32 Weeks

August 1, 2014

19weeks32weekspregnant

Week 32 finds the baby measuring roughly 3.5-4 pounds and 16-19 inches in length.

In the words of Michelle Tanner – whoa baby!

I definitely think baby had another big growth spurt because my belly has popped again (or so Eric tells me) and my weight has gone up another few pounds in less than a week. Her movements are also more intense. Sometimes she karate chops my right rib or shifts positions and I’m amazed by her strength. All in all, I kinda feel like a kangaroo with a baby in my pouch. Totally normal, hah. I can only imagine how it will feel in 7 more weeks…scary/amazing all at once.

Now that my belly is getting heavier, I notice myself slowing down a bit. I walk slower, get in and out of bed slower (often with a small grunt…I honestly can’t help myself), and I generally don’t feel like rushing around for anything or anyone. Eric and I joke that my new theme song is “Wiggle” because he says I have a wiggle when I walk now. I’m waiting for a You Tube parody video of preggo ladies dancing to the that song. With a few lyric changes, it could work!

After my baby shower a couple weeks ago, I started to feel super tired. At first I chalked it up to being run down from a busy month, but when it persisted I mentioned it to my OB. He sent me to get my iron & B12 checked just to be sure. My B12 came back great, but my iron was on the low end of the normal range which probably explains some of the extra fatigue. I read that blood volume can increase around 50% in pregnant women so it’s very common to have dips in iron levels, especially during the third trimester. So, I’ve increased my daily 25mg iron supplement to twice a day just to make sure my levels don’t fall below normal. I’ve been doing this for almost a couple weeks and have noticed less fatigue already. I’m also trying to be more mindful of eating iron rich foods (such as pumpkin seeds, tofu, blackstrap molasses, beans/lentils, etc) paired with vitamin C rich foods (like lemon/citrus juice). I’m glad to catch it early because I need my energy these last several weeks!

I took this week off walking to give my body some rest. I’m already anxious to get back to it though and I think I will go for a walk this weekend. Also going to swim outside…yay!

I totally jinxed myself in my 30 week post when I said my rib pains reduced by half and my sleep was doing awesome. The rib pains have been bad again (probably related to the growth spurt) and I’m back to icing my right rib and back on the couch at night. Insomnia has also returned and I’m waking up at random hours and unable to fall back to sleep. After not having many weird dreams throughout the pregnancy, I’m now having really strange baby-related dreams this week! You really don’t want to know…trust me.

Food wise, I’m all over the map lately. My nausea came back for a few days this week (I hear this is common in the 3rd tri). I have days when nothing really sounds appetizing and other days when I’m eating non-stop. It’s so random. One day I crave sweets and the next day I want nothing to do with them. Just like in the 1st trimester, I’m craving salt and vinegar potato chips once again. Still loving fruit. Gazpacho. Grilled tofu with peanut sauce and veggies (awesome BBQ meal). Semi-frozen peach slices (the best!). Healthy Carob Freezer Fudge (a new recipe I whipped up last week). Carob Banana “Frosties” (another new fav). I’m trying to motivate myself to post the recipes + take the photography.

We made some progress this week getting baby gear and things checked off the list. The car seat and stroller are now purchased. I washed all the baby clothing, blankets, sheets, swaddlers, etc and have almost everything hung up or put away in drawers. I also booked a newborn photography session, a car seat inspection class, and a prenatal breastfeeding info session with a lactation consultant from my doula’s group (two more sessions are included after the birth – yay!) It sure is busy the last couple months. As long as baby girl doesn’t show up early, we’ll hopefully have most of our ducks in a row by mid-September. And if we don’t, I know we’ll get by just fine.

Can you believe it’s August 1st today? Happy (long) weekend!

Looking fantastic and you seem so efficient!! I also have to say here (in case anyone thinks that the iron deficiency is due to being vegan), i ate beef all through my pregnancy (i normally dont) and i was iron deficient as well. Those iron pills made a world of difference for me! Hope you feel better soon !

Very true – I know many pregnant friends with low iron who also ate a lot of red meat. I think any time your blood volume goes up by over 40% it’s bound to be challenging for anyone! Anemia also runs in my family so I’ve always had to keep an eye on it since I was a teenager. I’ve been iron deficient in the past when I was a meat eater too. I’ve now learned to nip it in the butt before it gets bad!

Looking after yourself is the way to go. You’ll get lots of exercise once baby is here so don’t stress it. Best of luck from B.C. Happy long weekend to all 3 of you. Love your recipes & book. Fed my meat eating friends your Fiesta Potato Tacos last night and they LOVED them, as do I. :)

I love comparison photos! I did a comparison today of me at 26 weeks vs. 36 weeks and it’s crazy; I thought my bump was big then! Lol.

I agree, the last couple months sure are busy ones! I had a surge of nesting today and got my carseat installed, washed some blankets, put batteries in the swing, etc. :)

Wishing you some well deserved sleep before the baby comes! xx

hah I know what you mean…it’s all relative I guess! Eric keeps saying ‘wait until you are 40 weeks and you will think your 32 week bump was tiny!’ hah…probably.
Nice work on getting your stuff completed! It feels so good to check those things off the list.

Hi Angela. I was told the same – low in iron. I am taking iron supplement now + doctor has mentioned to eat more greens & raisins. When can you do a photography session for newborn (at how many weeks/months)? My belly is growing a lot ( 34.5 weeks now) & it will grow more! Sometimes it seems that my skin just can not stretch anymore…:)

Hey Elena,

Usually the newborn photographer likes to have the session done before 10 days to 2 weeks old – they grow so fast!

Hi Angela, relax, as your sweet little girl grows into the remaining space she won’t have any room to build up enough momentum for a karate chop. You’ll be fine. Glad to hear you are tolerating iron pills well and your fatigue is ebbing. I had pg anemia and hyperemesis gravidium so I couldn’t keep the iron down till after the birth, so I’m really happy you can take them. Have you thought about a chiropractor for the rib pains, nausea (yes nausea) and time to time sciatica? I’m going to start seeing my neighbor/chiropractor in a couple weeks when I get into the second trimester–only waiting for my next ob visit for a doctor’s order. I went to one with #2 from 33wks who was breech and had a successful VBAC. Walking with Dancer’s blog has a lot on a chiropractor and pg. HTH.
Oh and thanks for your book, I bought it the e-version!

Hi Angela!!
I just discovered this page a couple of weeks ago! I love your updates! I am 34 weeks, so just a wee bit in front of you :) I can commiserate with the rib pain. I feel it most when driving- that darn right side!! Ice definitely helps too!

Thanks for mentioning the fatigue. I have been soooo tired this week and I wonder if the low iron could be the cause. I will definitely bring it up with my midwife!

7 weeks to go! Congrats lady! Can’t wait to “meet” your little lady!!

You are looking wonderful! I’m 27 weeks and am having many of the same “issues” as you. Some days I am so hungry and other days food is completely unappetizing. My food swings (as I’ll call them) have been my biggest challenge this pregnancy because I’m not as passionate about food except salt n’ vinegar chips and green smoothies-thank goodness for green smoothies!

I was also experiencing some heavy fatigue and on the advice of my midwife I am now taking an extra iron supplement which has helped a little bit. I’m starting to wonder if I should just stop running altogether because the days I run, I can barely function. But I love running so much:(

Take care and best of luck in your ongoing journey, I’ll look forward to hearing about Week 33!

Two words: Floravital Iron. I had such a hard time with low iron/iron supplements. A midwife FINALLY (7th pregnancy) hooked me up with Floravital & it’s been the only thing that helps. (No nausea & I can actually absorb it.) You look adorable!! ;-)

Hi Angela,

I love the Full House reference!

You are the most adorable pregnant lady I have ever saw. I think on your last pregnancy update, you posted about reading all the birth stories and I’d like to suggest a blog to you.

dover (dot) tumblr (dot) com

She has had two babies, two “natural” (drug free/vaginal) deliveries and used a doula both times. I think they might be of interest to you.

Best of luck for the rest of your pregnancy!

I follow a plant-based diet as well and I had the same drop in iron that you mentioned. I upped my supplements and within a month or so they said my levels had greatly improved. Made me happy to know that supplements helped! Love seeing the picture comparison above! It’s so amazing what the female body does!

Wow, sounds like you are pretty on top of things – I’m impressed! I’m a procrastinator by nature. Due in 2 weeks and just got the clothes washed over the weekend. Everything seems way less urgent my second time around! Wishing you better sleep soon!

Hi Angela,
I am 43, vegan for more than 20 years and have two wonderful daughters (11 and 3). Our whole family is mostly on vegan diet (I included some raw goat and sheep milk products in girls diet) and we are all extremly healthy!
Just about iron deficiency during pregnancy – I didn’t have problem with both pregnancies but as I couldn’t take iron supplementation due to severe all day long morning sickness, I was drinking small amounts of nettle and dandeloin juice every day during my last 8 weeks. Iron levels rised unbelievably!
Thank you for the wonderful recipies you share with us! We all enyoj them immensly!
Best wishes,
Lara

Also wondering if you have posted about all the prenatal supplements you have taken/are taking? Curious for a friend :) thanks!

Hi Angela!

Congrats on making it to week 32! You look fabulous. As a mother of twin boys (who are now two) may I suggest taking Unisom? It is a safe over the counter sleep aid (recommended by my doctor) and was the only thing that did the trick. I slept wonderfully that last tri when I was at my biggest (boys were 7’1″ and 6’11” when born at 38 weeks).

I am loving your cookbook and sharing it with everyone I know!

Another sneaky way to get a big bump of iron in the diet is to whip up some marinara sauce ( or anything tomato based) in a cast iron skillet! If you google it there is lots of info…wishing you luck in the final stretch. And lots of rest as well!
