25 Weeks

It was fun to do a few pictures in the nursery this week to give you a glimpse of how it’s coming along! I hope to post a few more progress pictures in here over the next few months. It will be a nice keepsake to look back on. Eric finished painting three of the walls a soft gray. The wall colouring above isn’t very accurate (I probably should’ve switched off the light before taking the photos). Oh well – see picture below as it’s a better representation. We’re doing an accent wall in a pink, yellow, and gray floral wallpaper (below) to give the room a nice pop of colour and a fun print. I’m so pumped that things are finally starting to come together!

Here is a peek of the colour scheme + wallpaper. I think it’s going to be quite lovely!

Eric finished painting the dresser yellow this week. The entire dresser didn’t set us back more than $100 so we’re very happy about that! We picked up some cute hardware knobs from Home Depot last night so those have to be installed and then I’m going to make homemade drawer liners. I think the yellow dresser is going to look really nice against the gray wall. We also picked up a used side table for $5 that we’re painting pink to pull from the colour in the wallpaper. Eric is going to build a bookcase which will be painted gray to make it pop off the wallpaper. This will all make much more sense when I have more pictures to show you! But yeah…I’m pretty excited and can’t wait to complete a few more crafts. Word on the street has it that Mimi (my mom) is going to paint her granddaughter a painting for the nursery too!

How I’m feeling physically: I’m still having lots of right lower rib and back pain (especially when sitting). I spoke with my OB about the rib pain and he thinks it’s due to the ribs expanding and stretching to make room for the baby. Man, it’s annoying. All for a good cause though…that baby needs room, I suppose! He recommends a mix of icing and heat for relief. He’s sending me for blood work just to make sure my liver is functioning ok, but he really doesn’t think it’s a liver issue.

Exercise: I took last week off of my weight/resistance routine to see if it would help my rib pain (no such luck), but I’ve kept up with my usual 60 min. walks every morning. I feel so great starting my day with a good walk. I usually bring some cold water with me to stay hydrated on warmer mornings.

Chiropractor: I had my first adjustment with the chiropractor this week and it went great. I was quite nervous as I’d never been to a chiropractor before, but it was honestly a breeze and there was zero discomfort. She went over my assessment results and I have a couple areas of my spine that are locked up (upper neck, middle spine) as well as my left sacrum. After my adjustment my rib pain was much less than normal for the rest of the day, so I’m really hopeful that these visits are going to help.

Food: After going through a period of not being interested in food, I’m happy to report that it’s improved a lot in the past 2 weeks. I wouldn’t say I’m back to normal (many of you say it won’t be back to normal until the placenta is out!), but it’s better than it was. I actually have motivation to create recipes again and I’ve been whipping up all kinds of amazing things in the kitchen (which is great because I’m banking recipes). Lately, I’m loving really cold drinks (coconut water and green smoothies), dark chocolate, fresh fruit galore (mango, watermelon, berries), and hot tea (Rooibos, fresh lemon ginger tea).

Baby names: We’ve finally made some progress in the name department. I created a Google doc (shared with Eric) a month or so ago, and we’ve both been adding our favourite names (and removing ones we no longer like). So far we both love two names (including the middle name) so this is major progress. It will be interesting if we stick with our favourite or end up on something totally different by the end.

Baby Clothing: So I realized that I never showed you the first clothing purchase I made for our baby girl. As soon as we found out the sex, I drove straight to Indigo to pick up this dress that I’ve had my eye on for months. I almost died when I saw it. Ok, that might be because I used to be a ballerina back in the day. She’s going to hate me for this, I’m sure. But mama’s gotta have a little fun right?

How I’m sleeping: The insomnia of the first and early second trimester is long behind me (yay!), but it was replaced with waking up a gazillion times in the night. Luckily, I can usually fall back to sleep very quickly. I wake up to pee a couple times during the night, several more wake-ups due to shifting positions, and then the baby likes to wake me up a couple times when she decides to have a dance party. It’s so cute though, I can’t complain. In the past week, I’ve also had some really VIVID dreams! Thankfully, no crazy nightmares yet (knock on wood), but I had this super random dream that I was a guest at Kim & Kanye’s wedding! lol. They were all super divas and I wasn’t wearing a nice enough dress so they weren’t going to let me in after all. It was quite hilarious actually.

LOL! Amazing dream!! And I LOVE that dress!!!!

The nursery looks soooo cute, I can’t wait to see how it looks once finished! :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 11, 2014 at 5:24 pm

hah ;) Thanks hun!

Nicole @ Broken Road Creative June 11, 2014 at 5:35 pm

I love the direction the nursery’s headed! That wallpaper is adorable! So is that outfit… My first baby is 5 now, so she almost never lets me pick clothes for her, so I’m totally looking forward to dressing this little girl in my belly, while she still lets me!

Audrey June 11, 2014 at 8:28 pm

The nursery looks awesome! I love the color scheme. :) And your dream is too funny, lol. ;)

Kirsten June 12, 2014 at 6:19 am

I love the nursery colors, I have to ask, what yellow is that? I’m not finding out the sex of ours, so want to do a grey, yellow and green nursery – that is my favorite yellow yet!
Must admit, I’m rather jealous that you’re enjoying your pregnancy so much, I keep hoping mine is going to follow suit! Congrats and looking forward to seeing the finished nursery :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 12, 2014 at 7:24 am

Thanks Kirsten! The yellow is Benjamin Moore Lemon Meringue :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 15, 2014 at 11:01 am

Just a warning Kirsten – the Lemon Meringue colour has a green undertone to it – we’re actually not loving it as much as we hoped.

Kirsten June 25, 2014 at 6:33 am

Oh no! I’ll have to keep looking for the time being, might make for too much green if my yellow has a green undertone with green as the other mail color! Thanks for letting me know :)

k June 12, 2014 at 8:07 am

Love the colours!! I did an Grey, white Chevron and yellow nursery with lilac accents.
I totally dress up my 11 month old girl in cutesy dresses! Can’t help it! Gotta have some fun while I have a say;)

Sophie June 12, 2014 at 11:50 am

The colours for the nursery are perfect! I love how they will totally work up until far in the future – not just ‘baby’ decor!

I so don’t blame you for picking up that dress, it is gorgeous Angela!

laura June 12, 2014 at 12:05 pm

You are positively glowing! Is it your pregnancy, or does your skin always look that great? Would you mind sharing what makeup you use? I follow a mostly vegan diet, but my skin doesn’t look half as gorgeous as yours!

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 13, 2014 at 10:05 am

Thank you Laura!
I alternate between 100% Pure foundation and Tarte clay foundation right now (and also love 100% pure eyeshadow). I’ll keep it in mind for a future post!

Kristin June 12, 2014 at 12:45 pm

You look gorgeous Angela! I wanted to share that I too had a lot of rib pain with my first pregnancy (and sadly broke my ribs from coughing with an illness during my second pregnancy but that’s another story). I found sitting for long periods of time was the pain culprit. A big reliever for me was to sit on an exervise ball and roll my hips around in a circle. Just a thought… best of luck.

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 13, 2014 at 9:56 am

My Dr. recommended an exercise ball too – need to pick one up! Thanks for the reminder. :)

Julie June 12, 2014 at 3:11 pm

Where did you score such a dresser? I’m hoping to find one for a similar price. Craigslist?

We already have an office blue room, and besides the fact that we don’t know the sex, we JUST painted it last year, so I don’t think we’ll be changing it. I’ll probably be decorating primarily with decals, white crib.

I’m 16 weeks (super nervous since I haven’t seen the baby since Week 13 and my next appt and am having similar back/rib pain, so maybe it’s time to see a chiropractor after all. I’ve never been to one either, so I’m just as nervous as you probably were!

Julie June 12, 2014 at 3:13 pm

My comment was messed up — meant to say that my next appt isn’t until next week.

I hate waiting and wish my hubby let me buy the dang doppler already. =) although I think I felt movement again… or gas.

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 13, 2014 at 9:58 am

We got the dresser at a second hand store! But Craigslist and Kijiji also have great finds.

LN June 12, 2014 at 6:17 pm

You look great! You have to do a ‘glowing face makeup’ tutorial one of these days :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 13, 2014 at 10:01 am

Thanks for the kind words :)

Lisa June 12, 2014 at 6:19 pm

The nursery looks great, and you look fabulous and are definitely glowing! Where did you get your shirt? Do you have any fav online or stores for maternity wear? So far i’m living in my yoga pants and a few maternity tank tops lol :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 13, 2014 at 10:00 am

Count me in for living in my yoga pants…seriously I’m amazed by how comfy they are (I just wear them under my belly a bit and it works great). The top is from A Pea In The Pod back in Feb. I haven’t had much luck with maternity clothing. I’ve mainly picked up a bunch of maternity tees and a maternity black tee shirt dress from Old Navy.

Jessica Champion June 12, 2014 at 10:09 pm

You look so amazing! I can’t believe you got to go to the wedding ;) if only in your dreams hehe.
I had chiro care my whole pregnancy and I found it really helped. I also had a doula who was amazing and I really hope you can have a natural birth. The nursery sounds beautiful and I wish I had a little girl to put in that dress. It is adorable. I have a little man so no pink dresses here ha!
All the best in the coming months!! Can’t wait to see your little bundle <3

Sandra June 13, 2014 at 12:18 am

You do look beautiful as usual, just extra beautiful. Love the dress and enjoy your precious baby girl.

Jen June 13, 2014 at 8:21 am

You look extremely tiny for 24 weeks are you sure your eating enough? My sister was vegan and her baby was born with a low birth weight because of her diet.

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 13, 2014 at 10:10 am

Yes I am. My dr. said I’m exactly where I should be with weight gain and other measurements. :) There are many factors that can contribute to a low birth weight baby, so I don’t think it’s fair to pigeonhole the vegan diet as the culprit.

Kathleen June 13, 2014 at 11:08 am

The grace with which you responded to this comment is an example of why I have been reading your blog for years.

I have a similar build to you and also had a vegan pregnancy and my belly pictures looked right on track with yours. I gained an appropriate amount of weight and gave birth to a healthy 6lb 9oz baby girl who is now a strong and vivacious 14 month old! Congratulations and thank you for sharing with us how a healthy vegan pregnancy can be achieved. You’re doing great!

Luci June 13, 2014 at 12:49 pm

I usually just read and don’t respond, but I had to chime in and say that you look amazing. Everyone gains weight differently, and wears it differently, too. I remained vegan throughout my pregnancy and gave birth to twins at 38.5 weeks–a 6lb 4oz girl and a 6lb 2oz boy–without a c-section.

Neither my doctors nor their pediatricians have had any concerns about my now active, thriving, vegan from conception, 18 month olds, and although they’re eating a lot now, they’re still nursing as well. Vegan diets can be healthy for ANY stage of life, and complications can be caused by a myriad of factors beyond the mothers’ control.

There is no need to try and create shame/guilt/alarm where there needn’t be–not that you need anyone else to tell you that!

Louise June 14, 2014 at 5:23 am

I have a thriving 9 month old following a vegan pregnancy. My obstetrician on hearing I was vegan said ‘well done’ – not the response I expected! It turned out that he had read the China Study and was therefore an advocate for a plant based diet. I expected my baby to be smaller than my first having been sucked in by all the myths and stereotypes (I was not vegan with bub#1) so was surprised when I gave birth to a 9lb13oz monster. Genetics trumped in the end I think! Both kids are vegan & as healthy as they come…

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 15, 2014 at 11:02 am

Thanks for sharing your experiences ladies!

Tamara June 16, 2014 at 1:45 pm

I think you look great. I’m actually one week behind you and my belly is also very small(I’ve only recently really started showing) and I eat meat(I’m paleo, so completely on the other end of the spectrum diet wise from you) so I think you are doing fantastic and there is nothing wrong with a vegan pregnancy! My sister is two days behind me in her pregnancy and she is at least twice as big as me.

I’m also having a girl and I am dying over that dress. I need to find out if I can buy it in the states. I wish I had known about it last week when I was visiting family in Ontario! We did buy her a cute pink sweat-suit from Roots that says “Canada” on it since she’s half Canadian from her daddy!

Hailey June 13, 2014 at 10:09 am

My question is, how are your toes so perfectly painted??? I’m 27 now (yay third trimester!) and I just really don’t think I can reach them anymore. I’m going to see if I can get my husband to help out with that. :-) You look wonderful!

My pain so far has been lower than my ribs and I get sharp, shooting pains when I walk and the doctor says it’s round ligament pain. Have you had any of that at all? Although, I’m sure if I was walking an hour a day I may not be struggling with the pain!

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 13, 2014 at 12:56 pm

hah painting the toes was a BIG effort! I don’t know how long I’m going to be able to paint them myself. ;) Good thing it lasts so long on the toes..
I’ve had some round ligament pain that comes and goes, but it hasn’t been too bad thankfully.

Heather June 13, 2014 at 11:33 am

OMG – cutest dress ever!!!!! I love to nursery – so pretty!!!

I think you look great – healthy and glowing!

Heather June 13, 2014 at 11:33 am

oops should have been “I love the nursery”

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 15, 2014 at 11:02 am

Thanks Heather!

Autumn June 13, 2014 at 8:33 pm

Congratulations! I’m a huge fan of your recipes, I did not realize until now you are pregnant! Funny thing is, I too am pregnant and also in my 25th week! Sorry if you’ve already mentioned it before, but when are you due? I’m due on Sept. 22.. So happy for you! and thank you so much for being an awesome chef and sharing your delicious and nutritious recipes!
Much much love,
Autumn <3

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 15, 2014 at 8:50 am

Hey Autumn, Looks like we both have the same due date! Too funny. Congrats + good luck with your pregnancy!

Amy June 14, 2014 at 10:08 am

Hi Angela, I love your blog and it is one of the ones that inspired me to start my own. Thank you for sharing the baby stuff. I am newly wed, and we have nnooooo plans on a baby any time soon!! but it’s neat to hear how pregnancy is on a plant based lifestyle! hope it all goes well and congrats to you and Eric!

Jill June 14, 2014 at 10:28 am

As an older Mama, my baby is 14, I found my eyes welling with tears looking at your pictures. You look darling and the joy you are going to feel over being a mother will trump any other experience of your life. I am so happy for you. Treasure it all, even the aches and pains. : )

Angela (Oh She Glows) June 15, 2014 at 8:47 am

Jill you are so sweet! Thank you so much for your kind words. :)

Elena Perez June 14, 2014 at 2:17 pm

Angela, nice wallpaper! And you look great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Natalie June 15, 2014 at 7:42 pm

That wallpaper is adorable! I can’t wait to see the whole nursery! Will you be doing a house tour post? I would love to see your new kitchen where all the magic happens!

Jess June 17, 2014 at 10:02 am

What a darling little dress! I have to say there certainly is not as much “fun” dress up clothing for boys. My little Woodrow is 18 months now, but I always tell him I’ll happily buy him a tutu if he wants one to play with! They are just so cute!

Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health June 18, 2014 at 9:56 am

I would be shocked if it was a liver issue considering your lifestyle. As uncomfortable as it feels, your bump is adorable and you look great!

I was also wondering about your food cravings. One of my friends has been a vegetarian for years but recently she got pregnant and her and her husband started eating meat again.
After ten years, I don’t think I could ever go back but it seems like pregnancy does this to women sometimes. I’m curious about your experience with it. Do you find yourself craving animal products more now that your pregnant?

Kirsten June 25, 2014 at 6:44 am

I’m not Angela, but I can tell you that I’m not vegetarian or vegan, and being pregnant has turned me almost vegetarian! I can not STAND meat, chicken or fish! Baby’s make the body do unexpected things!

Blue July 21, 2014 at 7:22 pm

Oh my gosh, your blog is literally my favourite. Sadly, I must confess I have not been on in awhile. Too busy with work and all, but I’m pregnant as well, and everyone has been astonished by the fact I’m still vegan while pregnant. Along with the endless lectures of it not being healthy to have a baby be vegan so early on, since I plan on raising my baby vegan, and I was wondering if you’re planning the same? I’d love to hear about it and see if maybe you could post on how to’s? I have no idea if I should make meal plans or what, I’ve been doing research, but there isn’t much.

Angela (Oh She Glows) July 22, 2014 at 8:46 am

Hi Blue, Thank you for the kind words! Our baby won’t be exclusively vegan. Eric isn’t a vegan himself (though he eats largely plant-based) so she will have a mix of both our diets.
