Hello there.
We finally picked up a few groceries and what is the first thing I do?
Make homemade hummus!
As you may know, hummus is a food group for me. Other foods are just ways to get more hummus into my belly.

I present to you the Hummus Crackwich.
I felt bad for all those baby chicks I was eating…

Hardy-har-har. Lame joke, I know.

It has been wayyyyy too long since I made hummus. After tasting this, I wanted to kick myself for getting out of the habit.
Sweet + Sour Homemade Hummus
Ingredients:
- 1 large can (540 ml/2 cups) organic chickpeas
- Approx 1 tsp Apple Cider vinegar (regular vinegar also works)
- 1-1.5 tsp Mr. Spice Sweet and Sour Sauce (the secret ingredient revealed!)
- 1.5 tsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 garlic clove, minced or chopped fine
- Pinch of sea salt (to taste)
- A bit of water to thin out, if you think it is necessary
Directions: Drain and rinse chickpeas. Add all ingredients into the food processor and process until smooth scraping down the sides of the bowl as necessary. Add a bit of water if you want to thin it out more.

[I spy Eric in the background!]
I love Mr. Spice. The products are salt free, but they taste incredible! I don’t know how he does it. I think I picked up this bottle in the organic/natural food section in Loblaws.

The hummus was deelish! You could make this recipe without the S+S sauce or perhaps put another kind of sauce into the mix! I was wondering what a BBQ hummus might taste like? Perhaps using roasted chickpeas? Might be worth trying next time…
Did you know there is such a thing as DESSERT hummus!? I must try to make this. What flavour should I attempt? Do you think it would taste good?
New food creations make me all warm inside.

Just have discovered a love affair with hummus. Sweet and sour sounds sooo good. I think anything pb + chocolate would be pretty amazing.
Yumm.. can’t believe I’ve never made hummus before! I love it but my food processor is not the best thing ever.. not sure it can take it!
And chocolate mousse hummus?! Oh my my my…
Ahhh hummus. It totally does need it’s own food group!!
LOVE homemade hummus – your mix of stuff sounds so good!
Mmmm….sweet + sour hummus is brilliant! As are crack sammies with Mary’s + hummus! :-)
Bbut . . . no tahini! Ya gotta have some tahini in there!
I was wondering about that too! No tahini???
I don’t really like tahini much myself, but I always use it in hummus because I thought it was like, sacrilegious or something not to, haha.
Wow I’ve never heard of dessert hummus but would be curious! I saw a post about PB hummus today and that kind of weirds me out but I won’t knock it til I try it!
I haven’t had hummus in so long…you know why? Because it’s so so easy to make at home that I never buy it in the store. I haven’t made it in forever though!!
hummus crackwich love it :-) i have a love hate relationship with hummus, sometimes i like and others i’m not so sure, but i am always open to giving it a shot..
I have never heard of dessert hummus. I probably would like it though. Hummus + dessert. Nothing wrong with that. Yours sounds excellent.
I love hummus but never seem to re-create my favorite store bought varieties at home. Maybe I need to use fresh chick peas?
It’s definitely a food group all on its own, so versatile and yummy!
I predict a crackwich blog takeover in the near future….
Oh my dear. Yes, homemade hummus is amazing and it’s definitely a food group. That is one of the foods that used to be on my “hate” list! Insane. Your recipe sounds really yummy. Also, I definitely have those little sorbet cups from C+B. So adorable. AND you must must must try my curry honey hummus recipe [subbing brown rice syrup would work instead of honey I’m sure]. Dessert hummus? Sounds weird, but I’ll try it! LMAO to “crackwich”
Yum! A great food group! Crackwich sounds good! Thanks for the recipe.
I actually just got some of the Crazy Camel dessert hummus and it’s pretty good! It really doesn’t taste like true hummus and it’s not as creamy. I think because it’s missing tahini maybe? But it’s definitely tasty!
The hummus with the spoon totally looks like ice cream. It’s as good as ice cream, too.
wow wow wow
love hummus SO much
how about an almond butter-chocolate chip hummus //
yummy
Hmmm..strawberry hummus?? or ohhhh..maple hummus! I bet either would be yummy :)
Dessert hummus! Why, I’ve never heard of such a thing! You must make it, and report the findings back to your faithful readers. Pleeeeeeeeease. :)
Ohh I love homemade hummus :D I made dessert hummus once! My advice: Lots of sweetner lol. It was good, but I still detected a bean-y flavor
I love hummus it seems to go with everything! I have never thought of Dessert hummus but I am sure willing to try it. Keep up the great work!
oooh I would never have thought to add in the apple cider vinegar or sweet and sour sauce – but what a GREAT idea!!!!
I’ve been looking for a good hummus recipe. I think I’ll try this tonight. Thanks!
On a completely different note, your photographs are wonderful! What type of camera/lens do you use? It’s hard photographing food and making it look appetizing, but you make it look so easy. Good job!
I went to a gourmet food show and tried two amazing hummus flavours – chocolate and curry! sounds weird but sooooo good.
I love it! I always make spicy cajun hummus at home :)
I love hummus! I’m super lazy and I just buy it from the store, but yours looks incredible with its secret ingredient.
Very interesting about the dessert hummus! I would have never thought of that. Your recipe looks delish. Have a great night!
I have never heard of such a thing as a dessert hummus. Sounds interesting!
I love just a good garlic hummus.
Just in case you were wondering, this post made me race to the kitchen, tear open a new tub of hummus, and stick a Food Should Taste Good chip right into it. I much prefer the homemade kind myself. I’ve been thinking about experimenting with a dessert-y hummus and one of the ideas I’ve had is to use coconut oil in place of olive oil, but I’m still thinking about what kind of flavor profile I want to go for. What about Mexican Hot Chocolate hummus? Oooooohhhhhhhh….
hummus rocks!
Dessert hummus!? thats ballin’
sweet and sour hummus sounds downright AMAZING… i wish loblaws was closer to my house!!
I would have never thought of Sweet and Sour hummus… so creative! I made a Cinnamon PB Hummus on my blog a few months back… but I haven’t made any hummus at all in what now feels like forever. Will need to remedy that soon!
Scratch that, I just made one that is SO MUCH better (in both texture and taste) than my first attempt at dessert hummus… Maple Peanut Dessert Hummus! Yummmm
Your “lame joke” reminds me of when I was little eating at Long John Silvers. They had these breaded balls called hushpuppies (basically bread balls, deep fried). I loved them. One day, I turned to my mom and said, “Mom, these are so good, but isn’t it sad that they’re made of puppies?” he he…
Also, hummus is a food group for me, as well. Specifically red pepper hummus.
Oh my gosh! Dessert hummus!? What a great idea!
Maybe Maple Syrup? Or cinnamon and dried fruit… perhaps apricot?
Good luck!
Hi,
Just wondering since I’ve never made hummus myself and plan to do so soon.
Aren’t the chickpeas supposed to be cooked? At least that’s what all the recipes I googled for last week told me. Also did you intentionally leave out tahini. I thought it was one of the ‘must’ ingredients. In fact, that’s what kept me from making hummus all along – I couldn’t find tahini in stores near me until now.
Love your recipes!
Have a good day.
Sasha
If the chickpeas are from a can, they are already cooked.
When I discovered Hummus, I was in love for life. I eat almost daily. Yummy to my tastebuds and my tummy!!! I just had hummus w/kashi multi grain crackers for dinner with green olives….quite good and easy to carry on a road trip.
Hmmmm…dessert hummus, I’m thinking organic dark chocolate something. :)
You seem to be missing the most crucial ingredient – tahini!!! It makes hummus so much richer and creamier.
I make hummus weekly. It is definitely a food group for me.
How fun! Would LOVE to make my own hummus!
I often add a squeeze of fresh lemon to mine, as well as the tahini.
Love hummus so much! I usually cook up a huge batch of chickpeas, freeze most of them, and make small batches of hummus as needed.
I think you’d like this broccoli hummus recipe: http://inpraiseofleftovers.com/2010/05/19/broccoli-hummus/
I hear you on the hummus! I just made some a couple of days ago, and it is already gone! I need to make some more!
I.LOVE.HUMMUS. ’nuff said :-)
Hummus is the food of life. Seriously!
I have never tried to make a sweet hummus but I do like it with orange slices. Sounds weird but it works!!!
Dessert hummus? Now thats a fun recipe to work with. Maybe a spiced vanilla or cinammon? Are you going to make some? Ohhhh….can’t wait to see whatcha come up with. FUN and YUM!
I just made a black bean hummus that was awesome! I so love hummus!! I agree, it does need its own food group!
If I scrolled down without reading, I might have thought that was ice cream. Yummmm.
I’ve attempted to make hummus before, but the reaction wasn’t good, and I made too much so I ended up throwing it out. D: I hated wasting it! I like a stronger tahini flavour in my hummus, I’ve found, so I guess I’ll grind up more sesame next time. (Yeah, I ground my own tahini. No, I don’t think it was especially effective.) I’ll try again next time… :S
Wei-Wei
OBVIOUSLY hummus is a food group! ;)
I love the idea of sweet & sour hummus, yum!
And YES I knew there was dessert hummus but have yet to try it!!! Though I think I need to, seeing as they are two of my favorite things!
xo
K
Dessert hummus?!
I think peanut butter would really lend itself well to chickpeas. Ooh, I may just have to attempt a peanut butter hummus recipe myself. I’m salivating just thinking about it!
Dessert hummus? What a wonderful idea! And what flavor….
Hmm…mm…. Fluffernutter?? (Like a fluffernutter sandwich… nutella and marshmallow!!!)
Could gourmet it up… use real hazelnuts… and not sure about the marshmallows… might just have to use plain ole ones…
I find getting the consistency of hummus perfect is tough. I make some pretty great baba ghanoush though!
http://gamereviewwiki.com/bikinibirthday/2010/05/13/day-108-baba-ghanoush/
I love getting creative with making spreads. The sweet & sour hummus is a great idea! :) I’ve been thinking about trying to make an avacado hummus. There’s no way you can go wrong with that flavour combo!
My favorite hummus is Trader Joe’s horseradish hummus. I can eat an entire tub in a sitting. It’s sooo good!
i agree hummus should be it’s own food group!
There should definitely be an added food group for hummus! And I agree…veggies/chips/crackers are just vehicles to get the hummus in mah belly!
I totally agree!! All other foods are just a vessel to eat my hummus! I love it so much, it is a staple in my house and I eat it on a daily basis pretty much. I have made my own, but I cheat a lot and buy it from the store because I go through it so fast. Your mixture sounds good though, I’ll have to give it a try :)
Hummus is a food group!!!! And my favorite hummus so far is Trader Joe’s jalapeno and cilantro. Try recreating that – if it’s anything like TJ’s, you’ll fall in love!
I feel like hummus I make at home is never that good at all, especially compared to the stuff I can get in a Greek restaurant. Maybe I just haven’t found the right recipe yet?
I agree- hummus should definitely be a food group!! I love the idea of the sweet & sour sauce mixed in-mmmm!
Okay — I have to try to make dessert hummus at some point! It makes me think of a much healthier version of “cheesecake dip”. The possibilities are endless!
I made chocolate/peanut butter dessert hummus. It was super good. My husband thought I was crazy, but once he tried it he realized I wasn’t. I definitely recommend trying it out.
Dessert hummus??? I don’t know about that…. :-)
It never turns out right when I try to make it (something about the texture is always off) but I love other people’s artichoke hummus. I also like garlic hummus.
I think BBQ sauce in hummus would be really good b/c I actually like to combine 1/2 spicy bbq sauce and 1/2 hummus and eat it on wraps (it’s so good with spinach!).
I don’t really like the store bought hummus that much anymore (though my fiance eats a jar a week), but I would like to try the Sabra lemon hummus (sadly, fiance does not share my love for all things lemon so we stick to plain).
haha I totally agree with this! My love affair with hummus goes way back, but it wasn’t until relatively recently that I actually started making my own (and of course once I did, I wondered why I ever spent all that money on store bought!)
And no, I did NOT know there was dessert hummus. I guess I never thought about making it sweet. But pumpkin pie or maple walnut hummus?? That sounds amazing :)
sign me up for some of that dessert hummus! i’ll be blogstalking OSG til you make it :)
oh i just dont know how i feel about dessert hummus! someone (hint hint) needs to make it! ha. sorry i wont be the guinea pig on that one ;)
You’re a genius. I am going to attempt BBQ hummus later today!! I’ll keep you posted ;-)
A friend of mine asked me yesterday what I eat with hummus. He couldn’t think of anything besides pita chips! I told him any kind of veggies, any kind of cracker/bread, or straight off a spoon. :)
I made chocolate hummus a while back and it was amazing. Too amazing. I ate the whole batch in a day and a half!!
Dessert hummus?! Hmm… I think I have a hard time with things that are normally one way being another…like your savory oats! I’m sure they are awesome, though. Dessert hummus…maybe some sort of lemon confection? I’m sure you’ll whip up something stellar!
I actually just made chocolate hummus a couple of days ago. chickpeas, unsweetened chocolate powder, and some kind of sweetener (i used dark brown molasses sugar). i definitely like it better after it’s been chilled in the fridge. kind of reminds me of chocolate cheese cake.
TRY IT! :D it’s now my favourite kind of hummus =p
I love hummus. We used to make homemade hummus all the time when I was growing up. I have not made in years – will have to get back in the habit. mmmm – definately will have to make soon :)
Hummus is DELICIOUS. Not to mention it’s a huge part of the Mediterranean Diet, and May is Mediterranean Month, so what a perfect post!
Ohhhh my. I can have hummus for dessert? You have made my day! I’ve been wanting to try Pioneer Woman’s homemade babaganoush recipe, but…. I love hummus even more. This goes to the top of the “to make” list :-)
I’ve seen apple hummus at Sobeys!! I haven’t bought it yet though because really, I just eat hummus to ingest obscene amounts of garlic. It takes a full day for my breath to get back to normal after ;)
Must keep my eyes peeled for Mr. Spice!
You should really try dried beans! they make such a flavor difference!
Hummus is yummus! I make my own, too. :)
Desert hummus!!!?? I would be very interested in hearing what that tastes like!!
And by “desert” I meant “dessert.” :-)
I am a hummus fiend! I love it, I make my own, but in emergencies will buy it at the market. But, I won’t buy it if it’s got any words in the ingredient list that I can’t pronounce. Regarding dessert hummus, I had never heard of it until two weeks ago. I was shopping for Thanksgiving and came across chocolate hummus! My mind went into spasms! Chocolate and hummus! What!? With bananna it’s mind blowing! I know, that’s a lot of exclamation marks! Right? Now I’m on a quest to create my own chocolate delight! I checked the Oh She Glows site, but haven’t found a recipe. That’s okay I’m adventuresome and am willing to brave the frontier of discovery.
