I talk about my ‘Road to Health’ a lot on the blog (full series here). Now, I’m curious about you! Tell me in one comment below if there was a turning point in your life that got you on a healthier path and started your own road to health. What was it? If there wasn’t a turning point, let me know something in your life right now that helps you feel healthier each day. Share your tips and tricks!
My turning point was seeing my weight creep to the highest it had ever been after a routine weigh-in at the doctor’s office. I gained almost 30 pounds in my first year of university and I hit rock bottom. The doctor bluntly looked at me and said, ‘It is really easy to consume more calories than you intend to when you are in university…late nights…partying…it all adds up over time…’ I was embarrassed and I knew in my heart that he was right. After that I vowed to make changes!
Some day-to-day things that keep me feeling amazing are: green monsters, exercise, Amazing Grass, Vitamins (B12, Calcium-Vit D-Magnesium), Sencha Green Tea, colourful fruit/vegetables, and minimally processed foods.
Contest is open to US and CAD residents only. Contest closes Saturday at 8am EST.
GOODLUCK!
See you tomorrow morning for an amazing breakfast banana split recipe.
My Aha moment is that I work a full time and part time job and also go to college full time. It’s alot and I am crazy busy most of the time. I realized I needed to exercise to keep my sanity and to eat healthy so that I don’t get sick ( I work with 52 kindergardeners :) Obviously I feel it’s important to be healthy but for me it’s necessary just to give my body the energy it needs!
My turning point was my children. My oldest son had 8 ear infections in his first 18 months and I knew that wasn’t right! So I started researching. I took him and my other children off dairy (and myself) and low and behold none of my children have ever had any kind of infections again. And the bonus for me was my life long battle with acne cleared up within a few weeks. I have 4 children now and since going off dairy 8 years ago none of them have ever been sick. I mean never. Maybe a slight runny nose a few times but that is it :-D
saw pictures of myself trying on wedding gowns. I knew I had gained weight but never realized I had “back fat.” Yikes!
My turning point in finally committing to more healthful living was how unhappy I was with my lack of energy. Since minimizing processed foods, adding green monsters to my diet, and committing to a healthy amount of varied exercise, I feel so. much. better. Thanks for all your inspiration, Angela!
Seeing my hair fall out in clumps every morning got my attention. I had gained 20-25lbs in 3 years and though I was’t happy about that I didn’t care enough to make any changes.
Definitely becoming vegan for ethical reasons sparked an interest in nutrition!
My turning point was when I had a divorce several years ago. My friend suggested me to start exercising so that I would feel better. I followed her advice and now go to the gym almost every day. Exercising has changed my life forever. I look better and feel great (well, most of the time). I would highly recommend everyone to make regular exercising her top priority.
I can distinctly remember the day I was brought to tears because of my weight. I felt desperate for help because I didn’t know how to do it on my own. The next day I signed up for a Biggest Loser competition and today, 98 pounds later, I’ve totally changed my life!
After first semester finished, i grabbed my thighs and looked on in horror. i vowed to change my weight once and forall
My turning point came about 2 years ago. I was going through a difficult time of transition- finally finished grad school and was starting my own business as a freelance opera singer, was coming out of a break-up after dating someone for 4 years, and had gained about 20 pounds from all of the stress. Around that time I became completely inspired by all the Healthy Living Blogs I stumbled across online (yours was very important to me!!) and since then I have turned a new leaf health-wise. One day I was driving and I just started to cry because I suddenly really believed in myself! I felt strong and beautiful, I felt ready to tackle my crazy career, feel more confident in having a successful and healthy relationship, and have the tools to maintain my weight and fuel my body with whole foods. It’s awesome! I’ve also been mainly vegetarian for about 7 months now, and I feel great!
Running my first half-marathon! :)
WONDERFUL giveaway! My healthy turning point came with discovering blog world. Seeing a community of healthy and happy women was so inspiring.
I’ve been in kind of a turning “phase” since graduating college last year – trying to get away from late night food runs and drinking, etc. Now that I cook for myself I feel much healthier, and I walk to work everyday, which is awesome!
Turing point: switching to whole grains…so much more satisfying! Giving up endless diets for whole foods and a real life full of colour and movement.
Reading fast food nation, amzing book which inspired a chage of action in me! and the wonderful women blog writers, thanks!
When I was a freshman in College and had more freedom, living on my own and such, it occurred to me one day in the cafeteria that I had a choice every day to eat healthy or not and to exercise or not. Something about gaining my independence shook some sense into me and I didn’t want to take it for granted.
There wasn’t really a turning point for me. I had been unhappy with my body for so long, and finally one day I realized I COULD make change. I startled slowly, walking a few miles every day, and months later, I’m up to jogging a bit every day. I’m not fast, but I’m feeling good about the way I’m finally taking care of myself!
My turning point came from you and you’re blog :)To be brief, I’ve suffered with an eating disorder for about seven years, and this past fall, after graduating from college, I fell into one of the worst cycles I have ever been in. I was desperate, tired and searching for a way to recover from my disease. While searching the internet looking for information and inspiration I came across your website. After two weeks of reading your blog my entire life changed. I’ve begun thinking HEALTHY not skinny, drinking green drinks, and running again (because I finally have my energy back). It has now been about 2 months since I stopped my eating disorder habits completely, and I’m never looking back! Everyday has a new struggle, but having your blog and support to look to has given me constant strength. Thank you, Angela, from the bottom of my heart!!
I have struggled with my weight all my life. I have been up and down depending on the diet and then the binging. A year and a half ago I went to the doctor and my weight was over 250. That was it. I decided to lose weight the smart healthy way. But one problem I am getting my masters and working full time so my stress level is out of this world already. I decided to just start making healthier choices, getting sleep and fitting in exercise where I can. I am down 20 lbs and don’t feel deprived or stressed over it. I am proud of my accomplishment and will continue to do this until I am at a point where I feel my best.
My turning point was gradual . . . I was never really educated very well on nutrition. Unfortunately, this made my teenage years a little rocky to say the least. I wanted to be ‘skinny’ not frumpy in high school. I thought fat, even ‘good’ fat was the devil and I wouldn’t touch the stuff. Then all carbs were bad. I was terribly underweight my freshman and into my sophomore year and then when I attempted to ‘get healthy’ I blew up into, well . . . an ugly balloon. Looking back it makes me sad to know how eager I was to just understand what food was good and what was bad and how terribly clueless I was! I am now a registered nurse and educate my patient’s everyday! It still amazes me that people of all ages have NO IDEA what good wholesome food can do for them. I am passionate about teaching others so that they don’t have to go through some of the terrible ups and downs that I experienced growing up. I recently tried a green monster at a friend’s house and am hooked! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I will be sure to pass it a long to my patient’s! = )
I just want to say I love your blog! My turning point came this past year during my second year in doctoral program for psychology. I began seeing clients and was always speaking about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle (exercise, yoga, nutrition) and trying to incorportate positive psychology exercises into your life, but realized I was doing very little of this myself! I was gaining weight from the pressure of being in a doctoral program and working part time. This year I decided it was time to practice what I preach! I began eating better and waking up early every morning to go to the gym! I feel better than ever and the best part is I am being authentic when I give others these tips!
Stop Comparing Myself to others is the tip that helped me the most. However, they were all great!!!
I moved to the east coast. I’m surrounded by amazing things everywhere here, and a really strong running culture. I’ve been working towards joining them. Also, reading this blog got my vegan stuff going… So, I have two?
My turning point was nearly 4 years ago when I realized I was creeping up to 275 pounds. I could barely walk around the block. I now actively participate in Crossfit 3 to 4 days a week and I run and do yoga. I am 115 pounds down from my heaviest and my life is full of fruits and veggies and happiness!
Just in under the wire. I have been striving to be as healthy as possible for my whole life. But three year ago that went a little too far and I ended up with a BMI of 16 an 10% body fat. Since then I’ve been working hard at regaining my health by living with balance rather than strict rules about what is healthy.
Wow, for AGES I’ve been DYING to try these!
My turning point…when I read a cookbook about raw and living foods, I realized that I could probably have a lot more energy and a more fulfilled life if I ate better. That was the beginning of my path to health and fitness and it’s been getting better ever since!
Discovering resveratrol really opened my eyes to a healthier way of living. I’m right at that age where heart health has become a conscious concern. Discovering resveratrol kicked me off into a whole new regimen of vitamin and food-choice nutrition.
my turning point was stepping onto a scale after 3 years and seeing that I had gained 20 lbs! I started exercising, and then changed my diet, and lost 25 lbs!
