Morning!
Last night was a productive night. We hung the small collage of pictures, did the garbage, tax return, laundry, and uploaded albums. No time to read though. Hopefully tonight!
Last night Eric told me something that happened to him the other day.
He said, ‘Do you want the good news or the bad news first?’
‘Good, always.’
‘I think I am immune to pop.’
‘That was fast. The bad news?’
‘I drank pop today.’
I laughed.
He swallowed.
‘I was out for lunch and I bought some juice, or what I thought was juice anyways. It was some type of orange drink. I took a sip and discovered it was carbonated POP.’
He swallowed.
‘That’s no big deal, anyone could have made that mistake. Don’t worry about it! The good news?’
‘I took a drink of it and almost spit it out- it tasted so gross to me. I can’t believe I used to drink that stuff.’
He had the guiltiest look on his face I think I have ever seen. I had to smile. I don’t know what he was more horrified of: the fact that he wasn’t expecting to taste pop or the fact that he doesn’t enjoy the taste anymore! Either way, I am a proud wife. It just goes to show you how taste buds can dramatically change after just 4 months.
It also made me think about when I made the transition to a vegan diet. It wasn’t a sudden decision on my part, but one that was done over the course of a year. I slowly began to cut down meat and dairy. I craved cheese, yogurt, and eggs a lot for about 4 months and then the cravings just stopped. I now get cravings for the new foods that I eat, almost as if my body forgets what I used to eat, or better yet, maybe prefers the new diet all together.
Eric finds that he now craves drinks like orange juice and tea when he previously would have craved a pop and he says his cravings for Coke have gone away about 99% in just 4 months. For his Coke story and why he decided to kick the habit, see this post.
I asked him if he would ever drink Coke in moderation again, like at a party or dinner out.
‘I don’t think I could bring myself to drink a can.’
This morning I was a photographer fail and my camera battery died on me. I blame the ridiculously long photoshoot I had with the CSA veggies last night on the deck. The back-up battery was dead too, which I know, completely defeats the purpose of a back-up battery. It’s all good. I will have two batteries in a couple hours so I can snap my little heart out.
In lieu of not having any breakfast pictures, I thought I would show you some of my favourite Vegan Overnight Oats Parfait shots…prepare to drool!
The one on the left is the one Eric made for me on my birthday in May!
Recipes can be found on my recipe page (I update it daily!). Are you a vegan overnight oats or regular overnight oats fan? What is your favourite way to eat it?
I think my favourite way is with peanut butter banana soft serve (1 frozen banana processed with 1 tbsp peanut butter) and Classic vegan overnight oats (1/2 cup oats, 1 cup almond milk, 1-2 tbsp chia seeds, 1/4 scoop Amazing Grass chocolate amazing meal).
My second fabourite way is Cherry Chocolate VOO.

Today’s question- Have your taste buds ever changed over time for certain foods?

Okay, I seriously have to try a vegan overnight oats parfait. After all of those pictures (which killed me right after my own breakfast, lol) a batch for tomorrow is really quite necessary.
I agree with your saying how your taste buds can change. I don’t drink pop often (only the occasional root beer) but I used to be addicted to this diet cherry 7uP. For Lent I gave it up and when I tried to drink it again I found it too sweet and have never had it since. With most foods, though, good or bad, if you don’t have it for a stretch you will not crave it. Similarly, if you eat it on a regular basis you will grow to honestly crave it.
Gah, once again I basically write you a novel. You need to stop having posts with so much to respond to! lol
Yes! I used to haaaate bananas and now I am addicted to them! When I was younger I didn’t like the mush. But now i enjoy how hearty they are. They make a great post work out addition to breakfast!
It is funny because when I was a child, I didn’t like eating meat but I finished by getting used to it. So when I decided to stop eating meat, I actually never had a craving for it!
And how nice it is to see all these pictures of VOO just before eating one! As long as there is soft serve in it, you can count it as my favorite ;).
GASMMMMM. :) Those parfaits are simply gorgeous. My tummy is rumbling just scanning through!
Yummm…overnight oats! Thanks so much for introducing them to me – we’ve become great friends!
My favorite oats are regular VOO with a mashed (ripe!) banana (I find this is pretty essential). Lately, I’ve also been adding walnut bits in the morning before I leave for work and this morning I added some cranberries – oh, so good! I love VOO – so easy, and it actually makes me look forward to getting to work in the morning, so I can chow down, lol.
As for tastebuds changing, I absolutely think this is true – we totally ruin our buds by eating super sugary, salty, junky food. After becoming increasingly healthy over the past few months, I’m finding I like natural, healthy (ie non-sugary, salty, junky) foods LOTS better and surprisingly NEVER have cravings for junk from fast food places.
Really, Angela – I want to thank you for this blog. I started reading a couple months ago and I really think it’s your blog that has inspired me to become really healthy. I was trying to watch what I ate/work out before, but now I have such a passion for making my own healthy, natural meals and not relying so much on processed, packaged foods. I feel incredible! Thank you! :-)
My taste buds have done a complete 180 since I cut out processed foods a couple of years ago. I used to love fast food/junk food, but now I am totally turned off by it. Not to say I don’t snag a fry from my husband’s meal on occasion, but I definitely don’t crave them and one is always enough!
Your pics are beautiful! I love vegan overnight oats with blackberries mixed in and layered with strawberry banana soft serve!
OK this gives me faith that there’s a possibility that I won’t crave Cokes anymore! lol. I drink maybe one a week and it’s really only when we go out to eat, but STILL. I don’t want HFCS in my body!
Also my tastes have definitely changed. I used to HATE broccoli with a passion, and now it’s a MUST in stir frys, at least. I still can’t do things like cream of broccoli soup but hey I’ve come a long way with it for sure. There are some things that just are not changing, however, such as my dislike of sour things such as sour cream, cream cheese, etc. Yuck yuck yuck. :P
Heh, I gave up “pop” (I call it soda) about a month ago. I alwasy thought I was a Diet Coke head…some days I’d drink 3-4 cans! Usually caffeine-free tho, so it wasn’t b/c of the caffeine. But I decided to try to give it up for a week, just to see if I could do it. And then I found it wasn’t hard at all. Never craved it and took a sip about 2 weeks in and really didn’t care for the taste….one of the oddest things that’s ever happened to me, but I was pleasantly surprised I was able to give it up so easily. :-)
Your VOOs always looks great. :)
Haha. That conversation between you and Eric made me laugh. But congrats to him. I used to be a huge pop drinker.
I used to eat a lot of artificial sweeteners because I was always craving something sweet but over the last couple of months I’ve cut the artificial sweeteners instead opting for dark chocolate or fruit, since then my cravings for sweet foods has significantly decreased.
My taste buds have definitely changed over the years! It used to be a struggle for me to squeeze healthy food into my day (especially salads and green juice), and now I crave stuff like that! I’ve noticed my sensitivity to sweetness has also increased, so I don’t need to sweeten things as much as I used to…
My taste buds have definitely changed- I crave sweets a lot less often now, and I eat different kinds of sweets to satisfy my cravings! I definitely can’t eat candy anymore, and oftentimes a plain greek yogurt with some mix-ins will suffice for an ice cream craving- I am much more aware of how sugar makes me feel after I eat it and I don’t like that feeling.
my fiance gave up soda about 5 months ago. He’s terrified to try it again because he thinks he’ll slip back into wanting it again. I wonder if he’d have the same reaction your husband did if he tried it again! As for me, I’m slowly trying to transition away from the bad and bring more good in my life. I find my body almost craving greens if I don’t have a lot of veggies or a green monster that day! I still crave the bad, but I’ve started to think differently about it atleast. I don’t think I need cake or ice cream anymore and can actually turn it down, so slowly but surely, someday I’ll get there!
I do Vegan Overnight Oats everyday. Thank you sooo much for turning me on to that! I had been seeing it on your blog for months before I finally got up the nerve to try it and I am glad that I did. I don’t even have to add any sweetener to it anymore. And I even got my husband turned onto them too! Every day i make a big bowl and it is there for both of us to eat whenever the next morning. Genius!
My fave way is topped with what I call Reese’s Pieces Soft Serve. It’s frozen banana with peanut butter and cacao nibs. And don’t be shy with the PB and nibs, either! Sooo goood! And of course, extra nibs sprinkled on! :0)
And I would love to try the cherry soft serve. That sounds (and looks!) really good. Are the cherries frozen or fresh when you add them?
I try to freeze them as it keeps the soft serve more like soft serve!
Eric is a cutie!! It looks like he’s slimmed down (in a GOOD way) since kicking the habit, no? Congrats to him!
Yeah, my taste buds certainly change every few months or so. I slowly crave certain things less and other things more. Unfortunately, it isn’t always for the better! lol
I LOVE overnight oats (I might or might not be eating some right now…lol)
I love eating fresh strawberries, dark chocolate peanut butter, oats mixed with yogurt, with some plain yogurt on the side. I hate my foods mixed together so everything is separate and I can take a bite of each thing I want.
I used to hate olives and shrimp, and I made myself acquire a taste for them. Now I love them!!
I think our taste buds definitely change over time, as we learn to love new foods, and lose our desire for other foods.
Hi!
First, I want to say that I really enjoy reading your blog, I’ve been reading regularly for a little while now. I find your posts very inspiring. These past few years have been very difficult and I have a lot of regrets that haunt me every day. A lot of what you’ve posted has started me on my journey to find what I’m missing in my life. I’ve been trying to work out exactly what that is and was excited for your book recommendation recently. After reading your first quote from Eat, Pray, Love I immediately purchased it. I have to say that several parts have already nearly brought me to tears and I can tell this will be a life changing book for me. I haven’t made it very far through the first part, but I just wanted to say thank you, for your inspirig words and for giving me a place to search for myself. I’ve been struggling and I never thought I would find inspiration from a person I’ve never met — but I’m sure I’m not the only person who has had this experience with you and your thoughtful posts. Thank you :)
Not that I drank much soda before this, but once I broke my leg (this May is when it happened – it’s still broken now), I did some research and found out the nasty effects that soda has on bones. I’d rather go without a syrupy, fizzy Coke so that my leg can heal properly, thank you!
I think it is so amazing how taste buds change over time. I know mine have become a lot more acclimated to veggies over the years. Although sometimes changes haven’t been for the best. Ever since being pregnant with my first I love ketchup – something I used to HATE.
