Project Natural Glow: Bare Minerals Mineral Veil Review

October 28, 2009

Hey guys! Just a quick note to let you know I have added Renew, Refresh, Empower, and Awake Glo Bars to the Glo Bakery Store!

~~~~
I finally have another product to review for Project Natural Glow!
I was sort of in a limbo phase where I hadn’t run out of any products, so I didn’t have to buy anything for a while. Don’t worry I have not forgotten about it though! I am still using up my old make-up, so I haven’t had to make any cosmetic purchases yet either!
Next up:
Bare Minerals i.d. Mineral Veil Powder
IMG_5614
I actually purchased this in Summer 2008. I was a bride-to-be on a mission. After a few uses, I decided that I didn’t like it. It seemed a bit chalky to me. It ended up in the back of my make-up organizer and I never paid it much attention since!
That is until my tried and true powder ran out several weeks ago. I was faced with purchasing a new powder for Project Natural Glow or giving this stuff another try! And because I am in the ‘use up what I have’ mode, I dug it up and gave it another whirl.
The result??
The Mineral Veil was better than I remembered.
Once I got over that the texture wasn’t exactly the same as the powder I had been using, I actually liked this powder.
My only dislike about it is that it goes on a bit dry. However, I just read online that they have a new Hydrating Mineral Veil powder out now. I will have to check it out.
Here I am with the regular Mineral Veil powder on:
This picture was taken with my point and shoot so the clarity isn’t great. In natural light, you can see the powder on my skin (unlike in the photo).
I am also dying to try the Bare Mineral Foundation! Amy gives a great demo of it:
Bare mineral products provide a SPF of 15. Because I didn’t know what most of the ingredients were, I looked them up on Skin Deep website. I was a bit surprised to find out that a couple of the ingredients are considered moderate to high risk.
1) Zea Mays Corn Starch
  • Absorbs oil. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
2) Zinc Stearate
  • I couldn’t find a description for this one. Low to moderate risk according to Skin Deep.
3) Magnesium Stearate
  • Magnesium Stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
4) Methylparaben
  • Methylparaben is the ester of methyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. High hazard according to Skin Deep.
5) Propylparaben
  • Propylparaben is the ester of n-propyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Moderate hazard according to Skin Deep.
6) Iron Oxides
  • Iron Oxides are inorganic compounds consisting of any one or combinations of synthetically prepared iron oxides. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
Unfortunately, I did not find an overall product review on bare Minerals by Skin Deep (only for individual ingredients). The individual ingredient ratings by Skin deep have made me wonder if some of the other mineral cosmetic companies offer better ingredients? Such as this mineral powder by Jane Iredale Cosmetics. It seems to contain less hazardous ingredients according to Skin Deep. None of the ingredients in the Jane Iredale loose powder have a hazard score over a 4. Now I’m not saying that every product I use has to be 100% natural and ‘safe’, but I figure if I am going to use a mineral powder, why not use the best one out there?
The Bare Mineral products are also on the expensive side, even though I admit they seem to last a very long time. I think there are other mineral companies that offer better prices though..
~~~

So let’s have a little girl talk today! ;)

I’m curious…

Have you tried Bare Mineral products? What do you think of them?

Do you use any other mineral products by other companies? What companies do you think are the best priced?

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

I’m getting my hair chopped this afternoon…can’t wait! Stay tuned for the before and after. :)

I did not like Bare Minerals at all. It made my skin itch and burn. For a veil powder I like aromaleigh. They have a hd powder. For foundation I like Classy Minerals or Meow Cosmetics.

I used to love Bare Minerals and used it without a reaction on my face for years. Then I started working in the natural health industry and realized that it is not as clean as I thought it was supposed to be. If you want a clean make-up line that is truly amazing try Gabriel cosmetics or it’s other brand Zuzu Luxe. They are based out of Bellevue Washington and their concealer and blush have been mentioned in InSyle magazine and various other publications. I have met Gabriel himself and he is committed to making women beautiful with out chemicals! It’s the only thing I wear besides Aubrey Organics make-up!

I LOVE my BareMinerals! But I would never have thought it would contain anything but pure, healthy rock minerals in it .. that’s so odd. I feel like it’s almost false advertising.

I know I’m a bit late commenting on this, but I just had to put my vote in for Jane Iredale. It is the most amazing mineral foundation I have ever tried! I have to admit I was spectacle about it at first, but on my last trip home my mum marched me down to her beauty therapist and bought me a Jane Iredale foundation – and I have never looked back. I can honestly say I have not had a SINGLE breakout since I started using it (apart from the occasional tiny blackhead), my skin is brighter, visibly healthier, and I am more confidant and feel positively radiant. My mother and sister also use her foundations – my mother went through a phase of having terrible, ugly breakouts (and she is in her late 40’s!) which no amount of treatments and consultations with leading dermatologists could fix – she started using Jane Iredale, and to this day her skin is clear and beautiful – breakout free!

Ok I know I am going on a bit here, but I just love this product so much I want to recommend it to everyone I know!

I love my bare minerals! I have used many other products but they all caused a reaction. It makes my face look great, hides all the discolouration caused by “mask of pregnancy” that never went away, and I don’t even feel like I am wearing anything.

I have been using Bare Minerals for about a year and a half now. I LOVE it. I feel like I’m not wearing any makeup and it doesn’t look like it either. I have a friend who has roseasia (spelling?) and she loves bare minerals too – it makes her skin look almost flawless. If you have dry skin (which I do) just load up on the moisturizer and wait for it to dry – if you apply the makeup once your moisturizer is dry you should be good to go!!! This is the first and only foundation I have been able to use that doesn’t dry up my forehead lol

I used Bare Minerals for awhile, but I just switched over to MAC’s mineral line and I love it!! It makes my skin look and feel like silk. It blows Bare Minerals out of the water. MAC is a bit on the expensive side, but it’s totally worth it.

Just like you I found Bare Minerals to be chalky looking. I bought the whole starter kit and found it was a pain to deal with, so many different layers of powders to put on and it’s really messy. I got very little coverage, I even emailed Lisa a host on QVC who sells it and she replied that she can’t use it by itself either, she uses a different foundation under it. I returned it within 2 weeks and use MAC now.

For mineral foundation without many ingredients try the Body Shop it only contains four ingredients (one which is SPF and another two are natural clays.) Great light to medium coverage with only a few ingredients.

LOOOOVE BareMinerals. I also read about them on Skin Deep and was quite surprised, but I didn’t think it sounded horrible.

I think their Warmth and brushes are one of a kind, but the foundation is comparable to other mineral foundations. I don’t use the Mineral Veil anymore. Just foundation, warmth and the sparkley one that comes in the starter pack.

Eeeek, I’m soooo allergic to Bare Minerals! Isn’t that weird, being that there supposed to be so “natural?” It’s such a shame, because I always hear good things about the products.

Hm, I just read some of the comments – maybe it is the bismuth oxychloride that caused my allergic reaction! Good to know :)

I use bare minerals and I so far I’ve liked it but I know that Whole Foods has a mineral foundation that doesn’t have the high risks. My boyfriend’s sister uses and likes it. Perhaps that one would be a good one to try.

Hi Angela!

I just discovered your website, and I’m loving it! I hope I’m not too late to the discussion, but one mineral makeup company that (in my humble opinion) is head and shoulders above the rest is Aromaleigh. It’s a small, woman-owned company that makes incredible and creative products, at very reasonable prices. I have a few of their products, and am really impressed. My favourite is “Nocturne,” which is actually a mineral powder that you’re supposed to wear at night…but I love it so much that I also wear it during the day. I have a lot of redness in my skin, as well as some teenager-flashback acne, but their products do a bang-up job in covering it all. Plus, the owner has a fantastic blog. Aromaleigh’s website is: aromaleigh.com

I use Everyday Minerals and am completely obsessed with it. A large jar of foundation (i don’t use much and it can last me 4-6 months) is $12 (US) and they have tons of colors and formulas for different skin types. I love all of their products, and they are all so inexpensive, and they have a sample kit to try out colors without having to commit to purchasing a full size. I also like the fact that they do not use bismuth oxychloride, which can clog your pores.

I am so glad I found this site!! I had been breaking out in a horrible rash around my mouth and between my eyes for the past month or so. I never thought it could be the new BE Matte foundation I had been using. But after stopping certain things that I usually use on my face (make-up wipes, lotions, etc), and still getting the rash, I googled “Rash from BE Matte” and sure enough, tons of people have had this same issue. I used to have flawless skin until using this stuff….thank GOODNESS I’ve found the cause and I can now move on to something new and better. Darn, I loved BE products, and never had issues with the non-matte version…but now I’m scared to even try that again. Been using that for years, perhaps I’ll give it one more try to see what happens…. But then again, I love make-up so this gives me the perfect excuse to buy more new make-up!! Thanks for letting me vent, good luck ladies!

Hi Angela, I’ve finally caught up with the rest of the world and discovered your fabulous blog! I LOVE it. I’ve always wanted to start up a blog of my own but have never had the courage but yours has inspired me to finally do it! Apologies if you’ve already covered this in a later post (I’m working my way through right from the start) but do you mind me asking what foundation you use? You’ve obviously trialled a few but I wondered what you settled on? Like so many other people have said, your skin looks amazing! Do you mind me also asking whether you still use the St Ives scrub morning and night? I read somewhere that it’s bad for you to over exfoliate but clearly it works so well for you! x
