Good afternoon health lovers! :)
Oh boy I think I totally jinxed myself this morning when I talked about strong runs! My run today was anything but strong! I felt weak. I think it was because I had such an intense evening workout last night. Still, I tried my best to re-fuel my carbs before the run- I had two blueberry muffins and 2 servings of Mary’s Crackers! I thought forsure that would do the trick but I just felt quite blah on my run. Not hungry by any means, just blah! I hate when that happens.
It was also super windy outside so I felt like I couldn’t run very fast at all! Then I remembered some running advice I read the other day on Hal Hidgon’s website. He said that long runs should be done at a much slower pace (often 11:30 minute miles or slower) than your shorter runs. This helped me realize that I was doing something good for my body and not ‘failing’ myself. Long runs tend to be anything over 3-4 miles. Since I planned for a 5 miler today I took it nice and slow. To be honest it was a nice relief not to have to worry about my pace! Plus I had Eric by my side so we chatted away anyways. :) My route also included a couple huge hills so I just took it very slow on those today.
If there is one thing I have learned from my injury this past winter it is to always always listen to your body!
The workout:
- Duration: 55 mins
- Distance: 4.77 miles (close enough!)
- Max heart rate: 153 bpm
- Avg heart rate: 137 bpm
- Avg pace: 11:37 min/mile
It was a nice leisurely ‘jog’ although I just wished I hadn’t felt so blah because the weather is so gorgeous! I guess I will have to remember not to have intense workouts the night before a planned AM run!
Today’s question: How do you space out your runs? Do you follow a set routine?
Our Money Tree has really taken off the past couple of weeks! Maybe it is a sign?? :)
After my run I had a lovely green monster:
Ingredients:
- 1 serving tofu
- 1 cup Almond milk
- 3 cups spinach
- 1 T almond butter
- 1/2 banana
- ice
The star of my lunch today is my new Ruth’s Hemp Balsamic Dressing!
Very low in fat and loaded with all natural ingredients! The sodium is also very low for a salad dressing!! The Kraft one I normally use is 190 mg of NA for 1 T.
This dressing is SO good!!!! GAH!!!! I need to learn how to make it! lol
I am doing shots of Apple Cider Vinegar!
I tried it yesterday in my smoothie and the smoothie was AWFUL- please don’t make my mistake!
Now I just do two ‘shots’ each day with food (about 2 tsp per shot). I actually don’t mind the taste all too much. Don’t get me wrong I don’t love it, but it’s not that bad. :) I also use my Kyolic garlic in my green monster’s in the morning and then I do 1/2 tsp at night!
Eric thinks I am bonkers! But what else is new :)
My tea box is so much fun!!!
This is a new tea that I am loving:
Today’s lunch was veggie packed:
- 1 heart of organic PC romaine
- 1 cup wheatberries (I’m still using these up!)
- 1/2 tomato
- 1 T ground flax
- Ruth’s Hemp Dressing
With about 2 cups of my new PC frozen veggie mix and balsamic:
It was probably the best frozen veggie mix I have ever had!! WOW! PC you have outdone yourself!!!
My belly is really happy right now :)
And now for the exciting news I got!!
- The Race Director for the Niagara Wine Country run that I am participating in has asked me to sell my Glo Bakery Goodies during the post-race festivities! How awesome is that?! I admit I freaked out a bit because I have never done something like this before and I am still waiting to hear about the details on how it would work.
- I am worried that I won’t be able to bake enough- the race is going to have thousands of runners/spectators!!! I also don’t have any promo materials except for my business cards yet. Eek!
- I am thinking about baking my best power muffins and cookies. I don’t want to bring anything that may melt in a hot sun (e.g., cupcakes or raw food!).
- Any other ideas?? :)

Congratulations!!!
Hi Angela! Love your site, and mega-congrats on the Glo Bakery deal for the race! That’s fantastic.
Just a quick note: I don’t know much about the apple cider vinegar stuff, but I do know it has to be raw or unpasteurized or some such thing (like Bragg’s) for all the beneficial enzymes to be there. I’m not sure if the Heinz jug I see there fits that description. Like I said, not an expert, but this is what I’ve heard. I’m actually going to give it a try this week!
You are right and I do believe Heinz is a pasturized brand! Of course it has to be the cheap stuff! lol. I’ll have to check out the brands in the organic section of my grocery store.~A
I need to get myself a tea box, we drink quite a bit of tea and I’d much rather them be in a tea box all together then in the individual boxes their in now.
I made a new batch of salad dressing yesterday and swapped out my usual white vinegar for apple cider vinegar all thanks to your post! It was different and still totally yummy!
I usually run 4 days a week. I try not to run more than 2 days in a row because by the 3rd day my legs are definitely tired and my pace is noticeably slower too.
For me, I’ve recently figured out that carbs from green veggies give me WAY more energy than carbs from grains. Gotta love those green monsters! ;)
Terrific news! You could invest in a very large cooler (like what you usually keep beverages in), and put some ice packs in it along with your bars, etc., so that nothing gets to “squashy” in the sun. Look forward to hearing how it goes!!
Congrats on your chance to sell your goodies at the race!
As far as promo goes, have you thought about handing out flyers? I love flyers, they’re usually packed with more info then the average business card, which really tickles my curiosity further about the business. Just giving some info the Glo Bakery and what you sell (bonus points if it has some yummy picture examples of the food you make!) would really coax me into checking out the Glo Bakery if I was at the race and totally oblivious to OSG & the Glo Bakery. :0 Just a suggestion!!
Seriously cool about the Wine Country Run/Glo Bakery opportunity. I’d say cookies, bars and muffins would hold up well….at least you will get your name out there:)
I tried my first Green Monster today and it was AMAZING. I’ll be experimenting with lots of different things but um…no apple cider..ick!
:)
Happy Sat!
Barbara
congrats on the business opportunity, OSG!!
Awesome news. I agree about the flyers it would be an easy way to get your name out there!
That is so exciting! I was thinking that I would eat a million of your amazing looking donuts after a race. I don’t know if they would hold up well to the sun or not? But, yes, definitely do the power muffins and cookies. Those are great refueling/recovery foods!
That is an awesome business opportunity, wow!
Hi,
I like reading your site as I am a transplanted Canadian living in LA.
One thing about race expos – and I have been to dozen and dozens of them – samples really work. You put out the plate of samples and give out the swap with your logo and website on it. So even if the people don’t buy at the expo they’ll have something in their swap bag to remember Glow bakery and its products.
Make sure you find out what containers/handling issues are permissable for the expo for the samples. (are gloves necessary for the chopper of the treats etc).
Cliff always has a booth at races and it just sets plates of the new flavours out there for people to take on their own.
Just my thoughts….
Great job on the site…
Sue
I usually wait 24 hours between workouts, otherwise I get too worn out! The only time I ever injure myself is when I’m tired and push myself too hard. You were smart to take it easy :)
That is an awesome opportunity! Will you have time to print up a glossy flyer of sorts? Just a one-pager describing your business. I bet a lot of people at the race will LOVE the idea, but you won’t have time to tell every person about it.
Good to know about the PC mix! I have the Asian mix and love it :)
CONGRATSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS that is so awesome! you’re totally going to be famous- I just know it ;) What about like a whole wheat soft pretzel? People always like a little salt after something like that?
Thank you everyone for your support!!! :) I love all your suggestions! ~A
I use apple cider vinegar as a dressing on my fruity salads, I love it!
Congrats on the exciting Glo Bakery news!
When I was training for my half marathon, I did “long runs” (generally over 6 miles) every weekend. Other than that, one medium run (4-6) and one short run (2-3) during the week.
You’re doing great! You’re not overdoing it, which can be the worst thing for ambitious runners.
CONGRATS!!! That is SOOO exciting for you! That’s definitely going to generate a lot of publicity for the Glo Bakery! :D
My advice would be to start baking as soon as possible… freeze items that still taste good thawed and get as much prepping done beforehand so you can focus on the baking when the time comes. Also, remember who you are catering to! Power muffins sound great, and you might want to make some of your granola bars as well! Runner are going to want power fuel and something that isn’t going to get their hands mticky! Stay away from messy goods, melting goods, or items that are difficult to eat while on the go.
GOOD LUCK! :D
Loving the green smoothie today. I seriously want to try out that EXACT recipe! ;)
that’s amazing news!! How about your Glo Bars??
Just a quick tip on the apple cider vinegar thing. You might want to combine it with some water and drink it. This is the suggested way of doing it because they say that the shots can take a toll on your teeth enamel and wear it down. I love ACV, so glad you’ve started to use it!
I was wondering about that..Ive also heard that sipping on it gradually throughout the day is better because the enzymes are released continually rather than all at once! ~A
How about little baggies of granola to sell at the race? Tie them up with a ribbon and attach your business cards using a hole-punch. I know whatever you do will be great!
LOVE IT!!!!! ~A
