I never thought I’d say this, but I’m in the final days of finishing my cookbook manuscript and handing it in to my editor. After 15 months of testing recipes, writing, and shooting photography, I finally feel like things are coming together. Very, very slowly, mind you. I’ve shot about 50 recipe photographs so far, but that means I still have at least 50 recipes to remake and photograph. gulp, gulp, gulp. I’ve heard the editing process is pretty brutal, so I’m just taking it one day at a time and not looking too far ahead. The journey of getting my recipes to a place where I’m happy (and all my recipe testers) has taken much longer than I anticipated, but I didn’t want to rush the process. Quality over quantity, I say. If this is the only cookbook I ever write, I want it to be something I’m proud of. And seriously, it might be the only cookbook I ever write!
Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say hello! I might not be able to post as much as I’d like to over the next couple weeks, but just know that I’m thinking of you always and looking forward to sharing some recipe inspiration as soon as I can. Right now, every creative cell in my body seems to be on hiatus, but it will recharge soon enough. Isn’t that what red wine is for??
Now for the giveaway fun! In my mind, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good cookbook and feeling more inspired with each turning page. Today’s giveaway highlights a couple awesome vegan cookbooks that I have in my collection as well as my favourite recipe creation tool that I reviewed recently – The Flavor Bible! I’m giving away all the books below to one lucky winner. If you happen to already own one or some of these cookbooks, I’ll be happy to send you an Amazon gift card instead. You decide. The books will be shipped new directly from Amazon.
In this giveaway:
Let Them Eat Vegan by Dreena Burton
Let Them Eat Vegan! is packed with 200 plant-powered recipes for the entire family. Dreena offers notes on how to modify her recipes for those with allergies or common substitution questions. Natural vegan ingredients are abundant in her recipes, many of which I already have in my own pantry. See my full review here.
Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero
Veganomicon is truly a work of art. With over 250 recipes for any occasion, this is a cookbook I turn to often. Whether you’re in the mood for something quick and easy or something fancy and elaborate, this book will have it. There are also handy user-friendly guides for soy-free, gluten-free, low-fat, and quick and easy recipes.
The Flavor Bible by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg
The Flavor Bible, described as “the essential guide to culinary creativity”, profiles ingredients and the corresponding herbs, spices, seasonings, etc. that pair well with each of these ingredients. As someone who has grown to love recipe creation, this book is a resource tool that I turn to when I’m looking for a nudge in the right direction. When I have an ingredient in mind that I’d like to cook with, I often look to this book for suggestions of other “compatible” ingredients that I can include in the dish. For my full review, see here.

In terms of cookbooks I have been using the aptly titles Cut Out The Crap books. I have developed a severe lactose intolerance and these dairy free recipes are making life a whole lot better. I am starting to bake vegan and these books look like they would be a real blessing to our family.
I just finished “Nobody’s Angel” by Jack Clark, a taxi driver in Chicago. It was really illuminating and I learned so much about my beautiful city. Not all of it was good, but it was a fun read!
I would really LOVE to have these cookbooks! I adore vegan cooking, it’s made my days much warmer and my life feel more together. Every time I get a new cookbook, it inspires me to keep going despite the extra time & effort it takes to be vegan.
Thanks for all of your wonderful posts! Your recipes truly are my favorite, and I can’t wait for your cookbook to come out.
I am rereading “Slammed” by collen hoover.. the next book in the series comes out in a week!!!
I just finished the cutest and sweetest book. Summr at Tiffays is a memoir about two young girls in the 1940s that escape to NYC one summer to find work and end up at Tiffanys. It was a perfect bedtime book!
I just finished 3 cups of tea by Greg Mortenson – Amazing book based on a true story!
Hi Angela! Best of luck to you on your cookbook. You should know I regularly crave your veggie burgers :) Put those on a pretzel bun and it’s GAME ON for this girl!
I am currently re-reading the “Flowers in the Attic” series by V.C. Andrews. I read them all years ago in college and recently picked it up to go at it again, and I am currently on the second novel. I like them because it’s a very, “Oh my gosh, what’s going to happen next!?!?” kind of series. I am sure your local library has them on hand, you should check them out :) Again, best of luck to you from here in the States, and VEGGIE POWER!
Congratulations! I am reading Let Them Eat Vegan and Peaceful parents, happy kids. I would love these books!
I’m still pretty new to being vegan–I’ve only been vegan for about 2 months now! Although I’ve been vegetarian for about 4 years, being vegan has been quite the learning process and your blog has been helping me immensely the whole way through! It would be wonderful to try these cookbooks to help guide me as I learn the ways of vegans!
Right now I’m reading “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hypothyroidism” but I flip through my cookbooks just about every day. Nothing beats finding a new recipe – especially when you share it with someone that had no idea that vegan food is awesomely tasty!
I just got an iPad, so I’m enjoying catching up on some magazine reading with the app, Next Issue. Book wise, the next one I plan to dive into is Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore.
I just finished the book True Refuge, by Tara Brach. It was such a treat to pick up and read a few pages; always beautifully insightful and significant. I would recommend it to anyone seeking to quiet their minds and to find refuge in the heart.
I do not have many good cookbooks – mostly use the net so would LOVE these – esp Dreena’s book and Isa’s book. Currently reading ‘I Know This Much is True” by Wally Lamb. An older book but very good.
Made your banana protein bars – I loved them! Unfortunately my family does not like banana flavor in things other than banana bread so I wondered if I could sub applesauce for some/all of the banana? I wasn’t sure since banana is thicker. What do you think?
I am reading Digestive Wellness by Elizabeth Lipski.
Hi Angela!!
I’m reading my 4th Jack Kerouac novel, “The Dharma Bums” and I love it! I also recently finished “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. I’ve learned a lot from both of them.
Keep up the amazing work! (:
Yes please I would enjoy these cookbooks…the last book I read that really enjoyed was The Help
I’m currently reading Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace.
I love cookbooks, but I have to say that Oh She Glows has become my go-to source for vegan recipes. What did I do before I discovered butternut squash black bean burritos and your green monster and pumpkin gingerbread smoothies?? lol
Right now I am reading Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone (to my 6 year old) in the evenings. I also just starting reading The Edison Gene which so far is a really interesting book about ADHD.
I’m a theory junkie so right now I am reading Touching Feeling: Affect, Pedagogy, Performativity by Eve Sedgwick. I also just finished Mad for Foucault by Lynne Huffer which was kind of amazing. Food wise, it’s been anything by Isa Chandra Moskowitz!
I follow on twitter & facebook too :)
I just finished the Cure for Everything by Timothy Caulfield – a very interesting read by a public health expert from Edmonton :)
