Hey guys! Just a quick note to let you know I have added Renew, Refresh, Empower, and Awake Glo Bars to the Glo Bakery Store!

I finally have another product to review for Project Natural Glow!
I was sort of in a limbo phase where I hadn’t run out of any products, so I didn’t have to buy anything for a while. Don’t worry I have not forgotten about it though! I am still using up my old make-up, so I haven’t had to make any cosmetic purchases yet either!
Next up:
Bare Minerals i.d. Mineral Veil Powder
I actually purchased this in Summer 2008. I was a bride-to-be on a mission. After a few uses, I decided that I didn’t like it. It seemed a bit chalky to me. It ended up in the back of my make-up organizer and I never paid it much attention since!
That is until my tried and true powder ran out several weeks ago. I was faced with purchasing a new powder for Project Natural Glow or giving this stuff another try! And because I am in the ‘use up what I have’ mode, I dug it up and gave it another whirl.
The result??
The Mineral Veil was better than I remembered.
Once I got over that the texture wasn’t exactly the same as the powder I had been using, I actually liked this powder.
My only dislike about it is that it goes on a bit dry. However, I just read online that they have a new Hydrating Mineral Veil powder out now. I will have to check it out.
Here I am with the regular Mineral Veil powder on:
Zooming in…
This picture was taken with my point and shoot so the clarity isn’t great. In natural light, you can see the powder on my skin (unlike in the photo).
I am also dying to try the Bare Mineral Foundation! Amy gives a great demo of it:
Bare mineral products provide a SPF of 15. Because I didn’t know what most of the ingredients were, I looked them up on Skin Deep website. I was a bit surprised to find out that a couple of the ingredients are considered moderate to high risk.
1) Zea Mays Corn Starch
- Absorbs oil. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
2) Zinc Stearate
- I couldn’t find a description for this one. Low to moderate risk according to Skin Deep.
3) Magnesium Stearate
- Magnesium Stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
4) Methylparaben
- Methylparaben is the ester of methyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. High hazard according to Skin Deep.
5) Propylparaben
- Propylparaben is the ester of n-propyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Moderate hazard according to Skin Deep.
6) Iron Oxides
- Iron Oxides are inorganic compounds consisting of any one or combinations of synthetically prepared iron oxides. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
Unfortunately, I did not find an overall product review on bare Minerals by Skin Deep (only for individual ingredients). The individual ingredient ratings by Skin deep have made me wonder if some of the other mineral cosmetic companies offer better ingredients? Such as this mineral powder by Jane Iredale Cosmetics. It seems to contain less hazardous ingredients according to Skin Deep. None of the ingredients in the Jane Iredale loose powder have a hazard score over a 4. Now I’m not saying that every product I use has to be 100% natural and ‘safe’, but I figure if I am going to use a mineral powder, why not use the best one out there?
The Bare Mineral products are also on the expensive side, even though I admit they seem to last a very long time. I think there are other mineral companies that offer better prices though..

So let’s have a little girl talk today! ;)
I’m curious…
Have you tried Bare Mineral products? What do you think of them?
Do you use any other mineral products by other companies? What companies do you think are the best priced?
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
I’m getting my hair chopped this afternoon…can’t wait! Stay tuned for the before and after. :)
It is the trouble that never comes that causes the loss of sleep.

I have been using the BARE NATURALE from L’Oreal for about a year and a half – just the foundation, I don’t both with powder, as the foundation is in powder form. My skin has been pretty darn flawless since I have started using it! I use a tiny bit of concealer under my eyes or if I have the odd blemish, but other then that, the Bare Naturale is all I use! It has SPF 19 in it also so I know my face always has sun protection! I get compliments all the time from random strangers on how nice my skin looks when I wear it!
I am not very good at make up, but one thing I use everyday is a bronzer. I was using a brand recommended to me at Sephora (I think it was Cargo cosmetics), but then I found the Skin Deep website and decided to take a look at some alternatives. Found a brand called Mineral Fusion at Whole Foods and have been pretty happy with their products (though at $35 for a small bronzer compact it is a little pricey) and they don’t have any of the ingredients you mentioned in your blog. Having said that, they are not featured in the Skin Deep database.

Angela, the mineral veil is supposed to be the final touch once all the other bare minerals products have been applied (foundation, warmth (bronzer), etc.) per the Starter Kit instructional video. Maybe this is why you haven’t liked it as much. I have an odd story about my experience with Bare Minerals. I used the Starter Kit for almost a year and then one day I put on the make-up and had a horrible allergic reaction. Within seconds, my face became unbearably itchy, red and blotchy, and swollen. I immediately rushed to the bathroom and washed the make-up off and my face calmed down within an hour. I did not use any new soap, moisturizer, etc. that could have reacted with the product. I have tried to use the make-up again and the same reaction occurred. Has anyone else had an allergic reaction after first using the product with no problems?
I also had an allergic reaction although mine was not quite as severe. I just got these weird bumps on my face. I’d accumulate one or two each time I wore the makeup. I stopped using it after a week and all the bumps went away a few days later. I was disappointed because I loved the way the makeup looked. I’m using a Clinque powder makeup now with the Bare Minerals Warmth and it works together for me. No more bumps…but it doesn’t have quite the same glow.
Bare Minerals is one of the best make up out there – especially for the price. Mineral Veil is almost like the concealer, not the ‘foundation’ you’re supposed to put on first.
I have tried bare minerals a few years back and I just found that it was too drying for my skin. But lately i’ve been using a lot of blotting papers-so maybe ill give mineral powder another try!
Also, the hazard risk is a concern for me, I’ve been searching for a good base that is healthy as well. So if you come across one let me know =)
Have a great day!
I’ve been using the Bare Minerals foundation & mineral veil for just over 6 months and I love them! I do have to pre-conceal the giant circles under my eyes, but they are seriously dark. :P
loveee bare minerals! have been using it for about 3 years now :) ange! I found a skin care line from Canada that is organic and amazinggggggg! check it out on my blog post today, i think you will love it!!
Mineral make up was not such a huge thing a few years ago so I had to wait until my first trip to the States to pick up some Bare Minerals stuff – I got the lightest starter kit, and I think it was worth it alone for the brushes! Since then I’ve tried lots of different mineral make up and there’s none that is my particular Holy Grail. Like you I have a lot of make up to use up so I’m not really buying a lot of products at the moemnt. the last mineral make up I bought on the net was from Pure Luxe Cosmetics. She has such an amazing selection of shades for both foundation and eye colour. On my most recent trip to the States (yeah, SUCH a jetsetter) I picked up some Physicians Formula and NYC mineral mineral foundation, I’m a total fiend for cheap drugstore brands, especially ones I can’t get in Ireland. Not sure how natural their credentials are though (would imagine not very!)
I love bare minerals as well! It’s soooo easy and quick to put on and you never have to worry about that “line” of different colors some foundations leave you between your chin and neck. I guess my oiler skin comes in handy sometime because it doesn’t dry out my skin, so I would say just put on lotion beforehand and see if that helps. The mineral veil is supposed to be put on after the foundation so that may help too.
i used bare minerals for awhile and my face would get red, itchy and irritated in the summer, if i sweat at all, the combination of the moisture and my skin and the bismuth oxychloride would give me a terrible rash. i’ve read it happening to other people too online.
i’ve been using everyday minerals, which ranks 1-3 on the skin deep website and its CHEAPER than bare minerals, which is another bonus, they’re baby kabuki brush is waaay better than the bare minerals one.
i’ve also been really liking Perfekt skin foundation (which rates a 2 on the skin deep site), its like a primer and powder in one, it doesn’t provide much coverage which i like, and very natural looking. the only downside is that its a bit pricey at sephora, but they have a to-go size that is much more affordable, and a little goes a long way
also, everyday minerals has a free sample promo, so you can try out a few shades for free, all you pay is shipping, so you can find your perfect shade.
Jane Iredale is 150% better then Bare Minerals. I adore all their products.
Bare Minerals sucks in comparison. I’ve been wearing Jane for the past 5 years and wouldn’t change a thing. Every product on their line is fantastic.
I use Pure Pressed Base in Warm Sienna. It’s 20 SPF and it stays on. I’ll apply at 7am and reapply at 6 or so if I’m going out. It evens out my skin tone and hides any blemishes. I rarely break out now that I’ve been using this product steadily.
Give it a try!
Will have to check it out!
I checked out the website but didn’t find prices. Is Jane Iredale makeup pretty pricey?
Thanks!
Somewhat, but it lasts.
I also don’t wear makeup every day unlike some. There is a link on the main website where you can buy direct. All the prices are listed on it.
I have been using Bare Minerals for about 3 years now. I like it because I have oily skin. But I am not partial to it and would be willing to try a different powder make-up foundation. One thing I do know is that I will never go back to liquid makeup after using the powders.
I might have to check out Jane Iredale when I run out of my current stock of Bare Minerals!
I’ve never tried Bare Minerals, but I use http://www.alimapure.com/ cosmetics :) I LOVE IT. Not sure what the rating is….
(Looked it up: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/brand/Alima_Pure/ )
They range from ratings 1 – 3.
I haven’t tried Bare Minerals (though I can say I’ve been tempted!) but I don’t think it would be a good match for me…my skin dries out VERY easily…so powders of any kind are sort of out of the question for me. I always use a LIGHT foundation and I moisturize my skin like crazy…especially in the winter, and whenever seasons change. If the air changes…my skin freaks. Joy. haha
I’ve tried it and found it okay but, was concerned by the rating like you. Then I tried 24/7 found at CVS and like it as much. It’s less expensive too. Plus got a better rating and recommendation.
Hey Angela! I tried Bare Minerals once at the BE store. The lady there did my make up to see how I would like it and it turned out that I am allergic to it. Once she finished, my skin got soooo itchy and red, it was awful!
For my part, I’m all about MAC… You should give a try to their mineralize skinfinish! Very good – just like everything from MAC ;).
I have been using Bare Minerals for years and I really like it. I have the foundation, the mineral veil and an all-over face color called Glee that is really a great, natural looking pink. Now that winter is coming, I want to try their hydrating mineral veil.
One thing that I have noticed is that the makeup looks better after a few hours on your face. Right after you put it on, your skin looks flawless – it really does cover redness – but it can look a bit mask-like. But then after a little bit of time, it seems to settle into the skin and look more natural. That has been my experience anyway!
I rarely ever wear makeup but my two older sisters and my mom (and I believe my aunt as well) all wear bare minerals and love it. I’d rather go out in my own skin rather than wear makeup daily and risk wearing things that will mess it up in the long run. (plus, it scares me away from make up when I see girls that wear makeup daily and do a HORRIBLE job putting it on)
