Hey guys! Just a quick note to let you know I have added Renew, Refresh, Empower, and Awake Glo Bars to the Glo Bakery Store!

I finally have another product to review for Project Natural Glow!
I was sort of in a limbo phase where I hadn’t run out of any products, so I didn’t have to buy anything for a while. Don’t worry I have not forgotten about it though! I am still using up my old make-up, so I haven’t had to make any cosmetic purchases yet either!
Next up:
Bare Minerals i.d. Mineral Veil Powder
I actually purchased this in Summer 2008. I was a bride-to-be on a mission. After a few uses, I decided that I didn’t like it. It seemed a bit chalky to me. It ended up in the back of my make-up organizer and I never paid it much attention since!
That is until my tried and true powder ran out several weeks ago. I was faced with purchasing a new powder for Project Natural Glow or giving this stuff another try! And because I am in the ‘use up what I have’ mode, I dug it up and gave it another whirl.
The result??
The Mineral Veil was better than I remembered.
Once I got over that the texture wasn’t exactly the same as the powder I had been using, I actually liked this powder.
My only dislike about it is that it goes on a bit dry. However, I just read online that they have a new Hydrating Mineral Veil powder out now. I will have to check it out.
Here I am with the regular Mineral Veil powder on:
Zooming in…
This picture was taken with my point and shoot so the clarity isn’t great. In natural light, you can see the powder on my skin (unlike in the photo).
I am also dying to try the Bare Mineral Foundation! Amy gives a great demo of it:
Bare mineral products provide a SPF of 15. Because I didn’t know what most of the ingredients were, I looked them up on Skin Deep website. I was a bit surprised to find out that a couple of the ingredients are considered moderate to high risk.
1) Zea Mays Corn Starch
- Absorbs oil. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
2) Zinc Stearate
- I couldn’t find a description for this one. Low to moderate risk according to Skin Deep.
3) Magnesium Stearate
- Magnesium Stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
4) Methylparaben
- Methylparaben is the ester of methyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. High hazard according to Skin Deep.
5) Propylparaben
- Propylparaben is the ester of n-propyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Moderate hazard according to Skin Deep.
6) Iron Oxides
- Iron Oxides are inorganic compounds consisting of any one or combinations of synthetically prepared iron oxides. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
Unfortunately, I did not find an overall product review on bare Minerals by Skin Deep (only for individual ingredients). The individual ingredient ratings by Skin deep have made me wonder if some of the other mineral cosmetic companies offer better ingredients? Such as this mineral powder by Jane Iredale Cosmetics. It seems to contain less hazardous ingredients according to Skin Deep. None of the ingredients in the Jane Iredale loose powder have a hazard score over a 4. Now I’m not saying that every product I use has to be 100% natural and ‘safe’, but I figure if I am going to use a mineral powder, why not use the best one out there?
The Bare Mineral products are also on the expensive side, even though I admit they seem to last a very long time. I think there are other mineral companies that offer better prices though..

So let’s have a little girl talk today! ;)
I’m curious…
Have you tried Bare Mineral products? What do you think of them?
Do you use any other mineral products by other companies? What companies do you think are the best priced?
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
I’m getting my hair chopped this afternoon…can’t wait! Stay tuned for the before and after. :)
It is the trouble that never comes that causes the loss of sleep.

I use Bare Minerals Foundation (use it as concealer as well) and All Over Face Powder. I had the mineral veil, but it came without the inner top and lasted less than a month because it all spilled out! I like that it doesn’t seem to clog my pores, and you can adjust how much or how little coverage you want.
Great post Angela.
I just switched BC (went from the pill to Mirena) and my skin is freaking out due to the change in hormones. I have used Bare Minerals for about a year, and while I like the stuff okay – I really prefer to have a natural face and touch up with concealer, a little blush and mascara.
I notice that the skin around my jaw / chin has been especially touchy with the Bare Minerals foundation… I have to do a lot more preemptive work there with zit cream, pore strips, etc. to keep the pores clear. When I don’t wear the Bare Minerals foundation, I simply do not break out as much.
It’s tough because like Ange, I have very fair skin, and it can be hard to get that luminous look in the darkest days of winter – I get sooo pale!
Ange, thanks again for the review – I am curious about Jane Iredale Cosmetics. Anyone – any idea on where you can find that line in the States?
I use Bare Escentuals for everything! I LOVE IT ALL! :) My favorite product is Clear Radiance….that’s like GLO in a JAR! lol The luminosity and dewiness is amazing!
LOVE Bare Minerals! You MUST try out the All-Over Face Color in WARMTH. I swear by this; it’s a mix between a bronzer and a blush…I can wear it when I’m pale in the winter or tan in the summer and it’s ALWAYS the right color.
Are you sureeee its not going to be a fake before and after? You won’t get away with it this timee!
i didnt like bare minerals at all!! I started using an organic tinted moisturizer by physicians formula and i use a little mineral powder to cover up redness and such with the organic physicians formula mineral powder and then i use the redness relief powder from clinique… my skin is clearer, glowier (but not oily!!) and so much smoother.
Hi Angela! I love your site and I can’t wait to try some of your glo treats. Anywho, I use Bare Minerals and thanks for reminding me…I’m all out and need to hit a Sephora today. BM gives a pretty flawless & natural look. I have a bunch of friends who use it and since they’ve switched I’ve noticed a radiance in their skin that wasn’t there before. I used to use Sheer Cover, which is another mineral based make up. http://www.sheercover.com/
I actually liked this product more because it had better coverage, hid scars and even acted as a wrinkle filler! It got a little too pricey and it is mail order only. The company was charging me and sending me products before I had finished my old products. I had a stockpile, which wasn’t a bad thing but I was also getting ton of lotion (that I had to pay for to get the foundation). And this lotion was not all that great.
I’ve loved reading all the comments and after such a rave response over Jane Iredale products I am extremely interested!
I tried bare minerals but I was highly allergic to it. My face turned red and burned and itched. It was terrible. I had to exchange it and go back to my liquid foundation.
I think the product looks great on so many people, but I don’t agree with their marketing strategy in aiming it toward people with sensitive skin. When you are putting crushed up minerals and metalloids on your skin that aren’t necessarily FDA approved, there is a chance for all sorts of allergies. Once I noticed that I was allergic I googled “Bare Minerals” allergy and TONS of testimonials came up similar to mine.
I use Clinique Even Better foundation and like it quite a bit. I’m a cheapo though, so most of my other cosmetics come from the drug store :)
Glad you like it! Such a pretty glow!
Weird! I never knew that Bare Minerals contained “high risk” ingredients… I just know that all the products are vegan, with the exception of the brushes (which are made of goat & horse hair). I’ll have to look into these icky chemicals…
Anyway, I LOVE Bare Minerals, but I have never tried the mineral veil. I use their loose powder, blush, and eye shadows. I have also tried their mascara & eyeliners, but I found those chalky.
I have been using Bare Minerals for almost two years and I love it. It lasts FOREVER and it is so easy when traveling – especially with the new liquids laws. And it always looks great. Two of my best friends have both used it for their weddings and they looked flawless!
I have sensitive skin and Bare Minerals has worked really well for me (I’ve been using it for 2 years) but I don’t like how shiny it is – maybe the new matte formulation will fix this? And I don’t like seeing powder residue, which you do. Also, not thrilled with its skin deep ratings, although it seems to vary by product. Has anyone tried airbrush makeup?
I love Bare Minerals! They’ve not only helped cover up my bad skin – they’ve actually made it better.
I’ve never tried Bare Minerals, but I’ve been using FreshMinerals for a few years now. Im totally in love with it. I have super sensitive, super pale skin, so finding makeup has always been really hard for me. The only problem is that you can’t get it in Canada, and I’ve only ever been able to find it at Fred Meyer. But I live practically on top of the border, so I just stock up whenever Im in the states. Its completely worth the extra bit of effort.
I love Bare Minerals!! It’s the only makeup that truly provides great coverage that looks natural. I do think their makeup brushes make a huge difference though. The best part is how long the product lasts. I barely have to buy more than one foundation/year.
Hey girl,
You probably remember that I am a bareMinerals FREAK. I’ve tried just about every single mineral makeup that’s out there, though, and while I’m staying true to bareMinerals for when I have a lot of redness that needs covering up, I’ve moved on. I find that bareMinerals can be too heavy for all-over use, especially the foundation. And I’m not a huge fan of the Mineral Veil because I don’t think it does anything extra when coupled with another mineral pigment.
My new love is Jane Iredale: this stuff is GOOD. Dermatologists recommend it for burn victims because it’s so gentle. I get the pressed powder foundation and I think you might like it because it doesn’t give too much coverage (you have lovely skin without makeup) and it melts into your face quickly. I also love that it’s pressed powder, because it’s much cleaner to use than bareMinerals. The down-side is the price (about 40 bucks), but it comes with a refillable compact. When you use all of the powder, you toss the pan and keep the compact, so at least it’s sustainable.
My mineral makeup regimen is now: Jane Iredale tinted moisturizer all over, then the pressed mineral foundation on my t-zone and areas that need a little more evening out, followed by Laura Mercier cover-up on my (ahem) beauty marks, and finally Jane Iredale mineral blush. Sometimes I get extra redness around my nose, and I still use bareMinerals for that…but I’m phasing it out because Jane Iredale just looks so much more natural.
Anyhoo. Sorry for the long-winded comment. :) I’m just so OBSESSED with makeup, I can’t help myself!
Oh, and DEFINITELY try Everyday Minerals if you’re looking for powder – they’re just as good as bareMinerals. Another tip: get a small spray bottle and fill it with water. When you’re done applying your mineral makeup, spritz your face from about a foot away. It makes the make up look soooo much more natural (but be careful if you’ve got mascara on – I always save my lashes for last so I can do this).
One OTHER thing while I’m being verbose: my dermatologist and wedding makeup artist both agree that powder foundation is extremely drying for the skin, so if you get dry in the winter you might want to stick with creams and liquids until the summer rolls around. Otherwise you might break out because dry skin clogs your pores.
I apologize, I don’t have time to read the 102 other comments so this may have already been said. I have a bad reaction to the bismuth in Bare Minerals but I found another brand that does not have it and have been using it for 4 yrs now, Pure Skin Minerals. Here is a link: http://www.littlestuff4u.com/
I had a horrible reaction to Bare Minerals. Under my eyes got all red, rashy, itchy, dry, etc. It was so so painful and lasted about 2 weeks. I will NEVER touch that stuff again, which is sad because I really wanted to like it!!
I really like Bare Minerals when I first apply it – using the specialized brushes and whatnot it goes on easily and looks great BUT it never stays on…I feel it wears off way too soon for the price!
I wasn’t a huge fan of Bare Minerals when I first tried it because it made me break out so bad, but I am in love with the Bare Minerals Matte and the Mineral Veil. Neither one of them contain Bismuth Oxide. I also really like afterglow cosmetics which is a totally vegan company and I don’t believe they have any high risk elements.
