Another morning, another cuppa Japanese Sencha Green Tea!


Or should I say POT!

I finally got around to trying out my Purslane weeds that I picked up from the Oakville Organic Farmer’s Market on Saturday! The thought of eating weeds excites me. Remember how crazy I was about Dandelion last summer? Good times.


Fun Purslane Facts:

  • Purslane contains more Omega-3 fatty (alpha-linolenic acid) acids than any other leafy vegetable plant!
  • 100 grams of fresh purslane leaves (about 1 cup) contain 300 to 400 mg of alpha-linolenic acid
  • It can be used fresh in salads or smoothies, or it can be cooked like spinach, and used in stir-frys, soups, and stews.
  • It also contains vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B, as well as minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium.
  • Also present are two types of alkaloid pigments, which pack a large amount of antioxidants!
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine uses Purslane to treat infections and it can also be used topically for insect or snake bites on the skin.
  • It contains mucilage, which is a thick, gluey substance that aids in water storage and seed germination, and to act as a membrane thickener and food reserve. For a list of mucilaginous foods, see here. Guess what made the list- chia and flax seeds!!!




I tried a few leaves to see what it tasted like at the market and I was quite surprised at how light the flavour was. I was expecting it to be very bitter, but it wasn’t.

Of course I had to try it in a Green Monster!


Purslane Cherry Banana Green Monster


  • 2 cups Purslane
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 3/4 cup frozen pitted cherries
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 scoop Amazing Grass Chocolate Amazing Meal Powder




It tasted SO much better than I was expecting it to! I loved it.

The two things that stood about about Purslane:

1) The GM was very smooth, buttery, and silky– I think this was due to the Omega 3’s and possibly also the mucilaginous quality.

2) There was a slight hint of citrus flavour. Some people say that Purslane can be sour, but I found it was very light and citrusy.


I will be buying Purslane as long as it is in season! Can’t wait to get more this weekend. I also made this same GM yesterday for an afternoon pick-me-up and it gave me so much energy and kept me full for a long time.

Ooh, I’ve never tried Purslane before! I’m going to check it out the next time I go to the Farmer’s market! I love trying new greens in green monsters– you never know what you’ll discover! (such as the fact that I LOVE raw spinach in smoothies, but really don’t like it in salads)

Have you read the book “Green for Life?” I think she mentions the benefits of eating weeds, and has a list of which ones are good!

Wow, purslane! I’ve never heard of it, but it definitely looks and sounds amazing! I’ve also never heard of plants containing omega-3s before either (I always associate it with salmon) but purslane sounds really interesting! :D

Purselane is good.. but my favorite is lambsquarter! Have you had that yet? I work at a farmers market for an organic farm and I could eat a hole punch of lambsquarter leaves mindlessly. Sooo good. Just remember to make sure any edible weed you eat is organic! It could be poisonous if treated with harmful chemicals and pesticides (i/e: edible weeds growing on sidewalks)

Purslane, is also called “mouse ear” in Chinese cause of their shape. they literally grow like weed, my mom tosses a bunch of seeds in our back yard and 2 weeks later you have mountain’s of them growing. Thanks for the nutrition info, I never know that I was eating such a healthy veggie all these years.

I always really enjoy your health links – thanks for posting!

I found the one about the plastics + obesity particularly interesting. However, one thing he doesn’t mention is the cause/correlation problem – ie. it’s not higher phthalate levels that CAUSE obesity, but rather, those people who consume more soft drinks and other packaged and processed foods (leading to higher phthalate levels in the body) are more likely to be obese. Does that make sense?

Just a thought (before we all get paranoid!) :)

I’ve never even heard of purslane before but it sounds like a superfood! I’ll have to keep my eye out for it at the farmer’s market. I swear I wouldn’t know any types of greens other than spinach if it weren’t for your blog! :P

I remember reading about purslane in one of my favorite cookbooks, “A Year in a Vegetarian Kitchen”, and I’ve been curious about it ever since! Thanks for posting a picture. Turns out I was imagining the right weed. :) I’ll have to look up to see what the exact recipe was, but I want to say it was a salad or light stir-fry.

The Australian government’s body image initiative is promoted by Kate Ellis (federal government minister for youth and sport) – bit of a sassy chick, and includes a variety of different representatives, including a former model and a former women’s magazine editor. It gets some flack for various reasons, but at least something is being done to address the disparities between what’s real and needed and what’s unrealistic and harmful. Thanks for including it in your health watch!

Oh my god! I can’t believe people are selling this (and paying for it!) at Farmer’s markets! I pull this stuff out like crazy (and occasionally add it to salads), it grows insanely fast and makes my garden, yard and brick paths look very unkempt! I guess if you don’t have your own driveway to pluck it from, you’ve got to get it somewhere. :)

Some very interesting topics in health news roundup. I love when you add these to posts.

I think being on the Biggest Loser would give ANYONE an eating disorder. I heard that they consider bananas and pineapples “weight gain” foods…umm, why are fresh fruits being labelled so unjustly. They might be dense, but that is just sad. I am a type A and a go-getter, so I think being on TBL would be dangerous because I would be determined to be the best dieter and be obsessed with losing. I’m not so sure there are former TBL contestants who didn’t develop problems like this that stayed under wraps.

Funny, before you described the taste, I figured they’d be very bitter. I’m really interested in purslane now that you mention they’re quite light. Sometimes that’s just what I want for summer.

Haha I do a LOT of pulling up purselane at my farm! It’s such a pest, I never knew that people actually sold it. I guess we should start bagging it and selling it at the farmstand! I like the idea of putting it in GMs. I put a new green in my GM the other day- an Asian green called Tot Soi- kind of like and Asian spinach, so it subbed in quite nicely for the regular spinach. I just pulled off the stems because they can be kind of woody.

Dear Angela,
I am looking to do a cleanse and feel like a short cleanse (3-5 day) before I start back to work will help me get 2013 off to a healthy start. Do you have a set of recipes you recommend to get started. I have been looking a fresh juice cleanses along with lighter soups etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
