Calling All Recipe Testers

January 15, 2015

cookbook

We are eating like kings around here lately. Whoever invented elastic waistbands…I think I love you/hate you. [If you didn’t hear the news in my last post, I’m working away on a second cookbook!]

For my first cookbook, I relied on a fabulous group of dedicated and passionate recipe testers who gave my recipes a whirl in their own kitchens and then provided detailed and honest feedback. Recipe testers are essential to the cookbook development process (just like your recipe reviews on this blog!) and I couldn’t have produced such a solid group of recipes without them. It really takes a village! I recruited family and friends mostly, but since I received a lot of interest from my blog readers, I decided to open it up to you this time around.

I’m looking for recipe testers of all different abilities, so if you are a new cook or a seasoned pro feel free to apply. You certainly don’t have to be vegan either. My passion is creating recipes that people with all kinds of diets can enjoy. Those of you who can commit to testing at least 3 recipes per week will be given top priority as we’ll need to move through the recipes at a good pace.

I’m also looking for testers who will…

follow recipes exactly as written (this isn’t the time to make substitutions, unless suggested in the recipe),

take notes while cooking (such as noting your prep time or any areas of confusion in the directions),

submit thorough feedback immediately following the recipe (there will be an electronic form with standardized questions for each recipe).

You will also need a blender and a food processor as some of the recipes require these tools.

One last thing. Do you love to stuff your face with super delicious food? Perfect. I knew we would hit it off.

If you think you’d like to apply, you can fill out this submission form below. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to take on everyone who applies, but thank you all for your generosity in offering your help!

I am thrilled you are working on another cookbook. The first one must have been a lot of work but you should be proud of it. Everything I have made, I get the thumbs up from husband and me of course. Keep up the excellent work.

I’d love to be considered. Really enjoy your work and what you do. Maybe I’d be a good candidate because I do such little cooking and baking that if a recipe works for me, it must be amazing.

Hi Angela! I already make 1-3 of your meals a week, sometimes the same, but I mostly different ones each time. I follow your recipes to the T. Often, when people come over, I just hand your cookbook to family/friends and tell them to pick a recipe for all of us to try! I also enjoy seeing your updated book recipes on your blog (I.e, the veggie burger and lentil-walnut tacos).
I just filled out the form. I hope you consider me as a recipe taster!

I was waiting for this post!!
I found your website in 2008 shortly after deciding to try veganism to improve some severe health problems – I was hopeless and ready to quit (too much rice and broccoli!) until I found your site! I’m so excited for the opportunity to recipe test for you – I’ve made almost every recipe in the OSG cookbook, not to mention all the recipes posted since 2008!
Thank you for reaching out to us!

What a great idea, to have regular people prepare and try your recipes before they are published. I’m in a dinner/meal idea rut and this sounds like a fun way to get out of it! Good luck to everyone who applies :)

Hello, I use your cookbook everyday it seems for something. I would like to know if its possible to add the calorie counts of the dish: carb %, protein, fat and fibre. would it be possible for you to put this in the next book at all?

Thanks,

Hi Angela!
So excited you’re working on another book – fingers crossed i get a chance to participate in the recipe testing!!

Just a thought off Ellen’s comment – it would be great to have the protein etc. counts.. but maybe not the calorie count? When i use your recipes or cookbook, calorie count doesn’t even cross my mind because I know what I’m about to eat is a plate of delicious nutrition.

Maybe including the calorie count will just create an obsession over numbers and somewhat defeat the purpose I and many others use your recipes for.

Just my input!

Thanks for your feedback Sarah-Jane! I think if I were to include the nutritional info, it would be in a table in the back of the book (and not on the recipe pages). So it wouldn’t be a focus of the book since it’s not something I use myself, but it would be there for others to look up. Still not quite sure what I will do yet but that is an option!

Just to add my two cents… I also don’t count calories, but what would be most helpful for me is iron information (and other vitamins/minerals) as I’m always uber conscious of my iron intake!

A really cool idea might be making a section called, “How You’re Making Your Body Glow.” There you can list all the goodness – ie. vitamins, minerals, nutrients – included in your recipes. This would be a good opportunity to learn about nutrition, rather than focus on numbers.
Just a thought :)

I love that idea Alexa!

Also want to add my two cents: Angela, I think your story is very inspiring to many others to stop calorie counting and to start eating awesome whole food. Calorie counts of the recipes might just promote that again…?

Not the best cook here…..but would love to be considered for a “Recipe Taster” position. How exciting. I’m glad you’re not taking just vegans though either. I may not be strictly vegan but I still love this blog, your recipes and every animal under the planet.

Also love elastic waistbands, although I haven’t been pregnant in 4 years, my favorite jeans are still a pair of maternity ones!!!

I became a vegan a year ago for health reasons and so I am new to cooking this way. I love to cook and since my three daughters moved back home (all got a divorce and brought a dog!) I have pretty much converted them too. I have your first book and refer many to your site. Testing recipes to the letter of your instructions would be a great way for me to progress and experience new food prep.
Thank you for the opportunity to apply.

This would be a dream!!! I have fallen in love with your cookbook and the recipes on your website. I would love to be a tester, keeping my fingers crossed.

I’ve written several blog posts about your cookbook:

I did fill in the form but only gave the main link to my blog.

I can’t wait for your second book! Congratulations :)

I stumbled across your website over a year ago and we have pretty much only eaten ohsheglows meals since. My husband and I were training for an Ironman and decided to change our diet in order to get healthier (and hopefully race faster!). I love trying all of your different recipes and we couldn’t get over how much better we both felt. Your delicious recipes allowed us to fuel, train, and recover properly. I would LOVE to be a recipe tester as we prep for another Ironman this year. Side note- my husband had his best year ever of racing and qualified for and competed at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii last October. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love your blog :)

sorry if this is rude (i don’t mean to be AT ALL), but is this a paid opportunity? i know that sometimes the ingredients you use in your recipes can be a little expensive, but if we are compensated, i would definitely be interested because i really love reading you site and i’d be happy to support it in any way :) if anyone else knows the answer to this question, please let me know as well!

It’s not rude at all to clarify any questions you have! For the first book we did regular giveaways (in the form of Visa gift cards or gift cards of the winner’s choice), so we will probably do the same this time around. But no it’s not paid, but on a volunteer basis. Hope this helps!

I would LOVE to do this – I have found so many recipes from OSG which I have shared with friends and family (even non-veg ones!). Since going vegan years ago, I have become much more adventurous with trying new things, and I learned to cook in the process.

I would love to be a recipe tester! I actually discovered the cookbook before your blog and I have made so much from both. Your cookbook is my go-to and is pretty dog-eared already….lol! Even my non-vegan friends and family love everything I’ve made from it!

I have a husband and 3 boys under 6 with very particular pallets, if they approve a recipe, it’s golden! I’d love to help with this, I’m basically on a vegan culinary journey right now, I can’t get enough of these wonderful recipes!
