35 Weeks

August 23, 2014

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset 22vs35weeks

Hello! How is your weekend going?

As I write this post, I am one day short of 36 weeks and just 1 week shy of being full-term. Speed that up by almost a week if you go by my ultrasound due date (Sept 17th) rather than the LMP due date (Sept 22). Everyone keeps telling me she could come any day now! Eek. But then I tell them we have an agreement – baby promised not to come during the kitchen renovation. I’m sure that means she’ll surprise us and come tomorrow or something.

I’ve noticed so many changes in pregnancy symptoms this week. It must be getting close to Go Time because my body seems to be in prep mode. Or at least, that’s what I’d like to think. For starters, I feel like the baby is starting to drop because the pressure on my bladder is insane this week. She feels lower too and her hiccups feel lower down. Did you know that bladders make great baby pillows? They do….and also, punching bags. Her head boppin’ on my bladder also means I feel like I have to pee about 96% of the day. When I met with my doc he seemed to think my belly had dropped since the last appointment.

I’ve also had some pelvic pain and some new shooting pains in the cervix/vaginal area this week. I like to describe the latter sensation as a lightening bolt shooting up my girly bits. If you’ve had it before, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Luckily it doesn’t happen that often. My OB said it’s normal and nothing to be concerned about. However, I’m pretty sure if I told him my toe turned green and fell off he would say it’s totally normal. I guess the man has seen it all…

What else? Preggo insomnia is back. Earlier this week I was convinced I was getting contractions in the middle of the night because I woke up with really weird pains in random spots of my stomach. They went away thankfully, so maybe it was just the good old Braxtons doing a practice run. All I remember is waking up in pain and thinking, “Thank God for epidurals” – before finally drifting off to sleep. lol.

Other than those symptoms, I’m really not having many other symptoms and overall I feel pretty darn good. Life goes on!

My friend had twin girls a month ago and we threw a big potluck at her place this week. I got to hold and feed one of her baby girls to get some “practice” in. Aside from feeling like I was going to break this tiny little angel, I think I did OK. Whew. I can’t believe we’re going to have one of our own next month. I keep picturing what it will be like when we bring her home for the very first time. I’m guessing an unexpected poop explosion might be part of it!

Still going on my walks and loving them. I haven’t had to slow down much at all, but I’m sure I will a bit as the weeks go on. I’m happy with just getting out there and moving my body. Walking is so underrated! My doc thinks it will help prepare the body for labour…wouldn’t that be a nice bonus? Now that my lower back/sciatic area pain is almost gone, I’m also thinking of incorporating some prenatal yoga stretches back into my routine.

On the food front, my nausea is still gone (yay) and I have a strong appetite, but I’m getting really tired of our kitchen reno meals. I’m hoping to have a half-functional kitchen in another 1-1.5 weeks and I can’t wait to start cooking real meals again! I don’t want to see another piece of toast for a very long time!

Remember last week when I said I couldn’t be bothered to nest? Well, that was before the entire kitchen and family room got covered in dust, thanks to the countertop installation and some indoor grinding to install the cooktop. We had a big plastic drop sheet wall put up to contain the dust, but then we found out the installers removed it way too early and the dust got everywhere. Oh hell no. Needless to say, this kicked my nesting urges into overdrive. I cleaned all night long and I could’ve gone into the wee hours of the night but Eric made me go to bed. Do not mess with a 9 month preggo lady and her nest!

Hospital bag. Eric keeps telling me I need to start packing it! I’m putting it off. I did some reading online about what to bring and oh my…some of the suggested lists are LONG. I really don’t want to pack for a week-long vacay, you know what I mean? My goal is to keep it short and sweet. [This is coming from a classic over-packer, mind you…] We’re only a short drive to the hospital so it’s not like Eric can’t grab something if need be. Plus, from what I hear the hospital stocks some pretty snazzy underwear! Meow.

Anyway, feel free to leave your hospital bag suggestions…I’m all ears!

Hi! I am relatively new to your site as my family is vegan-curious but I really love the creativity in your recipes. Ahh…pregnancy! So exciting and strange with your first baby. First, let me say that walking and yoga will prove invaluable during labor! The yoga breathing alone will help you through contractions. I know you mentioned an epidural but keep on your feet and moving as much as you can for as long as you can. It will speed things up and you will meet your daughter even sooner! While epidurals are widely used and even pushed by many docs they can actually slow the whole process down. I’m sure you know all this and whatever you choose I hope your birth experience is wonderful. And trust your feelings…if you think baby may be making an appearance soon, trust that and pack your bag! Comfy Jammie’s and nursing bra, healthy, high protein snacks and something with sugar…your body will need it! I used honey sticks but glucose tablets are a good vegan choice. I totally over-packed but these items were definitely used! That feeling of disbelief that a human being is inside you continues after birth, especially with the first. I remember being amazed the nursed let me bring my first daughter home!!

Thanks for the food tips – I’ll have to look into glucose tablets! I didn’t know they even existed. :) Seems like a good solution if you don’t have an appetite.

My husband was frantically throwing things into a bag on our way out the door to the hospital, oh and I would have already been about 7cm at that point!!! Our daughter came 9 days early and super fast! We chose to labor at home as long as possible, and for some reason didn’t think to pack a bag till the last second. I also kept thinking I had all the time in the world to get things accomplished, but our little girl had a different idea!! Being slightly modest, and even after our doula said most woman end up naked during delivery, I still thought I would remain in a “delivery outfit”…..well, my gown lasted about 30min from check-in, you will not care at all when in the middle of it! Because we had to stay in the hospital for 48hrs, at the 24hr mark I did change into pants and a nursing top of my own….had we gone home after 24hrs I wouldn’t have changed out of the gown at all. Let’s just say I would rather the hospital have to deal with getting stains out than me out of my clothes. Other items I’m so glad I had were lotion, face and body, chapstick, and a hair brush. Oh, and definitely a pair of flip flops or slip on shoes! In the end it is such a short period of time, and my husband was able to drive home and back the 10-15min to grab me something. Hope this helps! Good luck with your labor and delivery!

Hospital bag: nursing bra, old pjs you don’t mind if they get a stain on them and ones that are easy to nurse in (I actually liked a pair of tights or yoga pants and a tank top), comfy clothing to go home in (yoga pants are good!), an older pair of underwear (again possible stains) sanitary napkins (I liked the longer ones with wings for the first couple days), flip flops (easy to slip on and off for getting in and out of bed), socks, a light robe, Boppy or other breastfeeding pillow, toiletries, camera, Phone and charger, and computer (to let us all know the good news ;)
Husband Bag: snacks, drinks and $ for delivery time (depending on how long it goes, he might need to refuel a bit, this way he won’t have to leave the room to do so), his swim trunks (If you are in the shower or tub and he want/needs to be in there with you), clean clothing for him (at least a shirt), his toothbrush.
Baby: carseat, clothing to go home in, blanket, pacifier (if you want the hospital to use a certain brand), diapers, wipes. I just let baby be in what the hospital provided until we went home, that way it was less things to worry about there.
Hope that helps! Blessings!

Leanne above nailed it! I changed into yoga pants (really roomy comfy cotton ones – nothing too fitting, of course) fairly quickly and a nursing tank. I think the baby wore the hospital clothes until we left so just a little cozy onesie and a little jambes would be good for going home. My son lived in the onsie/jammy combo until he was at least 3 months old I’m pretty sure. Bring some shampoo, conditioner, soap and maybe some moisturizer for face. I put on makeup too for the pictures – cheeky but I’m glad I did! cozy socks. I found I didn’t need a robe because I was so warm from hormones and holding and nursing the baby and you sort of hang out in a bed anyway that first day so you have blankets… I had the man run over to Whole Foods for dinner and snacks. We were lucky to be so close! Very exciting to read this section. I love your blog

Thanks Jen! Awesome ideas. I picked up a couple Target nursing tanks today…love them already! And you totally reminded me that the WF is only a 2 min drive from the hospital…what could be better? That will take some pressure off what to pack for food, especially not knowing how many nights we’ll be there.

I agree with the above list–I’m 41 weeks pregnant with our third :) One thing I would add is “padsicles”. Take some maxi pads or size 1 diapers and lightly saturate them with water. Put wax paper or aluminum foil between each pad and freeze in a freezer bag. They are AMAZING to have in your undies during the first few days of recovery! Good luck, you will do AWESOME :)

OTMH has padsicles they supply, you just need to ask. I don’t know if that is your hospital but they cut you off on diapers pretty quick so pack lots with you. :)

I think they cut me off at 3. I had a full pack and probably went through half of it (new moms ALWAYS use more diapers) but I was also there for three and a half days. I would also take a super soft and warm receiving blanket to have the baby swaddled in as soon as she is born, babies seem to find a comfort in the blanket they are first swaddled in (maybe the smell?) and the hospital wont let you keep the blanket they use.

Wow 3 doesn’t seem like many at all! I’ll probably pack some more in the car just in case we run out. I also have two receiving blankets in the diaper bag. :)

It may depend on your hospital, as ours just automatically charged for the full pack that they gave us. To be safe I would bring a full pack. Do you have nappy cream with you? My firstborn was very sensitive to disposable nappies and got a nappy rash by Day 4 that wouldn’t go away even with medical advice on which cream to use. We gladly switched to cloth nappies and that was the end of it. We reusued the same nappies for #2 and will do the same for #3 on the way.
You might want to askt he lactaction consultant on which nipple cream for bfing that she recommends. My hospital gave us La Roche Posay lip balm since it’s also a mucus membrane and is hypoallergenic due to the tiny risk of a lanolin allergy. But there are a lot of chemicals in it so I tried lanolin and DD was fine. Since Whole Foods is nearby, if you decide you want some you could ask Eric to pick it up.

What I did instead of soaking them in water was soak them in a healing herbal “Tea” like mama earth angel baby healing bath and freeze those. Then you get the ice benefit as well as the healing herbs:) You’ll need full-bum granny panties with them for sure though!

Looks like you’ll read this with your adorable third in your arms! Congratulations! My #2 stuck it out till 41.5 weeks but we are 14 wks with #3 and I’m going to a chiropracter once a month this time in case my ligaments were holding DS up and away from the cervix where he couldn’t burrow down to signal labour to begin. Food for thought should you want #4 :)

#3 is here! She came swiftly as soon as the Dr issued her eviction notice ;) I can’t encourage the chiropractic enough–I saw my chiro with #2 every two to three weeks and she came beautifully at 37 weeks. I believe the adjustments made her descent easier. This time around my schedule didn’t allow those appointments and I think if I did have them, number 3 wouldn’t have had so much trouble descending.

This is a weird thing to tell someone I don’t know but I feel like you’re an old friend from reading your blog for years now so…I would bring lots of extra underwear. The hospital does provide some snazzy ones but their supplies for everything just stop suddenly. I didn’t really need anything during the labour part other than some music and my husband. The hospital staff was amazing and very helpful. I remember being so worried about it but they take such good care of you there really isn’t anything to be worried about (I know it’s impossible not to worry). Good luck! You’ll do great!

I had my family bring my own birthing ball after I found out the hospital ones were a lot smaller (and flatter!) than my own. I wish I would’ve had it when I first went to the hospital.

I actually loved the hospital underwear!! Honestly, you feel so swollen and sore “down there” that having those loose, stretchy mesh undies are the best, especially when you are changing those huge hospital pads every hour or two. I brought some extra pairs home with me and they were all I wore for the first week or so.

Other than that, I found I way over-packed. I was so caught up with my baby girl–and was sore/not moving around too much– that I didn’t change out of the hospital gown at all on that first day postpartum.

I was so glad to have my own toiletries for when I took a shower, and after that I finally put on a real pair of clothes (comfy PJs). We went home after about 24 hours, but I can imagine even on that second day I probably would’ve kept the same clothes on. Bring your phone and charger, but I would’nt even bother with an Ipad or computer. You will have plenty to do with your baby and with any visitors coming in!

Oh…do bring your own snacks though! I ate a couple hospital Neal’s,butbibwouldve been so much happier with food I brought…

Best of luck! It will be the best experience of your life!!

Consider taking some earplugs and a sleep mask or bandana. Nurses and techs come in all night long, and while they’ll still wake you up, they’ll help drown out the extra noise and light. I wish I’d had some. If you’re planning to breast feed take a nursing pillow so you can practice while lactation consultants are there to help in case you need it. Comfy pjs and sweats are a must and separates are best so you can just pull up your top to nurse, and at least one nursing bra/tank. And pack an extra empty tote-bag for all the stuff the hospital gives you (diapers, wipes, fancy underwear and gigantic pads).

Pack your hospital bag. Seriously. Do it now. If things move fast and unexpectedly you will be so grateful to be able to just grab it and go. Especially in the middle of the night. Make sure you include a t-shirt and underwear for Eric (just in case you have a longer stay). Bring flip flops!! My wife and I got wicked athlete’s foot from the hospital shower. (and this was in a nice hospital!)

You look amazing!

Also, I really appreciated a comfy/soft nursing tank top and comfy pants for going home. I was so hot and sweaty from the hormones I didn’t want to wear anything else. I lived in that outfit. I bought three tanks and three pairs of pants.

OK, fine. i’m still wearing them a lot and little guy is 11 months old.

Pack an extra outfit for yourself and hubby, comfortable pjs and slippers, snacks, nursing bras, toothbrush & toothpaste, camera (or camera phone, whichever you’re using) & charger. For baby – diapers, coming home outfit, hat, wipes, carseat, blanket, swaddler

I chuckled at the poop explosion comment. Once your milk comes in (usually around 3-5 days) and baby really starts feeding frequently, poop explosions will start happening (I’m talking out the diaper, up the back explosions lol). Be prepared for baby’s first poop though :)

Bunchafarmers stain stick really works – even on my daughter’s super stain-y (not a word, sorry) baby poop. My mother-in-law just gave me one to try and I am totally in love with it (and its natural). You can google it if you’re interested or I bet your local health food store would have it.

I use Echo Clean for baby all of our laundry (we have some sensitive skin here in our household). Like this one, but for babies http://www.vipsoap.com/cart/2X-Liq-Laundry-1.5L.html.

If you’re using disposable diapers, then you’re more likely to get poop blowouts (out the legs, up the back kind), but if you’re using cloth diapers, I found much less blowouts. The cloth seems to hold in the poop better. :) I used a separate laundry detergent for cloth diapers because you’ll need to get safe detergent for cloth diapers. I used this one http://rockingreensoap.com/

I totally agree with the cloth diaper comment. I was having to change my baby’s clothes at least 3 times a day for the blow outs (usually out the legs), and NOT ONE blow out with the cloth diapers yet. Love love the cloth.

Seconded on both counts! Cloth diapers are AWESOME–never had a poop explosion, and Rocking Green is the best laundry soap–I applied soap right to stains and diapers stayed snowy white! (I also use RG for all of my laundry now and and completely happy with it.)

Totally agree, ladies! Cloth nappies saved us so much money, they pay for themselves within a few months, and it was really much easier to put my newborn down and throw in a wash than take the trash out (full of disposable diapers), or ask DH at midnight to get us some diapers asap. Have heard great things about RG but it’s unavailable here, I used a German liquid fine washables detergent that our eco baby store recommended, just 1/3 of a capful per wash. A liter of it lasted us the better half of a year, easily. Granted I might not have done cloth if we hadn’t had a washing machine at home (we have no dryer but it was fine). There is a great cloth nappy calculator for deciding when the price point of nappies & laundering breaks even with disposables from the Diaper Pin, just Google ‘cloth diaper calculator’. Yay for cloth!

Anna, sounds like you had a lot of excitement with poop explosions! It only happened once to us between our two babies, because we used cloth nappies with swimwear elastic sewn holding in the leg and waist ruffles, and a wool culotte over it (my DD’s skin couldn’t tolerate the plastic machine washable covers). This kept our baby clothing bill down since we didn’t need many changes of clothes, but our crèche only used disposable nappies and they required us to buy more clothes after the inevitable poop explosions. ‘Sposies use just a fine elastic thread to hold in the leg and waist, so they are susceptible to leaks, but washable ones are made to hold up through hundreds of washings. We also needed to buy nappy cream for the ‘sposies since they don’t breathe. It’s astonishing how many things just a simple nappy changes.

Ah so exciting!! I asked my husband what he thought was most useful because I was so busy (ie in pain) that I didn’t go near my bag once, but he did! Change of clothes, underwear (big is best!), socks, shoes for the shower and walking around the ward, (Eric needs the most comfortable shoes he owns because he will be on his feet a LOT!). Toiletries for both of you, food for both of you, especially if the hospital food is not your thing, you will be hungry and need some good nourishment! Eric will need snacks and a packed ‘lunch’ because he might not be able to go out and get food whenever he feels like it, especially if it’s an intense labour. Music and portable speakers are good, if you have music you enjoy to help breathe or give you something to concentrate on during contractions.
Not long now!!!

Instead of the mesh wire underpants I loved men’s boxer shorts, in a big size. In the beginning I used my husband’s but they got really stretchy, so I asked my mom to buy some cheap ones. Really comfortable, I used them for at least a month! It keeps the big pads in place and feels really nice. I left some extra clean ones in a basket near the toilet because sometimes I couldn’t reach the toilet fast enough (I would feel the need to use the toilet and had to use it RIGHT NOW which I didn’t always make in time, because the pelvic muscles are so stretched. Why doesn’t anyone ever talk about that part? Hahaha!)

I think I brought yoga pants to the hospital with me, but once bébé made his entrance (*ahem*), I didn’t want to wear constricting bottoms! I brought a light robe, which was nice for that long slow walk I made down the hallway when I was going STIR CRAZY (and for when visitors are there). Also, I needed some throat lozenges after delivery–my throat was sore from moaning through contractions. I tried not to pack too much, but I think we all do. I was definitely fine hanging out in the hospital gown after labor. I figured, why get stains on MY clothes?

Regarding practicing w/ another baby: I got to hold at least 3 friends’ newborns in my last month of pregnancy! Isn’t it strange, when you have your own cooking away in your belly?!

Yea I can totally see that about yoga pants feeling constricting. Plus, if I by chance need an emergency c/s that will be the last thing I’d want to put on. A robe sounds perfect!
It was funny holding a newborn knowing one was inside me! My belly did make a nice “table” though…no nursing pillow required! haha

Don’t forget all your lactation boosting foods/snacks and have the pump on stand-by at home in case you need it brought in for unforeseen circumstances. Breast feeding can be difficult to get started the first few days. I assumed it would be the most natural thing in the world, but it took some time to teach the baby to eat and I had to pump quite a bit at first before producing enough milk/syncing our schedules.

You look great! I also kept walking until our little girl arrived, and I think it helped with the delivery.
I was supposed to start mat leave at 38 weeks, and was so looking forward to having 2 weeks for myself before all the chaos would start! She had other plans though, and decided to arrive at exactly 37 weeks. Just full term, but very healthy and a speedy delivery. We were home within 5 hours of leaving for the hospital! We had just installed the car seat that afternoon, since I had some weird feelings, but not expecting to need it so soon!
We also packed a big bag for the hospital, but all we used was the new born outfit. I even went home in the same shirt I wore going into the hospital. So classy LOL Luckily it was 4 am when we went home.
So maybe I’m not a great help on that front! What I’ve heard do is lib balm is a must. Hospital air seems to be dry. And they gave me underwear for after that I even washed because it was so comfortable. Ok, maybe tmi :)

You’ll do great, and I think being calm beforehand really helped me with it all.
Good luck with the last little bit!

I just discovered your site today! I am on maternity leave and I have been looking for some new healthy recipes to try! Congratulations on your pregnancy! The last few weeks are the hardest….at least that’s what I found! I would just get so excited to meet my new little one! Those online lists of what to bring to the hospital are very thorough! I followed them and had so much stuff we could hardly move around the room! There were a few items I am happy we brought. The iPad this time which gave us lots to do, music to listen to etc! I was glad to have my lulu lemon pants to wear home and a special outfit for my new guy to wear. Pack some treats to your husband! Oh, don’t forget flip flops to wear in the shower and around the hospital. Wishing you all the best!

My water broke at 35 weeks 6 days and my son was born 24 hours after. SO PACK YOUR BAGS!! ;) also you never know how long you may have to stay at the hospital. My son suffered some jaundice then low white blood cell count and we stayed for 5 nights. I hope everything goes well with your labour and baby girl but you should maybe pack for the 24-48 hours of hospital stay and keep an extra bag at a parents or in your house for someone to bring if you stay longer. I bought a pretty pusher (so I wouldn’t have to wear a hospital gown) but I felt too embarrassed to wear it on the day. I remember being soo hot wearing the hospital gowns (2 of them) that I wished I had put it on. Good luck!

Pack your own food. I am a nurse and I actually work in labor and delivery. I had my first baby 11 months ago and the only thing I really missed was real food. Hospital food just doesn’t cut it. I actually never eat in our hospital cafeteria and this is a very nice hospital. When I had my baby my family brought my husband and I meals.
The other thing I really wanted was chapstick and hair ties. Your lips get dry from breathing through contractions and from the hospital air and my long hair was always in the way.
I only brought a going-home outfit for me and one for my daughter. Like “Amy R” above, I decided to let the hospital linen service deal with any stains and let myself relax.
Congratulations and enjoy! Having my daughter was the most amazing and empowering experience of my life so far. :)

I dont think this has been mentioned but I cannot recommend highly enough to purchase some super luxurious body wash to use in the shower once baby is born. I felt like I had run a marathon after giving birth and while I felt completely astonished and invincible afterwards, the pampering for my sore and tired body was absolute heaven. The hospital where I gave birth also had volunteers coming around giving foot massages (so nice and helps get rid of all the late third trimester swelling), so some foot massage lotion and a willing masseuse is also wonderful. Hugs to you at this exciting time xx

I tried to scan most comments but I am also trying to nurse my little one to sleep so this may be repeating:
Toilet Paper! You won’t be doing much wiping, more blotting but the toilet paper I was supplied with would disintegrate and stick to my bottom. When it is such a mess down there and you really don’t want to look, having to pick remnants of toilet paper off is not on the list of favorites.
I ended up completely naked except a head band (pony tails became bothersome to me especially with an epidural and being on your back. And after I spent my time in yoga pants, nursing tank and one of the little robes they provided.
Loose shoes for going home in, my feet were really swollen I could barely fit my snowboots.
Baby book if you want to try and get their foot and hand prints in it.
And the hospital underwear and pads are great for the first days but if you end up with an extended stay, your own underwear and pads are a godsend. Super duper overnight with wings heavy max flow, but still smaller than the hospitals.

Hi Ange,
I am so excited for you! Can’t wait to see your little baby girl!
Well, the fist time you bring her home…that will be a very emotional moment, I guess. I would be weeping with joy :). Oh, and Sketchie will be so curious – he’s a cat, after all; and babies do smell so good and clean. Well, unless they sport a full diaper, that is….

What to pack in the hospital bag? I’d say something you would not expect, like a fancy nightgown, preferably lace. You know, for those fist photos where new moms usually look like every hour of labour they went through. This way you can omit the nightgowns they give you in the hospital LOL…

Anyway, I wish you all the best and a short labour, of course. You two will be great parents! Keep us posted, will you?
