving into the stress and excitement of running a little restaurant, dealing with customers and colleagues and working on dishes until you’re finally satisfied with taste and looks. Funny, witty, best cook book ever!
I’m reading ‘You Can Create An Exceptional Life’ by Louise Hay for a bit of inspiration and I’m re-reading ‘The Bronze Horseman’ by Paulina Simons for the 3rd time because I just love it so much! It’s such a beautiful love story.
I am reading The Epicurious Cookbook. Yes that is what I love to read many different cookbooks. Some think I am crazy but the photos are so beautiful and the info extraordinary. Looking forward to your cookbook! Thanks for the giveaway!
PS. Taking one day at a time is such a good thing!!
Currently, I’m reading both of Chef Chloe’s cookbooks.
Thanks for the contest, Angela! Sending you good vibes that your final production days go smoothly.
I’m loving seeing what everyone is reading. I recently finished Heading out to Wonderful by Robert Goolrick–an amazing southern writer. I’m almost done with Wool by Hugh Howey–a sci if novel that harkens back to the days of Heinlein and Herbert. For anyone who likes scifi–this will be a treat for you.
I am reading “Crazy, Sexy, Diet” by Kris Carr as well as “Under the Banner of Heaven” by Jon Krakauer. Obviously very different, but both very good books!
Even though I’ll miss your regular posts, I am so excited for the cookbook to come out! The last book I read (I don’t get to do much “fun” reading being so busy at college) was American Gods by Neil Gaiman. He’s one of my favorite authors. Good luck finishing up your book!
I’m not reading anything right now. I’m taking a break after finishing school before I delve into anything new. I am listening to some podcasts though ;) or does reading your blog count as reading material!? :P
salt, sugar, fat by michael moss. scary!
I’m reading Karen Kingsbury’s Redemption series….holy cow…they’re SO good!! :)
And thanks for this awesome opportunity, Angela!! :D
CAN’T WAIT for YOUR cookbook!!!
I love reading your blog! I recently made the switch from veggie to vegan and I the recipe list I use from you is endless. Everyone I know is excited when I cook. I just finished reading Healthy Living, Healthy World. It goes through and explains the greatness of whole foods, plant based diets. I listened to it on disc while driving, and have recommended it to so many people!
Thanks for all your recipes! Can’t wait for more!
Just finished Wards of Faerie by Terry Brooks. Book two is on order from the library… can’t wait for it to get here!!
I recently had my first baby and am busy reading What to Expect in the First Year. The WTE books are really very helpful in navigating the whole process of having a baby and raising a child :-)
Just now starting to return to my pre-baby vegan diet and would absolutely love to win the cookbooks!!
I already follow you on Pinterest, but just “Liked” your facebook page now too!
I recently read INSIDE a novel by Canadian author Alex Ohlin. It was a very good read! I think everyone could find something in it to relate to.
Reading articles online about gluten free vegan options and found your website!! #happy!
I have been mostly using your website for my recipes! Before eating vegan I used Joy of Cooking and this country cooking magazine prescription. I am no longer vegan because I lost too much wight (!) but my mom still is and I make her vegan food and I still very much enjoy eating it myself!
Thanks Angela, We Love Your Website and Recipes!

Opps…! John Paul the Great, Remembering a Spiritual Father (by Peggy Noonan). The book rocks and so does former pope John Paul II!
I’m currently revisiting one of my favorite cookbooks of all time, “How to Cook Everything Vegetarian,” in anticipation of Mark Bittman’s new book, “VB6.” Sadly, I don’t own many strictly vegan cookbooks, so these would be an AMAZING addition!
I’m still mooning over Bon Appetit’s Dessert cookbook. I got it over two years ago but I haven’t even made 1% of all the gorgeous treats in there!
