Red for Canada Day

Shortly after dinner last night, I enjoyed a small bowl of some new So Delicious frozen dessert that we picked up at the grocery store. I don’t usually buy frozen dessert unless I need it for a special dessert for a group (otherwise I just make Banana Soft Serve!). Normally, I buy Coconut Bliss frozen dessert, but the only problem is that it’s very expensive for a tiny container (around $7-8). Last night I opted for this new soy-based kind because it’s twice the size and a few dollars cheaper.


Not even 5 minutes after having a small bowl (maybe half a cup?), I immediately knew something was wrong. The centre of my face started to burn and I walked over to a mirror and my face was the deepest shade of red I’ve ever seen! I felt like I just got the worst sunburn of my life. The redness quickly spread down my neck, shoulders, chest, and arms, and I knew something I ate was not happy in my body!

Eric gave me a Benadryl pill and we headed for the hospital. I was burning up so I brought an ice pack with me in the car and held it on my red arms. My throat felt like it was a bit swollen and my voice sounded like I had a bit of a cold and I was worried that it would get worse. We waited for about an hour at the ER and then I was brought into see the nurse to get my vitals checked out. Everything was fine and a little while later my body just completely returned to normal, except for my throat which was still a bit sore and a lingering headache. The ER was absolutely packed (with over 5 hour wait time), so we decided to head home now that my reaction had subsided. This morning I woke up with a slight headache, but other than that I feel fine.

The only new food I can think that I had yesterday was this frozen dessert. Everything else I ate was stuff I normally eat every day.

When I got home, I checked out the ingredient list:


I looked up Chicory Root Extract and apparently it can cause reactions in some people. I wonder if it was that? I also had no idea that the product may contain traces amounts of tree nuts, dairy protein, and peanuts! I know my sister had a really bad reaction to pine nuts before, but I can’t imagine there would be much in that tiny bowl I had. I also had an allergy test a couple years ago and everything came back negative. Could it be the Chicory Root or maybe something else? Has anyone else ever experienced a reaction like that? I was just thankful I didn’t break out into hives!

hope you’re feeling better Angela…I try to stay away from the ‘ice creams’ as well, banana soft serve is just so much better and doesn’t make me feel gross either!

I was just meaning since she hasn’t had consumed a lot of random ingredients like ‘soy, dairy protien or chicory root’ her body might be more sensitive to it now than it used to be. It wasn’t meant to be rude. I’m all for vegan and vegetarian diets.

Angela please go get tested super soon. The first time I ate star fruit this happened to me, same with seafood. The second time I went to hospital in an ambulance cause I had stopped breathing. I carry an epi pen with me at all times now. The point is that often allergies are mild the first time you notice them and they get worse with every exposure. In the meantime if you think you are getting a reaction again go straight to a hospital, dont wait to see what happens. We love you too much!

I’ve had a similar reaction to Niacin, aside from the sore throat. I didn’t see that in the ingredient list, but perhaps there is niacin in one of the listed ingredients. It opens up your capillaries and causes blood to rush to the surface of your skin. It feels like a sunburn and gave me stomach cramps.

I’m so happy to hear that you are a-okay after that reaction! I myself am not familiar with Chicory Root but I def. think that could be the culprit.

A story for you (because this week, apparently, I’m all about leaving super long comments on blogs.)

One summer, years ago, I was bit by a spider that caused a serious allergic reaction. I was at my parents house alone, waiting for them to arrive, and I had to walk through the forresty side yard to get to the back door to get in. The little bugger [hardy har har] bit my pinky toe, and not 5 minutes after I sat down inside I had a smiliar reaction to you. My skin was bright red, and oh so feverish. It was the most terrifying experience, mostly because I was there alone. I called my parents who were on their way, and informed them of what was going on. I took a Benadryl and changed into loose fitting clothing, and tried to relax, but it started getting worse and my throat started to close. I called them again, in a panic, and my mom instructed me I needed to call 911. I was so scared, it was ridiculous. I tried to convince my mom that she should call from the car, and she told me to stop being so silly and “put my big girl panties on.” ha.

My parents arrived just 2 minutes before the ambulance. [did I mention it was my little brother’s birthday party, and they were returning with two cars filled with children? ha.] The EMT stuck me with my brothers epi-pen just as I stopped breathing and needed to be jumped back to life and given oxygen. [yeah. awesome side show for the children.] I was taken to the hospital, and stayed there for a while as they tested my bite and made sure I wasn’t going to die. I was then given steriods to take for four weeks [hello weight gain].

In case you were wondering, because I sure was, I have tried several times over the years that followed to spit web out of my wrists a la Spiderman, but no dice. So much for my budding romance with Peter Parker. Or James Franco. I did recently climb up onto a roof in heels and dress, though – so maybe I do still have a chance at becoming SpiderGirl, after all.

I had an allergic reaction last week to the gastroenteritis virus! I had no idea THAT could happen. We thought for days about if it was something I ate, or the medicine I was taking. I’m set up for an allergy test soon, just to be safe. I had to get an Epi Pen and everything because I broke out in such terrible hives and rashes and my throat also swelled and was getting worse. I was going blue by the time I got into emerg… needless to say, I skipped the wait. I’m peachy now though, absolutely fine! What an unexpected reaction though. I hope you figure out what it was that caused your reaction!

Hi, this is my first post… I have been a ‘lurker’ for like a month and this is my go to blog now for recipes, inspiration, everything :) I have been scared to post up to now because I didn’t want to put anything stupid :/ But when I read about the allergic reaction I thought I would leave and comment. Firstly, I am glad you were alright and nothing serious has come of it. Secondly, last August I just finished a 10k run and as I head to get a shower my throat closed up quite tightly and I did unfortunately have Hives everywhere (some the size of golf balls) I got rushed to the hospital and they gave me some strong anti-histamines and kept me there for a few hours to check me out. They couldn’t decide what caused it and examined my diet, washing powder, soap and shampoo use and all the other things that could have triggered it.
Long story short, after loads of test it turned out I had urticaria and angiodema. I am 18 years old and have no known allergies, but apparently it is not uncommon to just develop urticaria in a very short space of time. Maybe you could look into that.
I live in the UK but HAPPY CANADA DAY!!! :) I hope you have a great time celebrating it :D

I have strange reactions to chicory root — but not like you did. I get extreme stomach cramping and gas like you wouldn’t believe! I won’t eat anything with that in it. It isn’t worth it!

I bought this exact stuff last week and have been slowly, cautiously, making my way though it.
For me, with chicory root extract, it makes my stomach feel like it’s doing summersaults and it makes crazy digestive noises – haha, not pretty, I know.
Chicory root is sketchy to me. It’s primarily used as a fiber additive. Here’s something I found on reactons:

And second, I’m sorry about your scare with the soy ice cream. I have really bad allergies too, and once was whisked away by ambulance after drinking a carrot-celery juice. [Strange, I know.] I also have a soy allergy, which is sometimes worse and sometimes better…could it have been the soy?

At any rate, it’s so scary to have an allergic reaction to something and not know what it was from. Glad you’re feeling better.

I have soy products now and then so I dont think its that, but I guess an allergy can always develop later on in life. I will have to get tested again!

That is so scary Angela! I had an allergic reaction once to a lotion that I had used all over my arms, chest, back, etc. Within ten minutes of putting it on, I was bright red, splotchy and had hives all over the places that I had put the lotion on (so basically my entire torso and arms). I never did figure out exactly what it was that caused the reaction and certainly never used that lotion again. I’m so glad your reaction was short lived.

I have a friend who had a similar reaction to a protein shake from Starbucks; she visited an allergist and it turned out Chickory Root was the culprit. It shows up in a lot of protein bars and shakes.

oh, wow scary stuff. Glad you’re ok. I have a ton of allergies and have tested positive for peanuts and soy multiple times yet I’ve never had a reaction to them (i eat both frequently). It’s really weird and I’m freaked out that one day my body is just going to react and I’ll be somewhere remote!

So scary!! Glad you’re doing better. For my body, Chicory Root is the devil. But for me, it results in doubled over stomach cramps, like can’t stand upright kind of cramping. So yeah, it’s on my “list of things to avoid”. I hope you figure out what caused it.

Yikes! Glad you’re doing okay! I have a reaction to Chicory Root Extract as well but mine is more gastronomical. My stomach swells and gets really uncomfortable. A lot better than potential airway being cut off though!

Congratulations on the magazine feature!
I can’t imagine why SOY Delicious would allow themselves to be exposed to non-vegan dairy, which may be your problem, although other vegans I know trying animal products just get problems in their digestive cycles.
I don’t buy vegan ice creams for the smae reason-them being two expensive.

I’ve seen chicory root extract on so many lists of ingredients. I never knew it was a common problem for people. Although, you might want to double-think everything you ate yesterday (I’m sure you’re probably still doing this) because it seems like most people just get stomach problems when they react to it. Your reaction was so extreme, that it makes me think it might be from something else. But I’m not a doctor, so who am I to say? Maybe you’re just extremely sensitive to it. Anyway, I’m glad you’re better, and at least now you know to beware! I don’t like soy ice creams anyway. Coconut Bliss might be more expensive, but if you’re going to buy a vegan ice cream, it’s worth the splurge in my opinion!

I’m almost completely sure that you’re having a reaction to processed food, as such a large proportion of your diet (if not all???) is natural and whole-foods based. I recently posted about having the exact same symptoms as you (plus hives!) after eating tofutti vegan cheese, and indeed I’ve experienced the same thing whenever I’ve eaten any ‘fake’ food, from vegan soy ice-cream to ‘cheeses’ to seitan. I also eat more tofu than you do, and you could well be reacting to the soy as well as the uber-processed, sugary food. My diet is nowhere near as clean as yours and I still can’t tolerate vegan replacements for dairy foods (other than rice/hemp/coconut milk), so I think that might well be the reason why you can’t too.

Allergic reactions are scary! Glad you’re okay!
I have been a “lurker” until now but I love your blog have been reading it every day for a couple months. You have taught me so much and are a positive inspiration! I just had to respond to this one because it reinforces what you say all the time about eating REAL WHOLE food without all these crazy ingredients which no one really knows what they are and what effects they have on the body. Xantham gum and soy lecithin are on my questionable list too, and they are found in so many things! Do you know anything about these?

Now that I have been cooking a whole lot more (thanks to you!), I find that I don’t want to eat pre-made or processed foods that much anymore, and when I eat out, I think to myself, “I could make something that tastes soooo much better at home!!” :-)

Glad you’re okay! Allergies are always scary. My doctor told me that I was allergic to eggs, dairy, beef and peanuts (weird mix, I know) and ever since then I’ve stayed away from those foods. It’s just odd because my entire life I ate peanuts until I went to this doctor! I’m going to hopefully go back soon and see if all of these allergies are still there.

Hi Ange,
You should have your allergy tests done again, your allergies go on a seven year cycle and you can develop and drop allergies on that seventh year rapidly. You can develop a new allergy anytime but on the seventh year you can develop multiple allergies or have all but your childhood allergies disappear. Also where you just had that nasty flu that is on the go your body could still be sensitive to new substances and your immune system could still be off. Always be very careful for 4 to 6 months after any illness like the flu or having surgery as those are times when you can develop allergies to new substances you expose yourself to. Have them include a wider nut base and the chicory root in your next rapid allergy tests. Also you might discuss carrying an Epipen (Epinephrine Auto-Injectors). If you have a nut reaction the next one could be life threatening. Glad you didn’t try the frozen desert at your party today and have your day ruined. Happy Canada Day.

How scary! So glad you’re alright!! I once had a bad reaction to something (still not sure what – I think it was bc I didn’t drink enough H20 after a deep tissue massage) and I sounded like I had a cold & also had a fever. When I started to not be able to breathe right, I started freaking out and my Dad took me to the ER and they gave me a shot (can’t remember now what it was) and my throat loosened up and all was well, but it was SO scary!

I have a client that reacts to chicory root, just as you did, only she gets hives. Usually that’s a sign of an IgE response your body is having to the food. There are a handful of different types of antibodies that make up your immune system. Allergies are signaled by the IgE reponse (sudden reaction as you had) and sensitivities (think headache, constipation, or difficulty understanding the day after you eat something) are signaled by IgG. Depending on the allergy test you had done, it may not have tested for more than one antibody. (Generally the tests only go after IgG – testing for anaphylaxis)

It could have also been the type of soy used. I know that some people have reactions like that to soy with certain products, but not with others. I’m perfectly fine with soy, but I can’t hand any of the “so delicious” products because I react the same as you! Good luck :)

Actually, hypersensitive and anaphylactic reactions (type I allergy) are IgE-mediated. IgG is involved in type II (cytotoxic) immune reactions, which cause cell destruction via complement activation. Typical allergy testing either provokes the IgE response to an allergen (as in scratch tests) or measures the level of IgE antibodies in the blood. (I’m a medical technologist in the immunology field, so antibody types and allergic reactions have been drilled into me. :-)) In my experience though, allergists don’t test for EVERY potential allergen – only the likely ones. I was tested for all common grass, mold, pollen, and tree allergens, but no animal or food allergens, based on my symptoms. I would highly suggest you have your allergy testing repeated and make sure they include all potential allergens, like soy or dairy. A reaction like the one you had can signify a “first exposure” to an allergen which, upon a second exposure, can cause an anaphylactic reaction since your system has been “primed” to recognize it now… and that can be extremely dangerous. Good luck figuring it out!

I broke out into full on hives at work yesterday! Luckily it was towards the end of the day so I finished what I was doing and headed out to buy some benadryl but it was scary, I felt so weird in my own skin for a while!

Thank goodness benadryl helped! I hate hospital waiting rooms…

Have you ever been tested for allergies before? Some allergens are crosslinked. Hopefully it won’t happen again though.

I’m so sorry to hear that you reacted so horribly to SoDelicious ice cream! I’m actually a fan of it, because it’s one of the few brands in the grocery store near me that doesn’t include polysorbate 80 in its ingredients, or coconut oil… <– I'm allergic to both! I've had a severe reaction to a Breyers ice cream before, and my throat closed up so fast that I blacked out for a short period. The worst part is that I live alone! Thankfully – and obviously – I survived with only a sore throat and a weird story to tell, haha.

Who knows, though! There could have been any other ingredient on that list that you're not usually allergic to, but it may have gotten contaminated or something by one of the suppliers for SoDelicious, and you just happened to be the one unlucky customer that bought that particular tub of ice cream. :(

In any case, I'm glad you're okay! In some ways, it's really quite terrifying to have allergies to certain foods or ingredients that pop up often… Hope you enjoy your Canada Day regardless of your sore throat and rough evening!

Hi Angela! Isn’t it a bummer when you react to food? I am wondering if it is the carrageenan that you are allergic to. Carrageenan is a red algae and used as a thickener in most soy-based products. You can get severe rash and headaches from it and unless you are specifically tested for that food in an allergy test, you would never know. I had the Elisa Act allergy test done in 2004 where they tested my blood against 380 different food items and that was my most allergic food. Who would have known? However, once I realized that was my worst allergen, I quickly began looking into the products it was used in and discovered that the soy chai I would order from Starbucks (all those years ago) that I always reacted to with a rash from head to toe was because of the carrageenan in the soymilk they used because soy and chai are not something I react to when I use them at home. That’s why I would keep trying it again and again – knowing I wasn’t allergic to soy and chai and perhaps it was just something else. It was! :-) Now that I am a nutrition consultant, I have discovered that it is a common allergen for many. Might not be your problem, but then again, it may be! :-) Have a happy 4th of July, Angela! Hi Angela,
I recently got results from an allergist who told me that when someone is allergic to certain plants, there are related food items that may cause reactions. I’m allergic to ragweed, and two items on my “possible food allergy” list are:
-chicory root
-safflower oil
I can email the full list if you are interested. It was shocking! I have a very unpleasant reaction when I eat most brands of soy ice cream. The best ice cream for me is the coconut milk ice cream by Larry and Luna- it doesn’t have chicory in it. :)

OMG Ange I can’t believe you had such a terrible reaction! I’ve noticed that chicory root is in quite a lot of cereals lately, and I’m thinking it’s because it adds fiber – something a lot of people look for in their cereals. Anyways, I’m glad you’re ok! Can’t wait to see the menu for tonight! :)

HAPPY CANADA DAY! It won’t feel like a true celebration until I get done work tonight at 7:30pm…but luckily it’s only a short shift, so I still have most of the afternoon to do some baking and then after work, the evening to possibly see the fireworks.

So happy the reaction went away. That’s always scary; especially since you ate something that would seem to be so harmless. Maybe it was Coconut Bliss’s way of telling you to stick with them. I have some in my freezer from when it was on sale…I’m nursing it like crazy!

If you get allergy testing done, you should really opt for a “food sensitivity blood test”. In this test, blood is drawn and tested for antibodies against tons of foods (mine tested me against 95 different foods). Food allergies don’t show up in the normal skin prick allergy testing, just environmental ones show up. The test is expensive (~$200) but it is accurate (you are either making a antibody against a food or you are not) and takes any “second guessing” out of your diet. If you visit a naturopathic doctor, you can get the test arranged, or maybe some labs in your area offer the testing. I got the test done as I was curious about some reactions I was having; I wanted to see if they were related to my diet.

I used to work at a bar and one night after we closed and everyone was having their staff drinks, I had the bartender make me ‘my usual’ a vodka soda. Within minutes of my first sip, my lips and tongue were swelling up, my upper body got seriously itchy and I broke out into hives. I took a couple of benedryl and felt fine but at someone’s advice, I went and stayed with a friend that night because apparently the most dangerous thing you can do is go home alone to bed.

Wow, how scary! I’m so glad you’re OK. What an awful wait time at the hospital. What if you actually needed to be seen? Jeez. It’s like that here too, unless it’s extremely serious even when it’s not very busy you’re there for hours :( It’s horrible with little kids.

I’m glad you were ok! What a scary experience! Allergies are so strange because they can literally appear and disappear at random times in your life. When I was a kid I was allergic to all kinds of things that I no longer am. But I know other people who have developed several allergies.

I know it’s not as bad – but I’ve tried that brand 2x now and each time I get SO sick to my stomach (worse than dairy sick) so who knows? It must not happen to everyone though, because that brand has been kicking around for a long time!

Random allergic reactions to substances you’ve never had a problem with are THE SCARIEST thing ever — I’m so glad you’re ok!! I’ve always had pretty bad seasonal allergies, but they’ve become really bad in the past ten years (“debilitating” is actually the word used on my medical chart). About 6 years ago, right after my 20th birthday, I was just hanging out eating an apple — THE SAME THING I HAD EVERY DAY — and my lips started to tingle and twitch. My tongue followed, and not long after, I got that itchy, “stuffy” throat that you’re describing.

Fast-forward to the present, and after a bunch of allergy tests, shots, etc., I now know that my seasonal allergies have gotten SO out of control that I have Oral Allergy Syndrome to anything birch-pollen related… meaning I can’t eat a lot of raw fruits, including apples, pears, plums, nectarines, etc, and I can’t eat fresh cilantro because they all make my lips swell until I look like Lisa Rinna. I also have real, Epipen-requiring allergies to peaches and anything mold-based, like bleu cheeses and the like, and I can’t eat anything “forraged,” like mushrooms, because the potential lurks for mold to have grown on them in the wild (I also can’t take any drugs that end in -cillan!). It’s SUCH a pain and I get so jealous when you and others post such mouth-watering recipes with them…. so please eat extra for me! :)

Anyway, I’m so glad that Eric gave you the benedryl and got you to the hospital, because in the event that the benes didn’t help, you were in the safest place! It’s terrifying, but at least now you have an idea of what you could have been allergic to… and that’s a good start! I’m glad you’re feeling better and please, stay safe! :)

Chicory root is in a lot of prepackaged foods, also as ‘inulin’ or ‘inulin fibre’. It’s the same thing. So Delicious puts it in their coconut-based ice cream as well. I’ve had that and didn’t react to it. I usually stick to Blue Mountain’s raw cashew-based ice cream. Your body can change over the years, so maybe another allergy test might confirm something.

I think I might have an allergy to hemp. Whenever I use it, my skin completely breaks out. I was eating good-quality hemp protein and seeds too. It was all organic, non-gmo, etc.

Yikes! That sure is scary! You must’ve been worried & scared too, since usually, redness of the skin is not a good sign!
At least things subsided and returned back to normal. Oh, and don’t eat Fiber One bars then…since the first ingredient in the chocolate chip bars is chicory root extract!
At least you’re better plus the website is in a magazine!! Congratz ^^

Woah that is so weird!!! Thankfully it was nothing to serious!!! I think I’ve eaten things before with chicory root so I don’t think my body reacts to it….but still, very odd!

HAPPY CANADA DAY Angela!!! I just wanted to throw out there that yes, chicory root is used in packaged foods to add fibre but this is chicory root EXTRACT. Extracts are automatically more concentrated. Maybe you had such an intense reaction because it is so concentrated? I am no expert on allergies, just a thought. But there you have yet another reason why pre-packaged foods are not all that great for people. :) Have a great weekend!!!

Your reaction sounds similar to what I had when I ingested brie cheese one day. My face, arms and legs turned bright red and burning within 10 minutes after having a bite of brie. Up until that incident, I had been eating brie cheese all my life (I’m 28) without any problems. 3 months later my sister had the exact same reaction to walnuts without any previous reactions ever, then my boyfriend had the exact same thing happen to him after having some seafood, and then my mom after having chocolate. One of my coworkers also had the same thing happen to her out of nowhere a few weeks ago. None of us had any previous reactions to food and all of them happened within a period of 1 year. I think it’s something in the environment to be honest. Maybe GMO foods, something in the water, who knows. It’s just very strange.

I tried this products years ago. I tend to have a lot of allergies so I read the ingredient list and allergens carefully. On the So Delicious label everything checked out fine, so I bought it figuring I found an ice cream I could eat. And I will NEVER touch that stuff again in my life! I’ve never had such stomach pain and cramps before (bending over in pain bad) in my life. To this day I still have no idea what caused such a reaction! Hope you feel better and that was smart thinking with the Benedryl!

Although you do consume some soy products, processed soy is so much different and most of us react to it, but in a less intense way. Things like miso, tempeh, braggs are easier for us to digest because they are fermented. Have you consumed any soy milk, soy yogurt or soy ice cream in the last year? I know a few people (some clients) who went of processed soy, then had a major reaction when they had some in a similar situation to yours.

I’ve had soy milk but not really soy ice cream or soy yogurt (maybe yogurt but in the tiniest amount ina muffin). Ive always thought soy gave me stomach cramps which is why I dont eat tofu and tempeh (I had really bad cramps from tempeh). My tests revealed no allergies to soy but they can develop later on I guess.

Yikes! I’m glad your reaction went away; I’ve had the So Delicious ice cream a few times, and I’ve never had a reaction, but I tend to stay away from packaged vegan ice cream because of the high price – like you, I usually go for banana soft serve!

Yikes, super scary! At least you caught it quickly. I saw that brand at Fortino’s last week but opted not to get it because even though “cheaper” it is still expensive for soy cream. I believe there’s some chicory root in this organic throat coat tea I drink when I feel a little ill. It naturally numbs your throat and warms your body….maybe you’re body took that to a whole new level! ;)

Chicory root…not good for people with gluten issues, either, b/c when I was a *strict* GF person, and was also pregnant and trying to not drink coffee, I wanted to drink the coffee substitutes but they are often made with chicory root in them and it can cause issues in those sensitive w/ gluten.

Also, when I was about 23, out of NO WHERE I ate shrimp one night at a restaurant and had spent a lifetime eating shrimp and other shellfish with no issues. And I had a severe, sudden, and life threatening anaplactic shock rxn to shrimp and that was the deciding day that I was not going to be a shellfish-dabbling every once in awhile eating type vegetarian. Nope. Shellfish is off the table and I have accidentally had it since then (shellfish touched over food/cross contamination in a restaurant meal) and ended up in the hosp AGAIN with a horrible near death reaction.

So it IS possible to just suddenly out of no where develop rxns to things!

Wow that’s so bizarre, especially since you’ve never had an allergic reaction to foods before. I’d be so curious to find out what caused it! But I’m glad it wasn’t anything serious and that you’re okay now.

A few weeks ago I had a reaction to the Nuts to You brand of tahini… it must have been cross contaminated with other nuts. Guess I know not to eat that stuff again!

Wow, how crazy! I had a similar experience a few weeks ago. I’ve never had an allergic reaction before but I came home from work and had a mango, some hazelnuts and coffee… all foods that I eat regularly. Within 5 minutes I started getting really itchy and my ears felt really hot. After scratching away for about 5 minutes I finally decided I must be getting hives. Sure enough, when I looked in the mirror my arms, chest and legs were covered in hives and my face was swollen and red. I popped a benadryl and then took a nap. When I woke up everything was back to normal. I didn’t know much about allergic reactions – still don’t, but a few days later I wanted to attempt to retrigger the reaction so I could figure out exactly what caused it (so I could later avoid that ingredient). I didn’t know that allergic reactions could get worse. No luck (or maybe good luck?) – nothing happened. I still don’t know what caused the strange allergic reaction but should probably invest in an epi pen just in case it randomly shows up again.

That chicory root does sounds suspicious, though it’s totally possible that you have developed an allergy to a food you don’t consume regularly, in this case perhaps dairy.

My older son is allergic to nuts and peanuts. The younger one isn’t. Our allergist made a point to instruct us to feed the younger son nuts as often as possible when we are outside our home and not with the older son (at least once a week if possible) so that he doesn’t develop a sensitivity or allergy to the nuts.

Oh, and yes, So Delicious and other soy milk products are known to have milk protein… our allergic-to-dairy little four-year-old friend only drinks rice milk or eats coconut milk-based products when she comes to our place.

I missed this post until now, I just wanted to say I’m sorry you had a reaction like this, they’re very frightening: just over a fortnight ago I had a reaction to Quinoa which I’m only just recovering from. I’d eaten it previously and been fine, but this time it made me violently ill (not through a skin reaction, although I did some research and some people have what sounds like an identical reaction to yours, even if they’ve eaten it for years and been fine with it) and I was vomiting (and other things, not to put too fine a point on it) and felt woolly-headed until the day after. My digestive system, always a delicate thing, still hasn’t quite got back on track :( I’ve never had a reaction to anything else and I found it a horrible experience and I truly sympathize with you!

Hi Angela, I have had So Delicious by Turtle Mountain many times but I get the coconut based (non-soy) ice cream instead. Sorry to hear about your reaction, I hope you find out what it was that caused that. Years ago I went into a Victoria Secret store and sprayed a body spray on and ended up with welts and hives all over my body that itched like crazy. I had to go to the ER and get a shot of adrenalin to ease my symptoms. To this day I still have no idea what caused it.

I recently had an allergic reaction to vegan cheese. I’ve been told that it was most probably the preservatives in it. I had hives all over. Has anyone had a similar reaction. I wanted to try eating the cheese again to make 100% sure that it was the vegan cheese. But my doctor told me not to because the next reaction might be worse. For the last few months I’ve been very tired & after loads of test, nothing was wrong. I then decided to keep a food diary because mydoctor asked me if I’m tired after eating. & it was the case,after having rice milk and refined foods. & then the hives after the vegan cheese.

My son had a serious reaction of this type that we believe was from chicory root. His allergist indicated there was no test for chicory root (or ginseng, another possible culprit). Several posts seem to indicate there is a common test for these substances. Can anyone help us find someone to do this test so we can narrow it down?
