What Did U Do?

Recently, my friends at the Farm Sanctuary invited me to participate in their What Did You Do?” campaign which is going on from September 23rd until the World Day for Farmed Animals, on October 2nd. I’ve been such a huge fan of the Farm Sanctuary for years, I didn’t even hesitate to say count me in!

For those of you who aren’t familiar, Farm Sanctuary is the largest farm animal rescue and protection organization in the United States. Guided by their incredibly talented and passionate President, Gene Baur, the team rescues hundreds of farm animals each year. Many of these animals are found on the brink of death due to cruel factory farm conditions. They’ve lived a life of torment and isolation with broken spirits, and they are often depressed and fearful of humans. But the Farm Sanctuary gives these animals a new lease on life. Their various shelters, located in New York and California, encourage visitors and volunteers to meet and connect with the animals, recognizing their inherent intelligence, value, and playful, kind spirits. Many are surprised to learn that farm animals have unique, intelligent personalities much like the pets we love and cherish in our own homes. They also form strong bonds with other animals, and you can see this in action in this short video below:

Without the help of donations and Farm Sanctuary members, many of these animals would not receive the second chance they deserve. That’s where Farm Sanctuary’s “What Did You Do?” campaign comes into play and why we need your help. Here is a short video describing the campaign in more detail. You can also visit their website for more information.

I joined TEAM MOO, which should come as no surprise! As I wrote in last week’s post, I used to have a cow collection as a child so this seems like a natural fit. :) Although I have to say, I’m partial to all the animals and it was really hard to pick a team! Decision making was never my strong point…

Oh hay cutie.

How to participate?

I’m asking you to consider donating to TEAM MOO to help raise funds for this great cause! We would be extremely grateful for any support you can give. You can also join the team, start your own fundraiser, or donate to any one of the other teams (Cluck, Oink, and Gobble). The goal for our team is $25,000 (which will be matched by Angel donors!) and we can only reach it with your help! Click to donate or find out more if you so desire.

But wait, there’s more…

To give you even more incentive to donate, I’m offering a signed copy of my upcoming book, The Oh She Glows Cookbook, to one lucky donor! Simply email [email protected] and let me know that you made a donation (no need to tell me how much!) and you’ll be automatically entered for a signed copy of my cookbook, which is due out March 2014. The winner will be selected at random and the book will be mailed to you as soon as it’s ready with a special note included inside! I’ll announce the winner early in October when the campaign is over.

So what do you think?? Let’s raise some money for the animals!

I love how you are so involved with animal groups. It is such a wonderful thing to see animals go to a happy place after being in such bad conditions.. That cow is such a cutie…

Janae @ Bring-Joy September 24, 2013 at 8:21 am

I’ve often wondered how these animals make it to farm sancturies in the first place. Are they purchased from farmers?

Anyway, I find your activism inspiring.

Anele @ Success Along the Weigh September 24, 2013 at 8:21 am

What a wonderful cause! Never heard of it but am definitely donating! My dad had cows as next door neighbors for a few years and what they lacked in manners (pooing way too close to you and trying to lick you with a big slobbery tongue) they made up for in cuteness and letting me pet them!

Abby @ Change of Pace September 24, 2013 at 8:33 am

I love Farm Sanctuary! For my husband’s birthday last year I ‘adopted’ a goat for him, Miss Hattie!
I think the coolest thing about Farm Sanctuary is that you can do tours and even visit your adopted animal!

Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health September 24, 2013 at 9:20 am

This sounds like a great cause and I’m all for joining in to raise money. I might have to give team Oink some love. That’s so sweet of you to give away a copy of your cookbook too! I can’t wait to see how it turned out.

Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health September 24, 2013 at 9:24 am

I didn’t realize Team Moo was the team you created. I thought you just chose to donate to that team. I take that back, I’ll be donating tot Team Moo! ;)

Tori September 24, 2013 at 10:48 am

Jessica Noelle Glitterpony September 24, 2013 at 12:49 pm

What a wonderful cause and very nice post. Thank you for sharing! I’ll have to check out the links further and donate. :)

Does anyone else think that pig (in the first image) looks like he/she is wearing an earring? I had to look closely to see it was a grass flower or something like that. :) I thought, “A fashion forward pig! Now that’s pretty cool!” Haha, I probably need to get my eyes checked. ;)

Angela (Oh She Glows) September 24, 2013 at 1:54 pm

hah Eric said the same thing! Don’t think it’s just you ;)

Cindy September 24, 2013 at 1:03 pm

I just heard about this place. I have been such a supporter of The Gentle Barn -same concept! It has really changed the way I eat.

Ok, I want to become vegan now after seeing that video. My heart melted for those cuties! Since I can’t have gluten would I get enough nutrients being vegan too?

A worthy cause–it’s so heartening to see the farm animals getting some special attention!

Anything that relieves some of the misery that they are subjected to is worth doing and I hope lots of people will be inspired by your article to contribute!

Without us, they have no voice.

The Vegan Cookie Fairy September 24, 2013 at 2:23 pm

I’m totally donating. Thank you for bringing this organisation to my attention.

Emma September 24, 2013 at 2:36 pm

What a fantastic thing to do Angela! Farm Sanctuary need all of our support. I only wish there were more sanctuaries in the UK.
I’ve always had a soft spot for cows too :)

Elyse @ Lizzie Fit September 25, 2013 at 6:48 am

This is an awesome idea. You have such a big heart. Donation submitted and fingers crossed for a cookbook :D EEK!

Julee Cifani September 25, 2013 at 7:56 am

I love you!

I made a donation and will forward this post to my friends.

I found your blog while doing an elimination diet for an autoimmune disease. I found LOTS of blogs to help a vegetarian, now vegan, still eat well while eliminating so much! But yours is the only one I return to. Your recipes make up much of my diet and the meals my husband and daughter eat as well.

From one animal lover/protector to another, thank you so much for this post and opportunity to help!

Angela (Oh She Glows) September 25, 2013 at 9:24 am

Aw thank you Julee! I appreciate it so much. So glad you are enjoying the blog!

suzanne September 25, 2013 at 8:45 am

what a great cause – I had not heard of them but would love to give.

Also wanted to let you know I made your eggplant parm and eggplant zucchini casserole and eggplant chips in the last couple of weeks – they were great and my husband and son loved them too (my other 2 tried them but would not love eggplant even if I offered to do their homework for them for a year!). I had not had eggplant before but have gotten it with our CSA stuff for the last few weeks- I have another now and need to come up with something to do with it!
I need to find the time to keep up with all I want to make as I have always loved your sight and want to try every reccipe! (made the almond cookies too – topped with a little chocolate and my kids gobbled them – SO glad cause they are not big on nuts so I have to find ways to get them in there!). Thanks Angela for all you do!

Lindsey September 25, 2013 at 6:04 pm

Hi Angela!

I have been following your blog for a while and I just wanted say that I love it! Your photography is lovely, your writing is great and always entertaining, your story is inspirational, and your recipes are delicious! I am a vegan chef and maybe soon to be food blogger (and psychology major :) ) and you definitely inspire me to get creative in the kitchen.

For the love of food,

Angela (Oh She Glows) September 26, 2013 at 8:19 am

Thank you Lindsey! I’m so happy to hear this :)

Melissa September 25, 2013 at 6:25 pm

I love this! One day my boyfriend and I want to turn his farm into a mini sanctuary. Watching this video really drives the dream home! You’ve got me thinking, maybe we can partner with an existing organization, I’m sure some need more space. Thanks for the post!

Tatiana September 27, 2013 at 10:10 am

I am so glad you wrote this, and it gets to those who may not know the truth behind animal products. I hope this opens their eyes!
We love going to Farm Sanctuary!!

Cass October 8, 2013 at 8:58 pm

What wonderful work Farm Sanctuary are doing. Thank you for letting us know what we can do to help. The animals pictured are just beautiful!

lindsey November 2, 2013 at 10:07 pm

I’m about a month late for this post, but I’m glad I found it anyway! Something changed in me overnight and I’ve become obsessed with ridding my husband’s and my diet of meat and animal products! Also, all of these videos made me cry, and it just helps keep me on track even more.

Tora November 11, 2013 at 6:47 pm
