Hey guys! Just a quick note to let you know I have added Renew, Refresh, Empower, and Awake Glo Bars to the Glo Bakery Store!

I finally have another product to review for Project Natural Glow!
I was sort of in a limbo phase where I hadn’t run out of any products, so I didn’t have to buy anything for a while. Don’t worry I have not forgotten about it though! I am still using up my old make-up, so I haven’t had to make any cosmetic purchases yet either!
Next up:
Bare Minerals i.d. Mineral Veil Powder
I actually purchased this in Summer 2008. I was a bride-to-be on a mission. After a few uses, I decided that I didn’t like it. It seemed a bit chalky to me. It ended up in the back of my make-up organizer and I never paid it much attention since!
That is until my tried and true powder ran out several weeks ago. I was faced with purchasing a new powder for Project Natural Glow or giving this stuff another try! And because I am in the ‘use up what I have’ mode, I dug it up and gave it another whirl.
The result??
The Mineral Veil was better than I remembered.
Once I got over that the texture wasn’t exactly the same as the powder I had been using, I actually liked this powder.
My only dislike about it is that it goes on a bit dry. However, I just read online that they have a new Hydrating Mineral Veil powder out now. I will have to check it out.
Here I am with the regular Mineral Veil powder on:
Zooming in…
This picture was taken with my point and shoot so the clarity isn’t great. In natural light, you can see the powder on my skin (unlike in the photo).
I am also dying to try the Bare Mineral Foundation! Amy gives a great demo of it:
Bare mineral products provide a SPF of 15. Because I didn’t know what most of the ingredients were, I looked them up on Skin Deep website. I was a bit surprised to find out that a couple of the ingredients are considered moderate to high risk.
1) Zea Mays Corn Starch
- Absorbs oil. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
2) Zinc Stearate
- I couldn’t find a description for this one. Low to moderate risk according to Skin Deep.
3) Magnesium Stearate
- Magnesium Stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
4) Methylparaben
- Methylparaben is the ester of methyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. High hazard according to Skin Deep.
5) Propylparaben
- Propylparaben is the ester of n-propyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Moderate hazard according to Skin Deep.
6) Iron Oxides
- Iron Oxides are inorganic compounds consisting of any one or combinations of synthetically prepared iron oxides. Low hazard according to Skin Deep.
Unfortunately, I did not find an overall product review on bare Minerals by Skin Deep (only for individual ingredients). The individual ingredient ratings by Skin deep have made me wonder if some of the other mineral cosmetic companies offer better ingredients? Such as this mineral powder by Jane Iredale Cosmetics. It seems to contain less hazardous ingredients according to Skin Deep. None of the ingredients in the Jane Iredale loose powder have a hazard score over a 4. Now I’m not saying that every product I use has to be 100% natural and ‘safe’, but I figure if I am going to use a mineral powder, why not use the best one out there?
The Bare Mineral products are also on the expensive side, even though I admit they seem to last a very long time. I think there are other mineral companies that offer better prices though..

So let’s have a little girl talk today! ;)
I’m curious…
Have you tried Bare Mineral products? What do you think of them?
Do you use any other mineral products by other companies? What companies do you think are the best priced?
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
I’m getting my hair chopped this afternoon…can’t wait! Stay tuned for the before and after. :)

I have been using bare minerals for awhile. I don’t use any other make-up. I think it’s healthier for the skin. I don’t have as many breakouts as before when I used liquid foundation. I am not good at make-up stuff, so bare minerals is fast and easy!
I LOVE bare minerals, and I got most of family to start using it! They don’t do much advertising on TV, and I think that it became popular through word of mouth. I have two different types of moisturizers that I use- one for warmer months, one for colder months. I haven’t had a problem with it drying out my face for that reason. It covers up all of my imperfections on my face and feels so light! I hate cakey make-up! The first time I used it though, the make-up artist at the store put WAY too much on. After I got the make-up home and used it myself, it was perfect!! It is a little messy especially when you are used to running late and having to put it on in the car while your husband drives! :)
I’ve never tried that, but I have some friends who like it. I really hate foundation or anything too intense on my face, plus I have MEGA sensitive skin (Rosacea) so while it’s not natural, I LOVE the Aveeno Ultra Calming line of products. It’s done wonders for my skin. I like the face wash, day lotion with SPF, and night cream. In terms of powder, I use Physicians Formula bronzer and Cover Girl powder for my stupid always red nose :)
I love Bare Minerals…been using it since 2006. They are expensive, definitely, but you’re right, they last a long time. I didn’t know about the high hazard ingredients or inorganic compounds, though…that’s really something to think about…
I use Bare Minerals exclusively because my mom is a bit obsessed and buys all the products and sends them to my sister and I (super lucky). She bought me a foundation starter kit and the actual foundation lasted me 11 months! The foundation is usually around $25 USD but if you can make it last almost a year its worth it. I really enjoy the eye shadows as well and they last even longer!
Also, the mineral veil is so super fine its intended to be used with a very fine brush so it won’t be too chalky on your face. It took me awhile to realize this and I finally broke down and bought a specific brush to use with it and it worked wonders!
Thank you for taking the time to look up the ingredients because it is something I’ve been meaning to do but clearly never made it important enough to actually follow through. I am a bit concerned with the ingredients list because I am an avid environmentalist and I hate when companies advertise being “all natural” or “paraben free” when they clearly aren’t. I may check out Everday Minerals per other readers’ comments once I run out of what I have now.
That is a great tip about using a fine brush…my brush is clearly not that, so perhaps this is my problemo!
I love my Bare minerals products. They feel so lightweight and natural. Although now i’m worried about the ingredients.
I have been using Bare Minerals for over two years now, and I love it! It’s much easier to control the coverage than with a liquid foundation. And since I have oily skin, this doesn’t contribute anymore oil. My skin has definitely cleared up since I started using it.
I adore bare minerals! I never really switched for a health reason, so I don’t really know much about any of their ingredients. A friend gave me the color in her 2 set that she didn’t need b/c she thought it would be a good fit for me and after she did my makeup that night, I fell in love with the products, they way they look and got so many compliments, way more than with my old foundation. I have converted my entire makeup collection to their products over the past years. I use the Prime Time foundation primer, which I’d highly advise – it really helps make the powders go on better.
I use bare minerals too. I really like it. At first I did not like it. I was ready to take it back, but I talked myself into giving it another try. I love how it covers lightly but does the trick. I don’t know too much about natural products and what high risk really even means…but I like it so far!!
PS…. I GOT the glow bars on Tuesday! I am LOVE LOVE LOVING THEM! I just finished eating one! I wish I lived next store to you so I didn’t have to pay for shipping! SO great!! thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed!!! =)
maybe this is a really dumb question, but moderate to high risk for what? Eeeek!
I was using Bare Minerals and just decided that I liked my old makeup better. I am trying to use more natural products but I like my makeup and have not found a natural one that gives me the right coverage.
Ange – I would assume you have already confirmed the magnesium stearate in Bare Minerals is from a vegetable source? Most mag stear comes from cute lil moo cows!
I have never tried Bare Minerals, but my sister has used it in the past and liked it. I found this company: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5879562 and I really want to try her products. It looks like her products are completely free of all the yucky stuff and man does she have a fantastic selection of colors! Plus, her prices seem pretty fair. One of these days I’ll finally buckle down and order something as I am quickly running out of one of my old standby products. Thanks for the great post!
I’m definitely going to order some of her products…they are fairly inexpensive so what’s to lose!
Has anyone tried her makeup?
bare minerals used to be the only product i used (for foundation, anyway), but their colors no longer match my face for some reason. i’ve started using MAC’s mineral makeup and i LOVE IT. i never used the mineral veil over my foundation bc i didn’t really think it made a difference. but now i use MAC’s prep and prime translucent finishing powder and it’s amazing. it just brings your whole look together and makes your skin look more finished.
I use Mineral Wear Talc-Free loose powder. I really like it. And I think I got it at Target and it lasts quite a while. Maybe it was ~$10? I go through maybe 2 a year?
Looks like it got a 6 out of 10 on Skin Deep though. :-(

I love love love bare excentuals! I’ve been using it for about 4 years. I have sensitive skin but also experience breakouts from time to time. I’ve found it to be the only makeup that doesn’t aggravate my skin!! I’ve found that it stays on better if I use the bare escentuals primer along with the makeup. I also had the same problem of the powder being visible on my skin, so I tried doing lighter layers of the makeup instead of one layer and it helped a lot.
They do have a new foundation out called bare minerals matte, I know it’s available at sephora and at the bare excentuals stores. It has less ingredients/more natural ingredients then the original! (at least that’s what I heard at the store). I haven’t bought the matte yet, but a few of my friends have and are loving it!
PS: I just wanted to say that I love your blog! I started reading about 3 months ago, right before I took my boards to be an RD. It was something I looked forward to during intense days of studying! Your A Year Can Change A Lot posts really inspired me. I’ve been having a difficult time finding a job and I was starting to get really upset about it. Those posts inspired me to do little things every day to help along the way until I get there! Thank you so much! Keep up the good work :)
I LOVE Bare Minerals. I use it instead of Glo which has more high risk components. I use the bronzer, concealer and eye brightner. I think it is the best option for my oily skin. My only complaint is that it transfers onto clothes easily! Which is a big pain who wants a bronzer ring on their white shirt? But all in all I like and haven’t found a better alternative.
I use Bare Minerals as well – buy the starter kit as it comes with everything you need to get started AND all of the brushes (which last forever!!).
The result you get from the system does not look like the result of any other foundation I’ve ever tried – so at first it might look “funny”. Also, give it at least 5 minutes to “melt” into your skin/pores before you make a decision whether you like it or not. If it has a funny texture on your skin or looks like clay, you put way too much on – watch an instructional video online or something if you’re not sure how much to put on. I don’t know a single person who has tried Bare Minerals and NOT liked it – it is a miracle makeup for someone like me with sensitive skin!
I fall in and out of love with Bare Minerals, mostly because I am someone who gets bored with what I am using and enticed by new and different products…LOL. I like the foundation for light coverage, and it definitely doesn’t make me break out like regular foundation. In the winter, I find it can make my skin feel dry, also, so I tend to use it more in the summer. Also, for a more polished look, I prefer liquid foundation. The products from that line that I adore, though, are the warmth (which I use as a bronzer…a tiny bit goes a LONG way, so very economical),and the eye shadows. I always have a problem with creasing, but these eye shadows last all day, with no creasing. They are awesome and come in tons of colors! These also last forever because they are highly pigmented. I like Bare Minerals on the whole, but they may not be worth all the hype. There are lots of products out there that do just as good of a job.
I love Bare Minerals. I don’t normally wear foundation, only for special occasions, and times when I want to look my best, like interviews. However, BM is the only stuff I’ll use. It never comes off, and I don’t feel it on my face. The colors blend really well, and I never get the line near my chin and neck. I have a full line of their stuff from blush to eye shadows, mascaras and lip gloss and lipstick and love it all. Their brushes are also fantastic!
I don’t use Mineral Veil as foundation, but I use it when I am done with my face, right before putting mascara on, to set the makeup. It really works!
