Every morning around 6am my alarm clock goes off. It starts quietly and gets progressively louder and more annoying if I try to fall back to sleep. I’m usually in the middle of some random dream and I think about it for a few minutes as I try to will myself back to sleep.
If my alarm clock fails to rise me, it has no choice but to resort to other methods: walking up the length of my body, kneading my stomach and chest with sharp nails (ow!), purring – inflected as if it’s a question, and shooting laser beams through my eyelids to will them open. No matter what, do not open your eyes. I repeat: Do not make eye contact with the alarm clock!!!
If you do, it’s over.
Meet my alarm clock – highly reliable with a 0.000001% fail rate.

[This is Sketchie’s “I’m HUNGRY and haven’t had breakfast yet AND I happen to hate you right now” face. I snapped this while we were away over the long weekend. Sketchie was particularly unhappy that we slept til about 7:30 that morning!! gasp]
After 5 or 10 minutes of playing dead, I give in and stumble downstairs ever so slowly as Sketchie rubs his head along the staircase railing. He has now morphed back into Happy Cat and he’s prancing along to his feeding spot.
After I feed him, he ditches me and goes back to sleep (how nice), leaving me alone until Eric gets up.
I notice the morning feels a bit chillier than usual and make my first batch of hot oatmeal in a long time. The weather is dreary and creamy peanut butter oats sound like the perfect solution!
To add a fun twist to this bowl, I partially caramelized a ripe banana in the pot before cooking the oats with a tiny bit of non-dairy butter. This was just to intensify the flavours a bit more. Then I swirled in half the peanut butter and cooked the oatmeal as normal for about 8-10 minutes.
The result is a creamy bowl of oats lightly sweetened with banana and highlighted with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. It smells heavenly! On top, I added more peanut butter, a good dose of cinnamon, nuts, and a drizzle of pure maple syrup. It was just about perfect.

Early Morning Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal

1 year ago: Roasted Tomato Basil Pesto
Yield: 1 serving
Ingredients:
- 1 large very ripe banana, peeled and roughly chopped
- 1 tsp non-dairy butter or coconut oil
- 1/2 tbsp natural peanut butter
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2-1 tsp chia seed (or ground flax)
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/8-1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- pinch of salt
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- toppings: heaping 1/2 tbsp peanut butter, nuts, cinnamon, pure maple syrup
1. In a medium-sized pot over medium heat, cook the banana and non-dairy butter or oil for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
2. Stir in 1/2 tbsp peanut butter, and add the oats, chia, milk, spices, and a pinch of salt. Whisk well until combined.
3. Bring to a low boil and then reduce heat to a simmer, stirring often for 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
4. Scoop into a bowl and top with peanut butter, nuts, cinnamon, and maple syrup.

I can’t talk about Sketchie waking me up in the morning without sharing this classic Simon’s Cat video!

AHH I really need to start reading your posts BEFORE I eat breakfast! This looks beautiful! As for Sketchie’s face, that’s how I look if anyone gets in the way of me and my breakfast after morning workouts. ;) Have a great day Ange!
^Agreed. Totally making this at the cottage this weekend, and eating it out on the dock while I watch the sun rise in my slippers. I’m actually hoping for a chilly morning! :)
That sounds heavenly! Can I come? ;)
Haha, will Sketchie let you?
He says he has to come too.
How wonderful! I’m jealous :)
That sounds perfect! ;)
Oh, and banana peanut butter oatmeal is one of my favorite. It’s doesn’t look beautiful – but it tastes great!
Agreed x 2! I’ll settle with making this tmr morning :)
Last night I searched your blog for “banana” recipes, and I woke up to find this one. Second Career: mind-reader?
This makes me wish it was about 60 degrees outside so I could enjoy a bowl in fuzzy socks and a blanket on the porch. Of course it doesn’t have to be cold for me to enjoy oatmeal but this looks like cozy in a bowl.
Cats, much like humans, are much happier when fed. :-)
This looks delicious! I LOVE warm oats in the morning but I just can’t seem to find the time to make them, except for on weekends of course. Have you had any success heating overnight oats in the morning? I would guess, since they don’t need to cook much, I would be able to heat them up in a pot in 2min.
I suggest my make ahead steel cut oats – I think it makes about 4 servings worth and I love it cold too: http://ohsheglows.com/2011/09/20/make-ahead-steel-cut-oatmeal-4-new-oatmeal-recipes/
Also try instant steel cut oats: http://ohsheglows.com/2012/05/18/gooey-banana-bread-batter-instant-steel-cut-oatmeal/
Enjoy!
Hi, I make steel cut oats once or twice a week for my family in my slow cooker! Eat it warm that morning and reheat the left-overs. Spray the inside of your slow cooker and add 8 cups of water and 2 cups of steel cut oats. You can add a pinch of salt or some brown sugar if you want and then cook on low for 7-8 hours. It is wonderful to wake up to a warm yummy breakfast that’s already done! I throw in a handful of craisins and a splash of almond milk before I eat it. (Don’t add raisins or craisins before you cook – comes out weird!) You can also use a rice cooker that has a slow cook setting.
Partially caramelized banana? This has to be the most excited I’ve ever been to try one of your recipes!!
I LOVE caramelized banana. I made socca french toast the other day and did my banana topping like that – it felt like I was eating dessert at 8 am!
My problem is photographing oatmeal. never looks this scrumpcious. these are perfect. well, just means i need to practice more (w/ the chance of eating more oatmeal – woo hoo!).
Pinning the oatmeal recipe, too!
I don’t think Sketchie could be any cuter!! My cat Baxter used to wake me up by pulling my hair with his teeth – he’d bite right at the scalp and pull all the way through to the ends. If that didn’t work he’d body slam himself into things until I finally had enough. Gotta love cat alarm clocks! Oh, and this oatmeal look delicious too! :)
I LOVE YOUR POSTS ABOUT SKETCHIE! That cat is amazing. : )
Also, this looks soooo comforting and delicious! Yum!
Hi Angela,
LOL…….I too have the same alarm clock. I have two Bengal’s myself and without fail they will take turns waking me up starting at 5am. One will nibble at my toes and the other will meow until I give in ;0)
Love this recipe. I never thought of using Coconut oil in Oat meal. I will be trying this out ASAP =0)
I have the exact same alarm clock!
Yum! I will be making this on Saturday morning :)
Eeeeek! This looks incredible for a weekend fall morning!
It looks so good! can it please just be morning so I can try it :)
This looks absolutely, freaking delicious! How many calories in a breakfast like this though? I’m currently having to really pay close attention to details with my eating and working out to make any progress.
Sketchie has so much attitude in that picture! Hilarious. I like how you described him as your alarm. And that video is so cute. My cat died last year but that video just warmed my heart a little! :)
Sooo happy I saw this before breakfast…I made it and it’s fab!!
Oh, I LOVE PB and banana oats! Never thought to carmelize the banana before- genius! My alarm clock’s name is Ruby, and her pre”fur”red alarm “tone” is the fluffy tail into the nostrils. :-)
I miss my alarm clock! I can’t have cats where I live now so my aunt is taking care of her for me. This post is exactly how my mornings used to go. Except I’m lazy and usually microwaved my oatmeal :P
Sketchie looks majestic in that photo. What a cat.
PB + Hot oats = the best combination ever haha
Oh yum! I have been going a little crazy with hot oatmeal over the past couple of weeks — ever since the nights started cooling down. In fact, I recently discovered slow cooker steel cut oats and they are AMAZING!!! I love the PB/banana combo!!
Yummy! Looks delicious! I know what I’m having for breakfast today…
My bengal does the EXACT same thing. At the same time, though this morning she felt 5:45 a good time to start this really quite half meow that she has recently developed. And when I finally got up to feed her (6 am) she does this really loud exasperated meow, that sounds angry that i made her wait.
hah that is EXACTLY like Sketchie! He does this weird purr/meow like a question mark almost like “feed me please?”, then the meows get progressively more loud and fed up like “FEED ME NOW!!!!”.
I really love that picture of Sketchie! It’s perfect, complete with dramatic lighting and statuary in the background. He’s such a beautiful cat! And that oatmeal looks amazing too!
Breakfasts like this are the reason I love this time of the year. Warm delicious breakfast curled up under a blanket with some hot tea. This looks incredible!!!
Oohh, never had oatmeal with peanut butter before.. I’ll have to switch this up with my normal recipe.
By the way, where did you find such an adorable and beautifully colored alarm clock? hehe
HI Angela
Every time I try and access your site from my home computer, it is taken over by an HP computer add for designing a bag in conjunction with Project Runway! I can’t find a way around it. It doesn’t seem to happen on my work computer (you are my home page!) so it probably has to do with my security settings.
Has anyone else complained of this? It is driving me crazy. I just wanted you to know in case they were a sponsor.
Love your site and look forward to each new post!
Have a great day!
Jean
Hey Jean,
Sorry bout this, looks like it was something to do with the Ad itself. I was able to reproduce this and we had a few more complaints. We’ve removed it for the time being and asked the Ad provider to look into it.
Thanks so much for letting us know though!
Eric
Hey Jean, It should be fixed now. So sorry about that! Let me know if you continue to have issues.
I adore this post! My cat Miso is the same… she gets so desperate for us to get out of bed, once we do get up and feed her she’s ready to pass out and cuddle. Oh the life of a cat…
It’s been a long time since I’ve had just a simple bowl of warm cozy oats… most definitely doing that this weekend!
Creamy peanut butter anything always makes dreary weather more tolerable! They look great.
And so does Sketchie. What a great expression!
Ha, I’ve seen that video before – definitely a good one!
Many fruits go well with oatmeal, but my favorite is always banana. :)
This looks amazing! I haven’t have oatmeal in a while but I think you may have inspired me to find some time and make this over the weekend. I LOVE the idea of the caramelized banana! Brilliance.
Our cats are vultures in the morning, too. Even though we get up around 6:00am we have made it a point to not feed them until 9:00am ish and they have actually started to be a little (and I mean a little) less crazy and annoying in the morning. I do have to say, there is something about those furry little heads nudging you and that soft purring sound, that is so comforting and welcoming to wake up too, though.
I should have checked out your page before i dashed out of the house of this morning leaving behind 3 meowing cats. looks unbelievably creamy and thick. my kind of oatmeal.
and the little video is freaking hilarious. (sharing it on my FB now) that’s how we used to wake up with 3 cats in the room, until we gave them their own room. though they still call for food at 6 am. i swear all cats are synched for that time.
I made basically the same breakfast this morning! walnuts instead ;)
Oh my goodness, that looks heavenly! More like a dessert! I’d love to wake up to that!
I literally read this blog post in bed as I was trying to convince myself to throw off the covers and go make a decent breakfast, and the moment I saw this I flew into the kitchen to make it. DELICIOUS! Such a fantastic warm weather alternative to my usual oat-banana-PB morning smoothie.
How in the world do you manage to do photography so early in the morning, especially pre-breakfast and w/out tea or coffee. . . wow.
I love oatmeal & this looks unbelievably great! Prefect for fall!! Yum-o!!
I am allergic to bananas but I can have them cooked or baked. I may have to try this to see if the cook time is enough to release the proteins so I can eat it without allergy incidence. Five minutes of caramelizing plus another 8-10 minutes might do the trick. Any more banana tips you might have would be welcome! Thanks for this recipe. Love your site!
This sounds divine! Will have to make it soon!
Your oatmeal looks perfect! I’ve been eating a lot of cold overnight oats lately, and I think it’s about time to bring back the hot oatmeal! The caramelized banana idea is brilliant! Also, that picture of Sketchie is adorable – the look on his face is priceless!
I just tried this oatmeal, and I love it! The caramelized banana adds just the right amount of sweetness. I can definitely see myself making this over and over again. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Delicious! PB and banana oatmeal is my breakfast almost every morning.
Yummy! Banana peanut butter oatmeal is one of my favorites!
This makes me want to drive to the store for bananas immediately. :) Can’t wait to try it!
I couldn’t stop looking at these photo’s. they look so unbelievably tasty!
Thanks so much for sharing these tips and your recipe x
haha yep, my cat knows food o’clock well. It sucks when we change the clocks and her internal clock stays the same.
Oh wow this looks completely delicious….This is definitely going to be my Saturday breakfast treat!
This sounds absolutely dreamy. I love the banana pb flavor combo.
This looks so delicious! Unfortunately, it’s still way too hot down here in Florida for hot oats, so it looks like I’ll be eating overnight oats for the next month or two.
Also, you’re lucky your alarm clock lets you sleep in until 6 am! Mine wakes me up at 5am if he’s feeling generous. Apparently he needs me to go show him that he does, indeed, have food in his bowl instead of going to check by himself. Silly kitty. I just wish I could stay up and do something productive instead of going back to sleep until 6:30 when my other alarm clocks (my kids) wake me up.
My cat is terrible for this. It’s worse in the summer when it’s light so early. To him daylight = time to get up even if it is 4am! I’ve started feeding him at night so that he isn’t hungry in the morning. Seems to be working so far.
You are a mind reader indeed! I almost never buy bananas, but I treated myself to bananas this week. I want to go to bed now (it’s only 4:35 pm) so that morning comes faster for me to try this recipe!
Peanut butter and banana is my favorite combination for oatmeal. Heck, it’s my favorite combination for just about anything.
All of your posts make me hungry…this one did not fail…maybe breakfast for supper???
My cat also likes to be an alarm clock. The rule in our house now is the last person to go to bed has to feed the cat. That way we might get an extra hour of sleep ;) Hope this helps…
haha love the “i hate you” face. My dog gets up in the morning and rests her chin on the bed. Without even being awake I can feel those eyes staring at me too. Usually it’s not for food tho and just some cuddles. Who can say no to cuddles??? Of course I cave and invite her up on the bed.
I had a craving for oatmeal for the first time in months the other day. The mornings here in Vancouver are getting chillier too. We’ve had some unexpected hot weather during the days lately so I’m saving my oatmeal mornings till later this month. Do you ever feel like oatmeal is too “heavy” in the mornings? I’ve found sometimes it’s gloopy and weighs me down instead of giving me energy. I like the overnight oats with the mashed banana – feels lighter.
-Michelle {LiveLoudly}
This looks so fabulous! Awesome idea!
My cat does the same exact thing, every single morning!!! Definitely don’t need an alarm clock when he’s around :)
This recipe looks amazing! I may have to make it tomorrow morning!
I love love LOVE nut butter in oatmeal. That’s my go-to breakfast in the colder months. I usually do 1 tablespoon of almond butter and a drizzle of agave, but this sounds fantastic. I’ve never thought of caramelizing a banana for oatmeal!
Oh wow, that post made me laugh.
When I first read, this I genuinely thought you were talking about a regular alarm clock, but then I read ‘purring’ and I took a second guess!
Ohh, that porridge/oatmeal sounds divine…mmm
I’ll use almond butter instead and I do want to try and perfect caramelised bananas!
thanks for this recipe, yum
This sounds soooo delicious! Unfortunately, it’s still hot in Italy, so I will still stick to cold oats. Can’t wait till the weather is a bit more chilly, I love autumn.
I need a Sketchie too! Morning is a struggle with a mobile alarm, all those snooze options… *sigh*
Peanut butter and banana makes an amazing sandwich (my favourite in fact!) definitely need to try this though, I think I will for breakfast tomorrow as I have everything I need already :D Love the extra cat details too :)
My cat used to do the exact same thing when she was young (and skinny) except that she’d also attack my feet. Now she’s too chubby and can’t jump unto my bed :( PB and banana oatmeal is the best!!!
At least you’ve got a very adorable alarm clock! I don’t think that pets understand the “its the weekend, let me sleep” thing. My dog faithfully wakes me up at 6:30 every morning for food….then promptly sleeps the day away. And I can’t wait to try the oatmeal! Perfect for fall days!
I have never been so excited to try a new version of pb banana oats. I’m going to make this tomorrow morning with coconut oil and sunflower butter (food allergies). Can’t wait! Thank goodness for the dreary English weather, haha. Thank you Angela!
Breakfast used to be just a bowl of cereal and soy milk for me … until I started reading blogs like yours. I can’t wait to give this recipe a try!
OMG..I just had to make this. Right. Away. Which I did. Since I was getting a bit tired of my same overnight oats routine.
You know it’s amazing as I am singeing my mouth to eat it straight from the boiling pot.
Anyhow, I cannot wait until the morning to eat it all up! (Yes i made it ahead) TGIF indeed.
Thanks again for this recipe :)
I’m not typically the biggest oatmeal fan, but you’ve managed to make this PB banana oatmeal look realllllly enticing! Sketchy is so cute, by the way :)
My cat Edgar does the same thing! He starts to nip at my hand, I try to ignore him, it doesn’t work. Then I get myself out of bed to feed him. 20 minutes later he is passed out snoozing and I am wide awake. :)
Sketchie is the cutest! And I totally get the wake up call. You are a lucky cat-mom if he does this after 6. Lou makes every afford to wake me up round about 3/4 am – than I have to throw her out of the bedroom and close the door, or I won’t sleep for another minute.
btw – this looks like the MOST delicious bowl of oats and is a perfect fit for all those cold mornings ahead of us.
Wow! I just made it this morning, and god was it delicious! I think I could eat this oatmeal all day long… Thank goodness you came up with this recipe Angela, you just made my morning! :)
Oh gosh I love Sketchies expression so much! He looks like a classic grumpy garfield hehe. As for the oats, they look delicious!! I made a simpler version this morning with banana, chia seeds, maple syrup and peanut butter that melted and made it perfect :)
Looks delicious!
Banana and peanuts are such great friends- this looks divine. We’ve still got a smidge of sun left in London, but I fear it’s not for long.
Ha that’s a cat for ya…..they are definitely the best managers. I really like the idea of caramelizing the banana first – and I’ll add oats more as it gets a bit cooler. It’s still in the 90’s down here in Florida!
I love cooking banana in oatmeal!! Your photos look gorgeous!!
This post made me want two things. 1. Caramelized bananas (never tried those before, sounds perfect!) and 2. a cat. I haven’t had a cat in two years since my 18yr old Kringle passed away. I think it might be time for a new family member. I’ve been wanting to wake up earlier in the mornings.
That’s hilarious! Our cat (Sarabi) has been been particularly morning-noisy lately (and late evening too). Funny, her and Sketchie look a lot alike… hmmm, are they up to something. ;)
Food looks dynamite as always… enjoy your day Angela!
Ha! My dog won’t let me sleep in either! She likes breakfast at the same time every day!
Your breakfast looks amazing :) can’t wait to make it!
Thankfully I read this last night, it was cool this morning and I had all ingredients on the house. It was meant to be. and WOW it did not disappoint. The caramelized bananas were amazing! Thank you this will be a regular in my house this fall!
x Steph
That is too funny! Our little girl kitty does that too, but she only wakes up my husband! It never fails, about 6:30am every morning, she is by his side “chirping” like a quail (she does that instead of meows. It’s the cutest thing on the planet). If he doesn’t wake up right away, she will take one tiny needle claw and pop his fingers, if that doesn’t work she will straight up and ever so lightly bit the bridge of his nose. It is hysterical and so friggin’ adorable and absolutely annoying for him! He is always the main target, but she actually did it to me the other day. She also does the same thing as Sketchie…as soon as she has him out of bed and fresh food in her bowl, she goes off to take a nap. Brat :) Oh, and this recipe looks fab! Love the caramalized banana!
Just made this now! Super tasty. I could eat this every morning!
Yummy!! That reminds me, you had said that your sister had made a fabulous PB oatmeal banana smoothie that sounded devine, but you didn’t exactly put in the recipe. Would you mind doing that on the blog at some point, it sounds so good and I trust that you/your sister’s recipe will be delish!
That first picture of the oatmeal is drool-inducing…for realz. Want to try this when the weather gets a little cooler!
Hehe. Kitties are pretty good alarm clocks. I have one of those at my house too. ;)
This is how you start the day out right!
Had this for breakfast – it was like heaven in a bowl on a cool fall morning. Kept me fueled for hours and thru my am workout. I love the blog and have gotten several of my friends hooked – and we’re not even vegan!
I’m going to make this this morning, looks incredible!
I can totally relate to the living alarm clock. Meg does the same thing to me in the morning, she wakes me up obnoxiously early, I feed her then she goes back to sleep. Gee, thanks! Does Sketchie love the sound of his own voice also? Meg just LOVES to talk to her friends that none of us can see, all the time. That “Simon’s Cat” video cracks me up every time!
You make all your photos look sooo delicious! Do you have a special camera?
I just made this for my sick 3 yr old. He devoured it!
Just made this this morning and it was fantastic, perfect autumn/winter breakfast. Loved the partially caramelized bananas! I subbed in hemp milk and almond butter, and it was delicious!
The recipe sounds great. But what caught my eye was Sketchie, he is gorgeous!!! What breed is he?
Dear Angela
I found your website a few weeks ago when I was looking for interesting recipes to spice up my anti candida diet. Vegan minus sugar. I have to say I have totally fallen in love with your blog and your wonderful wonderful recipes are oh so inspiring. I am having so much fun creating with your creations. Food is such a divine source of love laughter and happiness.
Thank you, you have lightened my life.
Lynne.
Hey Lynne, Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so happy to hear you enjoy the blog & recipes so much. Thanks for making MY day!
Holy moly, Lynne! Vegan minus sugar. You’re a trooper and a real healthy diet inspiration. This blog has made our household transition to vegan nearly simple… but I can’t deny that I’m totally hooked on sugar. I stick to whole foods mostly, but I just have a sweet tooth. If you don’t mind me asking, why are you doing anti candida and what other resources do you recommend for learning how to cut down sugar in an already restrictive diet?
Thanks!
This looks so yummy and nutritious! Can’t wait to give it a try for breakfast:) I live te fact that you added chai seeds to it…I’m always adding these seeds to anything I can to make it extra healthy. Thanks for sharing! Xo
This morning was the first morning it was too cold to stand barefoot on the sidewalk as I let the dogs do their business… So I got back inside and made this. GOOD LORD. Definitely the best oats I’ve EVER had. Caramelizing the banana? Genius!
I just made this with Cinnamon Raisin peanut butter and it was absolutely delicious. Ooof I am stuffed.
I just tried this recipe this morning and oh my soooooo gooooooddddd!!!! Just perfect!!
This was absolutely the best oatmeal I have ever eaten! However when I made the recipe the first time, I was viewing it on my iPad and for some reason addd 1/2 cup peanut butter instead of the called for 1/2 tablespoon! Big mistake! I remade it ( correctly) and its delicious! Any idea of the nutrition information for your recipes?
hah well I can imagine how good it would be with 1/2 cup! Some mistakes arent that bad afterall…heh.
I don’t regularly post nutritional info, but I do occasionally. Nutrition data or Calorie Count are two free services if you want to try them out.
This is the best oatmeal I’ve ever made/tasted. Thanks for this delicious and healthy recipe! :)
I am so happy I stumbled upon your take on oatmeal. I just finished my first bowl and I can’t wait to make it again. It is so easy and the spices and vanilla really complete it. I’m excited about hot oatmeal again! Such a perfect fall breakfast. Thank you!
I’ve made this recipe the past 2 weekends and it is amazing! Thanks for sharing!
alongcamesomechatter.blogspot.com
This looks yummy and perfect for colder weather. Sketchie is beautiful. I love cats and there faces and attitudes!
Loved this recipe! I’m not a cooking guru but I need to spice up my morning oatmeal and this was perfect. It wasn’t too sugary or too bland, just delishious and nutrishious. (: thanks for inspiring me!
I’m allergic to peanuts. Has anyone tried this with cashew or almond butter?
I just made this with plantain….unreal!
This was fantastic! Reminds me of peanut butter spread over banana bread. I used vanilla soy milk instead of almond milk because that’s what I had and it was fantastic. I love oatmeal and I’m always looking for a way to dress it up. Thank you for the recipe!
I’ve tried this with fresh ingredients twice now, and sorry to say I just don’t care for it. In looking back over the comments, I’ve come to the conclusion it must be a “girl-food”.
Made some today with apples, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar and dirt. Much better!
; )
I made this this morning – it was wonderful! Thanks!
I’ve noticed on a couple of your posts that you use those cute little personal pans to serve. Are they cast iron? Where might I come across something like them?
They are cast iron :) I got them at Kitchen Stuff Plus I think .
This kinda inspired me to try something new..
Basically the same recipe but replace the warming spices and maple syrup with CHOCOLATE! I don’t know if there is such a thing as vegan hersheys, but i’m not vegan so I used Hersheys, but if you have some – try it.
This sounds good, looking forward to trying it, but how many calories and how many servings?
Thanks!
This is my favorite breakfast of all time!! My only change: honey instead of maple syrup. I could eat this forever.
This is the first recipe I’ve made from your site, and its a home run! I cheated and added chocolate chips as well (sinful) I’m currently transition-ing to vegan, so although all your recipes look delicious, I find myself a bit intimidated (like where does one find chia seeds hahaha)! But this has really helped me build my confidence, thank you so much :)
HELP! I had pinned several of your recipes, but I open your site this morning to make some yummy oatmeal, and NONE of your recipes show anymore!!! All I can see are the comments. Is it just my computer??? This is truly tragic! :( :( :(

I’m sorry Beth, we had technical issues last night! Everything should be resolved now. Let me know if you still have issues
OMG! I just made this and its the best oatmeal ever! Feel like I’m eating dessert for breakfast!
This is going to be my new go to! Thanks so much for sharing!
Do you have the nutritional information available for this recipe? Calories?
OH these pictures make me want to get cooking right now! I cannot wait for breakfast tomorrow :D
This recipe was taunting me for the longest time. It looks really good, but I never had oatmeal before and I don’t enjoy soggy oats in müsli, so I figured it’s just one of those things that look better than they taste. Today I finally made it and it was beyond amazing. Will be making more oatmeal from now on. :)
Yum! Thanks for this recipe – I’m enjoying it right now, very tasty!
I wish I had seen this before breakfast! ;) You are so creative!
oatmeal + soymilk. microwave three minutes. + sliced banana. + spoon of peanut butter. eat.
Awesome recipe! Love the blog! Made this this morning before school – absolutely amazing.
Amazing recipe!! I’ve never liked oatmeal so much as I do now. Also impressed with how healthy and filling it is. This has become a weekly morning tradition in my house, it wins hands down with everyone. Thank you!
I made this today with a frozen banana. The banana got quite soft and mixed in with the oatmeal. It was very tasty and filling, but I’m sure it would be even better with a fresh banana! A treat for breakfast!
Just made this and am eating it with my daughter right now! So good…I can see this as a breakfast staple come the colder months!
I just broke all of the rules and made this while it’s 90 degrees outside. This is hands down, the tastiest oatmeal I have ever had! Thank you so much for sharing this delicious recipe!
This morning I woke up and looked outside and it was raining! I was reminded of the “banana pancake” song from Jack Johnson but instead of banana pancakes, I made peanut butter banana oatmeal with my 5 year old sister… We had so much fun cooking and listening to Jack Johnson songs! My other sister is allergic to almonds, so we replaced the almond milk with cashew milk and because my mom hates using peanuts because it’s so unhealthy, I used cashew butter! It was a dream! Thank you so much!
Beautiful!! The oatmeal, which I will be making in a minute, and the kitty!!
Could you leave this in the fridge and leave it as “overnight” oats? :)
It’d be great to make it the night ahead and to eat it on the go!
I can’t see why that wouldn’t work! Let me know if you try it out :)
I just made your pb banana oatmeal and it is absolutely delicious! I have to admit that I used cow’s milk instead of almond milk, but it turned out perfectly. Thanks!
One of the best bowl of oatmeal I’ve ever had! Great idea of caramelizing the banana. :)
this is so delicious! Thank you so much for the recipe (and the story to it).
The smells during making this dish are so nice for starting your day right – I put on some nice music and the waterkettle for some coffee – it felt like life could not be any better. I followed your suggestions for topping the oatmeal with peanut butter, some peanuts and cinnamon and as a little berry-extra, I tossed in a couple of dried cranberries and goji berries. They gave a nice sour touch to the sweetness of the banana.
Thanks again for the recipe and congrats to your wonderful website – it’s always a pleasure to read!
Just wanted to give you a gold star! I just made a variation of this with apple and sunflower seed butter instead of the PB/banana and it was also amazing. Topped with apple pie chia seed jam! Feels amazing after a run. :) Thanks!
Just made this & it is wonderful! A healthy & super easy supper. Will make again & again.Good way to use overripe banana.
I just made this this morning and let me say HEAVEN in a bowl! Perfect fuel for a chilly morning and with a golden retriever at my feet it’s perfection!
I didn’t have peanut butter or peanuts so I tried it with almond butter and walnuts. Oh my goodness!!! What a breakfast treat… amazing.
YUM! It’s like eating a bowl of peanut butter cookie batter!! I put in 1tbsp of PB, because PB is the best food on earth. This is delicious! Thank you.
I had this for breakfast this morning and it was so good, it was easy to forget it’s actually home made. The perfect amount of banana, peanut butter and cinnamon. thanks!
This was super yummy! Enjoyed it this morning! Just found your blog and this was the first recipe I have tried. Can’t wait to try others!
I made this for breakfast today and personally, I think that the peanut butter taste should be stronger. It was a very interesting and creative idea and I really enjoyed making it!
So simple but so good!
Thank you for teaching me how to elevate plain old oatmeal to next level goodness with still all healthy ingredients! I love your blog & recipes so much!
xo
I just made it this morning on a whim. Delicious!!!! So creamy and hearty. I used coconut milk instead of almond. PB and pecan bits on top, yummmmmm!
This recipe looks divine! However, I am trying to lose some pounds and am wondering how to lighten this up. Any suggestions? To eat the entire serving would be 548 calories, 15.1 g fat, 80.4 carbs and 29.2 sugars! WOW! (This is with Sunflower butter.)
Ditch the butters and maple syrup and only use coconut oil, which provides actual health benefits like boosting your metabolism while also offering a sweet element.
Thanks for this delicious recipe! I just made it for myself and boyfriend. Wish I’d made more. We both devoured it. I used coconut oil. Didn’t have nutmeg and it still worked! Will be making this again.
The recipe is COMPLETELY up my alley and I have all the ingredients! JOY! Also random question, where is that gorgeous white sauce pan from with the wooden handle? IT IS DIVINE! Thank you for sharing this deliciousness with us!
I have to tell you that this is my favorite meal to make for just me! I have had it almost 100 times since my son was born back in January. It had helped with postpartum depression as well as give me the energy I need to keep up with my now four month old! Thank you for sharing this! You have changed my life with this heavenly recipe!
Thank you for what has become my favorite oatmeal recipe! I cut down the cinnamon to 1/2 tsp and top with honey-so yummy!
Just made this amazing oatmeal foe breakfast. WOW. Totally love it. Thanks Angela for sharing all your yummy recipes.
This sounds absolutely delicious! Definitely something I’m going to make when the weather cools.
I never get tired of this recipe! I think it might be my all-time favorite way to eat oatmeal. And I LOVE oatmeal.
I just discovered this recipe – what took me so long?? The caramelized bananas are pure genius. SOOO delicious. Thanks for another amazing recipe.
Coming back home with my son from dropping my husband off at school I really wanted to eat something healthy since we had been eating pizza and beer and soda and energy drinks all week. Hard to believe we were ever vegan at one point lol I do miss our vegan days and how light and energized I felt when I eat food like that. I made your oatmeal recipe this morning and it was delicious!!!!. The epitome of cold weather winter and fall this will definitely be my go to breakfast in the mornings when I really don’t have time to get anything healthy. Now if only I could get my husband to eat like this lol. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe I think I am finally back on the road to maybe becoming vegan again or just eating more healthily.
I made this today and it was amazing!!! I don’t usually like oatmeal but the combination of all ingredients was perfect..
I’ve been having this for breakfast every morning for the last couple of days, it is super delicious and filling, especially in these frigid winter mornings!
This is THE BEST oatmeal I have ever made. I have made many bowls of unsatisfactory oatmeal. Thank you, thank you, Angela!
Super yum! This is a breakfast for cold, rainy mornings or when you want to climb a mountain :)
I don’t like oatmeal AT ALL. I don’t know if it’s the taste or texture, but I can’t stand it. However, I’ll make it on occasion just in case my palate has changed. And while I don’t think I’m an oatmeal fanatic just yet, this was the best oatmeal I’ve ever had! I can’t believe I liked it as much as I did or liked it at all for that matter. Wonderful recipe!
How many calories dose this have in it?
Angela, just wanted to let you know that this is my all-time favorite oatmeal recipe! I’ve been making it regularly since it was published- always my cold morning go-to. Exploring & trying out your recipes every week is one of my favorite things to do; you never disappoint! :)
This looks amazing! Is there a way to convert this to a crock pot recipe with steel cut oats instead? I usually use the double broiler technique for easy storage of leftovers and easy clean up.
just tried the recipe and it was fantastic!!
Words can’t express how much I enjoyed this oatmeal. I just started eating hot oatmeal about two years ago and have to say that I have become addicted to giving it for breakfast and sometimes lunch. This will be in my rotation for weekends!
Made this for my kids this morning. They loved it! My daughter was taking in large spoonfuls and she doesn’t do large spoonfuls of anything!
Made this recipe today and loved it. I’ve got your cookbook and make tons of your recipes, all are fantastic. I’ve run a couple of cooking classes, Healthy Cooking Tips at a seniors community in Florida and used your recipes. Participants loved your smoothies and Crispy Almond Butter Choc Chip Cookies. I also love your lentil mushroom balls with cranberry pear sauce. Too many recipes that I love to mention. I love all your creative recipes and have told my class students that your cookbook is my all time favorite. Some of my students bought it and love it also.
Lastly I notice your recipes print using RECIPAGE.com. Not easy to figure out how to print using it….as the word print is small and harder to spot on the page. Also, I always want to see the web address of where I found the recipe to refer others to it also. Now it shows the recipage.com web address in the upper right hand corner instead of OhSheGlows and your web address. This really isn’t a good thing!!! Why change something that isn’t broken! It was working way better before! You can see I’m not much of a techie nor a blogger so I do what is easiest for me.
I always come back to this recipe! it’s such a nice, warm breakfast. Love all your stuff! You are an inspiration. Much love x
This oatmeal is definitely a great way to kick off the day. :) Thanks for the lovely comment, Ema!
I know this post is old now, but I just wanted to come on and say OH MY GOSH! I have peanut butter and banana oats for breakfast every morning and I’ve never managed to make it very tasty. Tried this recipe this morning and it’s out of this world delicious. This will be my new staple now! Thankyou, you’re a very talented cook :)
I’m so glad you discovered a recipe you like, Hannah! :)
Woke up at the cottage to a cool crisp fall feeling morning. Made this for breakfast and it was amazing. Perfect day for it
I love that feeling of early fall in the air!
This is very yummy! Thank you.
So I am the cook in our home, as many wives are, by hubby ia the baker and anything that ia sweet, which for him includes breakfast as he isnt satisified with the good ol’ bowl of cereal everyday. Ever since he found this recipe, I wake up to it once every weekend. It’s “eyes rolling into my head” good. We also sprinkle some hemp seeds on top for added goodness.
I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying the recipe, Gloria! So sweet he makes it for you to wake up to every weekend. :)
Your alarm clock is adorable, even with grouchy face?
I haven’t tried any recipes yet, but I will be. Just found your web page.
Welcome, Donna! I hope you love whatever you try first. :)
if you put this in the fridge would it be good for next morning?
Hey!
Just cooked up your oats and they are by far the most delicious warm oats I’ve had! (and I’ve had a lot!).
Thank you so much for the recipe!
Can you tell me what natural peanut butter you use?
I am currently eating this. SO GOOD!!
The peanut butter oatmeal certainly seems like the perfect breakfast for a kick ass workout a few hours later.. Thanks, i was bored of regular oatmeal and this is a much needed change. I know what i’m having for breakfast tomorrow :)
As a vegan, I always try to find new ways to eat breakfast without having to cut veggies, but still one that is healthy and satisfying.
I tries many oatmeals before and this one is THE BEST OATMEAL I’ve eaten.
I added pure maple for sweetness and chopped pecans for crunchiness.
Yummy !!!
I made this this morning and it was so good! I am trying to lose some extra pounds, but more so focusing on eating healthy and moving my body more. I want to FEEL better. Anyway, this was easy and fun to make and sooo filling. Very happy that I found this website, and thank you for the wonderful recipe! Can’t wait to try the carrot cake oatmeal next week :o)
Hey Deb, I’m so happy you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for letting me know. Enjoy the carrot cake oatmeal too…it’s probably my all time FAVE hot oatmeal!
OH GOSH, I LOVE YOU POST, YOUR CAT AND SIMON´S ANIMATION :)
GREETINGS FROM SPAIN
This sounded good, but I need to stop using recipes on the pages of google made by some blogger and stick to Jacques Pepin recipes. This was way too sweet/overpowering banana flavor and has nothing healthy about it, and just wasn’t good, I couldn’t even finish it, and I hate wasting food. I didn’t even add any of the “toppings” because I had a feeling it would be way too much. Sorry to be harsh.
Honestly my protein shake(Which I don’t really eat for enjoyment) of 1 cup of water, a frozen banana, about 25-30 grams of plain whey protein, 1-2 tbsp of peanut butter, and 0.5 to 1 tbsp of cocoa powder in the blender for 30 seconds tastes better, is healthier, and is easier/faster to make, with less cleanup.
