St. Patrick’s Day is coming up! Are you doing anything fun? I’m hosting a get together on Tuesday, so I’ve been planning a green themed menu to serve on the big day.
Smoothie bowls have been quite the sensation for a long time now, but I think this might be only the second smoothie bowl I’ve made. The truth is, I just love the efficiency of throwing things into a blender and guzzling it down in a glass – a few minutes seems to be all the time I have in the morning. I don’t want to fuss with smoothie bowls. But I figured it would be nice for a special themed breakfast! Plus, sometimes I need to remind myself not to inhale my food and sitting down to a bowl helps me slooooow down a bit. So instead of taking me 20 seconds to inhale it now takes me 60 (breastfeeding hunger is no joke). Anyway, this bowl is a nutritious way to kick off the day, especially if you plan on indulging later on!
The flavour is inspired by the popular Key Lime Pie, but with a green tea twist. Get it – TEA lime pie instead of KEY? I truly outdid myself with this title, I know. Imagine what I could do on a full night’s sleep?!
Ok joking aside, Matcha Green Tea Powder happens to pair lovely with banana and avocado, but it’s an optional booster ingredient so not to worry if you don’t have any on hand. The smoothie is still amazing without it. However, if you do stock Matcha it adds a wonderful energizing element to smoothies and a nice antioxidant boost. Since it’s fairly bitter, a little bit goes a long way; I only used 1/4 teaspoon in this smoothie. If you don’t think you will consume a whole tin, you might want to try out the single serving packs that are available in many grocery stores now. I store my opened tin in the fridge for maximum freshness.
The hydrating base is made up with coconut water which might be a great way to start the day if you plan on indulging in drinks later on. A frozen banana and avocado make it ultra creamy and lightly sweet, while lime juice and lots of zest give it a tangy, aromatic kick. It’s basically all of my favourite flavours wrapped into one kick butt smoothie bowl! We all know that smoothie bowls are so fun because of all the toppings you get to add, so I topped my bowl with melted coconut butter (which solidifies upon hitting the cold smoothie), granola, hemp hearts, and large flake coconut. I purposely made the smoothie on the thicker side so the toppings would sit nicely on the top and not sink through – that’s key!

This is one of my all-time favourite smoothie bowls—and it's one of the most popular on the blog! Dig into the tropical flavours of lime, coconut, banana, and avocado with some baby spinach and Matcha green tea powder thrown in for an extra boost. The flavour reminds me of a creamy, tart, and sweet Key Lime Pie!
Ingredients
For the smoothie:
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) coconut water
- 1 cup fresh baby spinach
- 1 large frozen banana
- 1/4 cup avocado
- 2 teaspoons lime zest*
- 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon (20 mL) fresh lime juice
- 2 to 3 ice cubes
- 2 teaspoons (10 mL) pure maple syrup, or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon Matcha green tea powder
Topping ideas:
- Granola**
- Sliced banana and mango
- Melted coconut butter
- Large flake dried coconut
- Lime zest
- Hemp hearts
Directions
- Add all the smoothie ingredients into a high speed blender and blend on high until smooth. Adjust sweetness if desired.
- Pour into a bowl and sprinkle on the toppings of your choice. Enjoy with a spoon!
Tip:
- * It's easiest to zest the lime before juicing.
- ** For a homemade granola recipe, try the Ultimate Nutty Granola Clusters in The Oh She Glows Cookbook (page 31), my Lightened Up Summer Granola, or The Perfect Granola (found in The Oh She Glows app).
Ohh i love thicker smoothie bowls and have yet to try matcha powder but this looks like a winner and a good reason to try it out!
Hi Angela- do you have a favorite brand of matcha?
just had it for lunch! it was even better than i expected! i didn’t have the machta (sp?) and i used lemon bc i don’t have lime. my 2 year old enjoyed as well!
Oh my gosh, Angela this is INCREDIBLE! So much green goodness and matcha magic! We’d love to send you some of ours to try – SUCH big fans of yours. Do you have an e-mail address we could reach you on? Keep up the incredible work. So inspired by your journey and the wonderful work you are doing xxxx
I just made a similar smoothie bowl but with no lime, I think the lime would definitely improve the flavor. Can’t wait to try this!
Where do you get you Matcha Green Tea Powder?
Can you recommend a good match brand? I checked your tea shoppe and noticed you don’t carry it. I’ve tried shopping for matcha in the past and felt so overwhelmed by all the grades and options available. Some have loads of sugar added. Btw, I love your blog and cookbook. Your recipes has helped bridge the great divide between my vegan diet and my man’s carnivorous ways.
This looks amazing!! & I am really starting to crave smoothies again :)
Thanks, I saved the recipe – was looking for something green! Hugs from www.ohhappydane.com
What an excellent idea, and I like the ingredients! I can already smell the aroma from the lime!
Tried this tonight! Delicious even without the matcha powder
This looks like the perfect healthy breakfast for St. Patty’s day! I haven’t tried making a smoothie bowl for the same reasons as you, but might have to break that for this version :)
I tried this recipe this morning and I loved it! I tend to inhale my smoothies too, so I like making them this way! Smoothie bowls are great because you can sit down and enjoy them. Sometimes I find with smoothie bowl recipes that the consistency is just too liquidy. This came out thick and creamy! I used a frozen avocado, which may have helped. I did not use matcha, but this has inspired me to go out and buy some!
Tried this and it was really lovely. The avocado & banana made a silky slightly sweet base–terrific. Mine was with economical frozen avocado and a fresh banana, but even with a Vita-Mix a frozen avocado takes a long time to blend so I chopped it into pieces first. Highly recommended smoothie bowl :) Angela, on the sleep deprivation side, I liked your witty title and with my 2-wo baby I actually thought it said ‘Key’ not ‘Tea’ – it was a growth spurt last night, LOL. Only when I read what you said about the title did I realize you’d made a play on words. Thank goodness for maternity leave!
In my experience, matcha is only bitter when the water is too hot. I usually make it with water at 70 degrees. But before I add the matcha to the hot water, I first whisk it in about a tablespoon of room temperature water.
Anything to do with matcha is always good! Looks fabulous- thank you! xx
This looks so good! We should invite our friends over for an actual “topping party” and have them top their own!!
Thanks for the recipe :)
Oh. My. Word. This looks AMAZING! absolutely going to be trying this for St P’s! Thanks for the post!

It’s been a long time since I’ve been on your site, but many of my favourite staples came from here, so I thought I’d take a fresh look. This one looks amazing, I’m going to try it ASAP!
And I think it’s veru useful :-)
Hi Angela, thank you for this delicious recipe! It is super creamy and I love the lime flavor. I had some matcha tea stashed away that I forgot about so I was glad to find a new use for it. I will definetly be using it more often. I felt so energized after drinking it. Sorry! I did drink it but I’ll make it into a bowl next time. :) It was soo good!!
Thank you for all your delicious recipes!!
Just made thus after a long run…. What a treat it was so yummie and refreshing. Think I could be addicted. Thanks Angela .
FANTASTIC! I recently moved to Seattle and I was feeling a tad glum about missing my St Paddy’s Day parade in Boston today. Your Green Smoothie Bowl picked me RIGHT up. Thanks, Angela!
Wow, it looks great on the picture, i’ll definitively try it these days. I hope it’s gluten free, because i only eat gluten free food like these freshnlean.com/weekly-menu/. Thanks for posting :))
Ah, sooooo delicious! I think I’ll be making it tomorrow morning :)
Tapping party-Amazing! I love the flavor combination of this bowl. It looks incredibly nourishing!
Your photos are BEAUTIFUL. If the food tastes half as good as it looks, it’ll be amazing :)
I can’t wait to try this, Angela! Your Happy Digestion Smoothie has been a real hit with a lot of my clients.
This was fabulous! I have to admit I am still a little weirded out by the thought of eating a smoothie in a bowl (I don’t know why) so I made it in a class as usual. Didn’t have matcha, but I’m sure it would be even more delicious with! Very tropical.
This was sooooooooo yummy! I’ve been trying to eat more green smoothies since I’ve been pregnant and this definitely hit the spot. I would say it’s my favorite smoothie recipe right now. I can’t get over how much it tastes like the inside of a key lime pie. In fact, I think you could just add less coconut water, double the recipe, and then pour it in a nut crust and you would have key lime pie!
Thanks for sharing. I love your blog!
YUM! This tastes like a healthy margarita. Loved it!!!
I liked this smoothie bowl very much! I made it exactly as the recipe suggested, but added 1 tsp of matcha to get that extra kick. The lime flavour was very prominent so I almost would make it next time with a little less, to let the matcha shine through a bit more. But great blend of flavours and a nice change of pace from the usual green monster I make ;)
MMM looks soooo delicious!!! I am a long time matcha drinker. I will make this recipe on the weekend!
I also loove making coconut matcha yogurt and I sprinkle with dark chocolate!
If anyone is looking for a great matcha in australia I can recommend the brand i buy- Zen Green Tea (https://zengreentea.com.au). Good price and very good quality!
Angela- had this bowl for breakfast this morning! It is really good, and very satisfying to my preggo body;-) next time I will definitely garnish with more lime zest (I only used coconut shreds, hemp seeds, & a few crushed nuts), as mine didn’t turn out very tangy. Thanks:-D
Oh wow, I have been on a tea kick lately, this looks amazing! I need to start cooking more with herbal teas, it’s so good! Thanks for the recipe!
This is absolutely delicious! I’ve made it as a smoothie bowl and I’ve also drank it like a traditional smoothie. I love the combination of lime and matcha! I never would have thought to pair them together, but they make a good couple. Thank you for the great recipe!
Its lovely color made me try this and its amazing. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

I’ve been needing some inspiration for smoothie variations, this looks like heaven! Love the toppings idea too!
I love smoothie bowls, so I was excited to try this recipe. I added 2 tbsp of quick oats to give it a “doughy” texture and it was great! I will definitely be making it again :)
This is amazing. I drank it from a straw as a smoothie.
Looks amazing! Definitely on my list to try <3

I am excited to try this recipe – I usually make acai bowls, and this is a new and exciting take on a smoothie bowl. The green is so very spring and I’m looking forward to the flavors.
I just made this and I think it is the yummiest thing I have eaten in a long time. Love the melted coconut butter and the lime flavour together! Perfect for post workout.
Great recipe! I just love that there so many recipe for healthy and organic food these days. I guess more people a keeping an eye on their health. I love avocado because it’s packed with nutrients that all good for the body. Good jobs, I’m excited to try more recipes from your website.
This is gorgeous I made this with my daughter today :-)
OMG OMG OMG this looks AMAZING. I keep seeing recipes with match powder but have yet to use it – this may be the first recipe i use it in!!
I made this yesterday (just in a normal glass) without matcha and it was so phenomenal that I made it again today! As I’m English and don’t really use cups I worked out it’s about half an avocado, a handful of spinach and 175ml coconut water.
I also made the crispy quinoa cakes for dinner yesterday and they were such a success that I made your weekend kale salad for lunch today and have your toffee cinnamon oatmeal bars cooling in the fridge right now! Your taste for flavours is just genius and cooking this food is making me think about moving to a more plant-based diet (currently an omnivore). Thank you so much for all the inspiration.
It’s hard to find good macha recipes , this is certainly one!

Deliciou! I have an old bag of matcha I found in the back of a drawer, and this was a perfect way to use some of it. Didn’t have avocado or coconut water on hand, so I subbed a big spoonful of sunflower seed butter and used half almond milk, half water. Perfect for a hot morning!
I was just looking for green smoothie recipes and found this one in my travels. I had to comment about the breastfeeding hunger – holy Dinah, there is nothing like it! It’s equal to the exhauation the first few months… the gnawing hunger that’s almost constant! Congrats on the newest bundle of joy! (I know, I’m late, I’m late).
I would appreciate knowing calorie count, including fat content,
carbs, protein.
Please provide! Protein is my breakfast in the morning and carries me
for about 5 hours.
Thanks!
