Good Morning everyone!
I need to be quick this morning because my mother in Law is taking me shopping to a wholesaler to buy some bakery packaging! So I will get right into something that has been on my mind.
My Yoga Confession
As you may know I have been trying the free yoga classes from Yoga Today.com. I love the idea of the website- a ton of free 1 hour videos to choose from. It is like having your own personal yoga collection at the touch of your hand.
I have been trying these videos on and off before the injury, a tiny bit during the injury, and now after the injury.
And. I just. can’t. get. into. these. videos.
I started to think this week that maybe Yoga and I were not meant to click. Maybe I was one of those people who just couldn’t ‘get it’. I was starting to doubt my pursuits.
For whatever reason the Yoga Today videos are so slow to me. I have to skip through the first 10 mins. because it bores me to tears. The instructors also annoy me too. And I mean this in the nicest way possible of course. They say things like ‘far out’ and ‘groovy’.
Enter comment from the wonderful Maggie from Say Yes To Salad . Her comment last night changed my world. She referred me to her ‘Yoga’ page on her website where she has put together a wonderful wealth of yoga resources at the touch of your fingertips! How did I not see this before?
Anyways, she wrote some interesting things…
“The classes that I’ve found on Yoga Today have generally been a slower and calmer form of yoga. Even the Ashtanga classes (normally faster paced) have been slower than I’m used to.”
Bam! Now I am not saying that I am some yoga black belt or anything, because I am not. You would know this by simply looking at me. Or if you saw my downward dog. However, what I have realized is that I need a constant change in stimulation to stay content. Yoga Today doesn’t do this for me and I am glad to know I am not the only one! Maggie recommends the Yoga Downloads as well as the You Tube videos here. I must say I am a bit scared to do an audio yoga video, which is why I have never taken the leap and tried Yoga Downloads. I am going to give it a go though and take a leap of faith!
A few others recommended Yoga Downloads too, so thank you all for your advice!
Here I am last night in my office for some winding down. Lights out. Candles lit. Far Out.
I also tried Bryan Kest’s Power Yoga DVD last night. I have only tried the first section called Energize…but I couldn’t get into it. I think I was defeated after the 15 mins. of Yoga Today that I did just beforehand.
Has anyone else found certain Yoga videos/instructors to be too slow? Do you have a favourite instructor?
Well guys, I am off to make a Green Monster and then off to shop for bakery packaging this morning! See you this afternoon! :)
“If you have made mistakes, there is always another chance for you. You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down.” ~ Mary Pickford
i know this is awful, but i tried yoga once and wont do it again. its so boring to me! if im in workout clothes, i want to sweat and burn some calories. thats just my mindset, i know its bad.
Man maybe I should start filming myself teaching my yoga classes. Sounds like I could make a killing lol. Or maybe I’d just be nice and offer them for free on my blog…hmmmm, something to think about.
i am with you! Most yoga bored me to tears and I wanted a workout for spending that much time at something. You may want to try Bikrams yoga. It is expensive but so worth it. It is practiced in a hot room and is intense. your heart rate will go up and you will SWEAT! you will also get an awesome stretch. They have Bikram studios throughout Canada and the world. I looked up on the website and they have two in Toronto.
You must try Moksha Yoga! There several in Ontario (maybe one is close to you?!). http://www.mokshayoga.ca/studios.htm
I know you are trying to make to budget cut backs but this is really worth it.
I can walk to Moksha Yoga here in Montreal and I would sacrifice A LOT from my already tight budget to go to Moksha. I just did a 8 Day Challenge to prepare for their official 30 Day Moksha Yoga Challenge.
Of course it all depends on if you really want to do this at home or if you are willing to go so a studio.
Anyways, I love your blog. I read you everyday and I am always looking forward to your next post. Thanks for sharing.
Ah! I know what you are talking about! I’ve only done the yoga today videos, and a few yoga/pilates classes on campus and I found they were soooo slow and boring. Yoga just never clicked with me. I have a hard time getting into it and taking it seriously. Plus, some of the poses hurt because I’m not used to them! I would like to stretch more, so it’s something I should give another shot. I’ll check out those yoga resources, thanks!! :)
I like Dawnelle on yogadownload and I love Sadie Nardini (the one with the youtube videos). And Tom Morley (he has a free video with Comcast On Demand Exercise TV).
I absolutely LOVE your blog!! Just discovered a new fitness video website. Most videos are free, but you can pay for larger resolution and no ads. Check it out: http://www.beyou.tv/exercise-videos/yoga-videos
I totally agree. I have been trying and trying to calm myself down enough to enjoy yoga, but my mind just does not sit still! I so prefer an intense cardio workout, but I too am trying to expand my workouts. I am still “auditioning” videos, and have not found any I like yet except my very first MTV power yoga video from years ago. It has fast paced music, and moves very quickly. I actually enjoy that one. Let us know if you discover a dvd worth getting!
Angela,
You must try Yogadownload. I find their sessions SO serene and inward focused compared to watching someone on the screen. And they are very specific and descriptive about the movement and poses so you will not get lose. Try Power Yoga #3 (Jackie) first and then get Power Vinyasa #2 (Dawnelle) when you’re ready. That one is my favorite!

I know a lot of people love yoga but I get way too bored! I’m also the type of person that gets bored with a lot of different ways to work out, so it could just be me. Put me on an elliptical for 15 minutes and I’m bored, even while watching TV. I love exercising outdoors though – I can easily go for hour long walks and love every minute of it!
I do wish I could get into yoga since I know it’s great for posture, flexibility and toning. Good luck finding some more interesting vids!
I didn’t like those either! It was wayyy to slow!
I recommend Sarah Ivanhoe’s Yoga Makeover series. VeggieGirl told me about them and I’m hooked!
i always hated yoga because it seemed slow and boring and the classes that i went to made me uncomfortable. now i’m hooked on the audio classes from yogadownloads. i love the runners and cyclists classes best, but some of the power vinyasa sessions are good too. i also enjoy the gentle hatha and lunar flow for more of a meditation type relaxation/stretch.
jackie is my favorite instructor.
Im a lurker…but Tom Morley. I’m the same way as you and even yogadownloads bother me because there isn’t a video rather a pose sheet which – reading, listening, and trying to manipulate my body – NO WAY! (talk about injury…) anyways, i found this one on TV and just found it online – i really like it. Let me know what you think!

I love Denise Austin’s Yoga Body Burn!! Its pretty quick paced (for yoga) and has 20 minutes of total body, 10 minutes of abs, 10 mins of legs and 10 mins of slower relaxation. I love that I can mix and match what I feel like doing!
This may sound like a silly comment but if you don’t enjoy yoga….then don’t do yoga. And don’t feel guilty about it!
It is possible that you just haven’t found an instructor or type of yoga that you click with. Keep trying and definitely go to a studio, it’s the best way to get into it. But if after all this trial and error, it’s ok to say “this is not for me.” I know so many people whose healthy lifestyles motivate them to want to do all things healthy, but it’s ok to pick and choose. You don’t have to do something just because it’s good for you. You should do activities that you enjoy!
Hi Angela,
LOVE YOUR SITE! Recently become way addicted!
I’m like you a little with yoga too, when it’s slow I get sooooo bored and want movement etc. One excellent DVD I have come across is by MTV called MTV Power Yoga. It’s fast and great, and you build up more of a cardio sweat etc. It began my love with power yoga (but still not slow, regular yoga, boring!). Definitely give that a go or more of the Ashtanga styles of yoga.
Keep up the amazing work!
xoxo
I’m a yoga beginner and only do it on occassion, but I love Yoga Downloads. The audio isn’t annoying and the pdf of poses is enough guidance if you don’t know the positions (which really helps me). Give it a try!
Hey Ang! Try yoga to the people–and let me know what you think! You can find audio recordings to follow on their website or on youtube. Good luck! I know good yoga classes are hard to come by! ;)
This post has created a lot of interest. Doing yoga may not look attractive in the young days, but its effectiveness can be felt after say age beyond 40 years when you may like to be fit without doing much effort by the way of sweating and strenuous workout. Any yoga which can do good to you all is good!
