16 Reasons Why I Love My Body

by Angela (Oh She Glows) on October 20, 2010

Today is National Love Your Body Day and I thought it would be a great time to stop and reflect on just how awesome we are!

Here is my list:

1a. My smile and sense of humour because I am dorky, goofy, playful, and I love to joke around…

1b. Laughing til I cry because there are few moments in life when I am truly in the moment like that.

2. My body has no ‘imperfections’, just things that add character and make me unique. Freckles, marks, scars, stretch marks, cellulite, spots, wrinkles, etc. give us character and expression. I think one of the most beautiful things a person can have is laugh lines around their eyes!

3. My body never takes a day off, even when I do!

4. I have 206 beautiful bones and one heck of a sexy skeleton (trust me I’ve seen the X-rays. Meow.)

5. My small intestine is over 20 feet long and it still fits inside my body. Creepy, yet awesome.

6. I have a birth mark on the side of my stomach that is Eric’s favourite spot.

7. A number on the scale does not tell me how awesome my body is! The two aren’t even related.

8. I went from running for just a minute at a time and believing that I just wasn’t a ‘runner’ to running 13.1 miles at a time.

9. If I am injured or sick, my body works fast and furiously to heal itself and doesn’t stop until it is ok. When I am asleep it works the hardest!

10. I have super duper taste buds that give me a passion for food, eating, baking, cooking, etc.

11. My beautiful brain. The source of my passions, my emotions, my laughter, my pain, my creativity, my memories.

12. My body has a wicked ‘gut instinct’ and always whispers to me when it feels something isn’t right.

13. It helped me swim for 750 metres in the open water in just 12:54 minutes. It even kept going when my brain wanted to bail.

14. My body learned to trust me again, after over 10 years of disordered eating. My body allows me to eat normal amounts of food and maintain a healthy weight despite not counting calories, obsessing, or working out too much. It also forgives me when I have a bad day and fall back into old habits.

15. My eyes because they allow me to see beauty in everyday things and capture it with photography.

16. There is a ninja hiding inside of me and I believe I could kick some major butt if required. I also believe I may have had a black belt in a former life.

Ok…maybe a yellow belt… ;)

It has run across many tennis courts, and my arms have awesome definition to show it.

Mel October 20, 2010 at 4:07 pm

A reason I love my body and a reason for everyone to love theirs; Your body holds your precious soul safely, it may take a bashing and abuse it may grow old, tired, ugly and often break but your spirit remains eterally young, beautiful and glorious. And when our bodies appear to flaw and fail, our spirit shines out and reveals the real beauty lurking within. Sowhen we look at ourselves or others at a body thats had a hard life, we can remember what it is fighting to protect. :)

Maria @ Oh Healthy Day October 20, 2010 at 4:09 pm

“My body never takes a day off, even when I do”. I love this one! It’s amazing to think that our bodies are constantly working, always improving itself and keeping us alive. What a beautiful thought from a beautiful lady :)

Karen Beth October 20, 2010 at 4:13 pm

I love my body because it held up through reconstructive back surgery at age 18 and open heart surgery at age 32. It could have easily given up either time but it didn’t.

Christan October 20, 2010 at 4:15 pm

I love this post! Trust me i’ve seen the xrays.. meow.. LMAO

Julie Grice October 20, 2010 at 4:28 pm

I used to dislike the fact that I couldn’t wear tall boots, and then I realized it is because of my calf muscles. Now, I love my muscular legs–they allowed me to bike over 200 miles in 6 days two weeks ago!

Hope October 20, 2010 at 4:33 pm

This is awesome – your post made me smile :)
I love my body because it proves to me every single day, how amazing and unique it really is. I mistreated it, abused it and hated it in the past, and yet it bounced back strong and healthy.

Tiffany @ Eat, Run, Write, Love October 20, 2010 at 4:34 pm

I love that my body is so forgiving, even when I treated it so bad for so long, I have achieved and now maintain a healthy weight. I also how amazing my body is for giving me two beautiful daughters and enabling me to run and do yoga. :)

Moni'sMeals October 20, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Again, posts like this is why WE LOVE YA!

I work with a lot of different clients with all different body types. But what keeps me humble is when I work with clients with diabilities or muscle or bone imbalances or injuries were they are “limited” and it really makes you think how lucky we ALL are to just hop out of bed in the moring. I remind myself that every morning actually and it really has changed my life. ;)

I love my body because it never lets me down, I get back what I put in. I give thanks to it, It works, it is healthy, it is strong, and it loves me and I love it. :) If it talks back, I LISTEN!

Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf October 20, 2010 at 4:39 pm

I love that you say you have no “imperfections.” I think so many people say that they love and appreciate their body the way it is, but in some way still calling it “imperfect” ( “beautifully imperfect” or “beautiful despite imperfection”) is still in some roundabout way admitting that you believe these differences are flaws. Thank you for the wonderful insight!

Freya October 20, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Ok, I have to bookmark this post – your 16 reasons have just given me one giant big lift :) THANK YOU!

[email protected] October 20, 2010 at 4:41 pm

*love* it!

I love my body because it still trusts me…even if I have given it reason not to. I love it because it’s giving me another chance to prove just how much I love and appreciate it.

Lisa October 20, 2010 at 4:43 pm

I love my body because I can swim fast and for a long time! Having a healthy, muscular body does that!

brianna October 20, 2010 at 4:46 pm

i love my body because it is healthy, forgiving, and dependable! i also love what you said about your eyes….i love that my eyes allow me to see, and also to change the way i see…..

Sassy Molassy October 20, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Such a great post. I do love the fact that even when we are resting, our bods are work, work, working away. Thanks for the reminder.

I love that my body tells me what my brain always knows and ultimately tells me sometimes more about what’s happening metaphorically in my life than physically. Like when I’m running it ragged and stressing out about everything, my body starts aching or a sore throat shows up reminding me that I need to slow the heck down and relax once in a while.

Olya October 20, 2010 at 5:02 pm

Thank you for the post, Angela! It just reminded me yet again why I should ignore naughty thoughts of dieting etc etc

I love my body because like a true friend it has stayed with me through good and bad (even when I was the one who was insulting my true friend).

I love my brain too because it proves me that with enough patient and perseverance I can understand things that sometimes seem to be out of the scope of my natural abilities.

Bridget October 20, 2010 at 5:02 pm

I love these posts! So inspiring! Thank you for sharing it with us :)

I love my body because it knows what it wants and is able to communicate it with us in so many ways. When we listen to it , that is what makes us healthy, not ignoring it.

Mrs. Muffins October 20, 2010 at 5:29 pm

Honestly, I could come up with a lot of reasons why I don’t think my body is awesome but all it takes is one look at my daugter to remember the one reason all those others don’t matter.

My body is awesome because it went through 40 weeks of pregnancy, growing little fingers and toes inside my belly, gave birth just as nature intended and nursed my baby for seven months.

I’m in tears because it’s really hard to let go of the negativity sometimes. I’ve struggled with eating disorders since I was ten years old but being a positive role model for my daughter is so much more important than what size my jeans are. Happy Love Your Body Day!!! xx

Liz @ Tip Top Shape October 20, 2010 at 5:29 pm

I love my body because it’s the only one I get so I might as well not waste time wishing it was something else.

Krystina (Organically Me) October 20, 2010 at 5:41 pm

I love my body because it can do anything. I lost 200lbs and my body transformation helped save my life.

AGS October 20, 2010 at 5:57 pm

I love that my body, mind, and emotions are beautifully intertwined; and growth in one area, translates to growth in others. Each year, I feel/understand/learn/do things I didn’t the year before.

zoe (and the beatles) October 20, 2010 at 5:58 pm

aw i loved this!

especially the bit about your skeleton! it made me laugh :)

i love my body because it healed itself after being inflicting with months of ill treatment. i love my body because it clearly knows how to treat me well when i treat it well, too. i love my body and it loves me back! i can feel it :)

Mary @ Bites and Bliss October 20, 2010 at 6:17 pm

Lauren October 20, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Hi Angela,

I wanted to let you know that my friend came over today and we talked a lot about body image stuff and all the struggles she is going through. I immediately thought of you and directed her to Oh She Glows. She has already read Part I of your Road to Health Series and says she can relate so much. She told me that she now feels excited and inspired!! See how many people you help? :) The world is a better place because of you…bold statement, but true. :) Happy National Love Your Body Day!!! :D

Susan October 20, 2010 at 6:45 pm

I love my body because it has the ability to heal!

Wei-Wei October 20, 2010 at 6:46 pm

What a powerful, positive post! You just made my morning :D

Savannah P October 20, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Thank you so much for this beautiful post <3 It just brightened my spirits so!

I love my body because it has never failed me, even when I neglected it. It has carried me through the lowest points of my life, and into my highest, and promises to continue to do so as I age. I love my body because it is made of the best stuff: I have arms to hold and hug, legs that run over every mile I ask them to, a stomach that has forgiven me for years of abuse, and eyes that are constantly baffling me with just how freaking BEAUTIFUL this life is!!!

Melanie October 20, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Great post! You are awesome! Thanks for using my tweet :)

Lizzie October 20, 2010 at 7:17 pm

This is interesting – I didn’t know today was National Love Your Body Day. This morning in my internet travels (and I seriously can’t remember how I ended up on this site – I always start out looking for one subject and end up on about 10 different tangents!), but I can came across this web-site that was all about ‘thinspiration’, providing details on how to diet successfully, photos of models and celebs, diet drugs, how to eat less etc. I know sites like this exist, but to see how sad and desperate some of the readers were . . it made me sad.
I love my body because it takes me to amazing places, and it’s a combination of my mum and dad (the good and the bad!) and I am blessed with the knowledge and opportunity to take care of it.

tina October 20, 2010 at 7:27 pm

i love my body for letting me run 7 miles in 55 minutes even though my brain wanted to go home and be lazy after teaching class at 5am, and then working 10 hours!

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey October 20, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Thank youfor this post! I love my body because it continues to persevere after the abuse (mental and physical) that I’ve given it!!

Camille October 20, 2010 at 7:58 pm

My body is amazing because it has carried me through 2 marathons and a 17 mile hike that ended with my climbing a 200 foot rock where I could have been killed if I lost my balance.
Now that is one kick ass body, flaws and all!

Stacie October 20, 2010 at 8:02 pm

Does Eric like you dipped in chocolate too? he he he….sorry couldn’t resist since he is on a chocolate kick. Wonderful post today! So inspirational :)

Corey @ The Runner's Cookie October 20, 2010 at 8:17 pm

my body is awesome because it’s allowed me to run 4 marathons and to get better at yoga!

Jenny October 20, 2010 at 9:11 pm

I love my body because it is shaped almost identically to my twin’s! And because even when I hated it and hid it, it still worked on fighting sicknesses and all the running I put it through. Why do I feel teary right now? Why are we so hard on ourselves? Our bodies are such awesome things.

Maddie October 20, 2010 at 9:29 pm

I love this post! Especially #4 and 16 haha!
My body is awesome because it carries me through tough workouts and surprises me with it’s strength everyday. It even helped me get a new personal record in my 5k today and tolerates me transitioning to barefoot running. I have a serious case of scoliosis and have to get major back surgery this winter but since my body is awesome I know it will be strong and heal quickly.

Andrea October 20, 2010 at 9:33 pm

My body is amazing for all the things it does for me every day, from dancing to thinking- and when I love it, it loves me right back.

Helen October 20, 2010 at 9:35 pm

I love my body because it has given me two of the greatest gifts one could have. My children!! My body had to go through pregnancy, labor, and delivery, but not once did it let me down. I may have felt like it was going to cave, but in the end it came through. My body gave me both of my sons, it cherished, cared for, and embraced two of the greatest gifts God has given me. My beloved stetch marks, cellulite, spider veins, etc. are proud marks of the miraculous gift of life!

Alexia @ Dimple Snatcher October 20, 2010 at 9:40 pm

love my mouth for kitty kisses!
you inspired me. i did the same thing on my blog.

Heather October 20, 2010 at 9:49 pm

I LOVE my body because it is special. It is mine and “me” at the same time. It’s intelligent in so many ways. It allows me to experience this beautiful thing called life. It allows me to feel, both literally and sensuously.

sarah October 20, 2010 at 10:01 pm

I love my body because it forgives and loves me when I indulge in unhealthy food, also when I exercise it gives me power!

Cynthia October 20, 2010 at 10:05 pm

I love my body because no matter how much I have hurt it in the past with over exercising and undereating (or overeating), my body continuously forgives me, even when I can’t.

Clare @ Fitting It All In October 20, 2010 at 10:15 pm

I put my body through hell, but it recovered beautifully and still works for me every day:) It gets me through long rules, sweaty Bikram classes, and nights out in heels:)

Diana @ frontyardfoodie October 20, 2010 at 10:34 pm

I love my body because it continually surprises me. My latest surprise? I was able to conceive when the doctors told me I wouldn’t be able to and I went on to give birth to the most beautiful boy naturally, without any meds.

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) October 20, 2010 at 10:38 pm

“I think one of the most beautiful things a person can have is laugh lines around their eyes!”–

That’s great b/c I have plenty :)

I love my body b/c it grew a human being. Then nursed that human, my daughter, for 3 years.

I feel proud to have this body because of what it GAVE…it gave me a daughter. The love of my life. The best thing ever. :)

Amber K October 20, 2010 at 11:05 pm

I’m amazed with my body.

It has taken a lot of abuse from me over the years and yet it still keeps going on. While my stomach is SUPER testy when it comes to food, it always forgives me when I eat something that upsets it. It’s always ready for a round 2!

Anonymous October 20, 2010 at 11:21 pm

I really appreciate this post because this is something I have been struggling for a while. I don’t have the courage nor do I know who to talk to about my ED. But it’s good to know that there are people out there who do care. I hope to have the confidence that you have in your body. I feel guilty not appreciating it because I know that my body can do amazing things, but I just can’t seem to get over it. Anyone have any thoughts?

Marina October 21, 2010 at 12:26 am

I love my body because it sticks by me even though I keep torturing it. I love it because although I have chronic bronchitis since I was 7, it allows me to run fast, without suffocating.

JenATX October 21, 2010 at 1:24 am

I love my body because it allows me to speak and express my feelings and it allows me to hear/read when others (like all those amazing women who have left comments above) express their feelings

Red Deception October 21, 2010 at 2:34 am

I didn’t realize! I am going to think about my answer and pose about it today. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Ned October 21, 2010 at 3:49 am

I love this post. Overall I do love my body and what it can do for me..but to be honest..right now I feel like it is letting me down. Reading this has been great. I’m sure I’ll be back to awesomeness in no time. Thanks!

Jamie October 21, 2010 at 5:21 am

I love my body because my trillions of cells are doing their job right now without my help at all…..pretty amazing.

Cindy Robinson October 21, 2010 at 7:31 am

Okay, I’m actually tearing up over here, tears of joy and appreciation. Great post girl, please keep up the good work :)

Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin October 21, 2010 at 7:48 am

Love this post! And I love that you listed things like your brain and your eyes. Our bodies are SO much more than just the outside. It’s amazing to think about all the stuff that goes on in the inside to make us function. Having a science background definitely gives me a whole new level of appreciation for my body! :D

Teresa October 21, 2010 at 7:50 am

I love my body because it grew my son. And after years of mistreating my body with unhealthy food it still forgave me and worked with me to lose 80 lbs.

Halat October 21, 2010 at 8:27 am

You should be proud of yourself, you and your perfect posts inspire me evereyday. thank you.
I consider my body as a cover for my soul, thats why I love it, the reason that I am living a wonderful life, the reason I am able to think, to taste, to write, to smile, to cry, to help, to dream, to enjoy and to love.
Happy National Love Your Body Day to all.

Judy October 21, 2010 at 8:29 am

First of all, we love your body too, because it gave us this awesome Blog!
I’d have to say that I love my body because in spite of some complications it gave me a healthy baby girl who just turned 19 last month. :)

Laura October 21, 2010 at 9:18 am

I love my body because it is such a great combination of all the people I love. Even though my Mom and Grandmother are gone, I see them every day. I have my grandmother’s hands, and see her now as I’m typing. Every time I do a downward-facing dog, I see my mother…I have her legs! And when I wash my face I see my Dad, the eyebrows!

Alaina October 21, 2010 at 11:45 am

1) I love my smile (looks like my mom’s)
2) I love my eyes. They are three different colors: blue, hazel and brown around the iris (and they look like my dad’s)
3) I love how strong my legs are. They used to be my least favorite part, but now I love them!
4) I love my toes :-)

Marathon Bound Gal aka Grace October 21, 2010 at 1:54 pm

I love my body for so many reasons.
1. Because I have been able to participate in so many causes that have helped others.
2. Because of what it has been able to do over the years, run, cycle, swim, rock climb, hike, kayak, marathon, half marathons, triathlons, etc. even after injuries and surgeries.
3. Because I am funny and crazy most times.
4. Because no matter how sick I get or how many surgeries I’ve had, I always bounce back feeling 150% better!
5. Because no matter how early it is the AM, I’m always an energizer bunny and cheery at that! At least that’s what my running buds tell me on Saturday’s long runs at 4am….teehee.
6. I love seeing my father in the mirror every morning because I look just like him. He’s been gone since I was 14.

LizLivingVegan October 21, 2010 at 3:54 pm

So inspiring!!! I felt better just reading it!!! I love my body because I STILL have my gymnast flexibility from college!

Natalie October 21, 2010 at 4:35 pm

I love my body because at any size it is athletic, flexible and just happy to be here.

OMG I’m a ninja too! Going on 4 years now! (I mean a self dubbed ninja, I have no formal training but I could karate chop a face off if I had to…I think.)

I love my body because it is reliable.

I love my body because it grows and changes with me and never give’s up no matter what I put it through. I also love the way my tattoo compliments the lines of my back.
