I never thought I’d say this, but I’m in the final days of finishing my cookbook manuscript and handing it in to my editor. After 15 months of testing recipes, writing, and shooting photography, I finally feel like things are coming together. Very, very slowly, mind you. I’ve shot about 50 recipe photographs so far, but that means I still have at least 50 recipes to remake and photograph. gulp, gulp, gulp. I’ve heard the editing process is pretty brutal, so I’m just taking it one day at a time and not looking too far ahead. The journey of getting my recipes to a place where I’m happy (and all my recipe testers) has taken much longer than I anticipated, but I didn’t want to rush the process. Quality over quantity, I say. If this is the only cookbook I ever write, I want it to be something I’m proud of. And seriously, it might be the only cookbook I ever write!
Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say hello! I might not be able to post as much as I’d like to over the next couple weeks, but just know that I’m thinking of you always and looking forward to sharing some recipe inspiration as soon as I can. Right now, every creative cell in my body seems to be on hiatus, but it will recharge soon enough. Isn’t that what red wine is for??
Now for the giveaway fun! In my mind, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good cookbook and feeling more inspired with each turning page. Today’s giveaway highlights a couple awesome vegan cookbooks that I have in my collection as well as my favourite recipe creation tool that I reviewed recently – The Flavor Bible! I’m giving away all the books below to one lucky winner. If you happen to already own one or some of these cookbooks, I’ll be happy to send you an Amazon gift card instead. You decide. The books will be shipped new directly from Amazon.
In this giveaway:
Let Them Eat Vegan by Dreena Burton
Let Them Eat Vegan! is packed with 200 plant-powered recipes for the entire family. Dreena offers notes on how to modify her recipes for those with allergies or common substitution questions. Natural vegan ingredients are abundant in her recipes, many of which I already have in my own pantry. See my full review here.
Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero
Veganomicon is truly a work of art. With over 250 recipes for any occasion, this is a cookbook I turn to often. Whether you’re in the mood for something quick and easy or something fancy and elaborate, this book will have it. There are also handy user-friendly guides for soy-free, gluten-free, low-fat, and quick and easy recipes.
The Flavor Bible by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg
The Flavor Bible, described as “the essential guide to culinary creativity”, profiles ingredients and the corresponding herbs, spices, seasonings, etc. that pair well with each of these ingredients. As someone who has grown to love recipe creation, this book is a resource tool that I turn to when I’m looking for a nudge in the right direction. When I have an ingredient in mind that I’d like to cook with, I often look to this book for suggestions of other “compatible” ingredients that I can include in the dish. For my full review, see here.

I’m using Indian vegetarian cooking by Yamuna Devi. Vegetarian Indian for the gourmet, I bought this massive cooking bible 23 years ago and it has been my go to book for all things spicey. These days I’m mostly eating vegan, but there’s still plenty to choose from and lots of recipes are easily adaptable to being non dairy.
I read gone girl and couldn’t put it down! So good.
Currently reading “Meals that Heal Inflammation” by Julie Daniluk.
An amazing read, and a great repertoire of anti-inflammatory recipes (some vegan!)
What a great giveaway, and I can’t wait for your cookbook! :) I just bought a copy of The Voluptuous Vegan — I haven’t made anything yet, but the recipes sound delicious! Sadly, I’ve been too busy to read much fiction lately, but I’m really looking forward to Marisha Pessl’s second novel (Night Film) coming out this summer.
Also, I follow you on Pinterest. :)
Congrats on the new cookbook – I can’t wait to see it!! Your blog and recipes have quickly become a favorite of mine and I’m on here almost every week looking up new recipes to make for the coming week. My carnivore husband, eats-like-a-bird son, and super-picky other son all LOVE your food – as do I :) So thank you!!
I’m currently re-reading CLEAN – a cleansing program I try to do twice a year by Dr. Alejandro Junger. Wonderful way to recalibrate and balance my body after a long, cold, dreary winter!
Cheers,
Ingrid
Love your site! Have been reading “The Okinawa Program” lots of great recipes and very practical ‘balanced’ approach to long term health.
To health and Happiness!!!
I’m currently reading The Kind Life by Alicia Silverstone as I have been trying to transition to eating little to no animal products in my diet! Congrats on the cookbook- I already love the recipes on your blog and look forward to the new ones in your book!!
I am currently reading “Veganist: Lose Weight, Get Healthy, Change the World” by Kathy Freston, as well as “Food for Thought” by Steven F. Sapontzis. I particularily am enjoying the latter, as it discusses the ethics and implications of eating meat.
One of the life changing books I read was by Caldwell Esselstyn called
Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. Everyone who criticizes
vegetarianism should read this book. It saved my life, and I am
now a vegan for so many reasons. The precious animals
top of that list.
Thank you for your amazing website and inspiration.
Chris

I’m currently reading The Great Gatsby (can’t wait for the movie) and Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman (amazing book!!).
I already follow you on pinterest but I “liked” your facebook page!
Unfortunately, my reading typically revolves around grad school–basically anything related to Marriage and Family Therapy. I would love to add some vegan cook books to the mix though! :)
I’m reading Eat & Run by Scott Jurek. As a runner I’d been toying with the idea of going vegan for awhile and then after receiving Crazy Sexy Kitchen for Christmas I decided on some more serious experimentation. I’d found Eat & Run at our local neighborhood library box and between his recipes and finding you via a search the transition is going well. I feel like the way I made the change was really similar to Scott, it was gradual and never forced. Awesome book. Highly recommend if you haven’t read it yet.
Also, thanks for the great site! Your recipes have so much flavor! Can’t wait for the cookbook!
Re-reading The Great Gatsby before the movie comes out!
I am presently reading every kitchen design book and magazine that I can find, as I struggle with how to redesign my U-shaped kitchen.
I am currently reading the cookbook, “The Happy Herbivore”. It is full of awesome low-fat vegan recipes, some of my favorite being the scones and tofu scramble!
