On Friday, I posted this little teaser on my OSG Facebook wall…

I wrote, “Starting the long weekend off right!”
Chocolate Chip Cookies & almond milk > Beer

Then you begged and pleaded for the recipe and I left you in agony for 6 days while I was busy dipping these cookies in almond milk and slathering crusty, day-old bread with roasted tomato pesto.
I don’t consider myself to be a mean person, but after reading that I guess I am pretty twisted and cruel!
May I repay you in cookies, perhaps?

Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies
I’ve made a few vegan chocolate chip cookies on the blog and these are my favourite and easiest cookies to date. Best of all, the dough is thrown together in less than 5 minutes.
Adapted from my previous versions here and here.
Yield: 12-14 large cookies
Ingredients:
- 7 tbsp vegan butter + 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (or 1/2 cup vegan butter)
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup cane sugar (or use white)
- 1 flax egg: (1 tbsp ground flaxed mixed with 3 tbsp water)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
1. Preheat oven to 350 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, mix together the flax egg and set aside.
2. With an electric mixer or in a stand mixer, beat the Earth Balance until fluffy. Add the brown sugar and cane sugar and beat for 1-2 minutes until creamy. Beat in the flax egg.
3. Beat in the remaining ingredients and fold in the chocolate chips.
4. Shape balls of dough and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes (or up to 14 mins on a Silpat mat). Allow to cool for 5 mins. on the baking sheet and then transfer to a cooling rack for another 10 minutes.
Note 1) For a crispier cookie edge, use 7 tbsp Earth Balance and 1 tbsp olive oil. I preferred cooking them this way. They also spread out a bit more. Alternatively, for a softer cookie, use 1/2 cup Earth Balance and no oil.
Note 2) As suggested by Ashley, to retain the crispy factor of the cookies place them in the freezer after cooling in a container or baggie. It was the only method I tried that kept the crispiness of the cookies! Simply thaw on the countertop.

The dough tasted so amazing I almost considered not baking the cookies!

These are definitely the best vegan chocolate chip cookies I’ve made on the blog. They are chewy with a lightly crisped outer crust and they are quick to throw together.

As I typed this post Eric leaned over my shoulder and said, “First, you torture your friends on Facebook and now you torture me because we have none left!”

And then he looked at this picture below and said, “Whoa, creeper hand.”

You see what I have to deal with? ;)

Have a great Wednesday Thursday!

These are perfect! I’m studying abroad at the moment, so its nice to see a recipe without fussy ingredients/equipment that most baking recipes require! This will be my weekend treat :D
I almost too scared to show the pics of these to my husband, he’ll demand I make them every day….
I can vouch for this. My husband now asks for them every Christmas, Valentine’s Day and his Birthday!
There really is NOTHING better than a classic chocolate chip cookie and a big glass of (almond) milk!
Nothing better than a warm chocolate chip cookie dipped in almond milk- these look fantastic!! xo
These look so perfect there’s nothing better than warm cookies and almond milk
These look nice and crunchy! Great photos too!
YUM!!!!!!!!! I must try!
I’m making these this weekend. OMG they look delicious!!!!
Chocolate chip cookies are my FAV!! The cookies and the dough look PERFECT!
I recently bought molasses and was wondering if there are certain types of recipes…certain flavors you like to use it more with than others…thanks!
Have a great day!!
Here are several of my recipes using molasses: http://ohsheglows.com/recipage/?search_term=molasses
Enjoy!!
PS- the maple baked beans are wonderful!
Yum! I’m so happy you decided not to torture us any longer! I know what I’m making this weekend!
I can’t wait to try yours :) May I offer another vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe? These are by far the best I’ve ever had! Here’s the link to the recipe: http://www.orthodoxmom.com/2008/02/lenten-chocolate-chip-cookie-recipe.html
This is a rainy day recipe if I ever saw one :)
It’s been SO long since I’ve enjoyed a good chocolate chip cookie. I was watching the Food network over the weekend while I put together something I’d bought from IKEA (aka was watching it for like 6 hours) and a show about chocolate chip cookies came on. That plus your post has made me crave them all week! Looks like a simple enough recipe, too.
These look so good! I’m really in the mood for cookies now :)
I would have just eaten the batter!
Oh I did…mmm!
Is there anything more glorious than a chocolate chip cookie? I think not!
There’s nothing better than a classic chocolate chip cookie. I love that brown sugar flavor and often even brown the butter before using it in cookies. Gives is an even more decadent taste! :)
Yippe! This recipe seriously rocks! Its simple and definetly looks amazing!! I love the addition of molasses, how clever :)
Oooh I HAVE to make these, they look SO good. My boyfriend would just love them too! Thanks for an amazing looking recipe!
These sound perfect with the fall weather here. Especially eating one right from the oven (without burning yourself). I think my husband might appreciate these too. I think I’ve kinda got him addicted to desserts and treats…darn, right?
Hahaha oh Eric. Just tell him to be careful with his comments.. or else you might have to whip up another batch of those April Fools cookies again! ;)
yea exactly!
Those look amazing! Can’t wait to try them!
Those look delicious!! If I wasn’t cutting back on sugar at the moment I would definitely be making them this weekend. Instead I am printing off the recipe for a special occasion :)
These look perfect for those upcoming fall days!
Eric is too funny. :-)
That was definitely a total tease! They look amazing!
I know what I’m doing this morning on my day off with my two-year-old! I like that I don’t have to worry if he eats the batter, and I get to use up the bag of chocolate chips I’ve been snacking on the past few days :)
These look delicious. The last time I made vegan cookies I ended up freezing half of the dough in balls to enjoy raw because the dough was irresistible.
Thank you for posting this recipe! We need a good vegan choc chip recipe.
Nothing better then a fresh warm chocolate chip cookie and almond milk!
These look 1,000 times better than any vegan chocolate chip cookie I’ve attempted to create. I’m throwing it in the bag and just making these! :)
Oh my goodness – these look amazing! Can’t wait to make them this weekend – my boys are chocolate chip cookie lovers :)
I am constantly on the hunt for perfect vegan chocolate chip cookies and these look like they’re it! I’m a fan of the big flat cookies.
This is what I’ll be doing over the weekend!!
Wow, these look fantastic! I just had to say though – I’ve visited your blog quite a few times, but I didn’t know until today that you’re a UoG grad! (Link on the site today: http://atguelph.uoguelph.ca/2011/09/guelph-grads-on-the-go-%E2%80%93-glowing-with-healthy-foods/ )
I’m a UoG grad too (and a current PhD student there)! It’s so easy to assume that most food (esp. vegan/veg/specialty) bloggers are American, so it’s neat to find out that you’re so close by.
Cheers!
After a horrible first day back at university… this was just the post I needed. (Sliiightly healthier) COMFORT FOOD! I’ll echo those who say there’s nothing that beats warm chocolate chip cookies and almond milk for a snack. (Except maybe perhaps chocolate chip cookie dough? I’ll have to try to resist eating the dough, too.)
Thank you thank you thank you! This will be a great treat. None of your cookie recipes have failed me yet!
How do you always know how to post exactly what I am working on/craving. This past weekend I have been working on the perfect vegan chocolate chip cookie.. I went from cakey and muffin like to gooey mess (albeit very yummy). Cant wait to give these a shot! Thanks!!!!
I feel your pain…the last time I made vegan choco chip cookies I made about 6 trials or something crazy!
thank you so much! I was just looking for a delicious vegan cookie recipe, this is perfect!
Now I want cookies for breakfast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D
Angela, when are you coming out with a cookbook!? Not only are your pictures gorgeous but your recipes are outstanding and have always turned out perfect for me! Chocolate chip cookie recipes are something that takes me FOREVER to decide on. I know your recipe will turn out great… it’s refreshing to have recipes like yours I know I can rely on.. especially now that all the holidays are just gonna start rolling in haha.. baking season here we come! :-D
Yeah, you weren’t kidding about that! Definitely a great start to a weekend…it may have to be the start of this weekend for me! ;-)
So simple, and the look delicious! Pretty sure I can throw these together now, I have all the ingredients on hand!
Oh Angela, you are the BEST! I’m scared to make these for 2 reasons.
1. I might eat them ALL
2. My family eat all of them leaving none for me! lol :)
These look incredible Angela!!! I so want a cookie right now :)
I also wanted to tell you that a close friend of mine is slowly switching over to becoming a Vegan and I pointed her to your site for great recipe ideas — she is loving it so far!
Thank you Holly! I hope she likes the recipes :)
It’s rainy and gross and I have a huge to-do list.
I shall be making these! :)
hehe ;)
These look absolutely amazing!!
I am REALLY excited to try these. I think you have the best cookie recipes around! Your snickerdoodles..omg. My dad has challenged me to make a better chocolate chip cookie recipe than my sister (who is considered the baker in the family) so I’m thinking/hoping these will take the prize!
Oh, yum! These look like amazing cookies. Chocolate chip is my very favorite flavor, so I’m bookmarking these!! I hope I have an excuse to bake soon. ;)
Good to know about the molasses tip! I love chewy cookies.
The only thing preventing me from biting into my laptop is, that I made some cookies today as well. Puh, good timing!
I never baked something vegan, but I’ll give these a try!
Yummy! Want to make these right now and it’s only 9 am…
Thanks for the recipe!
Between this and Emily’s recipe the other day, I really want some chocolate chip cookies now! I made choc. chip dough balls before I left for a work trip this week, I’m kinda hoping there’s a least one left when I get home tonight now! (highly doubt it)
One thing I haven’t attemped to make GF yet are cookies. Last night all I wanted was a choco chip cookie and now I think I might cry. ;) These look amazing!
2 words: yes please :)
Ok…I use a similar recipe but my cookies never turn out that crispy looking. What is your secret?? Those are the most beautiful cookies EVER!!!
they weren’t that crispy, just a tiny bit. But after I put them in a container they got soft! Any idea on how this can be prevented?
Those cookies are picture perfect! you’ve inspired me to run to whole foods and get some chocolate chips!!
Those cookies look absolutely delicious! I’d make them, but then I’d end up eating all of them since I have no one to give them to! dangerous…
I love baking a batch of cookies on a cold dreary day —- walking into a house smelling like fresh baking is a total “mood booster”… and so is having chocolate chip cookie dough to eat :-D I haven’t had a lot of success with vegan cookie recipes, so I’m looking forward to giving these a try!
I’m DYING over these pictures!!
These look incredible Angela! Recently I’ve had quite a few banking flops due to my over eagerness to make things healthier. These are my next baking project, for sure! They look perfect and I’m making no changes. Thanks so much for sharing. PS I don’t think you’re cruel for sitting back and eating these cookies or yummy homemade pesto. You’re just human :)
These look amazing. Must make these for the weekend! We have this huge event here in Reno– the Great Reno Balloon Races– so we’re getting up bright and early at 4:30 Saturday morning for them! Maybe I’ll bring these along, with some steaming mugs of coffee!
I am just going to make these and eat the dough. Yep.
I know one thing…I’ll be starting off this coming weekend the right way like you did!!… Actually maybe I’ll just pretend and “start” the weekend on Saturday and Sunday too? :D
As soon as mine are all gone (which will be today…) I am going to make these. YUM! They look crunchy!
heh great minds think alike. You’d think I was pregnant or something! lol ;)
Isn’t this all we need in life! So simple but yet does so much for the soul!
I love ingredients and hope to make them, I have far too many cookie recipes myself, they are my abolute favorite thing. :)
Yum!! Question for you: I’m not a huge fan of the flavor of molasses, does including it give the cookies a strong flavor or is it pretty mellow? I would like to keep the chewiness. Thank you!
nope you can’t taste it…it’s an optional ingredient too! Not sure how much it really changes the outcome. I’ll have to try it without next time.
Yeah, I was wondering how that teeny-tiny amount of molasses can make that much of a difference in the cookie’s texture…?
Mmm I love some chewy cookies these look great!
these look great. wanted to note that i made your “perfect veggie burgers” over labor day weekend and they were perfect in deed. a HUGE hit – for me, the vegan of the family, and for everyone else! the recipe was perfect – we did ours on the grill. thanks for the great recipe!
YUM!! these cookies really do look sooo good!
In regards to storage… i know for soft cookies, it helps if you put a piece of apple in the container with the cookies, to keep them soft. For crisp cookies, it’s important to have a loose fitting lid so moisture isn’t trapped.. but I’m sure you knew that :)
Oh wow no I didnt know that! Thanks for the great tips :)
For soft cookies you can also put a piece of bread in your storage container – it absorbs the air
Cookie Monster had the right idea. I haven’t made cookies in ages. Must make cookies this weekend.
These cookies look amazing, I must try them!
http://atguelph.uoguelph.ca/2011/09/guelph-grads-on-the-go-–-glowing-with-healthy-foods/
Check it out!!!
What a tease! Those look so good. Do they really flatten out that much when baking?
Yup!
They look delicious! I love the molasses trick. I can never seem to make an awesome chewy cookie, I hate crisp/crunchy cookies.
These look amazing – and I am so excited to try the pesto this weekend! I have recently been using coconut oil in many of my old cookie recipes – WOW – SOOOOOOO good! Am interested to look into the soy free earth balance too – haven’t seen that.
Thanks for another great post!
I’m happy to see that I’m not the only one mixing up my days of the week! I love knowing that tomorrow is Friday….. I just seem to keep forgetting hahah :)
These cookies look awesome.
What is that orange mat you bake them on?
It’s a Silpat mat. I actually preferred them on just parchment paper though as they get a bit crispier spread out more.
Yumm these look outstanding! As for how to keep the crispy part of the cookie, I think the only way you can really do that is by freezing them immediately after they’ve cooled. Then when you thaw them, eat them shortly after thawing. Moisture in food likes to equilibrate so the harder parts become softer, and the softer parts become harder resulting in a product that has even moisture distribution (given enough time).
Oh wow another great tip! Thank you :)
Just wanted to let you know I tried the freezer method and it WORKED!!!! Hands down the best method I tried. This is life changing, thank you. ;)
Yaey I’m so happy it worked for you! :)
:) I’m updating the directions with your suggestion!
I am so with you on the choco-chip>beer bandwagon!
I CANNOT wait to make these. my daughter cannot have any dairy so I wanted to give her a treat and these look DELICIOUS!!!!
whoaa-a-aaa-a that’s crazy good loooking cookies right there~and who knew 1/4 tsp molasses (only) could make such a big difference?! I love learning little tidbits like that!
I was so excited to see you on the UoG website & had no idea you were an alumni! Go Gryphons! :)
Glad you saw that!! It was weird seeing myself on there!
I was so excited too! :D
Um – YUM! Cookies are my one sweet weakness. My college roommates called me the Cookie Monster because I would never eat anything sweet (I can’t handle sugar really) and then a cookie would show up and I would grab it before anyone could see.
I still can’t handle sugar but these are very low in sugar already and I can probably just use stevia or another replacement instead of the brown sugar. Thanks for the recipe!
It’s now on my Pinterest board of recipes to make… ;)
Thanks for the pin :)
I haven’t had any appetite in weeks (blaming it on relationship stress) and living off of green monsters because I have to eat something. I think these cookies might have fixed that. Not healthy, but whatever gets me eating again right?!
Hope you feel better soon Jenn!
Those look AMAZING!!! I definitely could use a cookie right now!
yumm! These look awesome Angela! Thanks!
Chocolate chip cookies are definitely the tried-and-true classic, favorite dessert. I don’t think I’ve met a single person that says they dont like them! I’m always looking for new really awesome vegan versions, this will be added to the list of recipes to try :-)
These sound delicious! And look super easy to make, which is awesome, because when the urge for cookies strikes it’s like I need cookies RIGHT. THAT. SECOND!
Creeper hand! :D
I so have to make these!
Beautiful recipe, beautiful photography.
I love how you got the milk to balance on the wire rack. I would have been scared it would tip over and spill all over my precious & perfect stack of cookies!
And also the hand/dunking shot. Brave. :)
Chewy. My ears perked up. Vegan cookies tend to be cakey & not chewy, and I adore molasses. I’m totally sold!
Yo have me drooling yet again!
*drool*
holy yum :D
These would have never made it into the oven with me!
Mmm you can never go wrong with a classic like chocolate chip cookies!
oh hhow very tasty indeed!!! hehe and Mr BBB is often my ‘creeper hand’ in photos!!
wow these look fantastic. AND i am happy to report i have ALL of the ingredients in my house right now. this may just be dessert :)
All I want in my life is a chocolate chip cookie right now. I’m out of chocolate chips :(
I am craving cookies now!
Bwahaha, ‘Creeper hand o.o’
These look sooo delicious! I have not baked in a long time. I NEED to bake ^^…-runs off to her kitchen-
http://cupcakes-music-fashion.blogspot.com
I suddenly have the urge to make these cookies RIGHT NOW! Alas, it will have to wait until tomorrow :)
Oh yes. Every kitchen needs the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe!
Love this photo backdrop!
Thanks it’s a Costco placemat…bahah
Looks AMAZING!!! Bahaha, now I want to eat an entire bowl of just the dough for breakfast! My favorite part of vegan baking: eating the dough/batter. :D
These need to be on TV or something! They look SO perfect!!! Whens the cookbook coming out ??? ;)
Only you would take one of the most popular type of cookies and make it better! The molasses addition sounds so good. I recently made your gingerbread oatmeal and it reminded me what a wonderful sweetner it is.
These look absolutely SINFUL!!! Can’t wait to try! :D
hi this is quite important, do you just leave the dough as a ball shape and bake them? or you push them until they are flat? thank you!
Nope I dont push them flat, good question!
These sound heavenly!
nom!
Do you think I could try making these gluten free with all purp GF flour?
Hmm Im really not sure, I havent had much success with all purpose GF flour. Let me know if you try it!
I made these last night and they were absolutely delicious! I only used 1/4 cup brown sugar.
Glad you enjoyed them!
What a coincidence, I just made Dreena’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookies a couple of days ago, and having just opened my jar of blackstrap molasses after making your (delicious, of course!) Iron Woman smoothie, it was cool to see it in a recipe: what a beautiful flavour it imparts! I think they’re the best cookies I’ve ever had, I just can’t believe what a beautiful chewy texture and caramelized flavour they have! Of course, I haven’t made these yet, so it’s likely I haven’t tasted the best cookie ever yet… ;)
love the pictures Angela. I think the wood wall in the back really gives the cookies a “homey” quality.. as if chocolate chip cookies & milk didn’t already scream HOME haha
I just made these cookies with the exact ingredients and tripled the recipe for my sister’s birthday party—I took a risk and….
I am SO GLAD I did! Everybody was so amazed at the chewy, gooey texture and crunchy outside. These are the best cookies I have ever made! When I told everyone that they were vegan, they couldn’t believe it!
THANK YOU ANGELA! I read your posts every morning to help me start my day. Don’t stop doing what you were made to do. :)
Peace and love,
Hilary
New to the blog & loving it! Baking has been one of my biggest challenges since transitioning into a vegan lifestyle a few months ago. I can’t wait to try these!
we don’t get earth balance in australia, any other alternatives?
I’m not sure, I would check a health food store for options :)
yum! Fantastic! I just made them a little while ago, and I did the 7T +1T of canola oil….they are crispy. thanks for the recipe!
Glad it worked for you!
These are delicious. Not too sweet and I appreciate the hint of cinnamon and whole wheat flour flavor. My three year old gobbled his up in just a few bites.
I just made these tonight and they are by far the best Vegan Chocolate Chip cookie recipe I’ve ever had (my husband even liked them too)! I am pretty sure I found my go-to recipe! :)
I’ve only gotten as far as the dough so far, and I just might eat it all before the cookies bake! LOL.
I took these on a girls weekend this past weekend and they were a HUGE hit! they will be my go-to forever and i thank you for the recipe! you are my go-to vegan blog!!
I am speechless! I have never been able to make a cookie from scratch that is not either a) burnt or b) raw. But these turned out perfectly. I am going to make some vegan vanilla bean buttercream and make a cookie sandwich with the buttercream in between…these are amazing!
Baking these right now! The dough tastes delish :D
Made this last weekend and they were delicious! They taste so amazing, you would’t guess they are vegan.
Thanks Amanda!
Hi,
In your post you say to use white sugar.
Many times sugar products are NOT vegan.
http://www.veganproducts.org/sugar.html
The problem with white sugar is they sometimes use BONE CHAR from COWS (gross!) in the refining process. (on top of it probably being GMO, full of pesticides, herbicides, and a highly addictive cocaine like substance ::insert strange trying to laugh at something that is not really funny giggle here::
I have been researching lately about sugars and maple syrups. Unfortunately both are scarier than previously thought. Be informed about the brands you choose for both sweeteners. At least with sugar you can say it is vegan if it isn’t white.
My husband forbid me from researching about diet related stuff awhile back. I think I am remembering why… sigh.
Hey Rachel, I’m aware of this and and only use organic cane sugar.
This might be a dumb question, but are dark chocolate chips vegan?
These are now bookmarked under my recipes tab with the label “BEST chocolate chip cookie recipe.” They were that awesome.
As always, so much gratitude for your brilliance!! :)
Can’t wait to try this out. Thanks for your great vegan recipes!
these are amazing… seriously. i also appreciate that it doesn’t make a million of them !! Just enough :)
i’ve been a lurker for a while — recently decided to put it all out there and these cookies are my first post !! pop in if you get a chance!!!
http://anoriginaltaste.blogspot.com/2011/09/recipe-best-vegan-chocolate-chip.html
Bookmarking!! I’m doing another “vegan challenge” soon, so these will be perfect. I like to share that not all vegan food is “weird.”
My mom made these cookies for our girls weekend on the coast and the cookies were so great! She didn’t have vanilla, so she used orange extract…and they were really quite good!
I made these today and substituted applesauce for the earth balance because I can’t seem to find it at my local grocery stores. SO yummy!!! Thanks for sharing:)
Ok I JUST put these in the oven, but it’s hard to even get that far when the batter tastes so good. My only complaint is that this recipe should make a million cookies…no exaggeration. I’m at least doubling this recipe next time I make it – my husband eats too fast for me to get to save any of these!!! :D
Dreena Burton’s chocolate chip cookies are my favorite. I make them all the time and the blackstrap molasses really add a nice buttery taste! Also gives it a kick of iron which, I love. These are some delicious looking cookies by the way :)
These are really THE BEST cookies. I’m making them for my scared-of-veganism coworkers and not telling them anything, and I bet they will eat them alllll and yearn for more and I will tell them to become vegan, because that’s where the best cookies are :D Thank you so much Angela! :D
:) GLad you enjoy the cookies Emily!
I have a problem…I could bake these EVERYday. Seriously. I actually technically DO bake them everyday (if you count yesterday and today ;)). A funny thing is in my nutrition class at U of G, we were talking about foods to avoid while pregnant, and raw cookie dough was on there. I wanted to shout out, “not vegan cookie dough!” But refrained. Love them so, so much!
how crucial is the wheat pastry flour? Could I use regular flour? Not even sure where to find that…
Yes I think all purpose flour should work
I’m making my third batch of cookies since Sunday, this time a double batch to bring to some friends (and some to save for me!) These are the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had, and I’m so happy they’re vegan.
I did notice the were a little on the oily side for me the first time I made them, so I replaced two tablespoons of the EB with applesauce, and they were divine! The applesauce also acts as a binder, so the cookies aren’t as flat, but still spread out.
Oh that’s good to know, I will have to try them that way!
I can’t stop making these!!! I follow the recipe exactly, but for some reason mine don’t get thin. I thought maybe my baking soda was bad, but I used a new box and they still stay very compact. I also add the olive oil. Any ideas?
Mine don’t either, and I can’t figure it out :/ I love cookies when they’re flat & crispy. I pretty much followed this recipe to a T, except used regular whole wheat flour and silpat mats.
When I’ve researched how to get cookies to turn out flat and crispy, everything said to use a lottt of butter, which I’d rather avoid! I like to keep em healthy as a cookie can be.
I just made these. i didnt have flax seed, so i used 1tbl flax oil with 3 tbl water and 1/2 tbl chia seed. also i left out the molasses because i didnt have any. they came out great, i can only imagine how good they will be when i use the extra ingredients that i left out. thanks :)
I made these last night for my non-vegan husband who despairs at my constant less-than-successful attempts to make fancy vegan cookies. So I decided to get back to basics…two thumbs way up! These are delicious and easy and he ate half the batch before they were cooled :-)
Hi! Cute blog!
I just wanted to say that these are the best vegan chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever made. So simple too! Thank you!
So glad to hear that!
I’m running to my kitchen right now to make them! Just finished making the homemade strawberry jam oat bars ! My house smells so good I could eat it!! Can’t wait to make these! :) I’ve been looking for a quick, easy vegan cookie for a while too, perfect timing!
Where do you find the dark chocolate chips that don’t have milk products in it?! I have looked everywhere! I’m just dying to try this !!
Look in the natural food section of your grocery store, that’s where I’ve had most luck. I just check the label as make sure there is no actual dairy in it. Many dark chips that are organic are also vegan. Sometimes you can even find them in the bulk bins too. Goodluck!
Hi Angela!
I was looking for a good cookie recipe to bake and bring into work to share with my co-workers to show them how delicious vegan baking can be – and of course I started with a search on your recipage. Lucky me, this recipe popped up and I had everything in my kitchen, perfect! I got to work and whipped them up quickly. I actually refrigerated the batter and had to bake them later in the evening and they came out perfectly. This is the best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever!! I’ve been at work for only an hour and a half and they’re almost gone. People have also asked for the recipe so I’ve been raving all about you and sharing your blog. Thanks for all the work you do and all the recipes you share. You’re the best :)
I tried these, but used applesauce (unsweetened) instead of earth balance and oil and they turned out delicious! Thank you! I am new to the whole vegan thing, and I am learning…
Oh my! These are just yum. I looove the crispy-chewy texture!
Was looking to try out a choc chip cookie recipe that was vegan as my brother has just become a convert. I am paleo type eater myself but these turned out great or either lifestyle. Crispy on the outside and a bit of chew in the middle. I my cookies seem puffy when taking out of the oven, I give the cookie sheet a good whack or two on top of the stove. They immediately obey and transform into a perfectly textured cookie with the perfect thickness. Not to mention it feels good to release a bit of of energy this way, esp since it is for a good cause. Try it. I used Spectrum organic palm oil shortening coz I’m trying to use up mine. I used coconut oil instead of olive. I try to stay away from soy. Next time I will try using all coconut oil/olive oil as I don’t care for the taste of palm oil. Baked for 12 minutes and cooled on cookie sheet.
just tried these!! (a little late, I know)
I subbed coconut oil for the earth balance, brown rice flour for the all purpose flour. Turned out great!!
I may try to do gluten free apf next time and see how it works!
AMazing recipe! Thanks again :)
I just want to say I am LOVING your blog! I came across it tonight. I’m trying to eat a more “vegan” diet and I have nut allergies. Please keep up the recipes! It’s so hard to find yummy meals that don’t call for nuts.
I made these yesterday and I really enjoyed the raw dough–no eggs to give me salmonella right?! Unfortunately, the cookies were good but I overcooked them and they are too crisp. I live in Denver, Colorado and routinely have to tweek baking recipes for the mile-high altitude. I increased the oven time as well as oven temperature–in retrospect I probably should have done one of these only. BUT they are still good just not soft and chewy on inside like I like–bring on the non-dairy milk for dunking or coconut ice cream–! humm how i’m thinking!!
I made these last night and they’re hard to stop eating!!!
It looks very yummy I will try it out tonight! However, I couldn’t understand what’s Earth Balance. I checked the website but there are no stores that sell these products here! :( What can I use as a substitute?
Do you have any non-dairy margarine?
These were fantastic! I brought them to the Freshman Fair at my school and they helped me recruit a lot of people to our animal/human rights club! The non-vegans were all surprised by how good they were and I got a big hug from a senior who was vegan and unable to find anything else to eat.
Angela your recipes have helped me to successfully convert my carnivorous husband and picky three year old into fans of my Vegan cooking. Thank you! For these cookies would whole wheat flour work INSTEAD of pastry four? I couldnt find any in town….but I just ordered some on amazon. My kids are excited to bake cookies today…and I might be a little bit anxious to eat them. :)
Thank you Kimberly! You are too kind. :) As for the flour, whole wheat might result in denser or drier cookies. I would first try subbing 50% whole wheat and using all purpose for the other half. Let me know how it goes!
I’m totally new to this so I’m sorry for being clueless, but I’ve seen that you list Earth-Balance in some of your recipes and I have no idea what that is. I clicked the link and it looks like Earth Balance is a brand that has a lot of different foods so I wasn’t sure what you’re using. Please tell me, these look delicious and I want to make them!
Hey Stacy, I use the Soy Free Earth Balance in the tub. Hope this helps!
OMG. These were soooo delicious! I put a scoop of Tofutti Vanilla Almond Bark Ice Cream in between two of them and ate it as a late night snack. ♥♥♥
I just made these and OMG they’re so good! Thanks for another great recipe! I’ll be lucky if these cookies last until the end of the day!
Hi! We LOVE this recipe!! I recently made some for a friend and they loved them too! She asked for the recipe and how many calories were in one? Do you know?
Im sorry I dont have the info!
Just made these – they are delicious!! Thank-you for the recipe!
Can I use all purpose white flour or regular whole wheat flour? I don’t have any pastry flour on hand… Thanks!
I cant see why not :) Let me know if you try it!
Where do you find non dairy chocolate chips?!?! I’ve tried carob and I’m not really a fan..
many brands of dark chocolate chips are dairy-free. Just be sure to check the label first!
Hi there,
By the way the cookies look yummy:)
I was just wondering what earth balance is so i googled it.
Which earth balance product does this recipie require?? Is it the shortening??
Thank you kindly,
Lisa
Hi Lisa, I think I used soy free in the tub, but Im sure their sticks would work as well. I just prefer the soy free flavour. Enjoy!
Every time I make these cookies they come out really runny :(. Should I add extra flour??
These cookies are hands down the best cookies I have ever made! Vegan or not, they are magic!! I have tried the recipe both with regular flour and Bobs Red Mill gluten free flour, and they are equally perfect! Just a tip if anybody out there needs to eat gluten free and wants to try your cookie recipe. BTW, I think the cinnamon added in these are what makes them extra special – I adore cinnamon! :)
I want to make these for my daughters classroom. I’ve never baked anything gluten free before. If I use Bob’s Red Mill GF Flour do I need to add a thickener for these cookies? I have arrowroot powder, will that work. Also, how much?
Earth Balance has palm fruit in it. What elsa can I use. I’m new at this.
I just made these cookies and the batter was very
Dry and crumby…?
I added water but now it is taking 15 plus minutes
To cook?
Any thoughts?
Hey John, Im not sure why this happened to you. Did you make any changes at all to the recipe? If it’s crumbly that probably means too much dry ingredients like flour. sometimes flour scoops can vary a lot. I’ll be sure to post weights next time.
Well..I just added water and they turned out pretty good
Crispy on the outside soft on the inside.
I used all wwpf..but it shouldn’t make that much of a difference.
Either way I ate too many ….;)
Glad they turned out for you!
I just made these and they’re amazing! I’m not exactly vegan so i used butter instead of Earth Balance. It was my first time baking with flax eggs and it worked cery well. Thanks for the recipe!
I couldn’t resist making a batch of chocolate chocolate chip cookies out of this recipe and they turned out just as good!! I just replaced 3 tablespoons of the flour with cocoa powder. This is definitely one of the best recipes I’ve ever tried and it doesn’t even have eggs!!
Hands down the best vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe ever! This will be heavy circulation in my house. Thank you!!!
This is my favorite vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe! I’ve made them for non-vegans and they are always well received. Thank you!
I just mixed up a batch of these and I can see right now that one batch will not be enough (almost didn’t make it to the oven the dough is so good!)! I used a combination of rice flour, whole wheat and white pastry flour, and added sliced almonds for fun. Almost forgot the Tbs. of olive oil, and mixed it in at the end….am (un)patiently watching them melt in the oven right now. Yum!
Just made these last night. I think these are the best vegan cookies I’ve tried to date! I added 1/2 c walnuts and used a combo of Earth Balance stick butter and coconut oil. Delicious results! Thank you for the recipe! I will be making these again soon for my non-vegan parents.
Can I use whole wheat flour instead of pastry flour?
I can’t see why not! Let us know how it goes if you try it.
Greetings from Hamburg, Germany!
Sadly, my cookies did not flat down! Any idea what went wrong? I did the olive oil version.
Only thing I can think of is that the margarine was not fluffy enough… In addition the balls were very powdery.
sigh.
Hoping to get the same result as in the photos one day!
Thanks!
I made these last night with regular whole wheat flour, vegan becel, and 1/4 cup maple syrup instead of white sugar. Yum! My kids love them:)
I just have to say that this recipe is amazing. I had to substitute the earth balance with coconut oil as I had none in my house and don’t even know where I can find it in this small town I live in. Taste great though! My kids go crazy for them!!!
For some reason my dough turned out really goopy and thin, whereas yours looks doughy and thick–I was not able to shape it into balls like you did. Any idea why this could happen?
Hi Lauren, Did you perhaps melt the butter first? I almost did, then at the last minute just let it get to roomish temperature.
Just made these tonight and we love them! I made my own multigrain flour (equal parts spelt, brown rice and hulled barley, all milled together in my Vitamix dry goods container) instead of the wheat and all purpose flours… just ate a few as my dinner. They were lovely!
Hi! I have recently made the switch to vegan living, so some of the terms are a little foreign to me. When you say Earth Balance, what do you mean? I went to the website, but they have so many options, so I wasn’t sure which to buy. Also, are those items available in stores? Thank you!!
Hey Megan, I dont use EB often but when I do I use the soy-free red tub. hope this helps!
Just made these, they’re rising in the oven :) smells amazing!
Oh my goodness I just baked these cookies and they are sooooo good. Seriously the best chocolate chip cookie I’ve ever made. Thanks for sharing! I’ll be making a double batch next time ;-)
Omg this was so good! I kept eating the dough! I made it exactly as is but added more chocolate chips and just used all purpose unbleached flour :) it was so good! Question though does that egg replacement work in other things?
These are incredible! I’m not a vegan and still will choose to make these over a traditional recipe. I made them tonight and ate way too many! Delicious recipe Angela!
What is Earth Balance? The link doesn’t show anything
Here it is: http://www.earthbalancenatural.com/ I use the soy-free in the red tub.
what is a flax egg? do yu mean flax seed oil?
thanks
I just became vegan two months ago and I have REALLY enjoyed it and I feel great! I love to cook and I’ve looked forward to every meal. I’m so inspired by your blog. So I’m not a fan of chocolate chips in cookies, I know sounds ridiculous! But I substituted the chocolate chips for cranberries and added orange zest and my roommates could not stop raving about the cookies. Thanks for being an inspiration!
Hi Angela,
I was wondering how you managed to get your cookies so flat and thin. Mine was thick and chunky like those from Famous Amos cookies. I tried baking them at 10 minutes and they were really soft. I tried another batch at 14 minutes and they were crunchy goodness, so that they did not look as good as yours.
Do let us know if there are any other tips!
Cheers,
Priscilla
hi, I’ve made these before they are delicious! and addicting, although is there any other think=g i can use instead of the brown sugar? like a coconut sugar or maybe sucanat? thanks let me know
Yes either sucanat or coconut sugar should be just fine. :) enjoy
These are hands down the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever had! Thanx so much for this (& all) the great recipes!!!
I made these last night and they were delicious. I only had spelt flour so I used that instead, as well I forgot the olive oil…they tasted a bit like peanut butter chocolate chip even though they had no peanuts…my son made sure to remind me to pack them with his lunch today :) Thank you.
One more thing…this was my first time trying the flax egg!!! I will never use a real egg in another recipe again!!! So excited with the way this turned out.
so glad you enjoyed it Sheena!!
These are some of the best vegan chocolate chip cookies I’ve come across! I’d love to see a recipe with oats, too!
Do you think you could replace the earth balance with coconut oil?
These are fantastic cookies! I omitted the cinnamon and used Earth Balance only (no 1 tbsp oil substitute), but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. Mine had to bake for 13-14min on a silpat in order to really be “done”. Note that I used an icecream scoop for the dough. I got about 12 cookies. The next day they were soft and slightly chewy (not overbaked). Fresh from the oven they have a slight crisp. So delicious! Way better than Toll House cookies.
Hi,
thank you for posting such fabulous recipes,I am yrying to recreate most of your chocolate recipes.I was about to do this one but stopped at Earth Balance.I live in the Netherlands so that might be the reason why this doesn’t ring a bell.I clicked on it and a website with this brand name appeared.Help!
One more question, what so you mean when you write 1/2cup+1/3cup brown sugar. Why not 2/3 brown sugar right away.I am having trouble understanding how to use that in yhe process of baking. Thanks a lot for your help!cheers,Katka
Hi Angela! I flopped here–my cookies came out a bit greasy and flat as a pancake (and I had some big ol’ cookie balls in there)! They taste really good, but wondering what I may have done wrong to make ’em deflate like this??
These are scrumptious! I’m snarfing them down now, trying to discuss with God just how many would constitute gluttony… :-)
I just tried making them with Spectrum All vegetable Shortening and they were very yummy. They did not spread out like the pictures here, but they were very tatsty. Thank you very much for your recipe. My daughter has an allergy to egg, soy, peanuts, rye, peas, corn, beef, chicken, turkey, and shellfish. Of course, I am allergic to dairy, so these cookies work for us both!
Made these today. Loved, and so did my omnivorous husband and dad. I made some substitutions based on what I had:
*Subbed egg replacer for the flax egg
*Subbed 1/2 c minus 1 tbsp all purpose flour for the pastry flour
*Used semi-sweet chips (and more than were called for)
*Added some walnuts
*Added a dash of soymilk because the dough looked a little dry (maybe because of the pastry flour or “egg”)
I overcooked mine a bit because they didn’t look done at the 12 min mark. That was a mistake; they just didn’t spread or brown as much as expected, but they were done. I correct that with the second batch – but the crispy ones were good too!
Yum!! Thanks for sharing. Love your recipes :-)
Amazing! my pokies didn’t come out as pretty and crispy looking as yours but boy are they phenomenal! Thanks for a great recipe!!!
You lost me at DARK Choc. I will never be vegan I guess. Was planning on making these for a Church potluck but almost everyone there has expressed their hatred for dark choc. Of course only two in whole church are vegans so maybe they will like them even with the Dark choc. Its been 25yrs since I had Carob, has it gotten better since 1989? If it has maybe I’ll try that.
I made these with applesauce because I was out of Earth Balance. They are very soft but so delicious! I wouldn’t call them a cookie so much as a muffin top. That’s it; a chocolate chip cookie muffin top! Ta Da! New brunch item!
Absolutely delicious! I only one small modification, but it is was wonderful!
Hi,
These look amazing. Is pastry flour subsitutable? Iv’e never used it before and wasn’t sure if I could just use unbleached flour?
I made these with two small changes … used the “method” from America’s Test Kitchen, which involves melting the buttery spread (of course they use butter) and a little more sugar, when “whisked and rested” the butter/sugar mixture 3 times, so the sugar had time to melt some. I just mounded dough with spoons as it was very soft, though I then refrigerated it and made “balls”. Next time I’ll just try this method. But they are divine and I guarantee my boyfriend and his sons will not know they’re vegan.
I just baked THREE batches of these over the span of two days… amazing. Everyone loves them. I did omit the cinnamon though. Delicious, thank you for the recipe.
Perfect! The last vegan CCC recipe I tried was a fail but these turned out exactly how I was hoping. I created a “brownie cookie” by replacing 2 tablespoons of flour with 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder. Uhhh yum!! Highly recommend. I also added 2T almond milk because my batter seemed to need it. I think next time I’ll only use 1T though, if I need extra moisture. I just didn’t want to overwork the dough. After mixing I chilled the dough for an hour or two which I definitely recommend. It helped the cookies spread the perfect amount and stay nice & soft on the inside & crispy on the edges. Also, I used 1 stick EB and about 3/4tsp cinnamon because I’m a cinnamon fiend.
I took these to work and at first no one seemed interested but when I stopped back in the break room a couple hours later, everyone was all over me-asking to bake them all the time! Thanks :)
I love these I only use this recipe I do add 1 cup chocolate chips and I don’t use the other flour I use all purpose
Help!
I followed your recipe exactly, but my cookies turned out very soft and not at all crispy (I added one extra Tsp of olive oil as per your note). They also did not spread very much and instead are still round / ball shaped. Not sure what went wrong? Thanks.
Hey Angela,
I made these gorgeous cookies today! I couldn’t find Pastry Flour in the supermarket, so added 1 tbsp corn starch to 1/2 cup of all purpose flour instead and it worked perfectly.
My cookies baked for about 13 minutes, were crispy on the outside and chewy inside. One thing I did notice was that the batter didn’t spread as much as yours have, but they were still ABSOLUTELY delicious and my friends love me and YOU for it!
Thank you so much again, lots of love from Dubai xx
Angela, I made these with a gluten-free modification, and they turned out to be amazing! My non-vegan, non-gf husband and family were ALL over them. They were a great treat to break my 3-month candida diet. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Hi Anita…can you please tell me what gluten free flour you used? Was it a pre mix or did you make your own combination?
Thank you
Latifa
Hi Angela :)……
I have been using your recipes for quite some time now, and it’s one ‘yummy’ review after another! Thank you! And, may I add, LOVE your new cookbook! Just one question about these cookies (which you are right, the dough is DIVINE): when shaping them into balls to bake, they wouldn’t shape….they were too sticky. I just made them into chocolate chip ‘bar pan’ cookies to solve the problem. But, I’m wondering what I could’ve messed up.?. I’m almost positive I didn’t omit, or overuse anything. Any ideas???
Thanks a bunch!
Judi :~)
I finally got around to making these cookies for breakfast this morning – they were delicious! :) I used organic coconut oil instead of vegan butter, so the cookies had a mild coconut flavour, but the texture was perfect and they tasted almost exactly like traditional chocolate chip cookies. Very easy to prepare & bake. Thank you for the recipe!
Oh my goodness! As a long time baker and vegetarian, I have always enjoyed vegan baked goods. However, it’s been awhile since I’ve made a traditional cookie that was vegan friendly. These are by far The BEST vegan chocolate chip cookies ever!!! They taste almost too good to be true. They just came out of the oven and it’s all I can do to stop from eating the whole batch! Thank you for this perfectly yummy recipe- they remind me of the chocolate chip cookies I used to bake with my mom when I was little- except even better because they are vegan :)
Just don’t use Ghiaradelli choc chips, they are NOT vegan. NONE OF THEM! Here’s their reply–

Can anyone let me know if they tried another egg replacer besides the flax egg and had success? I would prefer a flax egg for the nuttiness, but sadly I’m out until next week and need to make cookies *tonight*
I made these last night, and though they were tasty, they spread too much in the oven, with very thin, crispy edges and a thicker center.
:( I followed the recipe well, except that I used a real egg. I guess I should try again with a flax egg. The dough was super, super soft and sticky.
Just tried this out, and the recipe worked out great! Thanks Angela!
This recipe is fantastic! One of the best chocolate chip cookie recipes I’ve tried–vegan or otherwise. I just love the addition of cinnamon in here. It perfectly compliments the nuttiness of the whole wheat flour. I added in some walnuts and it was divine!
hey angela!
what difference would it make if i used only olive oil instead of the butter? my family never has butter in the house!
This is my go-to vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe. It ALWAYS delivers! I have yet to bake a batch that did not result in overjoyed taste testers. Thanks for sharing, my little boy enjoys these as a much deserved treat!
Hi Angela. Do you think coconut palm sugar could replace the white sugar in this recipe? I wouldn’t want to change the taste/texture too much. Thank you!
Latifa
How would I make this recipe gluetine free? Have you experimented with a combination of flours that work well? Thank you
Latifa
This is my first time making vegan cookies and I was wondering if it’s possible to substitute vegan butter with coconut oil ??
I’m not sure if this was ever addressed but I only ever make these cookies with coconut oil and they’re amazing!
I just love the taste it gives and it goes well with almond flour (which I used too).
Thank you!! I ended up buying the earth balance but now I will try these with the coconut oil :)
Mine came out cakey :( suggestions?
Hi Angela! These look great! Can I sub all purpose flour for the whole wheat pastry? I wanted to make these tomorrow for a friend’s birthday, and I don’t have easy access to whole wheat pastry flour. Thank you!
has anybody tried using regular whole wheat flour instead of the pastry flour? What’s the difference in that?
I was so excited for these. I tried the fluffier option with no olive oil and they did not go very well. :(
I make these every single week with my 3 year old. He absolutely loves them!
I just made these. They are beyond delicious. And so easy to make. Thank you thank you thank you!
Tried these today. Delicious. Used coconut sugar and got a great caramel flavor, but wish they were a little crisper. Wondering if I should have baked longer, skipped the parchment, or used more olive oil. I was able to get them crispier by browning them in the toaster. In any event, my kids loved them.
I made these tonight, but didn’t have enough vegan margarine so, I used coconut oil. They were so good!!! Crispy AND chewy! I was too impatient to wait the 5 minutes for them to cool on the sheet. They were in my mouth within a minute and a half.
I was a little worried the dough was too wet, but they are pretty darn tasty!
I just took the last batch out of the oven and I must say I really love these little cookies. Since my cupboard held less sugar than required and only all purpose flour they are smaller, didn’t run out a lot so are not as thin as yours. But they are delightful! A hint of sugary sweetness which is just enough. I used a Tbsp rice oil and they do have a crunchy outside and a little chewy center. The mixture made 20 small cookies for me. Thanks a lot for the recipe Angela :) I’ll bring them to a potluck tonight.
I accidentally used almond meal/flour instead of cane sugar – woops! My husband enjoyed them just as much. They have a tiny bit of a salty taste to them, but are nice, more “savoury” cookies. As well, I used 1/4 cup whole wheat flour instead of 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour, as I didn’t have the pastry flour. Worked just as fine. :)
Hi! I am new to your blog and I am loving it!!! Thanks!!
One question about the cookies, can I replace the butter with coconut oil? I don’t have access to earth balance where I live.
Hi
I am fairly new to baking. I love crunchy cookies. I have all the ingredients except for whole wheat pastry flour. I have whole wheat flour though – we make flat bread with it. Please can you let me know if I use it will my cookies still be crunchy? Thanks.
Made these… turned out so good. Next time I make them for non-vegans, I think I’ll use only white flour. Tried to make them healthier by using mostly whole wheat, they are still good, but have a mealy taste after a few bites.
Sent these with my husband to his work for a potluck. I just got a text, “Please send the recipe! Everyone loves them!” He’s the only vegan there by a long shot, and I just love when people enjoy a vegan treat.
Hello,
Just made these tonight…..and, not to overstate it, I’m pretty sure I heard choirs of angels. I have to admit that while the photos are alluring and the comments positive, every blogger claims that their xyz recipe is THE BEST! So when I saw this one, I thought well I’ll give it a try, but won’t be surprised if the results are less than perfect. Wow–despite that fact that I flat out forgot to add the olive oil, these cookies really were perfection. They were tender and chewy with a light crispness at the edges. Didn’t get a chance to test the storage observations made below as, the entire batch lasted my clan about a half hour!
I tried to make these cookies, eagerly awaiting a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies after going vegan a little while ago. But they came out flat and crumbly, not at all like the pics! Help! Any words of advice?
These look amazing! Do you think I could use all coconut oil instead of vegan butter?
I made these cookies and I’m so disappointed. Not sure why but my cookies did not form together they are very crumbly and they fall apart super easily
Could you use just all brown sugar? I don’t have any cane sugar
I’m eating one of these right now and I have to say they are AMAZING. I used the same amount of GF all purpose flour and they turned out great. The only problem is I can’t stop eating them! I will be making these again for sure, thanks so much for the recipe :)
I have tried many vegan recipes for chocolate chip cookies and seem to have the same problem with all of them so far. They come out like pancakes. I have been a baker for many years now and some of the family has developed food allergies necessitating the need to bake some things without diary or egg. I just tried the chocolate chip cookies from your website today (which look awesome in the pictures) and they came out the same way. I want to say that it is the vegan buttery sticks. It’s the only thing that makes sense to me but then I am not used to vegan baking. Any suggestions? Thank you.
I didn’t have whole wheat pastry flour, so I substituted 1/2 cup of oat flour and added an extra 1/4 of all purpose flour- it came out DELICIOUS. They have a wonderful bite to them now. I doubled the recipe and am giving them to friends. :)
I’ve made these twice in 10 days — the first with all all purpose flour, tonight with 1/4 c whole wheat flour (not pastry) – and they are consistently delicious. The whole wheat version is more “cake” like, if that your preference. I was hook line and sinker for the non whole wheat….
I just made these for my daughter. We just found out she has food allergies. But the didn’t spread at all and look more like more like cookie balls. Any idea what I could have done wrong?
This dough tastes amazing!!!! I have been looking for a vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe that will fool my fiance who is not vegan. I think this might do it! Thanks!
We’ve been making these every night for the past 2 weeks.. and devouring them all within the first hour haha I’ve ran out of vegan butter and dont feel like making more atm, can i use coconut oil?
Haha that’s awesome, Jazminn! I’m happy you love the cookies so much. I believe a few others have tried – and had luck with – substituting butter with coconut oil. They just reported that the cookies had a slight coconut flavour to them. Good luck!
totally craving these cookies! I’m gonna make them this afternoon! But just a question, could I replace the vegan butter with coconut oil?
I’ve made these cookies this evening and they are amazing! They’re sweet and crunchy and I might or might not have eaten a fourth of the whole batch… too good! Thanks for the recipe :)
Ahaha, so glad the cookies were a hit, Isabella! :)
Hi All,
Just made an incredible discovery which may be of interest. These chocolate chip cookies are my absolute favourite, but from time to time family and friends like a little variation. So, today I tried using the base cookie dough from this recipe and combining the add in ingredients from Momofuku’s compost cookies (apparently Anderson Cooper’s favourite treats?). Anway, the result was out of this world!!! So for the next bake sale, I’ll be making a batch of both the classic chocolate chip cookie (to die for) and the compost cookie variation (also utterly irresistable)! Yummers! Happy dunking everyone:)
These cookies are so delicious!! My family (not vegan) were thoroughly impressed and couldn’t believe they were vegan! These are definitely my go-to cookies now because of how easy and yummy they are!
I’m so glad the cookies are a hit, Shay! :) It’s always great to hear when something’s a crowd-pleaser.
I’m sure it may be posted, but in a timesaving effort so I don’t have to scroll through all 300+ comments, can I just use regular All Purpose Flour for the entire recipe instead of whole wheat pastry flour? Also, I use EnerG egg replacer in most of my scratch baking, would that be OK to use here as well, or just stick with the flax egg for best results/flavor? Thanks, Kathy =)
Hey Kathy, Unfortunately, I haven’t tested it myself, but I believe a number of other readers have had success using regular AP flour. I’m not sure about the egg replacer…if you decide to experiment, I’d love to hear how it goes!
these totally flattened out!!!!!! What did i do wrong? they came out flat but were still tasty. I know cookies naturally flatten as they cook but these ones are just a bit like pancakes.
mine too!
the dough tastes great but they were too flat to remove from the baking sheet.
anyone make these and not have them come out flat?
I expect it’s because of the oil/ vegan butter (which tends to be oil-based). It might help to chill the dough first to the oil melts less quickly. Perhaps replace some of the oil with apple sauce.
This is simply THE BEST vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe! I use Ener-G egg replacer instead of flax eggs–flax eggs taste bitter and fishy to me.
Um, Angela. I made these today and they were amazing. I used part coconut oil and apple sauce….quite yummy. Thank you for sharing.
So glad you’re enjoying the recipe, Shea! Happy eating :)
Made these using only all-purpose flour and they were really good! When you bake longer they get crispy with soft middles. These would fool any omni who thinks eggs and butter are necessary for good cookies.
I’m so happy you love them, thanks for letting me know about the all-purpose flour, too. :)
Hi Angela, I love your recipes. I’m living in S.Korea and don’t think I can find Vegan butter. do you think coconut oil will work fine in this recipe? TIA
Hey Stephany, I’m not sure if it’ll work, but I think it could?
Best vegan cookies !
I have been using this recipe for years & I don’t usually leave comments but I had to say something about this recipe. This is my absolute go-to cookie recipe for people who are skeptics of vegan food. No other cookie recipes can top this texture, and I feel like I always get consistent results with this recipe. My coworkers (big southern BBQ/meat lovers) are always asking for me to bring these in and had no idea it was vegan. 😊 So thankful to have found your blog years ago & have this recipe as a dessert staple!
