This Is Not A Real Post

August 26, 2011

[Do you see the new blog header? If not, hold down the ‘Control’ key and ‘F5’ key at the same time to refresh your page if you aren’t seeing the new header.]

When the seasons change, I’m often motivated to change as well. I purge clutter, enjoy new seasonal food kicks, and break out a to-do list before succumbing to disorganization in 3 days time. Ah, it’s great.

The other day I was reading an article about improving the appearance of a blog. It said, ‘If your website had no text at all, would people know what your blog was about?’

I imagined my blog without text. All that was left was a creepy, glow-y profile picture circa 2008. Yikes.

It was kind of like looking back on my Grade 2 picture seeing myself with a side pony tail and a scrunchie.

Oh wow. Thanks Mom?

heading

I’d like to think this new header is clean, fresh, and seasonal. Aside from my dying basil plant, I was able to grow these vegetables in my garden this summer (the picture, however, is from 2010).

My plan is to create a new header for each season shooting local and seasonal produce. So if you hate this one, it’s only going to be around for about a month. For Fall, you’ll probably see gourds, squash, pumpkins, candy corn, apples, etc.

For Winter, you’ll probably see snow, ice, and extremely unflattering winter boots circa 1994. For Spring, dirt and mud. You get the idea.

This header was a close second with a new and improved tagline…

jokeheader

My third idea was a Chocolate Chunk Toffee Bar dipped into a Green Monster. It demonstrated a lovely balance of health and indulgence, but perhaps not the most photogenic header of all time.

PS- Photoshop owns my soul.

~~

I thought it would be fun to have a discussion about blog headers today. What makes a great blog header? For bloggers: Did you design yours or have someone design it? What do you love about your header or want to change? Feel free to link to your blog in the comments.

I just used a picture a friend took as my header… I don’t really know HOW to design one. I’d love a “how to” post. :)

I like the header but I’ll miss seeing you! Maybe in full blown Fall you could have a pic of you holding a basket of fruits and veggies with the changing leaves behind you or in a cornucopia? (The fruits and veggies, not you in the cornucopia unless of course you’re feeling like jamming yourself in one. Can you tell 1) I’m so in need of a weekend and 2) I’m ready for Fall like yesterday!?)

Only if half of you is popping out of the cornucopia juggling turnips, sweet potatoes, butternut squash and baby pumpkins! But hey, what a traffic draw for a month! :-) (Because longer than a month would just be wrong! LOL)

Your shirt in the grade 2 picture is baller! Also, the new banner is a delight. Kinda making me crave tomato sauce!

I only started my blog three weeks ago, so I don’t have a fancy header (honestly, I wasn’t sure I could keep it up past a week, but I’m having so much fun with it!). Mine is the just the name of my blog! I like your idea of changing it for the seasons though, very fun!

The header is lovely. You’re rocking that ponytail. My mom did the same style on me, except she twisted the tail into this weird roll thing while it was wet. Somehow it would stay that way all day – like a big red cocoon on the side of my face. Ah, the good old days.

My header is self-designed (our souls are held hostage by the same fabulous software). And I love it. I learned how to use the path tool just so I could make it. It’s amazing. I use that tool for all kinds of things now. Including my recent “Screw the noble reasons. I just wanna look great naked” photo/reason for wanting to lose weight/ad thingy at Jack Fit.

By the way, for a “not a real post,” this one sure seems like a good one. ;)

I’m actually so glad you changed your header because I read your blog everyday at work and I have to kind of minimize my browser in a way so your picture doesn’t show – people will then definitely know I’m reading personal blogs at work!

Also side ponytails are still in imho! :D

love the new header. That’s a great tip, I’m glad mine does in fact reflect what my blog is about if it had no text! Good test though :)
I really would like to update mine with better pictures though but I’m ridiculously horrible at technology so this scares me and I refuse to pay for any more blog services for at least a couple of months after a self host switch, buying domains, buying hosts, and redesign!
I’m excited to see your new headers with the seasons!

I totally agree with change. My header shows water I think. Kind of generic but it is a photo that I took, plus really, water represents a lot of very important things — life, change, flow…
