Words Of Wisdom

November 6, 2010

Good morning!

Last night the contestants of Project Food Blog received some startling news that I thought I would fill you in on.

Foodbuzz has granted Project Food Blog contestants a 1-week extension for the video because there were music copyright issues with some videos that were submitted. We were notified of this last night and the video was originally due November 7th (tomorrow). Now the videos are not due until November 14th and the voting will not commence until November 15th.

Despite the extension, I can assure you I will be posting my video by tomorrow at 6pm EST, as originally planned! I have worked my butt off for two weeks on this video and I fully intend on posting it when it was originally due. Keep your eyes peeled for my video late tomorrow afternoon. I’m pumped!

I thought I would share with you one of my favourite quotes this morning. :)

I have this up on my wall and I read it over when I need a boost and a reminder of what is truly important in life. As nerdy as this sounds, several parts of this quote actually bring tears to my eyes. I hope you will enjoy it too. There are also plenty of videos on You Tube of this quote if you are interested.

"Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you imagine.

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you. Sing. Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours. Floss. Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch. Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone. Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either
– your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body, use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.
.

Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them. Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you should hold on.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young."

Wow, I love this quote. Love the part about the race only being against yourself in the end – that is so true. And the parts about getting to know your parents… I don’t even want to think of the day mine are gone. This actually gave me chills. I think I’m going to print it out and put it above my desk in our den.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for good.

That part really resonated with me, I’m still young (22) and live at home and my parents are very strict (still). Everyone always wonders why I can’t just lie about my whereabouts or tell them to screw off when they don’t want me to go somewhere or do something but I think of the bigger picture. I want a good relationship with them. This quote will definitely stick with me when I’m struggling to remember why!

“Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life”
I can totally relate to that. I’m 20 and in my third year of university, and I’m still confused about what I truly want to do. Sometimes I feel like I’m supposed to have it all mapped out by now, but I know that life is unpredictable, and that it will figure itself out at the right time. Everythings gonna be alright :)

Looking forward to the video! You always give 100% so I’m sure it will be incredible!

I think it’s a GOOD thing that I don’t know what I want to do with my life.. I am only 21 and I have not really experienced much of anything :)

“don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours”

THIS, because it’s a lesson it took me a while to learn, but it’s also one of the best things I’ve learnt. Some people you just have to let go of, so that you can hold on to others that much more.

What ever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.

Celebrate everyone’s successes, including your own, but move on from failure and accept it as something you weren’t meant to do and get excited that there are other things you were meant to do!

I heard the song version of this the other day on the radio and forgot how much wisdom is in it. I love the “sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.” It’s a good reminder that there is no “race”, just a journey with yourself. Thanks for posting this :)

I can’t get that out of my mind. It’s such good advice and makes me realize how safe I often play things. Being scared isn’t bad, it’s part of being alive.

I also love this quote! Great post!

“Enjoy your body, use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own..”

I have definately learned in the past year how powerful the human body is!

I love the Sunscreen song and video. It moves me to tears. However, Luhrmann didn’t write it.. He wrote the music. Mary Schmich is the one who gave this speech.

Wasn’t that made into a spoken-word song? I remember they kept playing it at high school graduations. I LOVE it. It brings a tear to my eye.

Most of this quote speaks to me. I used to love this song too.

Especially the ending. It’s so key to have that friendship with your siblings and to have those friendships where you make the effort… making friends can get harder and harder as you get older, or at least making those close lifelong friendships can be. I just really like this quote.

“The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind”
I used to be very socially anxious. I used to overthink situations, and worry about the future. I felt like every second I spent without direction was time I was wasting that I could have been doing something important; I could have been missing out on my life. I realize now that life is long, and that everything will even out regardless of how little I obsess over my choices. And the less I berate myself when I’m indecisive, the more I can find the joy in those times rather than waiting on some perfect future.

I LOVE that quote and read it often too! I was just thinking it would make a great print for the guest bathroom…something good to read than the typical mags :)

Wow, that’s a great quote. There are so many good points I almost want to just post it on my wall too!

‘Enjoy your body, use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own..’

It’s so obvious but so hard to remember.

the quote about worrying and family speaks to me. i think i trained myself to think if i worried about things they would work out, but it wasn’t the worrying per se but the actions i took to succeed in whatever i was doing. i am aware of that now and the fact that worrying is useless, however, i still work on it. 92% of the things we worry about never happen and its so true that the real troubles blindside you. as i get older i appreciate the r/s with my family so much and am grateful everyday to be so connected with them. thank you for this beautiful quote. love it!! looking forward to your video.
