Blendtec Giveaway!

by Angela (Oh She Glows) on August 12, 2011

Nothing like a Blendtec giveaway and 3 new smoothie recipes to kick off the weekend, right?

Happy Friday indeed!

Blendtec sent me a refurbished Blendtec Total Blender to review on the blog. I’m going to have a fun little giveaway to get your own engines revving and give this beast away to one lucky reader.

And boy, is this thing a beast!

As you may know, I purchased a Vitamix last year and I’m in love with it. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the Blendtec. My standards are pretty high when it comes to blenders, so I’m a tough cookie smoothie!

This is a refurbished machine, which means that it was slightly used but it was inspected and processed in the Blendtec factory to restore it to ‘like new’ condition. Honestly, you’d never be able to tell that this machine wasn’t brand spanking new! It is in mint condition. You can also save quite a bit of money if you purchase their refurbished models.

Plus, you get to be all eco-friendly by recycling…what’s not to love?

Here are some specs:

  • You can make smoothies, fresh juice, ice cream, milkshakes, cappuccinos, margaritas, soups, sauces, bread dough, dressings, salsas and more
  • The Total Blender comes with an exclusive Smart-Touch Technology which means when a cycle button is pushed, the Total Blender automatically speeds up and slows down, then shuts off when the cycle is complete.
  • It turns ice to snow and actually comes with an Ice-Crushing Guarantee and has1560 Watts of blending power
  • Blender includes: 32 oz. BPA free wet + dry container, Total Blender Motor Base, FourSide Pitcher, Vented Pitcher Lid, Recipe Book, Owner’s Manual, instructional CD
  • It has 6 pre-programmed blend cycles (below) that are designed to produce optimum results for a range of blending tasks such as soups and sauces or whole juice. The instruction manual tells you how long each cycle goes for and it’s also displayed on the screen when blending.
  • The pitcher is a wet and dry which means you don’t have to purchase another container like you do with the Vitamix.

After reading up on this bad boy, I threw a blending party and Eric and I got to be the lucky taste-testers!

Of course, the ultimate test for any blender is a Green Monster smoothie made with KALE! If you’ve ever made a smoothie with kale and it was chunky, I feel your pain. I suffered through that for a couple years before I finally bought my Vitamix beast.

After putting in my Green Monster ingredients, I hit the ‘smoothie’ button. I quickly realized that the smoothie setting (30 seconds) was probably not intended for Green Monsters because the greens didn’t pulverize enough after 30 seconds. I ended up blending for 3 smoothie cycles (1.5 minutes) instead of one.

After 1.5 minutes, it blended well and the kale was virtually smooth, but perhaps not as smooth as the Vitamix. It was a really close call, but I found the Blendtec was a tiny bit more coarse in texture as compared to my GM’s made with the Vitamix.

But again, it was so close, it’s almost a non-issue. And I’m sure many people don’t blend kale like my crazy self!

edited to add: Some of you told me to use the LIQUIFY setting for kale as it works much better! Good to know. :)

Up next, I made a few fruit smoothies and I was very pleased with the outcome. Open-mouthed smile

Strawberry Cherry Basil                         Mango Coconut Cream                           Banana Data Cinnamon

These smoothies turned out I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E.

I tried another ultimate test for this beast- grinding flax. I’ve used a few blenders in the past that didn’t grind flax well, so I was anxious to test it out with the Blendtec.

Let’s just say it was PULVERIZED! Amazing job!!!

All in all, I think the Blendtec Total Blender is a great machine.

Here are some specifics that I love about it:

  • Shorter height (15”) compared to Vitamix (20.5”) which means that it will fit under any counter top
  • Easy to remove lid (I find the Vitamix lid is hard to put on and off)
  • BPA free container
  • Digital display (while not necessary, it is sleek and fun)
  • No need for a Tamper stick like you need with the Vitamix. (The Tamper stick is included with a Vitamix to help push down and process ingredients. No need for this with the Blendtec)
  • Contemporary & sleek design! Looks great on the counter.
  • Wet + dry container all in one

Now how about some of those smoothie recipes to kick off the weekend?

Mango Coconut Cream Smoothie

  • 1.25 cups coconut water
  • 1 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1/2 frozen banana (or 1/4 cup coconut ice cream)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds or ground flax (optional)

Strawberry Cherry Basil Smoothie

(My fav new smoothie!)

  • 1/4 cup (or a bit less) loosely packed basil (trust me it WORKS!)
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 3/4 cup pitted and frozen cherries
  • 1/2 cup hulled and frozen strawberries
  • Chia seeds or flax (optional)

Banana Date Cinnamon Smoothie

  • 1 frozen banana (peel before freezing)
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 pitted medjool date
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

By the way, what the heck is this? Nooooooooooo!!!!

I feel like my dream kitchen would include both my beloved Vita and a Blendtec. A gal can dream, right? :)

Thanks for the giveaway! Fingers crossed!

Man, i would LOVE to have a blender! I am a vegan who works at a coffeeshop, so most days (like today) I bring all my smoothie ingredients to work just so i can have one on my lunchbreak. Would be AWESOME having one at home so i don’t have to drag all my fruits and veggies to work :)

Shannon August 17, 2011 at 9:22 am

Great review! I’m looking for the best blender out there.

Tamara @ The Stretch Jean Incident August 17, 2011 at 9:40 am

I would love to win this!

Erin August 17, 2011 at 1:03 pm

I have been in love with these smoothies since I first started reading OSG! It would be so nice to have such an amazing blender at home–my food processor will only do so much!

Nunu August 17, 2011 at 1:26 pm

wow…didn’t think a blender could do so much! i liquidize most meals due to ill health and have been looking for something so powerful having gone through so many smoothie makers/blenders/magic bullet, thanks for the tip & the excellent blog :) fingers crossed!

Cori August 17, 2011 at 2:06 pm

I would love one! I actually have some kale I cooked and froze, and I haven’t had the courage to try it in a smoothie yet.

Mrs. Pingel August 17, 2011 at 2:53 pm

I was just telling someone how badly I wanted one! Crossing my fingers!

Barb August 17, 2011 at 3:28 pm

Can’t wait to try a green smoothie! :)

Caitlin August 17, 2011 at 3:45 pm

A quality blender is the kitchen appliance I have been coveting the most! Chunky smoothies in a bowl are better than nothing, but I would love to create a smoothie that turns out as well as yours look! Not to mention a million other kitchen endeavors filed under “when I get a good blender”! Thank you so much, Angela!

Joeynumber41 August 17, 2011 at 4:24 pm

I always love a new smoothie recipe. Thanks!

Aneta August 17, 2011 at 5:12 pm

I LOVE your blog! I love looking through your recipes and your pictures of ingredients, step by step prep and of course the final product. I will not look at a recipe book if it is not accompanied by pictures. That’s how I roll :) I follow recipies based on how they look. From that I think I can tell whether they are tasty or not. They have to appeal to all of my senses. Fantastic job! My 9yr old daughter was recently diagnosed with Celiac so any help in the kitchen department is always greatly appreciated :) Would love to win the blender as well :)

Allie August 17, 2011 at 8:05 pm

This poor college kid would love a high speed blender :).

Laura LaMontanaro August 17, 2011 at 10:28 pm

I have a vitamix, and I love love love it! I have a large family, so another machine (especially with the ice crushing option) would be wonderful.

Jennifer August 17, 2011 at 11:10 pm

I would love a high speed blender but can’t afford one right now. One can hope can’t she??? LOL

Courtney August 17, 2011 at 11:58 pm

I love the idea of adding basil to a fruit smoothie. I’m going to try that!

Cat August 18, 2011 at 1:07 am

Oh I think I missed the draw! My blender broke last night and I would just LOVE to get a really good one but can’t afford it as a student!

Ashley - Freshly Vegetarian August 18, 2011 at 2:55 am

I’m feeling inspired to whip up a smoothie after reading your posts here (especially w/ that banana-date smoothie — yeehaw!). Here’s to hoping for a Blendtec!

Andrew August 18, 2011 at 7:22 am

Can’t wait to start smoothie-making! Thanks for the tips and the giveaway!

Samantha August 18, 2011 at 7:41 am

That blender looks amazing–as do the smoothies that you made! I would love to make my smoothies with it! :)

Hilary August 18, 2011 at 7:45 am

I would love to have a Blendtec! My $30 Oster does pretty good for what it is, but there is no chance of making nut butter in it! Plus my smoothies with oatmeal still have tiny little chunks. Your smoothie recipes look wonderful, I will have to try them!

Nathalie August 18, 2011 at 7:50 am

Angela – It’s great to have found you here in Canada!! So happy to see some PC products and familiar things I can use in my smoothies (and other recipes!) I currently only have a Magic Bullet to make them. The poor thing is getting overworked… A Blendtec would be most welcome ;-)

Frances August 18, 2011 at 8:11 am

I’m a smoothie lover and a quality blender would be wonderful!

Cathy August 18, 2011 at 8:18 am

I’d love to try out that kale smoothie; it looks delicious!

Amy H August 18, 2011 at 9:59 am

I’ve always wondered how the Blendtec compares to the Vitamix. I’m in the market for a new blender (um, I currently use an old single serving, single speed blender that is on its very last leg) so it was great to see this review on your blog:)

Julia August 18, 2011 at 11:01 am

That looks amazing!
I’ve loved making Green Monsters but really struggle with my antique blender!

Sara August 18, 2011 at 12:44 pm

I purchased a “magic bullet” like blender about a year ago. I was pleased with the easy clean up, small size, and convenience of popping a lid on the same container it was mixed it. However, about 2 wks ago, it started leaking motor oil into my smoothie!!!!!!! I was so disgusted. I hope that this hasnt been happening long before I noticed! Anyway, I am going back and forth between getting a nice, big, multi-purpose blender, or going for another cheaper/single use blender….This could be my chance at a nice blender! COME ON BIG MONEYYYYYYYY! :)

Mary August 18, 2011 at 1:59 pm

This Blendtec seems amazing! Since I currently use my food processor as a blender, the Blendtec would save me so much time and I would experiment with plenty more recipes with it. It would also be great for blending gelato ingredients before freeze blending them =)

Stephanie O August 18, 2011 at 3:06 pm

Angela ~ Did you post who won? My apologies if I missed the announcement!

Angela (Oh She Glows) August 18, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Yes I did, at the bottom of yesterdays post. She’s been contacted. Goodluck next time Stephanie!

Elena August 18, 2011 at 3:07 pm

Oh, I would LOVE to win one of these bad boys, so I can give it to a very deserving family, in which both husband and wife are fighting cancer.

Kelly August 18, 2011 at 5:19 pm

I would love a new blender! I am trying to eat more natural, and have gotten in to smoothies but my blender is sub-par! I will give it such a great home! :)

Lindsey August 18, 2011 at 6:59 pm

I would like to try your recipes but first I need the blender… Hope I win!!

Joanna August 19, 2011 at 8:56 am

I’m dying for a great blender but don’t have the $$ to get a good Vitamix or something. My favorite smoothie is a green smoothie, similar to the GM but not the same: Kale (or other dark leafy, i.e. spinach or chard), lettuce, one lg cucumber, about 3 stalks of celery, green apple (a whole one!), chia seeds (optional) and a little lemon juice. The taste of the tart green apple and the fresh cucumber is soooo good!
Thanks for sharing your smoothie recipes and I hope I’m not too late for the blender giveaway!
