Hey guys! Just a quick note to let you know I have added Renew, Refresh, Empower, and Awake Glo Bars to the Glo Bakery Store!
~~~~
I finally have another product to review for Project Natural Glow!
I was sort of in a limbo phase where I hadn’t run out of any products, so I didn’t have to buy anything for a while. Don’t worry I have not forgotten about it though! I am still using up my old make-up, so I haven’t had to make any cosmetic purchases yet either!
Next up:
Bare Minerals i.d. Mineral Veil Powder
I actually purchased this in Summer 2008. I was a bride-to-be on a mission. After a few uses, I decided that I didn’t like it. It seemed a bit chalky to me. It ended up in the back of my make-up organizer and I never paid it much attention since!
That is until my tried and true powder ran out several weeks ago. I was faced with purchasing a new powder for Project Natural Glow or giving this stuff another try! And because I am in the ‘use up what I have’ mode, I dug it up and gave it another whirl.
The result??
The Mineral Veil was better than I remembered.
Once I got over that the texture wasn’t exactly the same as the powder I had been using, I actually liked this powder.
My only dislike about it is that it goes on a bit dry. However, I just read online that they have a new Hydrating Mineral Veil powder out now. I will have to check it out.
Here I am with the regular Mineral Veil powder on:
Zooming in…
This picture was taken with my point and shoot so the clarity isn’t great. In natural light, you can see the powder on my skin (unlike in the photo).
I am also dying to try the Bare Mineral Foundation! Amy gives a great demo of it:
Bare mineral products provide a SPF of 15. Because I didn’t know what most of the ingredients were, I looked them up on Skin Deep website. I was a bit surprised to find out that a couple of the ingredients are considered moderate to high risk.
1) Zea Mays Corn Starch
- Absorbs oil. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
2) Zinc Stearate
- I couldn’t find a description for this one. Low to moderate risk according to Skin Deep.
3) Magnesium Stearate
- Magnesium Stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
4) Methylparaben
- Methylparaben is the ester of methyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. High hazard according to Skin Deep.
5) Propylparaben
- Propylparaben is the ester of n-propyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Moderate hazard according to Skin Deep.
6) Iron Oxides
- Iron Oxides are inorganic compounds consisting of any one or combinations of synthetically prepared iron oxides. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
Unfortunately, I did not find an overall product review on bare Minerals by Skin Deep (only for individual ingredients). The individual ingredient ratings by Skin deep have made me wonder if some of the other mineral cosmetic companies offer better ingredients? Such as this mineral powder by Jane Iredale Cosmetics. It seems to contain less hazardous ingredients according to Skin Deep. None of the ingredients in the Jane Iredale loose powder have a hazard score over a 4. Now I’m not saying that every product I use has to be 100% natural and ‘safe’, but I figure if I am going to use a mineral powder, why not use the best one out there?
The Bare Mineral products are also on the expensive side, even though I admit they seem to last a very long time. I think there are other mineral companies that offer better prices though..
~~~
So let’s have a little girl talk today! ;)
I’m curious…
Have you tried Bare Mineral products? What do you think of them?
Do you use any other mineral products by other companies? What companies do you think are the best priced?
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
I’m getting my hair chopped this afternoon…can’t wait! Stay tuned for the before and after. :)
It is the trouble that never comes that causes the loss of sleep.

Hi Angela! I’ve been reading your blog for quite a long time, and I’ve never commented before but I feel like I need to on this entry. I really dislike Bare Minerals. I purchased a set a few years ago and after applying it to my face following the directions, my skin started to burn and itch within ten minutes of putting it on. I thought it was weird because it’s supposed to be good for everyone’s skin. I asked a few friends who wore it and they said they hadn’t had any problems with it. I didn’t use it again after that first time, and a few years later I went to an actual Bare Minerals store and had one of the women that worked there apply it. I thought maybe she would do it differently so that it wouldn’t itch. Within ten minutes the same thing happened again, and I asked her if my reaction was normal. She told me that she’d never heard of it happening before. I decided to do some research on the internet and found out that the ingredient in the foundation that caused the reaction is called Bismuth Oxychloride. It can cause sensitive skin to become irritated, and rashes to develop. Sorry I went on so long, but I really really dislike bare minerals. Good luck with finding a product you’re happy with!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bismuth
This is a mineral makeup that contains NO bismuth, is much cheaper than bare minerals, and I use it personally. It’s awesome. http://www.everydayminerals.com/
I totally agree. I am on an anti-Bare Mineral campaign (although I love the Buxom glosses). The foundation sample I tried made my face itch terribly (probably the bismuth). Their free sample brush was horrendous. The coverage was not buildable at all.
There’s much better stuff out there. Physicians Formula mineral wear talc-free loose powder is just as good as Bare Escentuals in my opinion, and much cheaper. Physicians Formula even has a pressed mineral powder that I like! Clinique has a new shave-off mineral powder with SPF 15 that is also good.
Oh, and my best friend was just “converted” from Bare Minerals to Sephora’s pressed mineral powder! She was a die-hard fan of Bare Minerals… until we got makeovers and the makeup artist used Sephora’s pressed mineral powder. Much less powdery looking, much more portable, and less expensive. She’s hooked.
I use bare minerals and I love it, although it is a bit drying. I just put on lotion right before I use it and when the lotion dries, I apply the foundation and that helps with my dry skin. I don’t have the best skin and it covers up the spots without feeling heavy and gross, like creams or other foundations I’ve tried.
I have to say, the high risk part worries me a bit, but I really don’t even know what it’s a risk of, haha.
I love Bare Minerals – I’ve found it gives me a very natural look, and feels really light.
I don’t like that it has a High Hazard ingredient though – and I never would have thought to look up the ingredients, I thought it was just ‘minerals’!
I’d be interested if anyone has a review of another mineral makeup… something to look into once I run out of Bare Minerals!
I’ve never tried any Bare Mineral products, but I have been wanting to for a while. I’m hoping when we make our trip back to the states (maybe in March) I can grab some then to try out.
They sell Bare Minerals at some Shoppers Drugmart locations in Canada, as well as Sephora! :)
oh wow I didnt know they had them at SHOPPERS!
some shoppers, the ones with larger beauty boutiques do carry the line
I started using bare minerals a few months ago and I do like it. I’ve only tried using the mineral veil over the loose powder foundation and warmth blush and am not really sure of any difference it makes. After I wash my face I put on coconut oil, so I haven’t had a problem with dryness and this makeup. That’s disappointing about the rating though!
I have never tried Bare Minerals products … but you look beautiful with it on – but then again, you always look beautiful!
I tried Bare Minerals, but it didn’t work for me at all. I have large pores and it made me look a little “textured”. Plus I had to put it on so thick in order to get the coverage I need that it felt like I had cake batter on my face! :) However, I put it on a friend with smaller pores, and it looked great. Probably perfect for girls who need just a bit of light coverage.
I’m really not sure if it will be able to hide my redness..I have a lot of red in my skin and need quite a bit of coverage. Maybe I can test it at Sephora..
im referring to the foundation that is!
I’ve never used bare minerals, but I have used a powder by philosophy that seems similar. I love it but have no idea how it scores on Skin Deep. However, I hardly every use it so I don’t know how much it matters compared to beauty products I use every day.
I have oily skin and I LOVE bare minerals. It makes my skin glow and both my sister and I have noticed an improvement in our complexion. (We both suffer from acne) At first I didnt like it because I felt like I was wearing a mask but the trick is to really make sure no excess in on the brush by taping it and only using a very little bit. A little goes a really long way. You should feel like you’re not using enough.
I’ve used Bare Minerals SPF foundation for a few months now, and while it was definitely great during the summer months, I do have to be a little more careful of the winter-dry-skin factor (fellow Ontarian!).
I’m also a little disappointed by the high hazard rating, though. Something to think about when I run out of my current stash.
(I also purchased their “Prime-Time” foundation primer and that seems to help quite a bit with preventing the “cakey” look that I always used to get from other foundations. It’s definitely worth the extra $$ to buy the primer, in my opinion)
oh I didnt know they had this…are the ingredients similar?
Hi Angela,
The ingredients for the Prime Time primer are: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone, Silica, Magnesium Silicate, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Extract. (from the Sephora website)
I have to say I’m a bit naive when it comes to the Skin Deep rating, but I have found that the primer really helps the foundation go on a lot smoother. Hope that helps!
Bare Minerals is all use!!!! It’s the only make up (for my face) I’ve ever actually used, and I love it. It’s so gentle on your skin, especially in comparison to some of that crap people will pay $100s for that just end up breaking you out in a rash!
The only thing you have to get used to is the whole loose powder thing… It can be a slight bit of a mess :)
I use bare minerals and I like them. I stocked up years ago and still haven’t ran out….I only wear makeup about once a month or so, so I imagine it will take me many more years till they are all done. I’m really happy with they way work. I put a layer of sunscreen moisturizer on and then apply the powder which eliminates any dryness I might see.
I have always been wanting to try Bare Minerals. I’m pretty sure Kath uses it and Jenna too? I might be wrong. Anyway when I did my “whats your one piece of make up you never leave the house with?” post a lot of ladies said Bare Minerals! Interesting that it works for some but not for others. I have been using Maybelline Mineral Powder and while it’s OK sometimes it does get a bit cakey. I find if I let my foundation set for a little bit before applying then it goes on nicer! That’s what the make up lady did for my wedding (let the foundation sit)… I never used to do that. Do you??
Here’s the powder i’m using atm:
http://static.busywithstyle.com/busywithstyle.com/imgname–maybelline_mineral_powder_love_it—50226711–maybelline.jpg
ohhh that is a good tip about ketting the foundation set…I never do that but I am going to try it out! Makes sense to let it dry…!
I love Everyday Minerals – it’s run by a mum who’s really into natural products (no nasty parabens, etc) and there is everything from eyeshadows to mineral foundations on the site. http://www.everydayminerals.com
It’s really, really cheap but the best foundation I’ve used as I have sensitive & red skin and it covers all the redness! With the dollar/euro exchange rate it’s so cheap for me to order over to Ireland from the USA. It’s only about $12 for a full sized foundation powder that lasts a few months, and you can also order samples to try the different shades.
I highly, highly recommend it!
I use and love Everyday Minerals as well (they are “rated” 1-3 on Skin Deep). They got me with the free sample kit;) and then i just got regular size products. I know Bare Minerals are getting all the hype but i started my mineral journey with Everyday Minerals (about a year ago) and I stick with it.
Ive heard from a TON of readers saying Everyday Minerals are awesome…I tried getting a free sample but I dont think they would send one to Canada?? Anywho this just makes me want to order some and take the plunge. I hate choosing shades though…
Everyday Minerals is a vegan company too! They have a ton of shades, too. They also have color-correcting mineral concealers, if you wanted to try one for your redness. They always have coupon codes and deals, so be sure to check the blog or the message board for them of you do order. I love everyday minerals, and it’s such a bargain.
and no bismuth oxychloride in EM!
I got the samples sent all the way to Dublin so they’ll definitely post ’em to Canada :)
they have so many offers and a lot of times I’ve gotten free samples with my orders – or free full size bronzers etc! Their kabuki brushes are cheap, animal-hair free and fab.
I write for a newspaper and last year I wanted to do a piece on EM, so I contacted them – and the lady who runs it contacted me herself, talk about great service.
Interesting info, I’ve used Bare Minerals for ages and never checked the ingredients! Good to know.
I LOVE bare minerals!! I do use the foundation powder over the mineral veil, and then dust the mineral veil over the foundation powder to help it “set.” It works like a charm and never looks chalky! I don’t think the mineral veil is made to be used on it’s own?
Ive heard that that technique that you mentioned is what the company suggests…
I can’t imagine using the veil on its’ own unless my skin was flawless which it is certainly not! I have to have foundation to even it out
I started using bare minerals last January and dont think I will ever go back to anything else. Other foundations cause me to break out but the bare minerals does not and it does not have a heavy feel on my skin. I love it!
I had the whole line of BM products. I loved how they made me look but after a couple weeks I started breaking out with cystic acne. It took a while for me to figure out what was going on but my cheeks would be sooo itchy and then I’d get super deep and painful pimples. Granted I have super super sensitive skin…I have to use free and clear laundry detergent and I can’t put anything with dimethicone on my face (ya for coconut oil!).
I believe it’s the Bismuth Oxychloride that made me break out…but I don’t think the BO is in the mineral veil…just the foundations.
hmm that is interesting…I have heard that the BO (lol) can be very irritating. I wonder if the other companies use it?
Ya it was definitely a bummer…I ended up giving the whole collection to a co-worker (lucky her).
I look at the ingredients of everything I put on my face now…the bismuth oxychloride and any kind of silicone leave me quite limited.
I use Physician’s Formula Organic Wear pressed powder. I don’t love how it looks on my face but it’s better than pimples plus it’s relatively cheap.
I have used bare Minerals before – I am obsessed with makeup so I have used just about everything. I didn’t like how everything was in a powder, it caused a huge mess for me. I am much more of a Mac and Urban Decay fan.
I love Bare Minerals! Also, the dermatologist told me its a very good option if you have any complexion “issues,” so my 16 year old daughter loves it as well. I’d be interested in what the risks of the high risk ingredients are too.
Love your blog!
I’m a bare minerals convert… it took a while to get it right.
Its important to use the primer, foundation AND mineral veil together.
The combination of those 3 are perfect. Flawless skin!
I have blotchy/dry yet oily skin (if thats even possible) and since starting to use the Bare Minerals Trio I get compliments on my skin all the time.
I suggest picking up the starter kit. You get 2 types of foundation, the primer, the mineral veil, the warmth shade and 3 brushes. The brushes also aid in the product going on flawlessly.
Give it another try. You will love it!
I agree,
I thought it was important to use the primer, foundation and mineral veil all together! I thought the mineral veil is JUST the finishing touch to the whole process. I could be wrong, though!
Great tip!!!
The mineral veil should be lightly applied all over your face once all the other products have been applied.
Yes!! The starter kit has EVERYTHING you’d need and an instruction video too!! Definetly a good idea!!! It seemed expensive to me (maybe around $75) but it has lasted me over a year and I use it daily!!
