More on The August Challenge & Friday Links

August 3, 2012

IMG_6602

The August Challenge is in full force! I hope you are well on your way to making August a fear-conquering month.

I decided I need a way to keep myself accountable online throughout the month of August, so I created a page just for this challenge where I’ll be logging my daily feats. It’s going to function as a personal diary of sorts, only you’ll be able to follow along throughout the month. I encourage you to leave comments on the page documenting your own daily accomplishments. I see some of you have already done that, so thank you!

The page is found under the main menu “Popular” category and then under “Challenges”.

You can find my daily log here –> Do One Thing A Day That Scares You

I have so many things I want to tackle this month head-on and for the first time in a while, I feel inspired rather than just thinking about the fear associated with it.

Last night, I asked you on Facebook what fears you have overcome so far and I was blown away by your comments. You are all doing amazing things and I find myself inspired when I read how you are doing. Let’s keep the conversation going all month long!

A few of you mentioned that committing to one thing a day for an entire month is intimidating. Rather than feel intimidated, I encourage you to modify this challenge to suit your own needs. Maybe you’d rather set one overarching goal each week and work towards that. It’s really up to you how you want to go about it!

Angela, thank you so much for this challenge. It couldn’t have come at a better time. I have always struggled with anxiety, but I moved to a brand new city – all by myself – just this past Wednesday. It’s been hard to step outside my apartment without being crippled with unreasonable fears. Just the simple tasks of finding the grocery store or driving to the post office seem insurmountable. However, I’m using you as my inspiration and I’m going to really work on conquering my anxiety! Next up: finding a new running route :)

Again, thank you!

I signed up for my first race (a 5k) in four years! I stopped racing because I became terrified of failing/not finishing etc but I have challenged myself to give it another try and eventually work myself up to a marathon!!

so interesting that you are doing some “fear-conquering” over here!! i have been thinking so much about fear lately and how to start embracing it. i am liking the idea of thinking that fearlessness is not the goal, but rather to learn how to be afraid and move forward anyway. i am starting to welcome fear, and see it as an opportunity to do something really challenging and meaningful! i love your august challenge and am on definitely even more inspired to welcome fear into my life and be proud that i am NOW the type of person who does things EVEN THOUGH she is afraid of them!!
As always, thanks for your perspective, motivation, and uplifting spirit!!
glow on!!

This does not pertain to this post, but I just went to another blog, and she had some great pictures of “Corn on the Cob, 3 Ways.” I don’t know if it was the photos or what, but I *thought* I had gone to your blog. I was SO confused about the recipe with feta cheese. I thought, “Surely in the instructions she will mention that it is vegan, or give a brand name or something,” but instead, the caption was something like “Feta cheese is my favorite!!” I finally scrolled back up to the top to see that it wasn’t Oh She Glows (duh).

I guess I do have something about fears, though. I am a huge procrastinator in general, but definitely when it comes to school stuff. I realized in the past year that I think I procrastinate b/c then if the product isn’t great, I can blame it on last minute work. SO, this month, I need to research and write a lit review for a case project. I want to conquer that fear of failure and get it done asap!! I’ll let you know WHEN I do! :)

I kinda love how the meat industry is outraged at Meatless Monday. I just wish meat wasn’t subsidized so much and then they could see the reality of how much meat is really needed. I really hope the Meatless Monday campaign continues to grow and grow!!

My focus this month is to stop calorie counting and to only eat when hungry. So far, 5 days in I haven’t counted any calories…still working on only eating when hungry, but doing better. I love this challenge. :)

I am new to this whole thing. I have some health problems that have brought me here. I am not fat, just average, but I have developed food intolerances, and I have gained 20 lbs, a lack of energy, and brain fogginess. I don’t know where to start. I am trying to find recipes, things that I can change now instead of waiting until I understand what it is to be vegan or vegetarian. I want to learn that, but I don’t want to be eating what I am eating now. Does anyone have suggestions? Maybe someone can’t just lay it all out for me, but where is a good starting place? Please help…?????

This is a great challenge. I want to do it too, but first…I have to write a list of what I’m fearful of. ^^’ Everybody here has such great goals too! I hope everybody faces their fears with a fistful of courage. ;) Thanks so much for posting, Angela! For now, I’ve actually taken to the Gratitude Challenge, and I’ve found it to have a wonderful positive impact in my life… =] Thanks again, for everything!

You have always inspired me with your blog! You are one of the main reasons I switched to a healthier lifestyle. I now eat healthier, practice yoga, and even went vegetarian for lent. Now I always bake vegan and eat a mainly vegetarian/vegan diet! This challenge inspired me to now start my own blog, something I have been too afraid to do in the past. Thanks for your never-ending inspiration! Because of you, I am now glowing.;-)

I love this challenge, Angela, great choice! It is so hard and humbling to do what you’re afraid of, but so empowering as well. I’ve just started training for my first ‘sprint’ triathlon, which definitely scares me! We’ll see what happens…

I am in! I started surfing and Ang, it is terrifying for me! I am talking panic attack scary because those waves will seriously get you. However, I keep and keep going and it is slowly getting better, relaxing, and FUN. ;)
Great challenge!

I also have terrible anxiety and it stops me from trying or enjoying new things (particularly if I have to meet and speak to new people). I have signed up for an archery class, and while I am scared to do it by myself, it is something I would like to try.

I am a “vegan newbie”..going on 5 months. Thanks for your great recipes and advice on pantry items. Is it my imagination or does vegan seem to be everywhere now? Maybe I am just looking for it now, but it is encouraging to see people taking control over their own health. :)
